Kyle Busch Slays the Monster
Jun 01, 2008 | 5:54PM | report this

For the 3rd time in five races, and the 4th time in Sprint Cup Series competition this year, Kyle Busch emerged from his car victorious, with his Toyota parked in victory lane, as Busch led 158 laps en-route to his run away victory over Carl Edwards.

"It was definitely a great race for us there," Busch said. "We didn't have the car to beat today."

"I think Kyle's being modest," Edwards said. "I think that last run, his car was the best car."

Busch earned his 10th victory among Nascar's top three series, as he outran the Roush cars of Edwards, Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth, who finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th. However, Edwards wasn't fascinated with the way his day ended.

"No good," said Edwards, who won the race here in September. "Not what we came here to do."

On lap 18 nearly half of the top-12 in points found themselves involved in a 10-car pileup that started when David Gilliland and Elliott Sadler made contact coming off turn 2, sending Sadler spinning in front of the field. From there Tony Stewart, Clint Bowyer, Kevin Harvick, Kasey Kahne, Denny Hamlin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. all piled in to the wreckage, along with others.

Kahne's wreck, who won the Coca-Cola 600 just a week earlier, allowed David Ragan to pull within 8 points of the chase after the halfway point of Nascar's regular season. Matt Kenseth also pulled within 95 points, and after his slow start is in position to make a run at the chase.

And for Stewart, it was the third straight race in which he finished 18th or worse, and the 4th in the last five races.

"Unfortunately, adversity is our motto here at Joe Gibbs Racing," Stewart said after his wreck.

However, his teammate has only faced the adversity of the fans that hate to see him win, which he has done on several of Nascar's toughest tracks. And recently if Busch hasn't been celebrating a win, he's been close, finishing 3rd or better in each of the past five races.

"I just want to win everything, man," Busch said. "That's all I'm here for. I've found something that's worked for me recently."

Greg Biffle earned his second consecutive top-3 finish as he came home third after dominating the first half of the race, leading 164 laps, the most of any driver. The Biff did this despite electrical issues that forced him to cut off all unnecessary devices within the car, including those that cool the driver during the race. However, Biffle still made a charge for the win, but fell well behind Busch and Edwards as the laps wound down.

"In the end, he got his car right and was able to drive off," Biffle said.

Power Rankings: Dover
May 28, 2008 | 8:38AM | report this

After the long race of attrition at Lowe's, the Sprint Cup Series heads to Dover, known as the "Monster Mile." And rightly so, getting into trouble is easy at this track when you climb out of the corners and onto the straitaway, giving the car a loose sensation that even the pros can't handle sometimes. The driver who can not only keep his car out front but also out of trouble will be the one who wins on Sunday.

1. Kyle Busch

Electrical problems can't hold Kyle Busch down. Busch came from the rear of the field and worked his way up late to finish 3rd, a solid finish for the point leader. Busch has enjoyed success at Dover, with four top-10's in six starts.

2. Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Earnhardt Jr. was a contender for the win before his tire blew while leading, and the damage hindered his speed, leaving him with a 15th-place car at best. However, Tony Eury Jr. used pit strategy to put Earnhardt into the top-5 by the end of the race. Jr. has found victory lane at Dover once back in 2001.

3. Greg Biffle

He was the bridesmaid in both the All-Star Race and the Coca-Cola 600 to Kasey Kahne, but Biffle isn't complaining. After the 43rd place finish at Darlington this is exactly what Biffle's crew needed for a rebound, and they have renewed confidence heading to Dover, where Biffle won in 2005.

4. Carl Edwards

Edwards was surprisingly a non-contender for the Coca-Cola 600. He used pit strategy like Earnhardt, and despite running out of fuel on the last lap, he was able to steal a 9th place finish. Expect another top-10 at Dover, where Edwards has an average finish of 9.1, including a win here last year.

5. Jeff Burton

Burton ran well all night long, running in the top-10 before finishing a solid 6th. Burton could struggle at Dover, where he has an average finish of 16.9, though he finished 12th and 7th in the two races in the COT there last year.

6. Kasey Kahne

Kahne not only won the All-Star Race, but went on to win the Coca-Cola 600, his first win since the fall of 2006. However he's struggled in his career at Dover, where he only has one top-10 in eight starts.

7. Tony Stewart

Stewart was within just a few miles of his first Coca-Cola 600 win when he fell victim to a flat-tire, relinquishing the lead to Kahne before finishing 18th. He should be a factor to win at Dover as well, where among twelve top-10's he has two wins in 18 starts.

8. Clint Bowyer

Bowyer was never a contender from the time they unloaded the cars on Thursday. At the end of the 600-mile event, Bowyer was 25th, two laps down. However, Dover should be better for Bowyer, where he has two 8th place finishes in four starts, with a worst finish of 17th.

9. Jeff Gordon

Gordon also played the fuel-mileage game, staying out with Edwards and teammate Earnhardt to finish 4th. The finish was the third top-10 in a row for Gordon, padding his position in the top-12 in points. Gordon finished 9th and 11th at Dover last year, though he was off the lead lap in the fall race.

10. Matt Kenseth

Kenseth finished 7th in the 600, his second consecutive top-10. The finish allowed Kenseth to climb from 20th to 16th in points, now 190 points out of 12th with 14 races left. Kenseth's team seems to be back on track, and this newly found consistency should continue at Dover, where Kenseth has ten top-10's in 18 starts.

Other Notables:

11. David Reutimann- He earned his best career finish, running in the top-10 most of the night before finishing 10th, a career best.

12. Jimmie Johnson- He suffered from a blown engine just after the 500-mile point of the race, but should recover at Dover, where he has three wins.

13. Denny Hamlin- Hamlin was never a contender and finished 24th, his second finish of 24th in the past three races. Hamlin needs to turn things around quick, and a good run at Dover would be a perfect place to do it, where he has three finishes of 11th or better in four starts.

14. Bobby Labonte- Labonte finished 11th in the 600, and should be announcing whether or not he is returning to Petty Enterprises next year within the next few weeks. He also has an average finish of 16th at Dover.

15. Sam Hornish Jr.- Hornish almost made his way back into the top-35 with a career best 13th place finish. Hornish seems to have found the way to wrestle these 3400 lb cars around the track, and Dover will be a true test to his ability.
