This week the Trifecta is brought to you by the great number
3. It is such a beautiful number, used
in so many ways. From being the number
of competitors to stand on the podium after a race, to the number of sides on
nature’s strongest shape (the triangle) the number three has an important
designation in human civilization. It
provides an endless source of wonder and intrigue. Think of the great movie trilogies you have
seen, or your first mode of transportation (the tricycle), and I’m sure you’ll
agree 3 is a terrific whole number. It
even has significance to the number of my favorite driver. Jeff Gordon’s famed 24 frames the 3, maybe
showing reverence to a driver who drove a car with that number…....what was his
name again?
Anyway your card this weekend starts with the Busch series
out in California starting at
9:30p.m ET Saturday. All drivers are
eligible.
The second race this week is the Nextel cup race, in California
as well starting at 7:00 pm ET Sunday
night (thankfully Monday is a holiday).
The last race is the NHRA’s US Nationals taking place in Indianapolis
over the weekend. This week we will
focus only on the FUNNY cars. The finals
are scheduled to run Monday at 12:00 am ET.
(Indy is only 1 hour behind Eastern Standard Time right Dave?).
Final qualifications for the drag races take place on
Saturday afternoon so picks are due before the Busch race 9:30 ET Saturday
evening. Same rules apply, but if
someone picks the cup winner this week I will be taking away the bonus 5 points
as we will have figured out how to pick’em.
Also congratulations to photogr who won last weeks Trifecta
with a -3 and thanks for the mention on the radio program last week The Trifecta before that was won by yours truly
(williamwilman) after an exciting trip to Montreal
and the one before that was handed to volfan69 who won with a -1. Both photo and volfan are the only people to pick the eventual
cup winner.
okay, i'm a big dummy. i forgot to mention the Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. that would the big three. many thanks to my darling wife for mentioning that. any other 3's you would like to add? any favorite trilogies? how about the Matrix, or Lord of the Rings.

Johnson's racing in the Busch series this weekend so I hope you haven't picked him in the wrong race....opinion noted for the funny cars.
I checked the NHRA website and it said there are 2 FC categories (should be '3' this weekend, send a letter to them about that, Will) but the ones that jon and you had picked were both in the fuel one and not the alcohol one....so I just did what you did and plucked out a name, lol
TEZ TEZ TEZ: there is only one Top Fuel funny car class. The other one is Alcohol funny car commonly mistaken for the Funny car Top Fuel. Same car and chassis with the same engine except one runs corn squeezings.
Now there are 3 classes of funny cars technically speaking. The third class is the Pro Modified class. The cars are usually a funny shape and not like what you would find on the car lots.
These puppys are powered by Mountain Motors with unlimited displacement ( 650 Cu in) and comes in a variety of fuel choices topped off with Nitros Oxide and Huffers as a booster. Usually quite a bit faster than the Pro stocks but not as fast as the TOP fuel funny cars and not as funny looking.
Actually I find these cars to be more appealing and more exciting to watch. A carry over class from the ( IHRA)Top Sportsman class I used to run. NHRA calls then the Pro Modifieds. Speeds are in the 230 MPH range with 6.0 plus second runs at 9500 RPM.
This class is constantly overlooked in favor of the top fuel racers and it is a sad shame. Certainly a better show in my opinion

The 3s, FREE Willey,, the 3 & 03 COT willeys of G.G.W Racing. All 3 are big and mean when confronted by NASCAR officials. I can only take Dale Jr- cup cause of being away for awhile. Ill take my - points. The winner is who's got the most point anyway right? LMAO......

first off dave if your EST then the final rounds begin at 11:00am in indy. i just wanted to mention that incase anyone was going to be watching on monday.
ya jjd i love the first 2 bourne films but will probably fill in a few hours in the off season to watch the third when it comes out on dvd. not much into the fights though.
and how about my irish this afternoon. losers to gt 33-3. seems fitting.
forensic2 you still have a few mins left to make a busch and nhra choice.
my picks are
busch----kenseth
cup------vickers
nhra----kenny bernstein
Kesolowski is out in a big way. The #1 car bumped Almindinger and hit the 88 of kesolowski which went for a wild bump and ride on the guard rail. Looks ok but may have some leg damage.
The SAFER Barrier probably saved a life tonite. Kesolowski likely wouldn't have survived the crash had it been directly into a concrete wall.
One more open-wheel racing innovation (NASCAR, to their credit, got in on the act - sponsoring further development of the system after Dale Earnhardt's fatal crash in 2001).
That is definitely true. And With all the safety features now on board, Kesolowski was quite a lucky guy. What a freak accident..
Don't think if they were using the COT the accident may not have been as severe. Seems the Cars of yesterday are a but more prone to getting loose in traffic.

any idea why Rusty said Brad was able to "walk away from the incident"? I never knew being on a stretcher counted as walking these days *scratches head in confusion*
Crusty is not at the same race. He is out there in Fantasy land. Heard that same statement and was scratching my head too. Don't really get him at all.. Where is his head at?

