Blogger Competition, Round Three: What is More Likely... Patriots (16-0) or Dolphins (0-16)?
Oct 27, 2007 | 4:21PM | report this

Caught in a storm of a media glare the New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins are being scrutinized for very different reasons. Throughout this article I am not going to rehash every game that has brought the Patriots to their now (7-0) record, and I am not going to reopen the wounds of the seven losses for the Miami Dolphins. No what I am going to do is try to answer the question, "What is More Likely... Patriots (16-0) or Dolphins (0-16)?" to the best of my ability....

In order to gain perspective for this subject, one has to actually delve into both teams remaining schedules, injuries, stats and what actually counts the most, in my opinion, heart and determination. And while there is also no doubt that the halfway mark should count for something, I have always found that "Any Given Sunday" and constantly being an "Underdog" can completely change everything. . . .

THE (7-0) NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS:

We all know how this season started for the Pats and their beloved head coach Bill Bellichick. But just in case you were stuck in a dungeon or orbiting the Earth, let me quickly catch you up.

In Week One, during the game against the Jets, it was brought to the attention of the entire Free World, that the New England Patriots were caught filming signals being called from the Jets sideline. And much to the dismay of Patriots fans, and to the delight of Patriots haters, the NFL fined both the team and Bill Bellichick. Many teams around the league rumbled about some of the same activity occurring while they too played the Patriots, but it seemed that only a monetary fine and loss of draft picks was in order.

Many thought that with the Patriots being branded "Cheaters" they would fall by the wayside. But, as it turned out, the money was an insignificant small price to pay for a team who would go on to become (7-0). If anything, this brief blip made this team, who has already become a Dynasty, even more determined to prove that they are still the elite, creme de la creme of the National Football League.

With a combustible combination of Tom Brady, a completely changed Randy Moss, and multitude of talented receivers, running backs and tight ends to throw to, they have found a chemistry that propelled the Patriots onto one victory after the next. On average the Patriots are scoring (39.9) points a game. Tom Brady seems poised to surpass Payton Mannings record of forty-nine touchdowns set back in 2004. As of this moment, Brady has already thrown twenty-seven touchdown passes, and it seems to be a very good possibility that he could finish the season above the sixty TD mark.

With such perfection coming out of New England, one would have to give serious thought to the possibility that the Patriots could be the team to finally go through a season undefeated since the '72 Dolphins. Still this is something that has not occurred in almost thirty-five years. The reason this record has not been tied yet....it is almost an impossible accomplishment in today's computerized NFL.

With the advanced equipment that is used to study each player's strength and weaknesses, it is very probable that the Patriots will run into an opponent who will find a way to stop them. So far this season the Patriots have yet to truly face a tough defense. A defense that will put significant pressure on  Brady and shut down their passing game as well as their running game. What will happen then? Will Tom Brady be able to maintain that same level of composed consistency? Will Moss be able to get out in the open, down field when Brady airs it out? I think these questions and many more will be answered over the next two weeks.

Remaining games left on Patriots Schedule:

Week 8-   WASHINGTON at NEW ENGLAND

Week 9-   NEW ENGLAND at INDIANAPOLIS

Week 10- BYE

Week 11- NEW ENGLAND at BUFFALO

Week 12- PHILADELPHIA at NEW ENGLAND

Week 13- NEW ENGLAND at BALTIMORE

Week 14- PITTSBURGH at NEW ENGLAND

Week 15- NEW YORK JETS at NEW ENGLAND

Week 16- MIAMI DOLPHINS at NEW ENGLAND

Week 17-  NEW ENGLAND at NEW YORK GIANTS

The Patriots will take on the Washington Redskins this Sunday at Gillette Stadium. And while it is no secret that the Redskins' offense has been in dire straits due to injuries on the line, Greg Williams defense is rated amongst the top five throughout the league. Free Safety, Sean Taylor is rated first in the league with five defensive interceptions this season.

