This weekend I saw the San Antonio Spurs put up such a putrid display against the Los Angeles Lakers that I thought I'd been watching a battalion of French soldiers in battle. Never mind that we're talking about the reigning NBA champions. The accolade itself no longer seems adept for this team.

As an avowed fan of the Spurs I never though that I'd see a team lay down and surrender with such ease. And Greg Popovich as the team's coach has got to be angered by the display. Wheres the Lakers after this victory have got to be all the more invigorated by the win. Not only that their confidence will have grown immensely. With everything to play for and the #1 seeding in the Western Conference still up for grabs. It now becomes a two horse race between the Los Angeles Lakers and the New Orleans Hornets.

San Antonio at this point are out of the hunt for the # 1 seeding as it's mathematically impossible for them to obtain it without both teams ahead of them imploding. And judging by the way that both are playing at present that's unlikely to happen. The Spurs for their part placed themselves in this mess with the apparent lack of inconsistent play down the sretch. Certainly not something that you'd expect of a Popovich coached team. Normally you'd see a team that's disciplined and executing well on both ends of the floor. Somehow as of late this hasn't been the case with this team. They've become lethargic and inefficient.
A somewhat bewildered Tony Parker looks on as his team succumbs to the Lakers in the final moments of the fourth quarter in the game played at the Staples Center. picture courtesy of nbae/getty images/ Noah Graham ..........
The Spurs' triunmvirate of Tim Duncan , Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker so much a part of last season's win over the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Finals have been less than stellar this season. Parker coming of a prolonged injury has yet returned to form. Duncan for his part ever remaining consistent hasn't taken this team on his shoulders and willed it to win. Ginobli though for his part has shown us flashes of his genius and when coming off the bench he's all too often provided the spark needed to ingite the team. But then once having performed up to expectation they then mire themselves back to the depths of mediocrity. It has been this that's made many of the fans incensed and somewhat bewildered.

This season the Western Conference has become so contentious and fractured that it's been akin to watching a prolonged battle between several adversaries that are equally adept as one another. Much has been made of the trades that've gone on across the team as several opf the teams in question immediately became better almost overnight. The Spurs weren't part of the contretemps that took place as they basically stayed pat in terms of roster movement. Their one acquiree was Damon Stoudemire of whom it can be said that his best days are indeed behind him and not ahead of him. As a backup to Parker he's shown nothing of the adeptness and clarity that we know Parker is capable of. It was like obtaining a mule to replace a prized race horse. You know that the mule may well be hard working but he wouldn't be able to meet all of your expectations when called upon.

For the Spurs (54-25) now will be the time for them to prove themselves. With their final three games left in the regular season it is encumbent upon them to find themselves back in a groove. Their upcoming game against the Sacramento Kings'll prove whether not they've got the intestinal fortitude to acquit themselves well. With the postseason coming up they can ill afford to be playing so inconsistently. And they'd be foolhardy to underestimate whoever they'll face in the opening rounds of the playoffs. Such is the contentious of the division where the margin of error can't be tolerated if you're intentions are to win a championship. Over the years we've seen how adept this franchise can be when facing certain types of adversity but this year has been a year like no other. We've seen the ascension of the Hornets the re-emergence of the Lakers , the Suns and Mavericks remaining dangerous as ever. And in the Denver Nuggets we may well be seeing a team that's finally turned the corner and that's willing to believe that anything is possible.

