I have always been an admirer of how football players adapt and make adjustments in how they play due to the elements. Man vs. Man vs. Nature. Can any one of us deny that games such as The Ice Bowl and others like it add purity to the game itself? I know that my favorite images of this game are men down on the line where their breath gives away the intensity of their emotions. So with this being said, who had the bright idea to dome the game?
I have always groaned at the notion of having to watch a game played in any dome. I think that it robs so much from the players and the fans. Around the league there is a total of nine domes, two of them being retractable. Now I am sure that they were thought of by someone who thought more tickets could be sold if fans were not huddled up together freezing to death. Wrong! Give me an emotionally charged, close game and I will be nice and toasty! Ever since I can remember I have always enjoyed football from Peewee to High School, College and Pro Football more when the temp dips below forty degrees. A hot cup of coffee, or cocoa along with the smell of hot roasted peanuts all add to the atmosphere of the game.
As bad as domes are there is a worse danger lurking inside. That's right Artificial Turf can be a players worst nightmare. This freak of nature has been blamed for numerous injuries that could have been avoidable. I know for myself that "Turf Toe" sounds ridiculous, but is actually a painful injury that can sideline a player for up to three weeks or longer. So why is this acceptable for a fourth of the stadiums in the league?
Only nine out of thirty-two teams play inside. I would think that teams who play in a Stadium as opposed to a Dome would have the advantage. Now sure you can bring up the Colts, but Payton Manning is the answer to your question. Do me a favor and think about this. . . out of all the domed teams, only Minnesota and Detroit can really say their winter weather is bad. On the other hand, winter months for teams like Green Bay, Buffalo, New England, Denver and Chicago are brutal and all played outside.
In my opinion the only team that truly deserves a dome is the Cardinals, and man what a dome they have! Not only do they have a retractable roof, but a retractable field allowing them to have real grass instead of turf. Dallas is also a team that allows the elements to affect their game, while letting their fans stay dry. Well at least until 2009 when their new stadium will open.
Look bottom line here is this. . . take a football, add some real men along with the unpredictability of the elements, mix them all together and you will achieve perfection!
Thank you very much ProudMamma! I like the name o' lady of the pigskin! Maybe I will adopt it. How is the Terrible Towel search going? If there is anything I can do please let me know.
I really do appreciate the comment.
Take care!

You sure know how to flatter a girl! Thank you so much! And how could I have had the Best Blog 2 days in a row, when your Blog was awesome today? You were featured on Fox Funhouse today btw, congrats on that!
I found the artist rendition of the "Ice Bowl" by looking through Yahoo photos. It is beautiful. Football played at its best!
Thanks for the comment and talk with you soon.

AWESOME blog! I love watching football in the elements. I especially love when the calendar turns to December. Outdoor football, on GRASS, in the elements, in December and January, CANNOT be beat!
The Cardinals have a SWEET dome. They need it for the hot months of September and October (it still is above 100 degrees in Phoenix in October).
I still remember the old Metropolitan Stadium. Now THAT was football!
Thanks my friend, I am so glad you enjoyed it. My favorite time of the year is November thru January! Of course my B-day is four days after Christmas, so that and the fact that my Favorite sport revs up then probably have something to do with that. Not to mention all the holidays.
But there is nothing like football in the snow, ice, sleet and rain. You really get to see how a player reacts. The better they react, the better the player!
I know I was looking at pics for the Cardinals dome and I never get tired of their engineering feat. Imagine...the field actually moves outside 350 days a year. Awesome! Plus, I have to give it to the Cowboys, because I went on a virtual tour of their new stadium...WOW! Of course the score they were showing was Redskins 7, Cowboys 24...I think that was the score. Aggravating, lol! We will see how long Snyder takes to build the Redskins a new stadium. He is already looking from what I understand.
It is funny you brought up old Met Stadium, because I was just talking about how I think that is what did the Vikings in. If I were their fan, I would protest until we moved back outside! Some very awesome games played there that is for sure.
You know I appreciate your thoughts jon. Talk with you soon!