London Fletcher alone has had seventy tackles for the season. Forty on his own, and an interception returned for a touchdown last week against the Cardinals. Not only that, but Fletcher also has some old scores to settle. In 2002 London Fletcher, while playing for the Rams, lost Super Bowl XXXVI to Tom Brady and his Patriots. He also then went on to play for Buffalo where he would meet the Patriots twice a season from 2002-2006.

In Brady's time with the Patriots he has beaten every team in the NFL except the Washington Redskins.  Back in 2003 during Brady's only appearance against the Redskins he was limited by a talented Washington defense to only two touchdowns and in turn threw three interceptions. Could this be the week that Tom Brady and his offense falter?

The following week the Patriots will travel to Indianapolis, the one place where they are NOT welcome. They will face their rivals the (6-0) Indianapolis Colts. It is the most anticipated game of the 2007 NFL season. To be honest, I do not even think the Super Bowl is billed as highly as this game is. It does not get much better than Brady vs. Manning, a classic showdown! If anyone on the schedule for the Patriots can give them a run for their money, it is Payton Manning and his Colts.

In a season where there are many doubters to the true legitimacy of whether the Patriots are THAT good, I would have to say that, "Yes, I do think they are that good offensively, but I am not sold on the fact that they will be able too win every single remaining game left this season." I have not brought up their defense, as I am not overly impressed with them. To me, I think the best way to sum up their defense is to look at who has scored the most against points against them. It was last Sunday when the (0-7) Dolphins scored twenty-eight points. To me that just does not say much for the Patriots' defense.

There is just too much good competition ahead of the Patriots. Not only will the 'Skins and Colts give them a run for their money, but I believe the Steelers and the Giants also have a very good shot at it as well. But if you were to strip it down and look solely at who has had a tougher schedule, the Colts, by far, have played a harder fought season than the New England Patriots. Therefore I do not believe that the Patriots will finish this season undefeated at (16-0).

THE 0-7 MIAMI DOLPHINS:

In a season where brown paper bags seem to be on backorder in Miami, truth is, if it were not for bad luck the Miami Dolphins would have no luck at all. From losing key players in the off-season, to season ending injuries, the Dolphins are now finding themselves the butt of every joke around the league. I find it completely amazing that this team has not gone into the Witness Protection Program to hide from their fans.

This week we find that the Fins have swam across the "Pond" to take on the New York Giants in Merry Ole London, at Wembley Stadium.  Not only is this a tough situation by just traveling, but the Dolphins find they are facing a team who has managed to pull themselves up by their cleat straps too win the last five games in a row. The New York Giants have become a formidable opponent for any team, but for the Dolphins it is just another Sunday they would rather not face....

The Dolphins lost their Vet. quarterback Trent Green when he decided to lower his head against Travis Johnson during the Fins/Texans game three weeks ago. And while there has been much debate over who was in the wrong, Trent Green is done for the season and possibly for good. This has allowed Cleo Lemon to come in and take the helm. To be honest with you, I was kinda impressed while looking at Lemons stats. Did you know, for instance, that in the two weeks he has been quarterback for the Dolphins he has thrown for 214.3 yards a game? He also threw for two touchdowns. Not great, but not bad either.

Of course there is no reason to jump on that train, as I have found that Cam Cameron is considering replacing Lemon with back up QB John Beck. Why? Well maybe he wants to cement Beck as the future for the Dolphins, but with a lack of consistency at that crucial position it is bound to ruin any quarterback in the NFL. So unless Cameron is willing to stick with one QB it very well may be a possibility that the Miami Dolphins could become the first winless team in the NFL since the 1976 Bucs.

To say that the Defense for the Dolphins has been abysmal is a gross understatement. When a defense for any team allows an average of thirty-plus points to be scored on them all season, with two games surpassing the forty point mark you know it is time to pack up the moving van. I think it would be in the best interest of Wayne Huizenga to do some serious house keeping once this season comes to a close.

