Doesn’t it seem when you’re on holidays that your schedule
gets turned upside down. Sorry for being
a day behind and I hope it doesn’t effect the turn out. Enough with the excuses though and on to the
other FOX NASCAR bloggers contest. We’ll
leave it up for debate which one is more fun.
This week will start out with the Nextel Cup race, the Pepsi
(formerly Firecracker) 400 from Daytona on Saturday 7:30 ET.
Being dubbed the last restrictor plate race with the old car, it will
take place Saturday night.
Next the F1 race at Silverstone on Sunday morning (8:00am ET). Hamilton
returns home to show his country how to get it done. Will he cave under the pressure or rise to
the occasion. You decide.
And lastly we will have the IRL race from Watkins Glen 3:30 ET Sunday afternoon. Finally they go to a track where throttle
control is important and then the Nascar guys will be holding it wide
open. Ahh, the irony of it all.
I also wanted to know how many of you are interest in champ
car racing? It seems to me to be the
bottom of the heap, because of instability and predictability. They are racing through the exhibition
grounds here in Toronto this weekend and I think the only ones who are still interested are
local media. No points for this one but
you can tell me who you think will win.
I’ll do a wrap up next week from the past 2 weeks(when I
have time back at work). I just wanted
to get this out before it was too late.
Picks are due…. lets see… we’ll change it up and say before the start of
the Saturday night race (7:30 ET)(yes that is after F1 qualifying.)
ya paul is back. i think he has already won one dave. and thats what i mean about champ car being predictable. after those 2 im not sure of a name i could pick. but who doesn't want to see d'matta make a full recovery.
I'm not a big Champ Car guy. I like my open-wheel racers to have to tackle ovals and road courses (F1 excepted, of course), and I think Champ Car is not as high-quality as the IRL in terms of drivers. I think if they merged into a 22-car single series at least 14 or 15 drivers would be IRL-based.
Cup - Kevin Harvick
F1 - Lewis Hamilton (I'll take the penalty points)
IRL - Helio Castroneves
CCWS - Robert Doornbos (on that, we don't get any coverage at all for these guys....that really p***es me off since this was the series that got me interested in oval racing in the first place! RIP Greg, you would have been a multiple Champion, mate)
Why? If Lewis wins the worst I get is 6 points....a far cry from my recent F1 performances, lol
And if he finishes last....well, then I keep my status as leader of the 'Stoppers' :P
I have a soft spot for Helio; he was the guy Roger chose to replace Greg at Penske after that horrendous shunt in Fontana (last race of the '99 season)
what odds that Seb will replace Scott at STR for the 2008 F1 season?
I know he's done a couple tests with them....and Adrian Newey knows how to design fast cars. I don't think there will be a Yank on the grid come Melbourne.
Right, I hate this; NASCAR, grow a brain and spend some of that crapload of money you have to make a bloody track with a roof over it so we can see some #### racing regardless of the weather!
It works for tennis (Melbourne), it works for football (also Melbourne)....take the lead for once and DO something about it.
Is that really the outlook? Man....so when was the last time a race got cancelled (not just raced the next day, but scrapped completely) for #### weather?
jjd they should crush daytona and talledega. i can't stand "hold it wide open" racing. i say that knowing full well that my beloved winged sprint cars do exactly that, but i think that is why i'm not an avid IRL fan. why do i like sprint cars and not plate racing?
and check out hotfootlori's blog for more of my thoughts on the weather.

Here is a crazy idea.. Rain tires on a super speed way. That should be a crash fest.
Tez: I don't know nothing about weather. Nothing..
William:I guess they are called outlaws here.. Sprint cars have not changed their shape or power train in over 30 years. Could the fans relate to that more..UUMMM.
My idea of rain tires makes better sense than putting a roof over a 2.5 mile track. No let me rephrase that> both are in the lunacy range. Rain tires on a road course is better. Untill technology catches up rain tires will only be good on road courses.
Ok I have run "I don't know nothing" for too long. Would you prefer I say "I am a know it all?"
I wouldn't say it's "not real racing", it's just different. I think NASCAR ought to at least consider having the engines be smaller on a superspeedway, so the cars don't need restirctor plates.
I like the fact that the IRL is ovals and Champ Car is road courses. I am beginning to think they need to stay apart.
IRL is running some road courses. I do not think that is too smart. But I wouldn't want to ignore the Buffalo market either. Champ Car is going over seas later this summer. Not too smart in my opinion.
I'd prefer they merge just because the driver depth would be a LOT better and the Indy 500 would benefit.
I don't think anyone is going to ACTUALLY confuse a "sprint car" and a "Sprint Car", because, no one really cares too much about sprint cars. (Speaking only of casual fans, of course.)
the thing about sprint cars is i have brought a few folks to the races who have never seen them go. every time people come away thinking man those things are WILD. yet it continues to be an attendance driven series with very little t.v. coverage. IMHO it is the premier type of racing in this (well your) country.
William: We have a sprint car series track here in Cincy.Would you believe a 1/8th mile track. Yes the races are action packed but very little attendance unless the World of Out Law boys show up every once in a blue moon. I would imagine the poor condition of the track has some thing to do with attendance.. Owners are milking the track dry.
If they would put some money back into it and make it at least a 1/4 mile track attendance might pick up.
The 'Sprint Cup'? I'm sorry, did I totally miss something due to the time difference? It sounds like they nicked my idea of a qualifying title if you ask me.
Falcons; well, we're both CE's so I'll help in the design of it....just to prove to NASCAR that it can be done, lol
"But no, let's race in packs because newbies like it and it looks good on TV. Let's just kill people. It ain't no big deal.
COT and safety, it's a joke as long as Daytona and Talladega are on the schedule. It is just more pc ####."
Hold on a second, Mr. Drama.
Last NASCAR racing fatality at Daytona: Dale Earnhardt Sr., 2001
Before that: Neil Bonnett and Rodney Orr, 1994 (both on Hoosier tires)
Before THAT: Bruce Jacobi, 1983
They aren't exactly dropping like flies at Daytona. How about Talladega?
Last NASCAR racing fatality at Talladega: Tiny Lund, 1975 (!)
Most of the more recent fatalities have been at Loudon, Texas, and Charlotte.
You are a math man. How about computing some rates on those fatalities such as deaths per million miles raced? Then see what you get. To keep it simpler, use Cup fatalities only to begin with and keep it to the last 17 years.
a lot of yellows though. and i think wally said it best "the 26 just got a surge right at the end". to win a race because you got a surge? this is plate racing. no i didn't really want to see the 5 car win but to win because the accordian effect coming out of turn 4. its just not a judge of who was a better driver or who had a better car set up for a long or short run. he won because he got a surge at the right time. i don't see the difference in having the race decided by dice or a rollet wheel. that being said at least daytona does require a decent handling car.