Photo, I know you got to pick 3. It was late last night and I figure the busch race was under way or even over, Same with NHRA, too tired to look up and see.
i guess i missed something eh. what happened to vickers? he was doing great. and kenseth, that has to be his worst finish there. and carl edwards must have surrendered his lead on the owners points. what happened to him?
here are your standings
volfan69--------1(i bet you'd rather seen the vols win though eh)
photogr---------2
Tezgm99---------3
jon_464---------6
JayJayDean------7
IowaGirl--------26
williamwilman---28
Dave_in_Indy----31

William, yes! jon is a great sport and he isn't rubbing it in on me. He can have my 1 and I will take his 6 because he has earned it! :-)
Who is that tom person and why does he do that? We all get along so well on this NASCAR site. We don't need that. I told 14Falcons, that I hesitate to comment on his football blogs because of people like that. We all have our favorites and we can say why, but we don't have to be ugly and argue. I appreciate all of you. 32 years teaching middle schoolers not to say ugly things prevents me from doing it. I hope that helps you all understand me. Lots of love to all.

Damned ABC cuts away from the Detroit IndyCar race before they can interview Franchitti or Dixon (or Rice) about the ONLY interesting part of a horribly boring race.
Those of us who sat around and watched that abysmal bore DESERVED the satisfaction of hearing more than just the typical Michael Andretti take on the incident (as fun as his interview was, particularly the time when they cut the video feed to Michael, but took about 15 seconds to get the interview going - his facial expressions and mouthed obscenities were priceless).
A VERY interesting racing tactic - Dixon ensuring he took out his competitor as he spun out. Had he NOT done so, the competitor (Franchitti) would have taken a significant lead in championship points over Dixon going into the season ending race. But we didn't get to hear their reactions ...
Dave: missed that race.. Was watching the qualifying for the NHRA races..
Interesting to note John Force in funny cars failed to qualify and Warren Johnson failed to qualify in Pro stock. 2 top prior multi championship winners.
So Dixon Won by spinning out Franchetti??? Bet that would have been an interesting post race interview and altercation.
UpDated correction:
Kanaan won Danica 2nd Wheldon 3rd Franchetti 6th Dixon 8th or 9th. I think that was the way it panned out..

come on, Dave....got a video link for me? All I've seen is the updates which said "yellow out for contact between #9, #15 and #27". Rice was in front of both at the time and my first thought was that Dario was ticked off at being behind Scott (for the first time in the race) so he punted him into Rice on the final lap.
I'm going to need to see a replay on the news tonight by the sounds of it.
However, if Dixon did that on purpose, then he needs to be sat out for the next race; simple as that.

ta, will check it out after work since the work PC doesn't like playing videos and won't let me d/l the required software....stupid not an IT person *grumble*
photo; it is with deep condolances that I must ask for your resignation from 'The Stoppers'. You have brought our club into disrepute these past couple of weeks and your form is in the mail and must be delivered prior to Richmond
can't have someone who wins all the time in it after all :P
congrats by the way....can't believe it took Jimmie this long to throw off our jinx, lol

Well I picked the stopper in the Funny car field.. Arend was the fastest car during qualfying then goes out the first round of eliminations with his brakes on apparently.Ran slower in eliminations. Figures..
TEZ:
Don't think Johnson will win the championship or Kurt Busch.. More like Stewart, Hamlin or Burton but it will be close.
As good sport, I will take -2 points off my score and let you have +2 points as the bonus score. That should give you 35 points and me 7 points.

Congratulatio ns to Dave_in_Indy winning the Great Canadian Trifecta on June 10 2007. His blog "A Partially Able Mind" is a collage of sports info and a must for anyone interested in the Indianapolis 500 or the IRL. Congratulatio ns to JayJayDean, winner of the 2007 MonsterMile Trifecta on June 05, 2007. He has a great blog analyzing NASCAR's points system called JJD's NASCAR and other stuff blog. Congrats need to go out to 14Falcons, the 2007 winner of the Memorial Day weekend Trifecta. Every race fan needs to check out his blog, Kierkegaard's Stages.