Remaining games left on Dolphins Schedule:

Week 8-   DOLPHINS VS NEW YORK GIANTS (LONDON, ENGLAND)

Week 9-   BYE

Week 10- BUFFALO BILLS at MIAMI DOLPHINS

Week11- MIAMI DOLPHINS at PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

Week 12- MIAMI DOLPHINS at PITTSBURGH STEELERS

Week 13- NEW YORK JETS at MIAMI DOLPHINS

Week 14- MIAMI DOLPHINS at BUFFALO BILLS

Week 15- BALTIMORE RAVENS at MIAMI DOLPHINS

Week 16- MIAMI DOLPHINS at NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

Week 17- CINCINNATI BENGALS  at MIAMI DOLPHINS

By looking at the above schedule I honestly believe that the Dolphins will not lose in week nine. It is actually a sure bet. No I am just kidding. Sorry long articles make me a bit giddy.

Here are a few suggestions too coach Cameron on how to win at least one game this season:

1- Do not pull Cleo Lemon and replace him with rookie John Beck.

2- Always make sure that all of your players are educated enough to know where London is on the map.

3-Do not allow players to sit in traffic at the stadium after a game, as "Fender Benders" are bound to happen.

4- Whatever you did in the second half of the game against the Patriots to mount a mini comeback, use again on teams such as the Jets, Ravens and Bengals.

5- Let Jason Taylor give the pep talks to the team. This guy knows how to motivate.

6-Look up the winning formula of the 1972 Dolphins and apply exactly as written.

Seriously, with so much turmoil upsetting the Dolphins this season, fans of the team either have to give up and start looking forward to next season, or laugh at the ridiculousness of it all. Zach Thomas was in a fender bender last Sunday in stadium traffic. He has whiplash and will not be in London. Linebacker Channing Crowder treated the media to a peak into his sad education by saying he could not point out London on the map unless it was already written in. He knows Italy is in the shape of a boot, but that's about it. Oh, and he was relieved to learn that they speak English in London....WOW!

Jason Taylor was the only thing that impressed me coming out of Miami. Let me give you just a sample from his quote given recently,

"There's certain things in life, in this world, we can control and certain things we can't. And if we waste our time and energy and worry too much about things we can't control, then I think were not giving ourselves a good enough chance."

That statement, Dolphin players, is something to hang your hat on. Build from there and know that, while this is not a playoff year, the worse thing you could allow is to have your name placed in history as winless right next to the 1976 Bucs....

So all in all, if I have to answer which team will achieve the status of undefeated, or winless, it would have to be the Miami Dolphins going winless. I just see too much possibility in the teams left facing the Patriots to allow them to finish the season undefeated. And while my opinion throughout this has been based on the sure thing teams... I have to finish with this......An Underdog on Any Given Sunday can change Everything!

Hiya Ang, good post! Excellent breakdown of the Dolphins and Patriots. I see New England going 15-1 this season. The Dolphins will go winless. They are an epically BAD team. They'll FINALLY take the 2001 Panthers off the hook for most consecutive single-season losses. But look at the bright side for the Fins: two years after that abysmal season, the Panthers very nearly won the Super Bowl.

Hiya Jon,

Thanks my friend. It took me a good bit, but finally I got it done. I swear I have to redo it three times when I write a post, because it will freeze when I add my pics. I wanted to add in the video of that huge Jason Taylor robot in London, but I could not get it. If you have not seen it, it is really worth taken a look at.

I think the Pats may make it to 15-1, or maybe 14-2. The Dolphins are just in some seriously sad shape. I am not sure that they can win at all, but with the way the Jets are playing...they might get in one win.The Fins may very well help expunge that Panther record. I am sure that would make you very happy.

Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy your Football tonight and tomorrow!

Hey there Lisa!

How are you? Everything good there on the home front? I know it was a tough week for all my friends out there in Southern Cali. I have kept y'all in my prayers, and will continue to do so. If you need anything at all just let me know!

