You know there's something wrong when a former player is caught in the cross hairs of an owner's rant as to his team's malaise. It can't have been missed by anyone who's noticed the itinerant rantings of Timberwolves' owner Glen Taylor and much to the chagrin of others over how he felt that the franchise was let down by Kevin Garnett.

Less I'm mistaken Taylor and GM Kevin McHale all but lost all of the goodwill the franchise built up within the Minneapolis area when they agreed to trade the much beloved star to the Boston Celtics. And though this young team is struggling to determine a path for itself within the league. I find it somewhat infantile for Taylor to be now criticizing the player. Was the time that Garnett spent there in Minnesota not profitable for all concerned ? OK so you didn't so you didn't fulfill your goal of winning an NBA championship. But it wasn't for the lack of trying on Garnett's path during his tenureship there with the T'wolves.

It can be said that though the team has faltered it was of their own making as to the lamentable position that they now find themselves in. As for McHale we've not heard a response from him as to his owner's childlike rant. For Taylor to suggest tht Garnett tanked the season by sitting out 5 games because of an injury is asinine and not deserving of a reply from the player , himself. I suspect that Taylor has forgotten that the roster surrounding the player wasn't all that impressive to begin with. But then that's what you get in a hiree of McHale's supposed pedigree. His assessment of NBA talent is broderline suspect at best and only marginally worse than that of his counterpart in New York. Though we knew off the bat the New York Knicks were going to be terrible this season anyway. As to how bad I don't believe that anyone believed that they'd be this lamentable.

In all honesty though whatever gave anyone the idea that Isaiah Thomas was ever any good as a coach let alone a great assessor of NBA personnel ? Much of the same can be said of McHale himself as he was skirting under the radar of not having to operate in major market in the NBA. The veracity of Taylor's argument is about palpable and palatable as asking someone to take a swift knee to the groin. For the reciever it'll be painful and for the aggressor of the action it only goes to show how infantile they are.

The Twolves' record in the Northwest Division stand at an abysmal 17-50 some 27.5 games behind the Utah Jazz. Only the morbidly moribund Seattle Supersonics has a worse record within the division. But when you're witnessing the play within the division you've only got to appreciate how bad things have become for the likes of the T'wolves and Sonics.

About the only thing that the team has in its favor as of now is that it's youth based and laden with a varying degree of talent. And at the core of its element are Al Jefferson the leading scorer on the team, Randy Foye, Rashard McCants and Corey Brewer. Whether or not coach Randy Wittman can steer this team in the right direction is open to question.
As for McHale he's sitting atop of this curent mess and on appearance his position would seem safe for now. But only Glen Taylor seems to think that much of the franchise's problems seem to stem from what he believes was Garnett's sitting out the final 5 games of the season. Pity that he and McHale didn't think about surrounding Garnett with the talent required to make the team a real contender.
I was thinking that it's not only appropriate that the Knicks and MSG sought to settle out of court with Anucha Browne Saunders. But the right thing to do for all the parties involved in the case. As it is it's made the Knicks the laughing stock of the NBA. But what has been even more intolerable has been the apparent non action of Commissioner David Stern. Had this been a player found guilty of the offense of sexual harrassment he'd have been more likely than not suspended by the league and quite possibly asked to seek counseling.

As for the ensuing war of words that've surrounded the case Thomas and those within the MSG corporation still plead their innocence as to what went on between Thomas and the employee who at the time held an executive position within the Knicks' organization. MSG as the parent company of the Knicks was sued in Federal Court by Browne Saunders for sexual harrassment and duely won her case there. One might think that this is karma that's seen to reach out and grab the Knicks and placed them now on the road to mediocrity by way of their play thus far in this season.

