Well the NFL combine came and went in four days. And there at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis many of the top college talent were out through the paces by NFL scouts and coaches with GM's watching along with a cadre of press reporting their every move. Say nothing of which many of agents were hyping up their clients.

There'll obviously be a number players that'll have done well for themselves by moving up the depth charts of many of the coaches and GM's in the process. And there'll be a number of players that'll done some harm to their prestige either by not participating or in effect not performing well enough. That being said what do we really learn from this exercise ? A battery of tests won't effectively tell us whether or not a player'll succeed in the NFL. Coaches and GM's alike will no doubt rely on game film to see that and no doubt the interviews that took place will predicate what decisions will be made by them on draft day. No amount of testing at the end of the day will determine what we're being told.
LSU's Glen Dorsey . Commonly believed that he'll no doubt be taken as a top 5 pick. picture courtesy of images/google search/google.com/lsu/glendorsey .........
And the press themselves are out there telling us what we ought to expect and who's making a good showing. It's like being told by a car salesman once you've stepped into the showroom that the car you desire looks good . But in reality until you get behind the wheel yourself and get a feel for the vehicle you're not going to make that outlay in purchasing that vehicle. And the process is no different when it comes to NFL combine. Wonderlic Test and all that's meant to suggest , it's the interview process that really gives the coaches anf GM's and owners an insight into the player's insight and psyche. Offcourse they'll know what it is that they each require of the draftees that they're liable to take as each round unfolds on draft day.
The speculation as to who'll be taken is of interest to everyone . And for the press and fans alike it's something of a rite of passage as the supposition begins. Darren McFadden, Chris Long, Glen Dorsey, Matt Ryan , Andre' Woodson or any number of others may well fit that team's bill. But I'd hazard a guess that none of us really know who's likelty to be taken number one overall. We all have our choices as to who that should be. But in all honesty would you be surprised if the person you chose wasn't taken #1 ?

And as much as many us of may well have differing views on the process and what it determines overall. It's allegedly the best system that assesses a player's talent and worth that the NFL has. To the keenest of observers and all of the laymen come draft day. It can be said when we're watching the process unfold , we know doubt think of ourselves as a coach or GM trying to outdo each of the other thirty one teams within the NFL. There'll be winners and losers as the process unfolds. There may well be one or two draft day surprises that take place along the way with one or two trades that'll evolve. We might even decry our team for making an idiotic pick or trade. And for the players taken in the first round there'll be an abundance of fame , wealth and hopefully success awaiting them in the process.

The lesser lights of the draft we're told are taken in the lower rounds. But it's been said that's where normally some of the more tangible assets that can be found in those rounds of the draft. And it'd be remiss to think otherwise. So many players that've gone on to find success have been taken in the lower rounds of the draft. It's not meant to be a scientific process. If anything it's more hit or miss in many of the cases. But when a franchise strikes gold it can be said no one is more happier than the coach or GM. The fans'll celebrate too as they may feel that it means a change in their team's fortunes. And for a team that's been mired in mediocrity the difference in making the right pick may well mean the determinination as to that team's fortunes for the next four or five years at best, or possibly less. And thoug there have been times where the pick to turns out to be a bust . But at the end of the day it'll be about the more prudent decisions being made by the teams on the day of the draft.
Well it's over and done with. The impossible dream wasn't to be . But the ride was well worth it. And even with the allegations of cheating. Therein lies the rub. When you get caught with your hands in the cookie jar. Then you're liable to be punished. Kismet , karma can be a bit*ch and when it catches up with you . You can be made to look the proverbial fool.

Belicheck for all of his demeanor , on and off the field tact laid waste to what can be deemed unnecessary act at the end of the game. Having seen his team usurped by a much more resilient band of players. It can be said that on the day the Patriots weren't equal to the task asked of them. A chance at immortality are the things that legends are made of. On Sunday they were proven to be mere mortals on and off the field.

A 17-14 loss to the New York Giants is a bitter pill to ####. But I for one commend them on a hard fought and thrilling victory. Hell if you're going to want to see the Lombardi trophy won. Then why not by a player who many had labelled a failure. Eli Manning more than proved his worth to his team leading them by example. He did everything that was asked of him and more. And even though he won the game's MVP award. Something of a travesty considering the tone was set by indominatable play of defensive player Justin Tuck. As he went so did the Giants. Every hit that he had on Tom Brady reverberrated around the stadium. Unfortunately the Patriots weren't able to reciprocate in a similar fashion. You win some you lose some !

For Giants' coach Tom Coughlan, the days of self doubt and the calls for his resignation or firing are over. He's led his team to the promised land. The Giants' fans can bask in their well deserved victory and all the accolades that go along with it. Eli now joins his elder brother Peyton as the only NFL quarterbacking brothers to have led their respective teams to a victory in the Superbowl. Another piece of history garnered by these brothers. Eli's victory was the one deemed improbable against the team that many had predetermined was the best that the NFL had ever produced. The crowning , accolade was far too premature and if anything ill advised.

