I See Your First Round Draft Pick And Raise You Two First Rounders And A Free Agent !
Jan 31, 2008 | 11:30AM | report this

It  seems   at  this   juncture  that   Cowboys'  owner   Jerry  Jones   is   so   enamoured   with  Arkansas'   running   back   Darren  McFadden   that  he's  prepared to  offer  soon  to   be   free  agent   running   back    Marion  Barber  for the   prized    asset  ,  McFadden.    While   there's    no  denying    that   the  running   back  is   a  great  talent.   It's   got to  be  said    that   at  this   juncture    what    we've  seen   from   McFadden  though   great    can't  allude  to greatness   in   the  NFL.

IRVING, TX - JANUARY 13: Runningback Marion Barber #24 of the Dallas Cowboys rushes the ball against the New York Giants during the third quarter of the NFC Divisional Playoff game at Texas Stadium on January 13, 2008 in Irving, Texas. With  the  Miami  Dolphins   having  the   first    pick    in the   upcoming   draft  and  Bill Parcells'   wish   to   rebuild  the   franchise   through    the  draft  and   free  agency.   It's   being  mentioned   that   Jones   is   intent   on  getting   a  deal  as soon  as   possible.   Barber   a  proven   talent    and   Pro  Bowler     would   give    the  Dolphins    legitimacy  as   a  running    team  with    him   there   to   complement  the   talents   of   Ronnie   Brown.    But      knowing   Jones  penchant  for  his  alma  mater   and   everything  that's   said  to   come   out  of Arkansas.  One   has  to   wonder   if     his   gamble   is    worth  it  ?      This   isn't   Herschel   Walker   you're    intent  on  trading   and  what   you're   getting  in  return   is  merely  based    on   potential.         And   potential  as deemed   by  what  it's   meant   to   represent   in   this   day    and   age   doesn't   always   equate   to   what  one   ends   up    desiring.

For    Jones    this   seems   to  be   a  gamble   that  he's  prepared  to  make and  for   Parcells.  He   may well  appear     only  too  willing    to   acquiesce  to  his    former   boss's   wishes.    For   Parcells    and   the  Dolphins    in   getting   Barber   it'd   appear   to  be  a  no   brainer.   And   added  to  the   fact  that   they   can   move  down  in   the  draft   and    supplement   their    roster     with  a   feastful    of  picks     would   seem   to   put  them   in  a  far   better   position   than  they  could  have    ever    envisioned.

And  whilst   it  can  be  said    Jones'  desire   is  to  bring  his    team  back  to  the   summit  of  the  NFL.    A   position    now  occupied    by    the  New  England Patriots.    His   willingness  to   do    things   that   he   believes   to    right  for  the  franchise   even  if  it    may  not  be   what's   desired   by   his  coaching   staff  doesn't  appear  to    faze   Jones.   As   owner   he    has  the   final  say    in  all   roster   moves.    The   acquisition   of    Barber    whilst   great    for    fans     doesn't  seem   expedient   financially   or  wise .    It  can   be   said that  the  franchise's  needs    go   way  beyond  the   need   of   a   running   back.    They've   needs     in  other   areas   that   certainly   need  to  be  addressed.    McFadden  as the  presumed  number  one  pick    in  the  upcoming   draft   will   no  doubt   desire   a  considerable    financial  package.   And    judging   by the    going    sums  that've   been   paid   out   for    prized   first   rounders.   It'd  be  fair    to  say   that   a  sum   upwarsds  of    $40m  to  $50m  won't  be   out  of the  question  when   it  comes   his  signing.     A  signing     bonus    in  excess of   $30m   doesn't  seem  to  be   out  of  the   question .   Barber     could well    be  signed    for   far   less  and   he's  a   proven   commodity.      But his  present   status    comes   into   question    as  it  does  seem  that  Jones'  desires   lay  elsewhere  and  Barber  isn't a  part  of it.

Cowboys'   head   coach    Wade   Phillips .  picture   courtesy  of   dallascowboys.com/nfl/wadephillips  .............

In Jerry's   world   everything    is   secondary     and   his   wishes  are that  of  a team  that's     a   winning   one   and    the   prized    asset    is an  NFL  championship.   He's    prepared  to   move   heaven   and   earth  to  achieve   that   even  if  it  means  that  he's    being   questioned  as to  his   asuteness   when   it   comes  to      player   personnel   decisions.     It   appears   that  on the  surface  his    coaching    staff   aren't   prepared    to   question   him  at  this    juncture.    Wade Phillips  and   his   head   assistant    Jason  Garrett     no   doubt   value    Jones'   judgement.   But   who's    actually   running   this    team  ?  Jones'  meddlesome  ways     seems    to    have    unnerving  nature   for  many    who've    worked   for  him.   And   the   list  of  coaches   in  Dallas     over  the   last   decade    seems   to  bare    this    out.

IRVING, TX - JANUARY 13: Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett of the Dallas Cowboys walks on the field during warm ups to the NFC Divisional Playoff game against the New York Giants at Texas Stadium on January 13, 2008 in Irving, Texas.  Jones'    wish    is  to  place  his    franchise    at the   pinnacle  of success  and  it  means   dethroning    the   ever  present   New  England  Patriots.   What  Jerry    seems   not  to  be  acknowledging  is  that   from   within  the  Patriots  are  a   well   ran    organization  and   there    coaches  and   hierarchy   work    together .  Here    in  Jerry's    world   it  appears that  a  dictatorship   is at  work  and  it's no  different   than  that    of   a   third   world    dictatorship.         What  he  says    goes  and    no     one   questions   his    authority     even    when   he's   wrong.    In  doing  so   one  tends    to    suffer   the   consequences   of   questioning  his   authority.   You're   shown  the   door   in   a   none   to  welcoming  way.

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens watches the scoreboard in the final moments of the Cowboys' 21-17 loss to the New York Giants in an NFC divisional playoff football game, in this Jan. 13, 2008 file photo, in Irving, Texas. Owens should set aside part of his roster bonus from Dallas to pay his old team a debt. An arbitrator ruled in favor of the Philadelphia Eagles last Friday on a grievance that was filed by the NFL players' union on Owens' behalf in 2005, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008. citing a league source.     Cowboys' wide    receiver   looks  up  at  the  scoreboard   reflecting   on perhaps  what  might've  been    after  the   loss   to  the  New  York  Giants.     picture  courtesy  of   ap/photo/Donna  McWilliams  .............

For   the  Cowboys  this    season  has  been  an  unfulfilling   and  I'd   dare  say   that   come   draft   day   it   could    well  be  another   one  of   missed   opportunities  ?
