First let me say this: Wow... College Football has turned into a crazy show over the past two weekends... I can't wait for the others on the top to take a fall.
Second let me say Boomer! (Sooner) My boys in the great LA (OK-LA that is) took care of business in a game most expected a larger margin of victory. In those games, you know the ones that are 102 year old rivalry games, you never know what will happen. So the W is satisfying to me.
Okay, now that we have addressed those, I want to get amped for my Boys in Crimson and Cream. They are playing a HUGE game this coming Saturday. They are facing a red hot 5-0 Missouri. Missouri, coming off an absolute pounding of Nebraska, still has to prove themselves again against another big team. While Sam Bradford threw for 3 touchdowns, Missouri's Daniel threw 2, ran for 2, and passed for over 400 yds! The Sooners will have to step up as well, like they did against Texas. D. Murray will have to provide a spark like he did in the form of a 65 yd td run against Texas. Malcom Kelly will have to fight through cramps like he did to catch the game winning touchdown pass. Curtis Lofton will have to use those "meat cleaver" arms to strip balls out of un-suspecting RB's like he did to change the momentum of the entire OK TX game.
Missouri, congrats to you for making it this far... but this is where the dream is over. The Sooners are going to start climbing to the top of the BCS (Thanks USC for making that possible last week, thanks LSU for making that possible in a couple games)
So my Dawgs had a bye and I was scared to pick the Hawks considering my predictions haven't been the most stellar (I guess it wouldn't have mattered). Overall it was a tough sporting weekend for the beautifully rainy Seattle area. But hey, at least my hometown team, those Oklahoma Sooners, bounced back and got a great W against Bevo and those Longhorns.
But back to my Seattle boys. The Huskies didn't get a loss which I guess is a plus in my book, and Jake Locker got a weekend to rest, figure out the last couple of weeks, and take in his first year at quarterback. I know he hasn't been the savior as everybody expected, but we gotta break down his first season. The teams he's played so far had more wins combined than the Kansas City Royals baseball team (I swear that's impressive, trust me). Jake Locker has gone up against potentially 2 number 1 teams in the nation (Ohio State and USC) and a UCLA team that after this week is far from a powerhouse, but had the athletes to be one.
So this previous weekend was time for a little rest and recuperation as the Huskies prepare to play up and comping Arizona State (#14), Oregon (#9), another potential #1 in California, and still undefeated Hawaii (#16). The schedule other than that is far from a cake walk considering Pac-10 play is tough throughout the conference.
With all this being said, it's go time for the Huskies. Arizona State in the desert is tough but this is a make or break game for the Dawgs. I'm telling you, once Jake Locker starts throwing the ball more like Roger Staubach rather than Roger Clemens pitcher and once Louis Rankin stops watching the extended DVD of Michael Flatley "Lord of Dance" the Dawgs will be just fine. Now if we could just get those Hawks back on track Seattle might not be so rainy after all.
Now I must first tell all of you that I am a Husky fan till I die. I love all Husky sports. Football, basketball, baseball, a little girls volleyball (national champs), soccer, and any other purple and gold sports. But I am here today to discuss another Pac-10 team: The USC Trojans.
USC has been ranked number one all year, with LSU getting a percentage of first place votes on occasion (which were based on SC not playing that week). Anyway, I am here to praise this SC football team, a team that will win their 12th national championship this year, win their 37th conference title, increase their All-American count to 150 all-time, and name their 8th Heisman trophy winner.
Playing in arguably the best conference in the nation, even though the SEC looks amazingly strong, USC will regain their immortal status beating top 25 teams such as Oregon, Cal, and ASU along the way. The Notre Dame beating will be hard to watch and the championship game against LSU won't be as close as everybody hopes. I mean come on baby, with Pete Carroll calling plays like he's playing NCAA College Football how can you not root for these guys!!!
To those that argue USC shouldn't and won't be ranked #1 all season should watch some game film. We got a back-up running back in Stafon Johnson that would be a stud on any other team in the nation. We got John David Booty who has settled down and learned that he has clones of Mike Williams and Dwayne Jarret in Patrick Turner and Vidal Hazelton. Not to mention Fred Davis who has become one of Booty's favorite target. Davis, a TE, could catch a humming bird while getting hit by a 18-wheeler and still stay on his feet to scamper into the endzone. And this is just their offense. I won't even write about their defense in hope of not scaring the children reading this blog.
