Now do we need a playoff?
Nov 09, 2008 | 10:27AM | report this

Well, well, well. What do we have here? The BCS is in a mess for another year, I think so. The top two teams of the BCS Standings - Alabama and Texas Tech - did their job and defeated their opponents, but Penn State #### everything out by losing to Iowa. Now, we have a dielemma here. Here's my projected top ten BCS Standings:

1. Alabama

2. Texas Tech

3. Texas

4. Florida

5. Oklahoma

6. USC

7. Utah

8. Penn State

9. Boise State

10. Ohio State

See a problem in that? The top 5 are all from the SEC and Big 12, with Texas Tech and Alabama leading their conferences, even though they would both have to win their championship games to be declared "champion".

You might be saying, "So what. Texas Tech and Alabama are the top two teams in the nation. It's only inevitable that they will meet in the National Championship game come January."

Not so fast my friend.

In my opinion, the top 4 teams in the nation aren't in either the number 1 or 2 spot. Not at all. My top four, in no particular order, are: Florida, Texas, USC, and Oklahoma, ironically the next four on my projections.

You may be wondering where I'm going at here, but let me continue. Say Alabama and Texas Tech go undefeated, many people would feel safe to say they're the top two teams in Division One (or Bowl Subdivision or whatever they're called nowadays).

Not me.

And yes, this argument has come almost every year (except for probably 2005 when USC and Texas were clearly one step above everyone else, but that's for another day). This year though, there may actually be some stats to back up a need for a playoff. Want some, fine. Remember, though, that this is only hypothetically speaking.

Say Alabama wins out and faces Florida in the SEC Title Game. Say Florida defeats Alabama by a narrow margin- 7 points or less. Florida thinks they'll have a free ride to the title game, although Alabama might counteract with they could beat Ole Miss, unlike Florida. Then, you have chaos in the SEC.

That, though, is small chaos compared to the Big 12 South. If Oklahoma were to beat Texas Tech on Saturday, we would have a three-way tie for the Big 12 South division lead. Since Texas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma have already faced each other, and all have the same record in the conference, the team with the highest BCS Ranking would go to the Big 12 Title game, against Mizzou.

Wait, what?

I would expect OU to jump UT if OU were to defeat TTU, but wouldn't that be a little unjust? Considering Texas defeated Oklahoma by a conforting margin, shouldn't they be ahead? But since OU could defeat Texas Tech, a team Texas couldn't defeat, OU has that right to go to the final. But what about Texas Tech? They defeated Texas, a team OU couldn't defeat, although they lost to OU, a team Texas beat.

Confused yet?

Let me break it down like this, if TTU or Alabama are to fall in the next two weeks or in their conferences title game (which I expect both of them to go down at least once) we have one hell of a problem.

Hello playoffs.

Yes, its said every damn year, and every time the same thing comes up- there are two teams that are a notch above the rest- but this year it's very different. Listen to me here as I try to break down this playoff for you.

We'll take 8 teams, the six BCS Champions and two at-larges, while it may not be the most favored by the fans, it would be better then what we have now. Here's my projected winners of each conference, and the mid-majors:

ACC: North Carolina
Big East: West Virginia
Big Ten: Penn State
Big 12: Texas
Pac-10: USC
SEC: Florida

At-Larges: Oklahoma & Alabama.

Then, the playoffs would look like this:

1. Texas (Big 12 Champion) vs. 8. North Carolina (ACC Champion)
4. Penn State (Big Ten Champion) vs. 5. Alabama (At-Large)

3. USC (Pac-10 Champion) vs. 6. Oklahoma (At-Large)
2. Florida (SEC Champion) vs. 7. West Virginia (Big East Champion)

Like I said, while a lot of people are happy, there are still some losers, mainly: Texas Tech, Utah, Boise State, and Ohio State, to an extent. But for the most part, it solves a lot of problems.

However, this isn't fantasy world.

Don't you guys love the BCS?