You don't get the accolades and applause for finishing second not even when it's a close ran thing. The Patriots'll now be remembered as the team that stumbled at the last obstacle placed infront of it. And as painful for me as it was to watch. I'm in no way embarrassed by the team's defeat. If anything it was a lesson well learned as it's better to get the job done and if nothing at less make a serious attempt at achieving glory. The year long effort by the team though outstanding wasn't fulfilled. The expectations though achievable was beyond them. And for the fans of Miami Dolphins and their geriatric squad of former players. This may well be one more reason for them to bask in their glory. Because that's about the only thing of worth that they've now got at this juncture. Thrity six years on and their opining about that unbeaten season. Dare one say that they're not overly concerned with the franchise and the season they've just had ?

For me as an avowed Pats' fan this was something of bitter pill to #### but I'll recover from by having a few bottles of Sam Adams and perhaps a few more for good measure.
And then I've always got a Manning that I'm willing to look at. See below for details.
Well today is the day where the whole of the nation will either be watching the Superbowl with friends and family in the confines of their own home. Or they might choose to watch in a local sports bar and eatery. There'll also be others who'll choose to forego the event in order to do something else. And that is their right to do so. But this has got to be the one time of the year where the country as a whole becomes one big raucous cheerleading squad. Willing on the team they supprt to a win.

For myself and a few of my closest colleagues we thought it'd be only fitting if we were to get something together for some of our local veterans who've returned from duty in Iraq and Afghansitan. In this case it would be to invite them to a local eatery along with their families to watch the game live. The response has been overwhelming. And the positive feedback we got from the venue in question was more than we could've bargained for. They be laying on much of the food and drinks for the men and women in question 'free of charge' . To say that my buddies and I are surprised is an understatement. But when put into context as to what it is we're doing is simply leads to me to believe that that when it comes to showing our appreciation for the men and women of the armed forces. As a nation its citizens are second to none. That being said the same can't be said of the adminsitration.

Some of those guests in attendance will be men and women who've returned from seeing action in both regions where they've faced an undaunted enemy. Well these returning vets are to my mind real bonafide heroes. There'll be some who've returned home with some serious injuries not just physical but mental one's too. Ones that can't be obscured from their consciousness . And the physical pain and suffering that they've had to endure can only seem a mere by product of their duty to us. But knowing what it is that they've been aseked to do and endure. To my mind what it is that I'd set out to do is too small a consolation for what they've lost.
It's my sincerest wish that they can all have fun today whilst enjoying themselves alongside their families and a few of us who'll no doubt show their gratitude and appreciation. For myself who has served in the military . I see it in some ways a fitting tribute but I only wish I could do more . My time being what it is and how I work. On the weekends that's about the only time I can devote to helping these vets out as and when I can. But more than anything else I consider it to be a privilege in doing so. Because the disdain I've witnessed being shown to some to my mind has been an insult and a slap in the face to the ideals as to what the country states that it is about.
I can only wish that the two teams facing each other today put on a spectacular game that is a feast of athletic achievement and entertainment for us all. Offcourse there'll be a winner and loser to day. But for these particular guests on this day in our minds I hope that you'll view them as winners ?
My affiliations being what they are as an avowed Pats' fan. If they should lose then I don't mind saying that on this day in the accompaniment of these men and women as a host along with my closest friends. My salute'll go out to these vets as much as it'll go out to the winning team of the Lombardi trophy. For to me this is what the day will be about.
It seems at this juncture that Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones is so enamoured with Arkansas' running back Darren McFadden that he's prepared to offer soon to be free agent running back Marion Barber for the prized asset , McFadden. While there's no denying that the running back is a great talent. It's got to be said that at this juncture what we've seen from McFadden though great can't allude to greatness in the NFL.

With the Miami Dolphins having the first pick in the upcoming draft and Bill Parcells' wish to rebuild the franchise through the draft and free agency. It's being mentioned that Jones is intent on getting a deal as soon as possible. Barber a proven talent and Pro Bowler would give the Dolphins legitimacy as a running team with him there to complement the talents of Ronnie Brown. But knowing Jones penchant for his alma mater and everything that's said to come out of Arkansas. One has to wonder if his gamble is worth it ? This isn't Herschel Walker you're intent on trading and what you're getting in return is merely based on potential. And potential as deemed by what it's meant to represent in this day and age doesn't always equate to what one ends up desiring.

For Jones this seems to be a gamble that he's prepared to make and for Parcells. He may well appear only too willing to acquiesce to his former boss's wishes. For Parcells and the Dolphins in getting Barber it'd appear to be a no brainer. And added to the fact that they can move down in the draft and supplement their roster with a feastful of picks would seem to put them in a far better position than they could have ever envisioned.

