I'm bored at work and I left my flash drive at home so I figured I'll do the other 2 AFC Division champions. First with the reigning Super Bowl Champions...The Indianapolis Colts
2006 Record: 12-4 1st AFC South Defeated Chicago in Super Bowl XLI
Offense: Spread Quarterback: Peyton Manning I loved the guy in college and I started rooting for the Colts because of him(until they switched the divisions around in 2002). Peyton finally won the big one that had eluded him up until that point. He's the best quarterback the Colts have had since Johnny U. Grade: 5 out of 5
Running Back: Joseph Addai After having a 2 back rotation last season with Dominic Rhodes, Joseph Addai had one hell of a year, capped off by the game winning TD against the Patriots. Look for Addai to be a clone of Edgerrin James in this offense. Grade: 4 out of 5
Wide Receivers: Key Player-Reggie Wayne I know some people will think I'm a Marvin Harrison hater because I think Reggie Wayne is a better WR. Marvin has become the 2nd WR on the team because he is a better route runner. Wayne is the deep threat that makes it possible for Marvin and 1st Round pick Anthony Gonzalez and TE Dallas Clark to roam freely in the middle. Grade: 5 out of 5
Offensive Line: Key Player-C Jeff Saturday In a hurry up offense, he is the captain of the line. He does all of the blocking assignments at the line and he is always on top of his game. Ryan Diem and Tarik Glenn are dominate as well. Grade: 4.5 out of 5
Defense: 4-3 Cover 2 Defensive Line: Key Player-DE Dwight Freeney Freeney is the pressure end in this defense, which relies on the line to pressure the quarterback. Robert Mathis and Anthony "Booger" McFarland also pressure the line as well. Grade: 3.5 out of 5
Linebacker: Key Player-OLB Rob Morris Gary Brackett replaced him in 2005 as the middle linebacker, but Morris is now the starting OLB in this cover 2 scheme. He is good against the run. Grade: 3 out of 5
Cornerback: Key Player-Marlin Jackson I think the corners of Jackson and Kelvin Hayden(who sealed the Super Bowl win with a pick) are here to stay as a great pair of corners. Both are good one-on-one corders and both have the ability to shut down the opponents passing games. Grade: 4.5 out of 5
Safety: Key Player-Bob Sanders Bob Sanders is a great hitter who really helped this defense transform late in the season after he returned from injury. If he stays healthy, the sky is the limit for this defense. Grade: 4.5 out of 5
Special Teams K: Adam Vinatieri P: Hunter Smith One is the best clutch kicker of all-time, the other is one hell of a punter. Grade: 5 out of 5
Overview The Colts will make it to the playoffs, but their reign as world champs will end with a loss to the Chargers.
It's the day after Championship Sunday and fans in Chicago and Indianapolis are trying to book their trips to Miami now. Here's the rundown from the games...
NFC Championship Game Chicago 39, New Orleans 14. Explain to me why Reggie Bush decided to start pointing fingers at the Bears defense? All he did was #### off Brian Urlacher and the rest of Da Bears. After Reggie's 88 yard TD catch at the beginning of the 3rd quarter, the score was 16-14. 23 unanswered points for the Bears, led by Thomas Jones's 2 TDs and a jump ball TD from Bernard Berrian and it was all said and done. I'm happy for Lovie Smith, I wish he would have become the head coach in St. Louis before he left for Chicago. I might have jumped on the Rams bandwagon then. As for Rex Grossman, he almost did what I thought he'd do(11 out of 26). For the Saints, maybe next year Reggie won't do the point.
AFC Championship Game Indianapolis 38, New England 34. After Peyton threw that interception to Samuel for a touchdown, I had the "not again" thought in my head. Being a Tennessee Vols fan, I have seen the high points for Peyton(winning the 1997 SEC championship, beating Alabama 4 times, directing the band on his senior day) and the bad days(losing to the Patriots over and over and over, not winning the big bowl game, do we remember Florida?) and I was hoping that this was going to be the game where he finally puts it all together. After that pick, I had my doubts. Then a 32 point second half happened and the mighty Tom Brady(he's still not Joe Montana) fell like Goliath. Peyton, ya finally won the big one...well until the Super Bowl.
It's going to be an interesting Super Bowl....I'll talk about that next week
People always tell me about how their team is the best. If ya talk to a Saints fan, it's because of Drew Brees and the RB tandem of Reggie Bush and Deuce McAllister. If ya talk to a Patriots fan, it's due to Bill Belichek and Tom Brady and that awesome defense. If ya talk to a Colts fan, it's because of Peyton, Marvin, Reggie, and Brandon. If ya talk about Da Bears, ya think about Thomas Jones, Cedric Benson, and the Monsters of the Midway....Urlacher, The defensive line, Briggs, Vasher, Manning, and Devin Hester.
The fans of these 4 teams are great. I know plenty of them, more Bears fans than any because I live in Illinois. Here are my picks...
NFC Championship Game New Orleans @ Chicago, 2 PM FOX. It is a classic matchup o####reat offense(New Orleans' is ranked #1) verses a great defense(Chicago has a top 5). Here are 3 questions to ponder before watching this game: Can Drew Brees pick about Da Bears D? Which RB tandem will lead their team to victory? Will Rex Grossman have a short leash?
Here are the answers to the questions above. 1. No, Brees has had a great season. However, a great defense normally shuts down a great offense. Brees has not seen a cover 2 defense in a while and I don't think he'll be able to hit the seams along the sidelines that a quarterback needs to do to defeat a cover 2. 2. I think Reggie and Deuce are the better pair, but Jones and Benson willed the Bears to victory last weekend and I think they can do it again. 3. Rex will not be pulled because he will only have to complete about 50% of his passes(probably a 11 for 20 game). I'm going with Da Bears to make it back to the Super Bowl for the first time in 21 years, 21-13.
AFC Championship Game New England @ Indianapolis, 5:30 PM CBS. This game has some questions that need answered too. 1. Can Tom Brady continue is mastery of Peyton Manning? 2. Will the Patriots be able to run against the Colts D? 3. Can Peyton finally win the big one?
The answers are...1. No, Peyton breaks through because of the weakened Patriots secondary. 2. Maybe, Corey Dillon has become a north-south runner. These runners haven't given Indy much problems in the playoffs(see Larry Johnson and Jamal Lewis). The types of runners that gave Indy problems in the regular season are the cut-back runners(like Maurice Jones-Drew, Fred Tayler, Travis Henry). This is the type of back Laurence Maroney is. I don't believe that the Patriots will run the ball that much anyway. 3. Yes! Manning will lead his team to victory because of the vertical passing game. There will not be any Ty Law or Rodney Harrison sightings on the field today. Indy 31-21.
NFL Draft Preview: RB These running backs are the top 5 at the position... 1. Adrian Peterson, Jr.-Oklahoma 2. Marshawn ####, Jr.-California 3. Michael Bush, Jr.-Louisville 4. Tony Hunt, Sr.-Penn State 5. Garrett Wolfe, Sr.-Northern Illinois
I think the first 3 are at least first round picks. Wolfe reminds me of a smaller Marshall Faulk.