The fans in San Antonio however have got to be feeling somewhat strange seeing the team struggle the way that they've been doing as of late. I know living here in Central Florida and supporting the team from afar I'm perplexed as to the dilemma that the team now finds itself in. We may well be still considered one of the favorites within the conference to win it all. But at this juncture I'd certainly place a caveat in there . As with each passing game our tenure on the championship seems to fading all too quickly for my own liking. It feels great when you're noted as being a champion when you're dethroned that feeling just hits you in the pit of your stomach when you're told that you're not. And that's a feeling that none of us really likes to hear when someone says that about the team you support.
As for the pretense that the Suns has what it takes to win it all. Based on yesterday's evidence of their display against the Dallas Mavericks I'm inclined to think not. They showed that they've not got the discipline needed to close out a game when it's all on the line.
Amare Stoudemire of the Suns dunks over the Mavericks' defenders. picture courtesy of nbae getty images/Jesse Garrabant .......
You''ve got to commend the Mavericks for sticking in there and showing the Suns how things are done properly. I was originally of the belief that the Mavericks had no heart , leadership skills and that they were afraid when placed under a great deal of pressure. They showed me otherwise in their all too well executed game down the stretch of the fourth quarter leaving the Suns with the unenviable task of having to look at themselves in the mirror after this defeat.
Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks moves the ball upcourt in the game against the Suns. Dallas defeated the Suns 105-98 in the game with Nowitzki scoring 32 pts for Dallas. picture courtesy of nbae getty images/Bob Garrabard .....
In allowing the Mavericks to come back from and erase a 13 pt deficit in the 4th quarter of a game showed that the Suns aren't just a work in progress. But that they've still got a hell of a lot of learning to do. That in of itself shows us all the reason why the Western Conference has been so competitive this season , as teams contesting a playoff berth have to scrap for every win even when things are against them. It'd appear that the lessons being taught by coach Mike D'Antoni if the Suns aren't being listened to by his team.
Shaquille O'Neal and Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns an experienced duo who between them have over 20 years of playing experience in the NBA. Somehow it was all for nought against the Mavericks. picture courtesy of nbae getty inages/ Jesse D Garrabant.......
For all that has and is being said of the O'Neal trade and what it does for the team. If it's meant to be addition by subtraction then there may well have been a missing piece to the equation. For all of Shaquille's wiles and efferfescent humor if he's not prepared to show his own leadership qualities and add it to how the team plays then it'll have been to no avail. He may well have to defer to the likes of Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire but that shouldn't stop him showing his teammates what he's still capable of doing.

The intangibles that O'Neal is meant to bring to the Suns is his leadership and winning experience. As of yet it hasn't rubbed off on his teammates. And when it comes to overall discipline oncourt it appears that we're only seeing glimpses of it from the team in sporadic spells. This is something that they certainly can't afford to do in the playoffs. Difference maker or not this isn't just about one man it's actually about a team and how it acquits itself during the playoffs. If there's nothing of substance there then team won't fare well.

For the Mavericks they've shown that with the return of Nowitzki there's the belief that the ship may have been righted. His return brought a rejuvenance to the team and perhaps a sense of purpose. But with the remaining games of the regular season still to be played we can't really know how much or little they'll have to offer . Suffice to say that this win will go a long way in giving them a great deal of confidence. For the Suns it can't helped their situation overall. If anything it's given time to pause for thought and to rethink their strategy. Going down in defeat like this can't have done much for their confidence at all.
The fight within the conference for postseason playoff berths remains a tight race with the seedings and how one finishes making a great deal to each team . As it'll determine who they'll face in the opening rounds. And with that in mind which team's position would you rather be in ? The Mavericks or the Suns ?
You know there's something wrong when a former player is caught in the cross hairs of an owner's rant as to his team's malaise. It can't have been missed by anyone who's noticed the itinerant rantings of Timberwolves' owner Glen Taylor and much to the chagrin of others over how he felt that the franchise was let down by Kevin Garnett.
In happier times Taylor seen here with former player Kevin Garnett. picture courtesy of nba.com/minnesotatimberwolves/kevingarnett .....
Less I'm mistaken Taylor and GM Kevin McHale all but lost all of the goodwill the franchise built up within the Minneapolis area when they agreed to trade the much beloved star to the Boston Celtics. And though this young team is struggling to determine a path for itself within the league. I find it somewhat infantile for Taylor to be now criticizing the player. Was the time that Garnett spent there in Minnesota not profitable for all concerned ? OK so you didn't so you didn't fulfill your goal of winning an NBA championship. But it wasn't for the lack of trying on Garnett's path during his tenureship there with the T'wolves.

It can be said that though the team has faltered it was of their own making as to the lamentable position that they now find themselves in. As for McHale we've not heard a response from him as to his owner's childlike rant. For Taylor to suggest tht Garnett tanked the season by sitting out 5 games because of an injury is asinine and not deserving of a reply from the player , himself. I suspect that Taylor has forgotten that the roster surrounding the player wasn't all that impressive to begin with. But then that's what you get in a hiree of McHale's supposed pedigree. His assessment of NBA talent is broderline suspect at best and only marginally worse than that of his counterpart in New York. Though we knew off the bat the New York Knicks were going to be terrible this season anyway. As to how bad I don't believe that anyone believed that they'd be this lamentable.

In all honesty though whatever gave anyone the idea that Isaiah Thomas was ever any good as a coach let alone a great assessor of NBA personnel ? Much of the same can be said of McHale himself as he was skirting under the radar of not having to operate in major market in the NBA. The veracity of Taylor's argument is about palpable and palatable as asking someone to take a swift knee to the groin. For the reciever it'll be painful and for the aggressor of the action it only goes to show how infantile they are.