And whilst it can be said Jones' desire is to bring his team back to the summit of the NFL. A position now occupied by the New England Patriots. His willingness to do things that he believes to right for the franchise even if it may not be what's desired by his coaching staff doesn't appear to faze Jones. As owner he has the final say in all roster moves. The acquisition of Barber whilst great for fans doesn't seem expedient financially or wise . It can be said that the franchise's needs go way beyond the need of a running back. They've needs in other areas that certainly need to be addressed. McFadden as the presumed number one pick in the upcoming draft will no doubt desire a considerable financial package. And judging by the going sums that've been paid out for prized first rounders. It'd be fair to say that a sum upwarsds of $40m to $50m won't be out of the question when it comes his signing. A signing bonus in excess of $30m doesn't seem to be out of the question . Barber could well be signed for far less and he's a proven commodity. But his present status comes into question as it does seem that Jones' desires lay elsewhere and Barber isn't a part of it.
Cowboys' head coach Wade Phillips . picture courtesy of dallascowboys.com/nfl/wadephillips .............
In Jerry's world everything is secondary and his wishes are that of a team that's a winning one and the prized asset is an NFL championship. He's prepared to move heaven and earth to achieve that even if it means that he's being questioned as to his asuteness when it comes to player personnel decisions. It appears that on the surface his coaching staff aren't prepared to question him at this juncture. Wade Phillips and his head assistant Jason Garrett no doubt value Jones' judgement. But who's actually running this team ? Jones' meddlesome ways seems to have unnerving nature for many who've worked for him. And the list of coaches in Dallas over the last decade seems to bare this out.

Jones' wish is to place his franchise at the pinnacle of success and it means dethroning the ever present New England Patriots. What Jerry seems not to be acknowledging is that from within the Patriots are a well ran organization and there coaches and hierarchy work together . Here in Jerry's world it appears that a dictatorship is at work and it's no different than that of a third world dictatorship. What he says goes and no one questions his authority even when he's wrong. In doing so one tends to suffer the consequences of questioning his authority. You're shown the door in a none to welcoming way.

For the Cowboys this season has been an unfulfilling and I'd dare say that come draft day it could well be another one of missed opportunities ?
Well with a 1,000lb g*orilla off his back and although still living in the shadow of his more illustrious brother. Eli Manning finally did what was asked of him . And that was to lead his team to a win in the playoffs. Albeit that he was facing the less than stellar Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

What that teams lacks in offensive capabilities at times can be painstakingly frustrating for a team when they face their defense. And at times so it was for the Giants as the faced the Buccaneers in the supposedly hostile environment of Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. That being said you knew that it was going to be somewhat of a less than competent day for Jon Gruden's team. Who after resting many of his starters saw what the Giants had in store for them throughout much of the afternoon. And less we forget the Buccaneers mistakingly took that the win of NFC South would be something to build upon in the postseason.

