Worst Sportcasters
Mar 26, 2008 | 5:48AM | report this

Where have all the great sportcasters gone?  Men like Keith Jackson and Howard Cosell.  Sportcasters that could call any game in any sport and would keep you on the edge of your seat.  These days it seems we have sportcasters that don't know the difference between the Wishbone and a hole in the ground.  Analysts that give you insight like "if they would score more points they would win more games".

So here is the question - Who are the worst most idiotic, hated or anoying sportcasters in all of sports?  I have two that top my list.  First is Lee Corso.  There is a joke in Alabama about the only thing Bama fans and Auburn Fans can agree on is they both hate Lee Corso.  Why do people listen to this guy.  He NEVER had a winning record as a head coach but it seems that people hang on his every word like he is a college football guru.  All he can tell you is how to lose.  It would be like me getting tips on being a championship boxer from Butterbean.  The second is #### Vital.  I won't argue that Dicky V knows his stuff, but if I had to listen to him using the term "baby" on a regular basis I would go postal.  I want emotion and an upbeat personality not someone who acts like a kid with ADD on a sugar high.  So let me hear it - Who are some other sportcasters that need to go away for one reason or another or if nothing else just shut up?

Who was the sick #### who decided The NFL's two most medicre QB's of all time would be a good team? Troy Aikmen, and Joe Buck, should just go run their respective post NFL career businesses and stop punishing us. The quote from the end of your 1st paragragh is a Joe Buck isn't it?

I absolutely cannot stand the Joe Buck/Troy Aikman tag team.

Bryant Gumble is in a league all his own when it comes to aggravation and ignorance spewing from the television speaker. Tony Kornhieser is a very close second. Sympathy vote goes to Emmitt "Hooked on Phonics" Smith. Lovable guy but embarrasses himself every time he attempts to form sentences.

Oh, I forgot to mention "the crackhead"... WHat's his name? He used to be a great receiver for Dallas back in the day, but now the meth has him acting like pimp on sunday afternoon... Micheal Irving... That's it. That's my #2 pick.

swack - the quote is actually one of the many variations of the "expert" analysis of John Madden. Joe Buck may use it too, but I don't know.

midnite - I agree with you on both Gumble and Kornhieser. Let's pray they never team up.

Keith Jackson? Yes I'll agree with you on that one, he is the best.....but.....Howard Cosell??? If anyone could fill 30 minutes of "dead" air time (tv or radio) and not say anything Howard Cosell was the best.....but.....comparing Keith Jackson to Howard Cosell is an insult to Keith Jackson

hold on a minute there jkl, I was not comparing Keith Jackson TO Howard Cosell. Each of them had there own style and approach to sportscasting and that's what made them great. Like it or not they had a personality and a flair coupled with a knowledge of whatever event they were broadcasting. So I agree you cannot compare the two to each other. But compare them to people like Lee Corso and hopefully you see the point I was making.

I'll toss in Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless. Smith is in "yell mode" every time he speaks, and he seems to coverse with his colleges like he's at the bar after a few rounds. Bayless says things like "The Cavaliers' supporting cast is carrying LeBron" (with a straight face) because he knows it will draw attention. I did a list recently on this topic. Here's how it went:

10. Magic Johnson
9. Tony Kornheiser
8. Dan Dierdorf
7. John Madden
6. Kenny Mayne
5. Bill Walton
4. Cris Collinsworth
3. Chris Berman
2. Bayless
1. Smith

Gus "The Shriek" Johnson - "HOW ABOUT THAT PLAY!!!!!!!"

Kevin "Understatement" Harlan - "Lebron makes an amazing move!"

Without a doubt in my mind, the top two go to Kornheiser, who seems to have so little knowledge of football that he resorts to played pop culture references that end up coming off like they were said by the perv uncle that isn't allowed to visit anymore.
Followed close by the sideline reporting of Boomer. I swear, it's like a 3-year-old who knows a lot about football, but has been drinking.

I feel somewhat sorry for Aikman having to be punished with that pinhead. Oh well, you'll be surprised how many people like to watch sports so they can also make fun of the analysts.

And if you think about it Frank Calendo wouldn't be as funny if he wasn't impersonating Terry Bradshaw and John Madden.

I cannot believe what I constantly here from the fox soccer report commentators. They must be relared to the management of fox because they are hopeless. Watching highlights of games and they are commenting on things that are not even happening. portugal v greece two incredible free kick goals that would have beet anyone in the world and there comment is portugal needs to practice set pieces. Lets give credit where credit is do. Two unsavable freekicks, maybe they should practice commentating. Unfortunately their live game commentators are even worse. What is an american fan to do? Learn spanish and watch gol tv?

Best of all time? Keith Jackson. He can report a ping-pong game and put you on the edge of your seat. Trickling down you have Pat Summerall, Howard Cosell, Al Michaels, Brent (yes, don't shoot me...)Musberger, Chris Schenkel, Harry Carrey, Lindsey Nelson, Heywood Hale Broun, #### Enberg and Verne Lundquist. WOW! 200 years of memories there.
Worst? Pam Ward from FOX. When we (my buddies) tune in and see she is broadcasting a game we want to watch, we either turn the local radio on to 'hear' it and 'watch it (without her inane and hapless inaccurate comments); or the channel to watch another game altogether. Second worst? Jim Gray of NBC. Why does NBC keep him on the payroll? He should be selling shoes in a strip mall for minimum wage, not interviewing Pete Rose. Anyone reading this can do better than him. Thanks

kellyscott - the line about "I'd like to see you try...." has been used over and over again by anyone that disagrees with a critique. This is opinion and I have never heard anyone say or write that broadcasting is easy. But the topic is asking who the worst broadcasters are, period. I'm not a professional or amateur broadcaster, so I don't pretend to know how to do it well. But the consensus here is these people WHO ARE PAID to broadcast DON'T DO IT WELL. Same issue as if we were giving opinions about who the worst QBs, Pitchers, shooting guards, NASCAR drivers or even who the worst President of the US is. The "I'd like to see you do better.." line is stale and irrelevant to these discussions. Point out why you think someone is not as bad as critiqued.

Don't know what her name is, but I just finished watching her (painfully) on fox sports (Saturday at 7 p.m.). How the heck does someone as brutally ugly as her get on tv? Does she have a relative in the biz or what? She looks like a hideous woman who had plastic surgery that failed worse. I doubt I'll ever be able to watch fox sports for more than 20 seconds each and every time she's on (and I tend to spend alot of money on products that are advertised during sports shows) but I guess Fox's competitors' advertisers will be getting my money now, and isn't that what drives network television? As my girlfriend just said, "That #### is eat up"

I am just your average sports fan who believes the following: 1 - Div. 1 college football needs a playoff. 2 - The SEC is the toughest conference. 3 - Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, and USC are the most over-rated teams in college football. 4 - An attractive woman who knows sports is every man's fantasy. 5 - The MLB season is too long. 6 - The DH in baseball needs to be done away with. 7 - The government needs to stay out of sports because they mess up everything they get involved in.