The Twolves' record in the Northwest Division stand at an abysmal 17-50 some 27.5 games behind the Utah Jazz. Only the morbidly moribund Seattle Supersonics has a worse record within the division. But when you're witnessing the play within the division you've only got to appreciate how bad things have become for the likes of the T'wolves and Sonics.
Randy Foye of the T'wolves tries to evade a Grizzlies' player. picture courtesy of nbae/getty images/David Sherman.....
About the only thing that the team has in its favor as of now is that it's youth based and laden with a varying degree of talent. And at the core of its element are Al Jefferson the leading scorer on the team, Randy Foye, Rashard McCants and Corey Brewer. Whether or not coach Randy Wittman can steer this team in the right direction is open to question.
As for McHale he's sitting atop of this curent mess and on appearance his position would seem safe for now. But only Glen Taylor seems to think that much of the franchise's problems seem to stem from what he believes was Garnett's sitting out the final 5 games of the season. Pity that he and McHale didn't think about surrounding Garnett with the talent required to make the team a real contender.
For all that's happening and will happen in the NBA this season. There's meant to be a certainty as to what we ought to expect with regard to the season. But that's been laid to rest in some ways because of the spate of trades that've taken place within the Western Conference in the last few weeks.
Perhaps the best center the game has seen over the last thirty years ? Shaquille O'Neal of the Suns. picture courtesy of nbae/getty images/Lance Murphy ........
What was once meant to be a certainty concerning some teams advancing to the playoffs. On appearance that no longer seems to be the case. Shaquille O'Neal moves from the Miami Heat to the Phoenix Suns. And they're allegedly meant to be a favorite to make it out of the talent laden conference to the NBA Finals. Their play would suggest otherwise at this juncture. As O'Neal has yet to find that synergy with his teammates. GM Steve Kerr still feels that given time Shaq'll become attuned to the ways of his teammates and their play.

If I were a Suns' fan I'd feel that there'd be cause for concern as Shaq has yet to acquit himself adequately on the court and show what he's made of. He lumbers up and down the court as if he's laden down with an elephant on his back. Shaq's becoming more of a liability than anyone is willing to admit. As many believe that he's still got what it takes to steer this team ultimately in the right direction. At this juncture though it may well be too early to assess the situation overall. It's becoming clear that if the Suns are not only to make it into the postseason they as a team'll have to play a whole lot better. And Shaq in particular'll have to raise his playing and commitment level once and for all. Shaq has never been known to keep himself at the optimum level of fitness. As his primary force of subduing his opponents ahs always been sheer brute force and intimidation .
Jannero Pargo of the Hornets and Leandro Barbosa of the Suns contest a loose ball. picture courtesy of ap/photo/Alex Brandon .........
It's no longer working as many of the younger players within the league have found Shaq out and he's now become ever so predictable . That being said the other components of the team'll have to pick up the slack when Shaq isn't playing well. And that'll be encumbent on the likes of Nash , Stoudemire , Grant and Diaw. Without their contributions this team'd be lamenting as an also ran within their division.

Tonight we may well be seeing one of the more enticing games of the week thus far. The New Orleans Hornets will square of against the Utah Jazz. And the two teams possess arguably two of the best point guards playing in the league at this juncture. With all due respect to the likes of Jason Kidd and Baron Davis. But in Chris Paul of the Hornets and Deron Williams of the Jazz we're seeing the players that'll epitomize how the game'll be played in the future. Both are undeniably great talents. And their maturity belies their years in the league.

Paul along with West , Stojackovic and Chandler have quietly gone along and posted one of the best records in the Western Conference. And if anything have given notice that their time may well have arrived. Coach Byron Scott has them playing a competitive brand of basketball that's reliant on speed , offense , defense and a great deal of agility . And in Paul he's got a like minded oncourt general who epitomizes hustle and flow. He's become a cold hearted assassin.

The Jazz have been on something of tear but they too know that it's not what you do in the regular season that counts. It's the postseason where the glory is attained and legends and legacies are cemented. An d the play of their own point guard seems to bear this out. He's been the player that the fans have sought since the retirment of Stockton and the departure of Karl Malone. And with power forward Carlos Boozer having another productive year. It seems too that the Jazz have their sights set on garnering a postseason b erth. And with the way things are beginning to shake out in the conference . There no longer seems to be a certainty as to who'll make the postseason let alone win their respective divisions.

The battle between the two of the more quintessential young point guards within the league ought to be something to watch. As neither'll want to back down. And both are equally willing to show their offensive prowess on the floor. To determine who is the better of the two would be akin to trying to split an atom particle. They're both equally as good as one another to my mind. The difference between them is that finite. I'm not a betting man as those days are long gone and behind me now. But even I wouldn't to place a wager as to who is the best amongst the two of them. Suffice to say I'll leave it for the fans out there to decide. All I know is that I know good basketball when I see it. And these two and the way that they play are the epitome of it at its very best.