Well I am sure glad you loved that week 9 win. I am afraid that may be the best weekend the Dolphins have all season, lol! I am so glad you enjoyed this. That means a lot too me!

I saw some of the highlights from the USC and other than the first quarter they seemed to hang right in there with Oregon. I am sorry. I know it was a tough loss.

Hey enjoy the rest of your weekend, and let's both keep our fingers and toes crossed that the Redskins defense can do what no other has done yet...Stop the Pats!

Take care my friend!

Yeah I thought maybe old Cam could use some tips, because whatever he has been doing so far has not helped, lol!

Do the 'Boys have a bye this week? I think so, but I am not 100%. Anyway, have a great weekend, and enjoy a full day of football tomorrow!

Great read Ang... I enjoyed this post very much, I have to thank PSU for playing like garbage against OSU in the first half, so that I needed to leave the room, therefore giving me the chance to read this sooner. Do me a favor and post something else tomorrow, so that if the 'Skins struggle tomorrow, I will have something else to occupy my time. =) Hope all is well...

Hey there Kev,

Well then I have to thank PSU and OSU for allowing me to have the pleasure of your time and compliments. But I am sorry for their loss. You know I have always had such high respect PSU's head coach Joe Paterno. Too me he is what every aspiring coach should model themselves after.

You know I would do that for you tomorrow, but I have to run out to Norfolk, because my Grandparent home is being sold, and I have to go and get the furniture that was left to me. I am hoping to be done before the 'Skins game starts. But, after I will definitely try and put something out. Let's just hope that when the clock clicks off the last few seconds in the fourth quarter....Redskins fans everywhere will be jumping up and down and screaming wildly in victory!

Thanks for stopping in and I will chat with you soon. I am well, as I hope you are too.
Enjoy your Sunday. Hey, is it beautiful fall weather up there in Bean Town? I have heard that the Fall there in Boston is breathtaking. Just curious....

I like the way you got to the point with "heart and determination"

never heard the term "computerized NFL" but you nailed it perfectly..good job!

I think it's more likely that a team go 16-0 than 0-16 personally.

Want to hear something funny? A few nights ago, I dreamed you won this competition. From the looks of this post, you should advance.

Great read.

Thank you very much Former88fan. The one thing that has always drawn me to sports is the heart and determination that goes with it hand in hand.

LOL, yeah I actually used computerized NFL, because of all computer programs that are used to create a player in a Madden game, for instance. They get it perfect with these guys stats for just about every facet of the game. So just imagine what teams use to break down a player...

I am hoping that the Redskins can do some good tomorrow against the Pats. What a complete boost it would be to the Redskins if they won! Hey I am Redskins fan, so you will have to forgive me. :0)~

That is one of the best compliments I have ever received here. I am not so sure that I will win, or even advance, but thank you so much for the vote of confidence. With you and all the other talented folks out there it is a great comp. Don't count yourself out!

Thanks for the great comment!

The possibility of either accomplishing either record is very slim. The Pats best chance for a loss is at Indy, but they (PATS) seem in a league of their own.

I left this comment on someone else's blog: What if the Rams (also winless) and the Dolphins go winless? What are the odds of that happening? They don't play each other this year so it is possible.

Great post. Good luck in the tournament.

Yeah the fall can be quite breathtaking up here in the Boston area... no doubt about that. I have not gotten out as much as I would like to see it, though I was on a golf course last weekend and most of the trees were changing and it was quite a sight. The weather today is nice... yesterday when I was out with friends, it was kind of crumby, rainy and overcast. Cool, hope you have a good Sunday...

At least Cameron will be able to lay the blame for this loss on the slickness of the English grass. But then again we English know when we see it is putrid and mediocre sports events fashioning itself on being something special.
The chaps and I will go off and play some rugger's. Then have some tea and crumpets.
What a waste of an afternoon for the fans in London ! They should've gone to an English pub and play some darts and have a few beers.
Are the commentators so inane and inanimate or what ?