What we've seen from the Knicks this season has been nothing short of mediocre at best and perhaps only rivalled by that of the Miami Dolphins within the NFL who remain winless at 0-13 within the league. At 6-14 the Knicks are faring only marginally better. Their double digit loss to the Celtics by over thirty plus points was as much an embarrassment to the Knicks as it was for the Celtics. At no time did the Knicks even appear to be competitive in that game. And it what is now even becoming more apparent to all those with a knowledge of the game is that the Knicks are an undisciplines and badly coached team. All this is happening under the au####es of coach and GM Isaiah Thomas. Who's wherewithall for the game lies somewhere between what he learned as a player and what he seems to have not learnt as a coach.

But it'd be wrong just to use the this case as one of the main problems that has led to this malaise for the Knicks. It stems also from the ineptitude of the Dolan family. Who as owners of the franchise have let things completely careen out of control . It's akin to watching a sinking vessel or a runaway train speeding out of control down a track with a collapsed bridge ahead beckoning a known disaster. They all seem to be either oblivious to this or just feel that something will happen to right the oncoming disaster. Much as in the same way Thomas and owner James Dolan were unwilling to accept the verdict of the jury when it was announced that the organization had been found guilty.

With the ensuing problems of the franchise seemingly stumbling from one problem to the next. It's seems hard to foresee how they'll extricate themselves from many of these self inflicted wounds. The players aren't playing well and their confidence is shot. There's no leadership coming from any of the veterans on this team and Thomas himself is clearly lacking in communicative skills when it comes to dealing with the team in general. If nothing else the respect that the players should have the coach just doesn't seem to be there. And for the young players on this roster they just don't seem to by improving by any great measure. Woefully inept in all facets of the game as they are the fans too must be thinking that there has to be a change if they're gain any amount of respectability. Albeit that they'll end up with losing record for the sixth consectuive season. It tends not to bode well for the NBA's most valuable franchise in terms of value.

Not only have they become an embarrassment to themselves but also the the NBA as a whole. Those who'd tell you otherwise are either mindful of appearances or members of Alcoholics Anonymous. This team is as abysmal in appearance as it is in its play. Much has been made that ownership and management have been irresponsible when it comes to custodial operation of the franchise. But can't be questioned is what must also be going through the minds of the hierarchy of the NBA as the franchise sinks to even lower depths of futility. It would be fine to think that there's some light at the end of this tunnel . But with the way that the Knicks have not only handle this debacle and the team's oncourt performances. It's certainly hard to envisage them being able to turn things around this season.

The Knicks' roster really has nothing of merit that any team would find worthy of trading for and one sincerely doubts that a player would be willing to go and play for the Knicks at this juncture. Especially with Isaiah Thomas being in charge of the team by way not only coaching but also making player personnel decisions. So far his touch has been nothing that of King Midas when it come to choosing talent. And no matter how enamoured we are with many of the players. In all honesty would you really want any of them on your team ?

Teams that normally sink to this level of mediocrity normally take time to adjust and make the necessary changes. But one knows that with the Knicks the changes will have to start at the upper echelons of the francshise and then work down. With Thomas and Dolan at the helm of the franchise one can only see that the futility will be prolonged . Much like when you have an aching tooth and afraid to have it pulled for the fear of the pain that one'll inflict upon themselves. That's something that the Knicks' fans will have to endure for the foreseeable future as to will all of the genuine and appreciative fans of the NBA. But for how long you may well ask ? And that my friends will be open to debate or at some juncture when the Knicks themselves decide to say "enough is enough".

For that to come about James Dolan will have to be removed from his seat as Chief Executive of the New York Knicks and the day to day running of the team be left with someone who has the team's best interests at heart. And most certainly at present there seems to be no one within the organization that has the temerity or intestinal fortitude to do that. And with Thomas having signed an extension to his contract earlier this season. It certainly will be hard to remove him also. But what else can they do ? These two are seemingly driving this franchise into the ground with as much sense and clarity as a man jumping out of a plane without a parachute thinking that he'll live. You know no good will come of it and the outcome will be tragic.
Let me know what your opinions are as to the Knicks' malaise and apparent mediocrity. It'll be fun to discuss them at length !
