Who are These Guys?
Nov 04, 2007 | 5:09PM | report this

This week the Lions CRUSHED the Denver Broncos to the tune of 44-7 before a sold out crowd at Ford Field. It is, without a doubt, the very best I've seen the Lions play in the last 7 years. I'm not trying to over state it or embelish it in any way, it's the best game I've seen them play since I started covering them 7 seasons ago, bar none.

Special teams were turly special when you consider Jason Hanson became just the 11th player in NFL history to surpass the 1,600 point plateau with 14 total points on the day. He gave the team a lift all day long while lifting himself in record books.

The offense did it on the ground, through the air, and were turnover free.

The defense was sublime. They sacked, they scored, they served notice...they are not the same old Lions!

No, these are not the same old Lions. These guys, it's strange to say, are fun to watch. They're on a roll and they believe in themselves and now they're 6-2. At 6-2 at this point in the season it's fair to say if the Detroit Lions don't make the playoffs in the weak NFC, it would be huge disappointment. It would take a collapse of monumental proportions for them to fail in that regard at this point.

Yes we're talking playoffs.  Here in Detroit we're talking playoffs... 4-0 at home, 6-2 on the season, 2nd in NFC North with 8 games to play...you've gotta like their chances. Wow, we're mentioning the Lions and the playoffs in the same sentence in 2007 - what's the world coming to?

I don't think the Packers and the Lions have played yet. I don't follow either team but as division mates they have to play each other twice. The Pack are the only real threat to the Lions playoff chances.

Three NFC North teams played this week.
Three NFC North teams won and beat up on the weak AFC. Isn't the AFC supposed to be the best?

OSL, you have that backwards.
Detroit is the only threat to Green Bay.

My bad Husker. I just meant that since the Pack is in first place, they are who Detroit needs to beat to ensure a playoff spot.

I believe that the Lions are succeeding despite Matt Millen. And it all goes back to Jon Kitna. He's showing the leadership ability that Detroit's been missing. They will win 10 games, as Kitna said, but they won't make it far into the playoffs...the Kitna effect can only counteract the Millen effect for so long.

Good NEWS!!! I'm happy for the Lions!! Watching the Lion Lineman lumber down the field with the turnover and stiff arming that little guy, was absolutely hilarious! Detroit has been in the depths of despair for a long time and it's nice to see the Fans have something to CHEER! about. Trevor, After reading your Article, it was almost like you thought it was an Illusion. LOL

Im happy for the Lions all the years of bad seasons and terrible decisions has finally passed and their playing like a playoff team. However you have to look at their remainign schedule and its not an easy one. They got the Giants at home, then the Pack and Dallas. So even though they had a great first half the second half of the season will be the true test to whether or not this all is reality or the Lions playing poor teams

Growing up a life-long Lions fan, this year so far has given me hope that they will continue to improve. The one thing that still bothers me is that they have no credible back-up to Kitna. If he goes down then I think they will not be able to climb the ladder to becoming an elite team? Other than that I still hope they continue to play aggressive and show the NFL we are no longer the doormats we have beeen for so long.GO LIONS make us all proud to be a fan!

Hello folks, first time poster here. What amazes me is the the Defense was supposed to be the weakness of this team and to be honest, at least at this point, I'd consider them the strength.

I have been a huge Packers fan for years and its been a long long long time since the Lions have been a threat. Well this year they are and I am looking forward to what looks like it will be a great Thanksgiving day game. If they keep playing as well as they are as I know the Packers will then the last game of the year may decide a lot for the Playoffs.

I think Detroit's story is great. I think it would be nice to see Detroit in the mix; however, Detroit has played three average teams and five bad teams. The only average team they beat was Tampa Bay, who outplayed them but made too many mistakes. Philly (who just lost at home to Dallas by 21 and it could have been a lot worse) and Washington (destroyed last week by New England) whipped Detroit badly. So, while I would like to see Detroit winning I have strong reservations about their being a "good" team, above average maybe, but not good at this point. Let's see what happens when they start playing better competition before we announce their playoff status.

One last comment, unless Washington and New York (wild card entries) really falter, the only way Detroit will get into the playoffs is by winning the North which means they have to beat Green Bay!

I am a life-long Lions fan. No team has suffered a worse win-loss record in the past decade, so I'm ecstatic to be 6-2. HOWEVER, the Lions secondary is still pretty suspect.
QB's we've faced and beaten: McCown (back-up), Griese (twice), Tavaris Jackson (rookie), Garcia, Cutler (rookie) and Ramsey. There isn't a solid starter among them. Our secondary made McNabb look like Brady, and Jason Campbell look like Manning in our 2 losses. Philly torched us for 8 touchdowns, 4 through the air, and Campbell completed 80 percent of his passes!
I'm loving being 6-2, but looking at the QB's we'll face in the second half of the season, I think we'll be lucky to go 9-7. However, that would still TRIPLE last years win total! That's a move in the right direction. But let's forget this nonsense about Playoffs. We'll be really lucky to make it past the Wild Card round, if we even make it that far. All that being said, Go LIONS!

Hey LionsFan2050, what type of fan are you to say maybe 9-7? They will definately do better than that. We'll have at least 4 Pro Bowlers, and I think we will go past the First Round of the playoffs.

The playoffs would be great after so many dismal seasons. Even if they don't make the playoffs, it has sure been a FUN season so far. They (the Lions) have a least given us a glimmer of what a contender should look like, something we haven't seen in a pro football team in this town since I was born (1956). Do they have a ways to go, yes, have they played any great teams so far, no, but you have to say that they are at least on the right track. We will see what the second half brings us. If they keep believing in themselves, which I think they do, they have at least a shot at 10 and 6 this year. It might not be enough though if the Pack keeps winning. Looking forward to a great Thanksgiving day game, just hoping we are eating the turkey in my house and not watching them on TV. GO LIONS!!!!

Whats up Trev

Man what kind of fans are you people? Surely not fans of my beloved Detroit Lions, I know that the Lions have been disappointing for so long its hard to be optimistic, but my God. They are 6-2...That is 4 games over .500 and all I hear is negativity, sure they got smoked by Philly and Washington but they have rebounded quite well and their defense has much improved, they have given up 14 points in the past two games!! They just crushed Denver 44 to 7. Talk about ungrateful, the Lions haven't had this much success since Barry was still playing...!!!

Kitna did say that they're capable of winning 10 games. And halfway through the season they now stand at 6-2 and well within shot of that target. But who knew that the Broncos would be so woeful and inept ?

You can question my fanhood if you want to, but I watch the Lions every Sunday, every year, no matter how overmatched they are or how pitiful they become. I was there when Barry Sanders broke 2000 yards. I was there when Mel Gray ran back a kickoff for a touchdown in Mike Singletary's last game, back when someone didn't do it every other game in the NFL.
Every year, I think "this may be the year." So yeah, I'm happy they're winning, but I'm not ready to anoint them yet. As far as them being ranked 5th in some power rankings: LOL, you must be kidding. If they do better than 9-7, I'll be happily eating humble pie. Until they do I'm not ready to crown them. We'll see at the end of the season who's saying "they are who we thought they were!" Maybe not the same old Lions, but still not a Superbowl contender, either.

Since that 6-2 record, the Lions have lost five straight, now. They haven't sacked anyone above all in that streak or taken the ball away during that time, either. I think Millen has finally had his last chance, although I'm not really urging like other Lions fan were last year. (just wrong) They don't even lead in the NFC Wild Card anymore; the pesky Vikings do now.