Time for a second go; Tigers win 3-1.
Apr 11, 2007 | 2:32PM | report this

Nate robertson pitched 7.1 great innings to help the tigers beat the orioles yesterday 3-1. an error in the sixth inning cost the orioles. with the bases loaded 1 out and magglio ordonez hit a groundball to ss and it was a set-up double play but 2b roberts threw a poor ball which got past the 1b huff and 2 runs came around. in the next inning, polanco hit a sf to bring granderson home from 3rd base. on the other side robertson pitched pretty well, getting 3 dps and only allowed 4 hits while striking out 5. fielding was pretty good and the tigers will try to take 2 of 3 from the orioles with verlander on the mound there is a pretty good chance.

notes- Robertson improves to 2-0 on the season... jones has picked up a save in every of the 4 tiger wins.

detroitsports vs. markhein123. 1st fight.
Feb 03, 2007 | 2:31PM | report this

me: Welcome all of you to the first annual BBT (Bloggers Boxing Tournament) featuring the Dime bloggers vs. the Cussing Bloggers. I am here with my two co-hosts, Chuck Norris and Ben Stiller.

chuck: Great to be here williams, I'm so excited to be here watching these guys box.

ben: Oh why don't you just shut the #### up chuck, I don't even know why they told you to be a judge. You blow it, like I did with your mom last night. OW.

chuck: Now is that really called for.

me: Break it up you two. Now we are ready for our first match, and it's the cussing members detroitsports vs. dimes markhein123 what's your take on this matchup chuck?

chuck: It should be a close one, but mark needs to get an avatar, cause that is booooooorrrrrrrrrrrinnnnnnnnng.

me: Your thoughts ben.

ben: Well both of these fighters are inside-fighters, so that really gives neither of these guys an advantage.

me: And there's the bell, and both are staying away from each other. I think mark smelled a #### from detroit, what's your breakdown of that ben?

ben: Ooo, I smell it too, I think that's toxic gas, I'm getting woosy. Flop. ben is now passed out.

me: MEDIC!!

chuck: mark seems to be taking some damage from this #### and he's slowly falling down.

me: And detroit is now started, an uppercut, and another, another, another. I don't know if mark can take anymore, detroit gives mark a jab, another uppercut, a hook. OO boy it looks like mark is down and out. Yes we have a TKO in our first fight to give the cussing bloggers the 1 to 0 edge.

chuck: Wow, detroit just farts, makes mark unconscious, and then hits him multiple times. Great fight by detroit.

me: ben is still passed out, but the medics haven't seemed to care, cause no one is here yet.

chuck: How about we go to our next matchup shall we?

Thoughts on Smith, Dungy make history
Jan 25, 2007 | 6:42AM | report this

A response to Smith, Dungy make history: Do you think I cared if their skin was black or white? That is stupid. Sure its a milestone, but not to write something about it. Shouldn't we be focusing more on the game than this little side-note. I betcha any money that Lovie and Tony don't  care about their color of their skin, just that their team made it to the Super Bowl.

Thoughts on Hot-shooting Hibbert lifts Georgetown
Jan 07, 2007 | 11:05AM | report this
A response to Hot-shooting Hibbert lifts Georgetown: One more overratted Notre Dame team to bag on. I don't know which team is more overratted though- the Football or Basketball team. I'll say football because you have overlooked Brady Quinn, overratted schedule: Army, Navy, Air Force, Stanford, please. Also, an overweight coach (That's you Charlie) and they are always projected to go to a BCS Bowl, where they get crushed.

Thoughts on Johnson's extension still not done
Jan 07, 2007 | 10:22AM | report this
A response to Johnson's extension still not done: Baby they're CRAZY...Baby they're CRAZY.. Baby they're CRAZY..... about him. What in then name of Sam's Hell are they thinking? The guy is already 43. Hasn't been good since he last was at Arizona, but you still are taking a shot at him. Whatever they are smoking they have to pass it over here because that would go down as one of the worst deals in MLB history. They also gave away 4 prospects for him. Did I mention he was 43 years old?

Thoughts on McGrady, Rockets win fifth straight
Jan 06, 2007 | 5:42PM | report this
A response to McGrady, Rockets win fifth straight: Yeah, can I get a HOLLA. I heard the Jazz were one of the best teams of the league. So why did T-mac light them up like a Christmas tree? You so called anaylists shouldn't be surprised when the Rockets make the playoffs, here's why. Last year, Yao and McGrady were injured for most of the year, what does that equal? A disappointing team. Now with these two healthy they should be able to make a serious playoff push.