The Pats do seem to be in a league of their own, but I think very soon they are going to have to rejoin everyone else.

You know when I was researching this article, I did give thought to the Fins and Rams both going winless. How crazy would that be?

My weekend has been great, and from the way it sounds you too have had a great one.

I am sitting here with butterflies, because the game is about to start. OMG, Poor Miami! They kicked an onside kick that slid out of bounds. Man they almost had it!

That is so true! It really did come down to slick grass causing the ball going out of bounds on the onside kick. Man I thought the Fins had it!

goblue,

You are right, the Patriots will go 16-0, as long as they are able to get away with issues like cutting off communications to their opponents for a whole half.

Would someone explain to me why it seems this is a constant issue at Gillette? Not only that, but the rules clearly state that if the opponent has no comm. than neither should the home team. So please explain why the Pats had communications the whole first half?

I am sorry, but I think the Colts will stop the Patriots!

You and I will get along famously - you're a Redskins fan, I'm a Cowboy fan. Don't worry, I'm not obnoxious and clearly recognize talent when I see it. I really enjoyed your post. Very well written and thought provoking.

With regard to the Pats, there are several games left on their schedule that could prove troublesome. The Ravens play good defense, and the Steelers will be tough. The game next week with the Colts should give us all an opportunity to discuss how good the Pats are. For that matter, if the Colts win, are they now going to be ordained as the best team in the NFL? We'll see.

First and foremost I'm takin' this opportunity to apologize for the proverbial as$ kickin' we delivered to your beloved 'skins.
Furthermore to show that we weren't being classless we did keep the score below 50 even if your guys weren't able to cover the spread.
Besides many of your guys simply have problems having to count above 50.

Those are very good points. I really think that the Colts will be able to take the Pats simply because it is in Indy. The Steelers will be a tough win, but it is in Foxborough, so that may play a big role in that game.

Hey tophatal,

Ouch! Thanks for being so kind as to not rub it in too much, lol. I think we shall agree to disagree over that game. The reason the 'Skins were not able to cover the spread was no headset communications the entire first half, while the Pats had it ( RULE BOOK VIOLATION). :0)~

I just do not understand why that is always an issue in Foxborough, hmmmm....Anyway, what would be the point of being friends if we can't brag a bit? Congrats to you on their win!

Insomuch as the game between the Pats and 'skins was basically a 'no contest' . I do believe that the 'skins' players were somewhat immature in complaining about
the Pats running up the score. It's not as if they contested the game ? They were God*amn awful and should apologize to their coach. What the hell did Gibbs do to deserve such a vapid display ?
These players have no shame and should be more than remorseful towards the fans.

Hey Top,

First of all let me say that I like you a lot as a friend, but in so much as saying that many nasty things about a team I dearly love, well I am starting to get a bit aggravated...

We will not agree about that game yesterday, other than the Patriots are a good football team. You know as well as I do, that this issue of equipment problems and many other numerous things, have been coming out of New England for a while now. And if my memory serves me correctly, you had a problem with Belichick cheating. I have to go back and look at my one post to make sure I am correct.

The Redskins are a good team, who because of not being able to have the full advantage like the Pats did in the first half of the game, were down to a team, that is a fantastic team, by twenty-four points. Coming back was an impossibility because our offensive line is out due to injuries.

But here is my problem...you tell me how the number three rated defense in the National Football League allowed fifty-two points scored on them after not allowing any team all season to score over twenty points on them? Something does not add up. But yes they played horribly yesterday.

But to suggest that the players on the Redskins are ignorant by not being able to count higher than fifty, is as you put it, God*amn ridiculous. I would never to go those extremes when rubbing in that the Redskins beat another team. Take a win, banter, but don’t get personal, it is not good sportsmanship, which we both have said we appreciate.

Hello Ang. I realize this is a tad off topic, but I just read where the Cowboys signed Tony Romo to a long term extension. I admit I feel a little odd posting a comment regarding the Cowboys on a Redskin fans blog. Never the less, as a football fan, I thought you might want to know.