Whilst the Buccaneers got off to a good start it was plain to see that they'd be in for a less than productive day. Veteran quarterback Jeff Garcia coming of an injury and continuing to show his age, showed that no matter how wily a veteran he might be. His legs can no longer take him where he wants to go. Harrassed and hustled throughout the game and with the protection of his offensive line almost an aberration. He was unable to perform the feats that he was able to during the regular season. Much to the joy of the Giants' fans in attendance and to the woes of the Buccaneers' fans who lamented his performance on the day. What can't be denied on this day was that Manning showed that when poised and not asked to do too much, he's more than capable of leading this team. But his real problem lies in the fact that he's still proned to making the mistakes of a player that hasn't got his head into the game. Something that we've seen all too often from a player who lives in the shadow of his more illustrious brother Peyton Manning.
Manning launches a pass over teammate Ahmad Bradshaw to wide receiver Amani Toomer in yesterday's game against the Buccaneers. picture courtesy of getty images/Al Messerschmidt........
Despite the Giants' impressive away record in the league this season at 7-1 , it was Manning's inconsistent play that came under scrutiny. He was at times competent as he was erratic. And the thought was that if placed under pressure and harrassed by the Buccaneers defense then he'd falter. But if anything it was the other way around as it was the more experienced opposing quarterback Jeff Garcia who had a less than imposing game. With Garcia being unable to produce his usual steady form it was left to others on the Bucs' team to show their grit and determination. They fell short and much to the lament of the home fans whose postseason woes were about to come to an abrupt end. Many left the game before it even ended perhaps showing their indignation at what they thought should've been an easy win for their team. Manning on the other hand showed his composure when needed and although his game stats weren't stellar. It was just enough to lead his team in this game and into the next round where they'll face the Dallas Cowboys.
Manning hands off the ball to running back Brandon Jacobs during Sunday's win over the Buccaneers. picture courtesy of ap/photos/DougBenc...
One doubts that Manning will be able to replicate this feat against the Cowboys in the next round. But for the Giants' fans in attendance and those who saw the game on television they may well be hoping that there's a chance to upend the Cowboys at Texas Stadium. Something that they'll have to do against a divisional foe that has already beaten them twice this season. Not out of the realms of possibility but something that could happen should they show belief in themselves. It was something alluded to by veteran defense player Michael Strahan in his postgame interview with the press. When he stated that if the team plays like a team then on the day they're capable of beating anyone. And for the Cowboys' fans that'd be anyone but them. They won't willingly succumb to Manning or the rest of his teammates in the divisional playoffs. So it's to be expected that this game will be a good one.
Teammates Eli Manning and Plaxico Burress at the start of the first quarter of the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. picture courtesy of ap/photos/ Doug Benc...........
At this juncture Manning can live with the fact that he's guided this team diligently but knows that the next time around it won't be that easy. And it would be redundant to think that he'd so easily rest on his laurels knowing what's in store for him against the Cowboys. A game that'll determine a winner and entry in the NFC championship game. Something that mightn't been on everyone's mind when looking at this team at the start of the season. As good as they appear to be on paper there was always that underlying thought that they could only go as far as Manning could indeed take them. And with the inconsistency of his game being what it is. Many of us are somewhat surprised at this juncture as to what has happened with the Giants. But what was really surprising was the consistency with which Manning played during the game. Perhaps at long last the signs of maturity are beginning to show ?
Bush's tail of sweet revenge is none other than Kim Kardashian.
More of Kardashian and less of Reggie I say, off the playing field that is !
Not since the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005 have they seen so much havoc in the city of Miami. And who should be surprised by it all ? Afterall this was a team that performed so badly in the regular season within the NFL. That many thought that there was a serious threat of Miami Dolphins going winless for the season.
Mr Clean and his presence will be welcomed in Miami. He's live persona will be that of Bill Parcells.
But for the myopic and naivete' of the now departed Brian Billick that record of mediocrity would've prevailed. The Ravens succumbed to a team that was so bad at times that it was beyond farcical in watching them. At times the Dolphins' play was reminiscent of watching silent movie from the twenties. And if one had muted the sound on their tv you may well have thought that of the team. This team would've made the Keystone Cops seem athletic in their prowess.
Dolphins' owner H D Wayne Huizenga . picture courtesy of yahoo.com/searchimages...........
Now with the arrival of the renowned Bill Parcells the luster that once was the Miami Dolphins we're led to believe will rise to the surface like a phoenix. But aren't those extinct one might ask ? Well I dare say to most Dolphins' fans any semblance to return to some normalcy for the franchise would be welcomed. Billionaire owner Wayne Huizenga was virtually on the cusp of selling the franchise. Do I hear a bid ?

Well alas , Wayne has now got his man and Parcells has been swift and merciless in his execution of personnel decisions. With the simple premiss of Donald Trump and his Apprentice reality show . Parcells has shown the door to GM Randy Mueller and now long suffering coach Cam Cameron. Were it not for these two individuals whose depth or lack of knowledge of the game. This franchise wouldn't be in the position it is in today. Bad personnel decisions along the way and a coach who commanded about as much respect as piece of excrement beneath one's feet has led Miami to where it is today. Say nothing of which Cameron's predecessors weren't too enlightened either when it came to coaching within the NFL ranks. Nick Saban and Dave Wannstedt have been as enlightening as a damp squib in their tenure with the franchise.

A 1-15 was nothing to write home about. But at least they won a game didn't they ? And as I alluded to before but for the stupidity of Brian Billick and the Baltimore Ravens ' coaching staff the Dolphins would've remained winless. So what can be expected of Bill Parcells and his four year plan ? That's the length of contract but seriously doubts that he'll see it right the way through. It's not been within his nature to stay that long with a franchise even after rebuilding from the ground up. Especially with his most return to the game where he remained a little over two years with the Dallas Cowboys. Well if you had Jerry Jones looking over your shoulder at your every move like your a child taking test wouldn't you too leave abruptly ? The off field antics of prized wide receiver Terrell Owens could well have swayed him in his decision to leave. But no one can't deny what we're seeing with the Cowboys this season has come from the seeds sown by Parcells with regard to their personnel.
Huizenga was prudent in choice of Parcells as he's seen the franchise slip from its once lofty perch . No longer a perennial contender within the AFC let alone the NFL. They've become a bye product of their own making . The hiring both Wannstedt and Saban were clear missteps. And now in hiring in Parcells it could be said that they're back on a sure footing as of now. In his role as their head of player personnel all decisions concerning the staff will down to him. It'll be his choice in the hiring a coach for the franchise that'll clearly steer the team for the next four or five ye
