Rack 'em , Stack 'em And Watch 'em ............What've We Learnt In The End ?
Feb 25, 2008 | 12:36PM | report this

Well   the   NFL   combine   came  and   went    in   four   days.  And   there    at    the  RCA  Dome  in  Indianapolis   many  of  the   top   college    talent    were    out   through  the  paces    by     NFL   scouts  and  coaches    with  GM's  watching   along  with    a  cadre   of  press     reporting   their     every   move.  Say    nothing   of   which    many  of    agents    were   hyping     up   their    clients.

Chris Long of the University of Virginia ..

University  of  Virginia   defensive   player  seen   here  alongside  his  Hall  of Fame     father   Howi  Long.   picture   courtesy of  images/google search/  google.com/uva/longchris ............

There'll    obviously   be  a  number     players   that'll   have    done   well    for  themselves   by    moving  up   the   depth   charts   of  many  of  the     coaches  and  GM's    in    the  process.  And    there'll  be   a   number   of  players    that'll    done   some   harm   to    their   prestige   either    by    not   participating   or   in  effect   not    performing   well  enough.     That  being   said     what   do   we   really  learn   from  this    exercise   ?      A   battery   of    tests    won't   effectively   tell  us    whether      or    not  a  player'll     succeed   in  the  NFL.       Coaches  and    GM's  alike    will    no   doubt   rely   on  game    film   to   see   that   and    no    doubt     the   interviews  that   took   place   will  predicate    what    decisions    will  be  made    by   them   on   draft   day.     No    amount  of     testing    at  the   end   of  the    day     will   determine      what   we're being    told.

LSU's Glen Dorsey ............ LSU's  Glen   Dorsey   .    Commonly   believed    that  he'll    no  doubt   be  taken  as  a  top    5  pick.    picture   courtesy  of   images/google search/google.com/lsu/glendorsey  .........

And   the  press   themselves    are   out  there    telling   us   what    we     ought  to   expect  and   who's    making   a  good  showing.    It's    like   being   told   by    a  car    salesman   once    you've   stepped    into  the  showroom     that   the  car   you   desire    looks    good .   But   in   reality     until   you   get    behind  the   wheel    yourself    and   get  a  feel  for  the   vehicle    you're    not  going  to   make   that    outlay  in  purchasing  that    vehicle.      And  the  process   is   no  different   when   it  comes    to  NFL   combine.    Wonderlic  Test  and  all  that's  meant  to    suggest  ,   it's   the   interview    process   that  really   gives    the  coaches  anf   GM's  and   owners    an    insight    into  the  player's   insight and  psyche.   Offcourse    they'll    know    what   it  is  that   they   each  require   of    the  draftees   that   they're    liable   to  take     as     each   round     unfolds   on   draft   day.

The    speculation   as  to   who'll  be    taken    is    of  interest    to  everyone . And   for     the  press  and   fans   alike     it's   something    of   a  rite  of   passage  as  the  supposition  begins.     Darren  McFadden,   Chris Long,   Glen  Dorsey,  Matt Ryan  , Andre'  Woodson   or   any    number  of  others   may    well   fit    that  team's    bill.  But I'd  hazard   a  guess   that    none   of  us  really   know   who's     likelty   to  be  taken   number  one  overall.    We  all    have     our    choices  as  to   who   that   should   be.   But   in  all   honesty   would   you   be  surprised    if   the  person    you   chose   wasn't  taken    #1  ?

And  as    much   as  many   us    of     may   well   have    differing    views  on the  process and  what  it  determines  overall.    It's    allegedly   the  best    system   that   assesses   a   player's    talent  and  worth     that  the  NFL  has.  To   the  keenest   of    observers  and   all   of    the  laymen     come   draft    day.   It  can   be  said     when   we're   watching    the    process   unfold ,    we   know   doubt    think    of     ourselves  as   a  coach  or   GM     trying    to    outdo  each  of  the   other   thirty   one    teams    within   the   NFL.    There'll   be   winners   and   losers  as  the     process   unfolds.     There   may   well   be     one  or   two    draft   day   surprises   that     take   place  along     the  way   with     one  or   two   trades   that'll    evolve.      We    might   even   decry      our  team    for    making    an   idiotic      pick   or trade.     And   for the   players    taken     in   the      first    round    there'll  be   an   abundance   of      fame    , wealth  and   hopefully   success   awaiting    them   in  the  process.

Mike Hart of Michigan ........... Mike  Hart  of   Michigan picture   courtesy   of     search/googl  images/google.com/mike  hart  .......

The   lesser    lights    of  the  draft     we're    told    are    taken    in    the   lower   rounds.  But  it's    been   said    that's    where    normally   some   of  the   more   tangible    assets  that     can    be  found in  those   rounds  of   the  draft.   And   it'd     be  remiss   to  think  otherwise.    So  many   players   that've     gone  on    to   find   success    have    been    taken    in   the  lower    rounds  of  the  draft.   It's   not    meant   to  be   a  scientific    process.    If    anything    it's   more    hit   or   miss   in  many  of the  cases.   But     when  a  franchise    strikes   gold    it  can   be  said     no    one   is  more   happier    than   the  coach  or  GM.      The   fans'll    celebrate    too  as  they   may    feel  that  it  means   a  change    in  their    team's   fortunes.  And   for    a  team    that's    been   mired    in   mediocrity     the    difference    in  making  the    right   pick    may  well   mean     the     determinination  as  to   that   team's    fortunes   for   the  next     four  or   five   years  at best,    or   possibly   less.     And    thoug  there   have   been   times    where    the     pick    to   turns     out  to  be  a    bust  .  But   at  the     end   of the    day   it'll   be   about   the   more   prudent     decisions   being  made     by    the   teams   on  the  day  of  the  draft.