Here's a brief exert from the article:

Romo and the Cowboys have agreed in principal on a six-year extension worth $67.5 million, which includes just north of $30 million guaranteed, league sources told FOXSports.com

Joe Gibbs is a very classy man, and of course he is not going to say how disappointed he was that Bill just kept on scoring. Belichick is classless, period.

Quote, "What do you want us to do, kick a field goal?" Belichick replied. "It's 38-0. It's fourth down. We were just out there playing." HUH? Classless. And I am not the only one who feels that way. Thirty-one other teams feel the same.

Also answer me this...why did the refs continuously look the other way at blatant fouls the Pats had? Helmet-Helmet, right in front of the ref...nothing. Randy Moss pushing off for a TD, right in front of the ref...nothing. The announcers were even speaking about it.

As far as how good the Patriots are still remains to be seen until they play the Colts in Indy this weekend. If, and I do mean if, they win then they can be crowned the best! And suddenly I have become a Colts fan!

Take care Top,
Ang

You know as well as I do, that this issue of equipment problems and many other numerous things, have been coming out of New England for a while now.

Another report listed the only communication malfunction occurring with the Redskins O Coordinator, Al Saunders. League rules state that if one sideline is without communication with the coaches box, the other sideline must shut down their communication as well. Since the only problem reported was with Saunders, New England was allowed to maintain their communication.

At any rate, considering the recent past with the "Spygate" issue, it does appear to be more than a coincidence.

MoonDogLeft,

That's okay. It actually gives me a minute to cool off over my last comment. Wow that is a lot of money. 67.5 million dollars is a lot to live up to.

Well, it seems Jerry Jones has every confidence in his QB, and that makes for a good environment for the whole team, unless Owens gets upset over how much Romo is making. I appreciate the update. It is always my thing to catch up on things with the Redskins first and then going directly to the rest of the NFC East.

Take care,
Ang

Oh and Top,

Here is some quotes from Redskins players that you said are ,"somewhat immature"...

Back across Gillette Stadium, several other Redskins players said they took no offense at the Patriots' approach.

"It's our job to keep them off the board," Pierson Prioleau said. "This is football. It's a competitive sport. They are a good team. We just have to do what we need to do to keep them out of the end zone.

Ladell Betts: "I think they were playing football. How [else] would you want to call it? We're on the other end and we didn't stop them. So I don't think it's running it up. It's playing football."

James Thrash: "Just from watching the Patriots on film during the last few weeks, New England has always played from the first quarter through the fourth quarter. That's just their mentality. I don't think it's them trying to rub it in."

Jason Campbell said that when the Redskins have a big lead, the team's approach is to back off.

"That's just what we do," he said. "Their motto might be different. They might have a different approach in the way they do it."

Campbell added: "They were going for it on fourth downs, but that's an NFL team and we have to stop it. We're all here in the NFL and we're all here to make plays."

So maybe they are not as immature as you thought...

I noted the previous posts, especially the one from tophatal. I have a lot of respect for the Redskins, with the Cowboys having played them twice annually for years. I understand your passion!! The Pats scored a meaningless TD late in the game against the Boys a few weeks ago and I didn't appreciate it.

While I believe at some point the Pats will get what's coming to them, I don't see it happening in the immediate future. To be honest, I hope the Colts blow their doors off. However, since the Colts are a truly class organization, they'd take the win without making a child like statement.

Well, MNF is starting and I'm off to watch. Have a good night. We're playing you guys in a few weeks. Should offer us an opportunity to talk a little trash!

Ciao!

MoonDogLeft,

Thanks for the help. You got caught in the middle of that and I apologize. I am always very reserved, well usually, about my 'Skins, because I can get way too passionate about them, and I try to refrain from letting my emotions overcoming me.

But, this time I just could not hold back, and I regret that, because tophatal and I are good friends.

Anyway, thank you for the info on Saunders.
Take care,
Ang