Nice to see you again Hybird. You are always intitled to your opinion here. Also thanks for the correction. I went and checked it out, and finally found it. So it now reads 2009.
The Funhouse? I didnt even know i was signed up for that. Almost all my posts are funny "stuff" and never make it there. I write something serious and it makes the Funhouse. Go figure.
oh. I just realized you cant get there from the blog site , thats why i didnt see it. Fox needs some linking work done, so we can at least know when someones giving us props.
I actually just found it myself the other day. You have to go to the more tab and it is in there. It would be nice to see on the page where all blogs are posted, the tag I mean. Cool site though. Well your article deserved it!
vb i agree completely when Seattle blew up the kingdome we threw a HUGE party me and abuot 30 others. We went down there and tried to get pieces but no luck but we did manage to get COMPLETELY cover in dust!! Good times.

Last night I went looking for pictures and I came across The Mall of America, which was built where Metropolitan Stadium used to be. I think it is really cool how they have home plate there for all to see and a red chair where Killebrew hit the longest HR. But having the Stadium still around would be better!
It is sad when things that have meant so much to us become just a memory.
cuzifer, LOL! I would tend to think that many Viking fans would agree that the dome needs to go. I am sure that they hate being ragged for not being out in the elements.
I know your were kidding, but I really want you to tell us next time how you truly feel! LMAO :0)
First of all great post. But I do have to add that If you lived in the heat and humidity in New Orleans like I do, you would be begging for a dome with air condition.
Thank you Gambit. I gave serious thought to that before I wrote this. I too live in an area that is humid and hot, not as bad as New Orleans, but we still get it bad and have hurricanes every few years. I would prefer to be outside still for sports though, but that is just my opinion. Thanks for the comment!
So what would you call Texas Stadium vbchic. since they never finished the roof, is it still a dome?
I hear the new Stadium is supposed to be colsed yet allow for the roof and both ends to open up.
Texas, do you really want to know what I call Texas Stadium? LOL...j/k. I would call it an incomplete dome, but it worked out well allowing the elements to come into play. I have to admit that the new stadium, I did the virtual tour, is awesome! I can't wait to see the SB there.
Thanks for the comment Texas come back anytime, and hey, have a great weekend!

some player years ago was asked if he liked astro turf he said he didnt know he hadnt smoked it... and i like john maddens dislike of domes football is an outside sport, and when the dirt gets stuck in the face guards of the helmets....
How are you? I hope all is well with you and yours. Let me say Congrats on the Steelers win, and tell you I was sorry to hear about the Wildcats.
So you had your own sports' radio show? That must have been awesome in itself! But to interview a player from the Ice Bowl...WOW! I bet you have some awesome stories to tell!
I have been a fan of Randle EL for a long time. He was so impressive yesterday, but then again, he usually is. I hope that his high hamstring pull heals quickly and that he can rest. That way he can come back soon!
That is hysterical! Football is definitely an outdoor sport, I have always thought so. Plus, the only place a dome is used in football is in the pro's. You are so right... there is nothing like a player coming up with a face mask full of dirt and mud, lol!
Ang!! Chic!! VB!! Fabulous post!! the last pic resembles a Picasso's hors d'oeuvre....They should start a Women Football League similar to that of Women Soccer League..What do you think???
I live in Atlanta....We have beautiful weather in the fall and early winter (50-65 in December most of the time)....And we have a freaking DOME!!!!! what gives.....Football is made to be an OUTDOOR sport.
Thank you for your comment, and I am pretty sure at one point, ten plus years ago, they did have a womans football league. Never really took off. I love the men, lol, so I will take my guys out there on the field! :0)
I am with you 100%! I will never understand the need for a dome. Your weather in Atlanta is very similar to the weather we have here in South Eastern VA, and DC. It is beautiful weather for outdoor sports!

I have been a Washington Redskins Fan all of my life. I come from four generations of "We bleed Burgundy and Gold" Redskins fanatics! I have three teenage sons who are following in this great tradition.
I also am a huge Cal Ripken fan. Congrats to his Hall of fame induction. I would rather go and see a baseball game in person, then watch it on TV. My oldest Son is doing his best to make his dream come true. He has played baseball his whole life, and is being scouted now.
I live in Virginia Beach, Va. I am a native, not a tourist. I work for Canon USA and I love every minute of it! I believe you should Love life, and Live for Redskins Football! HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!
