Yesterday the Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost big time to Georgia Tech. 33-3. Demetrius Jones, the starting ND quarterback, was just awful. He could run, but he couldn't pass and he couldn't handle the pressure of playing his first college football game at Notre Dame Stadium. Jones was not passing the ball very much, which I did not understand. Evan Sharpley was sacked seven times. Jimmy Clausen, the freshman, had the best performance. At this early stage, I think it is too hard to tell who will emerge as the permanent starter. Jones has the most mobility. Sharpley has the most experience. Clausen was the better of the three in Notre Dame's opener. I favor Clausen as the one most likely to take over as starter. He is still young and will get better over the next four seasons.
I don't think NFL kickers get enough respect from fans, the media, or their teammates. I remember reading an article on the web in which analyst Mark Schlereth says that kickers are to be "seen and not heard". He also indirectly says that kickers are not football players. While it is true that kickers are not as physically involved as other players, the do make significant contributions to their team. Also, kickers aren't often given as much credit as they deserve on television, in magaazines, and on the web, with the exception of Adam Vinatieri.
Schlereth also says that kickers shouldn't be or try to be leaders on their teams. Why not, Mark Schlereth? What does leadership have to do with physical size or strength?
I'm not saying that kicker is the most important position. But they contribute to their team's record and can even win games on occasion.
As a tribute to the kickers of the NFL, my next Featured Player will be a kicker.
Sitting with the Bleacher Creatures at Yankee Stadium is an interesting experience. Let me tell you, there's a reason why alcholol isn't sold in the right field bleachers! Even with alot of people going crazy and saying things like "You ####!" or "F*** the Red Sox!" to Red Sox fans, any Yankee fan can have a good time in the right field bleachers. There's the Yankee Role Call, where fans chant the names of all the players untl they wave, and then they chant "Box Seats Suck!" Which, of course they don't, but there's still something amusing about chanting it. When I went there, one guy got up the nerve to be rude to a policeman! needless to say, he was ejected instantly. I would reccomend the experience to any Yankees fan.
