Hamlin Finally Finds Victory in Virginia

Denny Hamlin has come so close to winning many races in the past couple of years, only to be thwarted by incidents out of control, including two weeks ago at Bristol when he was leading during a green-white-checkered restart when a fuel pick-up issue left him with a disappointing 6th place finish.

However, Hamlin found himself in a victory lane he's been seeking since he started his Cup series career, the one in Martinsville, a track located in his home state of Virginia.

"First Virginia win for me," Hamlin said. "Finally. The curse is over, I think. I hope. We've had such bad luck over these first few weeks."

Hamlin earned the victory by rebounding from an early mis-communication when he came down pit road virtually by himself and fell back in the running order. After making his way back into the top-5, he got the track position he needed by taking fuel only on his final pit stop.

That put him behind just Jeff Burton, Brian Vickers and Carl Edwards, who all had chose not to stop. Hamlin cut underneath each to catapult into the lead, and held off a final charge from Jeff Gordon, who was recovering from an early race accident, to claim his first victory of the year and fourth of his career.

"It finally feels good to come here and get a win," said Hamlin, a native of Chesterfield, Virginia. "Can't wait, man. This is a sign of things to come, I believe."

As expected, Hendrick Motorsports was the team to beat at Martinsville, as Gordon won the pole and the team led a combined 371 of the 500 laps run on the .526 mile track. However it was Hamlin who led the final 74 laps. It was still a good day for the organization that hasn't had much going for it this season, as it had all four cars in the top-10, with Gordon 2nd, Jimmie Johnson 4th, Dale Earnhardt Jr. 6th and Casey Mears 7th.

Denny Hamlin beat Hendrick Motorsports at Martinsville, something that hasn't happened in quite a while.

Burton followed his Bristol win with a 3rd place finish, but after the race was upset with the driving of rookie Michael McDowell, who was making his first career start.

"We had one driver that I thought was real inconsiderate," Burton said of McDowell, who Burton thought could have done a better job of getting out of the leader cars' way in the final laps. "He better learn some manners or he's going to get tossed."

Burton will leave Martinsville the point leader after Kyle Busch suffered from rear-gear troubles that put him several laps down and left him with a 38th place finish, falling to 5th in points.

Michael Waltrip finished 35th in the race that took place just a few days after Jack Roush, co-owner of Roush/Fenway Racing, accused Waltrip's team of stealing a sway bar from a Roush team at Dover last fall.

"We wound up with a swaybar there somehow," Waltrip said. "I promise you no one went to their tool box and swiped it. This is not intellectual espionage."

"I found out about it and I wanted to go supersonic," Roush said. "[I said,] 'We're going up there. We're going to get a search warrant. We're going to get the bar. It's intellectual espionage that's going on here. They've stolen the part. They've got access to it. They've had an opportunity to see what it does, see what its efficiency for weight and function are, and we've been damaged. We've been harmed by this theft.'"

Many drivers, such as Jeff Gordon, merely laughed and joked about Roush's accusation, but one driver did support the owner, and it was Gordon's teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr.

"Another team walked over to their pit box and stole something off of it?" Earnhardt Jr. said. "That really happened? Wow. If that happened, whoever did it ought not to have a hard card (to access the garage area) anymore, hands down....No second chances there."

A missing sway bar? Actually a round tube sometimes hollow or solid used to reinforce the suspension travel and control the sway of the cars in the cornering activity. Nothing secretive or high tech at all.

You would think it was a top secret encryption device to decode the other teams engine designs. #### Boy. The cat in the hat has flipped his hat.

As far as the race it was a good one with several lead changes. I do think HMS cars are ready to dominate the races again though

photogr- I agree, Jack is making too big a deal out of nothing.

However, I'm not so sure that HMS is ready to dominate at tracks like Texas and Dover, but I think they will continue to thrive at Talladega and short tracks like they did last year, but we'll see.

Nice work Tyler!

My man Biffle did the shuffle and ended up back in the pack... Think he finished around 21st. Oh well...

Fun race with a lot of bumpin' and grindin'... Kinda sounded like Kyle Busch was his own worst enemy on Martinsville's short virtually flat track. Wheel hopping with his foot on the throttle coming out of a turn chewed up his rear gears... Toyota gears???

Roush appears to be making a mountain out of a molehill and I think it goes back to the comments made when they found Edward's car with a part missing that led to increased downward pressure. Toyota's President said it lookded intentional, now this...

Thanks for the read Tyler!

Dwindy:

Yep. The gears are the weakest link with Toyotas if they were using Genuine Toyota rear ends. ( I think NASCAR mandates the teams use their rear ends though).

Used to race a Supra years ago and were constantly breaking gears. According to SCCA rules and class, I could not switch to an after market rear end. Switched cars after that.

Thanks Dwindy1, I think the Biff will do much better at Texas, and as far as the Roush/Toyota thing, I think it's more personal than anything else.

Great post on the Martinsville race. Nice to see Hamlin in victory lane again too.

I was a bit surprised about Jeff Burton's outspokeness in his post race interview about the rookie. Not sure if it's better to let McDowell know his feelings on the side, or on TV as he did his interview.

Tyler good post as always. About Burtons reaction. He was real easy on the rookie. Had that been Smoke he would have dumped him. Jeff new it was his first race. I hope McDowell sees with 20 to go and a lap down get out of the way. Now I could have understood with 200 to go. Oh well he is a rookie and that is why Jeff Burton was a vetran about it.

Nice work Tyler. It was nice to see Denny finally get a win in his home state. Now if he can just conquer his home track of Richmond.

As far as Jack Roush, he needs to get over it. The sway bar was not messed with. The only thing that was taken off it was some paint. The serial number, and all the mechanical parts were still in tack. So I would assume that if MWR was really trying to "steal" it they would had kept under better security. And they would had tampered with it.

Hanahan- thanks for reading, and we'll see. =)

Gerrel- I think that Burton could have won that race with some cooperation from lapped traffic, and that may have influenced his post-race comments, though McDowell will need to learn that in that situation you need to get out of the way or you'll get moved, like when Carl was behind him.

noahspop2001- Burton could have put his bumper to him, but Burton wouldn't do that to someone in their first race, as much as he might be tempted, lol.

Tsfanpc- I would love to know what was so special about that sway bar... maybe Roush knows something everybody else doesn't?