Thoughts on Schiano says he's happy at Rutgers
Nov 26, 2006 | 11:30AM | report this
A response to Schiano says he's happy at Rutgers: I hope he stays at Rutgers. He has turned this school from an 0-12 suck badly team to a possible BCS Game. He has put life into that school and needs to stay there. And why would you want to go to Miami anyways. I know you used to work there, but with all of the controversey the past few years I would hold up on your "Dream Job." Speaking of Rutgers, they won yesterday... Yahoo! Even better news.. WV lost, so that means they only need 1 more win to lock up the Big East and their spot in the Sugar Bowl. My predicted BCS bowls, Rose Bowl- UM vs. LSU(at large); Orange Bowl- WF vs. OK ; Sugar Bowl- Rut vs. Fla; Fiesta Bowl- BSU vs. ND (at large); BCS National Championship Game- OSU vs. USC.

Thoughts on No. 2 UNC wins NIT third-place game
Nov 24, 2006 | 6:07PM | report this

A response to No. 2 UNC wins NIT third-place game: Ya know what's sad, this game will probably be a better game then the final, Butler vs. Gonzaga. Tyler Hanbrough, can't say enough about him, really bounced back after a terrible game on Wed. vs Gonzaga. 9 points? That would put a dart in their team.

For example: Today he had I think 26 points (check yourself) that opened up lanes for their other forwards. The whole team relies on Tyler sorta. Tyler is a terrific athelete, but give him the ball early and UNC should win 95% of the time.

Go Butler, show everyone that you are the boss!

Thoughts on Romo ties team record in rout
Nov 24, 2006 | 2:15PM | report this

A response to Romo ties team record in rout: Tony, way to not give up. If you read this article it said he played in Division II Eastern Illinois (alma matter of Saints coach Sean Payton, and Broncos coach Mike Shanahan). Waited for 4+ years to get his chance. And he is using it to his advantage.

Bill Parcells has finally given the team some credit. He said,"I think we're going to be in it here for a little while." Which really says something... he finally knows he can trust Tony. The past few years, you didn't know what Bledsoe was going to give to you week in and week out. Tony has shown that he is consistent. And look at the opponents: @Car, @Was, @Arz, Ind, TB. So if anything they can beat the teams that they are supposed to eat (Washington doesn't count) and can pull an upset or two.

Thoughts on Angels sign Gary Matthews Jr. for $50 million
Nov 24, 2006 | 1:54PM | report this

A response to Angels sign Gary Matthews Jr. for $50 million: Doesn't everyone else think that almost 75% of that money came from that one phenominal catch he made on Houston. He may be off his best year--but still, if you are going to spend money like that at least go for someone a little younger. Maybe Juan Pierre. It may be a steal come Spring Training, but right now that has to be a silly deal by the Angels.

Thoughts on: Texas A&M Finally Beats Texas
Nov 24, 2006 | 1:44PM | report this

A response to Texas A&M Finally Beats Texas: I am happy for Dennis Francione because he is finally off the hot seat. But you have to remember that he is 1-11 vs. Texas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. He did pick up a huge win though and will have to soak in it. That 280 pound RB is a monster, he is the College Football version of Jerome Bettis. He has quick feet but can plow you over like a snowplow.

Colt McCoy got beat up all game. 3 INT's isn't a McCoy type of game. What got me fed up is that late hit after Texas A&M's last INT on Colt. #91 took a cheap shot on him and deserved to be ejected. He acted like Albert Haynesworth did when he stepped on that guys face. Very un-sportsmanlike and he should be suspended.

Thoughts on Coker fired as Hurricanes' head coach
Nov 24, 2006 | 1:33PM | report this

A response to Coker fired as Hurricanes' head coach: Is this a surprise to anyone? He was 6-6 at the U. Not good enough for that school. He was going to be gone anyways because of the Miami-FIU brawl, and possibly that stomping on Loisville's Logo inncedent. Even though he was terrific his first few years, you have to be consistent. He had a nice run though. There is something I have to say though...

MSU will take him. They are looking for someone who will give them bowl eligibility if nothing else. He may not be the best choice, but take someone to get it out of the way.