I for one am hoping to watch them both contest what'll definately be a very entertaining game. And as to who'll win is anyone's guess at this juncture. Suffice to say that these two teams have been playing the sort of entertaining game that draws fans back to the arenas. And that if anything is what the NBA is all about at the end of the day.
Superlatives and hyperbole are too great a word to be used to describe the play of the Portland Trailblazers as of late. If they're not the 'hottest' team in the NBA as of now. Then I'd like for someone to tell me who is ? Well we know that the Boston Celtics were going to be good with their triumvirate of Allen , Garnett and Pierce. But who amongst foresaw the play of the Trailblazers ? For many they might well as have been dead in the water once Greg Oden went down due to unforeseen complications.

What has been so enthralling about this all is the zest with which this team plays , the unselfishness of the players on the team and their commitment shown to one another oncourt. That to me has been the mark of this team. And less we forget they also possess one of the youngest lineups in the league. Under the tutelage of coach Nate McMillan the team seems to be playing as though their lives depended on it. He's got them believing in themselves and their unselfish nature is borne out by the way that they play. Albeit that they're not expected to garner a postseason berth. The experience of playing together as a team will augur well for the franchise in the future.

In LaMarcus Alridge and Brandon Roy they may well possess one of the best young offenesive tandems in the league. And even when those two budding young stars haven't been playing that well. Others have not only stepped up their game but they've also stepped to the fore and contributed a great deal to the team's overall play. It's not often that can be said of a young team that in reality has no veteran leadership on its roster. So it's left to their coach Nate McMillan to deliver that inate leadership, will and desire to win. And in may ways it epitmozes what McMillan was about as a player. He may not have been the purest of athletes but what he lacked in physical presence he more than made up for it by sheer grit and determination. And that's what we're seeing from this team at present.
Roy and teammate Martell Webster celebrate the team's thirteenth consecutive win in the league. Obviously there are those of us out there who feel that this team hasn't done anything much as of now. But when you look at the likes of the Celtics and what they're at present achieving. Are you sure that in two years from now that team will still be of prominence ? As it is Garnett though not yet in the twilight of his career may well be only two years away from calling it a day. And during his tenure within the league all he's had to show for his skills is one measly MVP award and not much else of merit. Some fans who've awaited the awakening of the Celtics have just began to realize afterall that Ainge quite possibly has a brain. In reality we all know that if Garnett weren't in Boston by no means would the team be having the success that it's having at present. And with the Trailblazers you can see the that this team is building something for the long haul. Whereas for the Celtics it's something that's been built for the immediacy of winning a championship. And if they should implode in the postseason one wonders what their fans'll end up thinking ?

With all that has gone on within the NBA thus far. This if anything to my mind has been one of the more surprising stories of the season. The success of the Celtics while stimulating has to be put into prespective. The Eastern Conference for all of its merits isn't exactly a beast in terms of overall talent ? What it lacks in team flair it makes up for in workman like play by the better players within its confines. The Heat are all but dead in the water ! The Bulls might as well be just treading water albeit that Ben Wallace looks like he's playing completely lost amongst his teammates. The Nets are just doing it with smoking mirrors. As you can be sure that either once Carter , Kidd or Jefferson goes down for prolonged injury spell , their season is all but done. And the Pistons will just roll along as always , though not quite under everyone's radar.

Ther Cavaliers will only go as far as LeBron can take 'em. And with the roster being what it is at present it doesn't look as if it'll be all that far. They may have struck ligthning in a bottle last year. But one can't expect it to be repeated a second time. The basketball god's aren't that altruistic. The feast is served to you on a silver platter but in the end it's up to you to finish it. And that's something they were unable to do last season. And while I won't decry what the Celtics are doing isn't great for the NBA. Unless they close out the season with an emphatic win of the NBA championship. I for one at present will just judge 'em on what they're doing as of now. And not what many feel that they should do. These aren't the Celtics of old and two or three years from now the careers of their triumvirate may well be over. And in that time if they've not at least won a championship will we all be any more the wiser for seeing them ? At least with seeing what the Blazers have to offer us at present we know that the future is indeed bright for this franchise , as of now.

And despite the fact it's still early in the season , I , as a basketball fan do like what I'm seeing from this team. They're entertaining and at the same time they're going out there and having fun . And that if anything for the game itself can't at all be bad.
