As unfortunate as the death of Redskins' player Sean Taylor is it's saddening to see that his death is used as for political as well as social gristle. And whatever the journalist Jason Whitlock may have to say on the matter in no way does it address the real issues besides one of the great social ills that this country faces.
It's not as if crimes that've committed inside a race is anything new. It's being going on within the country for years. And to place it all on the genre of hip hop culture is insane ! One would think that there have not been more heinous crimes committed that haven't been attributed to other genre's, be it artistic or otherwise. And this situation is not only endemic to the African American population. It may well be heightened by the fact that many are using this in some form for political gain or otherwise.
Long before the term hip-hop culture was brought within our midst there was black on black crime. So for Whitlock to be jumping all over this and assuaging us as if it were anything new does nothing to allude what the real underlying problems here are. If anything it's one of disrespect and disdain for human life and nothing else. Instead of it being about what's said by about a rap artist as a way of expressing themselves .
There have been those who've alluded to the fact that this may well have been payback for Taylor doing someone wrong. And by his original actions vengeance was sought and his death was seen as equitable for whatever act he committed. That if anything is pure speculation that has been put out there.
If the rap culture of today is behind the murder of Sean Taylor then can someone explain to me then what it was that was behind the heinous acts committed by Charles Manson and his followers ? That too was it not a crime just as vile as the one committed against Taylor ? The fact of the matter being here was that Sharon Tate and the other victims were slain also within a house in the Hollywood Hills. And it was known that Manson himself would religiously listen to various forms of music from rock & roll to neverending chants of Indian music whilst drugged out on various opiates.
The real problem here is that we're obfuscating the real responsibility and using a genre or underground sub-culture to use as a crutch to allude to something we chose not to explain with any great emphasis. Taylor was a victim of a heinous crime and we're seeking to psycho analyze the reasons behind it rather than seeing it for what it is. And unfortunately it'll be used as just another statistic to parade infront of the masses to state how violent the African American race can be amongst its own kind. If the assailant or assailants behind the crime happen to be African American then so be it.
The issue that has to be dealt with is how we go about punishing those who commit these crimes and how best to avoid these instances where it beomes prevalant within our society. It's all well and good to opine on what one perceives is something of genuine concern to all. But when at the end of the day you've got nothing new to say on the subject it doesn't change a thing one iota. If the discussion on the topic is to be constructive then let it be done in such a way where it deals with the matter not from a point of view where it only alludes to one race of society but to all of it. Because murder isn't just an issue of race as it knows no color ! It's an issue of people going out and taking another's life with such disdain that the perpetrator of the act feels impowered over that victim. That's something that Whitlock and others have failed to realize and address . And only seek make light of that matter in order to fullfil whatever social calling they have on the topic at the time. It's a view that mightn't be shared by many but it happens to be true.