So their you have it. The team of the year, the team of the decade, the team of all teams.
And with all this being said.....Dawgs 31 Trojans 30.
After watching week 4, I just couldn't help but get excited for week 5. Can you believe the regular season is nearing at its halfway point? Can you believe the dominance at the top? Below are some of the biggest games I think are happening in week 5. Don't be bashful, let me know which games you think are the biggest.
Friday kicks off with the number 5 West Virginia Mountaineers facing the number 18 South Florida Bulls. South Florida? Usually not a name you'd expect to find in the top 20, but they have been taking care of business. Noel Devine has been playing OUTSTANDING for West Virginia. This will be a huge game for he and his team to prove they belong in the top 5. If you haven't checked out Noel Devine yet, make sure you check him out here, his high school highlights are SICK!
Michigan vs. Northwestern doesn't really have much significance for the poll race, but there are a couple things riding on the line here. First, both teams are 2-2, so one team will come away above .500. Second, Michigan still has a lot to prove. They said their focus is now on a big 10 title... Well now they can start gettin' after it. And since they bean Number 10 Penn State last week, they might actually mean what they say.
Notre Dame at Purdue. ND NEEDS to win as they are 0-4, worst start in school history. Purdue is chompin' at the bit knowing if they win they will be in the top 25, having received the most votes outside of the top teams.
Baylor at Texas A&M. Baylor's 3-1 which is just weird to think of if you're a big 12 fan. Texas A&M misses being in the top 25 after getting beat by Miami (FL).
But the BIGGEST game of the week? This one goes to number 6 Cal at number 11 Oregon. Assuming USC will most likely go to the championship game, the winner of this game could mean a Rose Bowl appearance. And since Oregon has NEVER won a Rose bowl game (the win in 1917 doesn't count since Oregon went because Washington couldn't), this could be huge for them (as hard as that is to say as a Huskies fan). Ånd don't count Cal out. I mean, they are ranked 6. You know some of those teams above will falter, so they could even have their sights set higher than a Rose Bowl.
I'd love to get your input in what you think are the biggest games of week 5. These are just SOME of the games I've come up with. And if you aren't a fan of week 5, then you know week 6 will not disappoint. I mean you have Number 2 LSU vs Number 4 Florida and of course the Red River Shootout in Dallas with Number 3 Oklahoma vs Number 7 Texas. Both of those games could decide the fate of the National Championship Game! Now that's exciting!
So, the time has come...well not completely. For those of you that love sports as much as me you must have seen this kid Noel Devine and his High School highlight tapes from You Tube or any recruiting site on the internet. Well, he's finally made it to college. After rumors of Deion Sanders trying to adopt him among other stereotypical rumors that float around he now plays for the 5th ranked West Virgina Mountaineers.
Devine is playing second fiddle to two heisman candidates, which actually could bode well for him. Behind Steve Slaton and QB Pat White, Devine has averaged 15.1 yards per carry. I mean this kid had 2 carries for over 120 yards last week and ended up with 5 carries for over 130.
To those of you who haven't seen him play he looks as close to a (maybe this is a comment that shouldn't be made) a Reggie Bush/Barry Sanders-esque running back. I mean this guy makes cuts and then instantly is back to full speed. He doesn't stop moving his feet. He doesn't stop looking down the field. He is the man!!!
So, if you haven't had a chance to see him run, take a look at him. Noel Devine baby!! And if you think he is a young star take a look at 13 year old Cody Paul. Too good!!
Now I've always had this crazy idea that two winless teams should be able to participate in a bowl game at the end of the year... Think of the possibilities, one team HAS to win!
Well, this year, it doesn't look like we have to wait till the end of the season to host this "bowl" game. It's about to happen. Which team will come away with a win? Will Carr keep his job? Will Clausen perform?
I'd love to hear your predictions on the game... I think the funniest prediction I've heard so far is a 3-3 outcome, because both QB's will fumble on their own tens, and then the opposing team just won't be able to punch it in the endzone.
It's tragic that two programs such as these have broken records (not the good kind of records) for losses at the beginning of their seasons. Hopefully these teams can turn it around... but in the end, one team HAS to win!
