Of late I've become very disillusioned not primarily with life but at certain things that are happening. Baseball's season has opened with great furore and already the Yankees and Sox are it. The NBA postseason starts on Sunday with the first round of the playoff and the game's fans are definately in for a treat.
Marlins' SS Hanly Ramirez makes a play jumping over the Braves' Matt Diaz. Diaz was called out in a game which the Marlins won 6-5 to stay atop of the NL East with a 9-5 record. Something of a suprise to many at this juncture. picture courtesy of ap/photo/J. Pat Carter ..............
And that the machination that is the NFL is in full swing with their own showcase ................NFL Draft Day just around the corner. All of which os very important to the fans of their respective teams. We'll see how adept the coaches, GM's and their coaching staff apparently are. It's said that the Miami Dolphins are in talks with their prospective first round pick..........in this case the overall # 1 pick Chris Long. Just wondering the selling points of that particular conversation ?

Not to be left out but the NHL playoffs have already started. Is anyone really overawed and particularly that interested until the conference finals start ?. If the Red Wings, Penguins or Capitols aren't involved . I doubt that the interest'll be there for it let alone the Stanley Cup Finals themselves.

For myself this'll be somewhat of a respite away from sports as such over the next few days. Although my laptop will be in tow as I embark on trip to Washington D.C. I don't know that I'll get much time to post a topic but I'll try. Several of my buddies and I will be riding up to the nation's capitol to see some of the varied and storied landmarks. Something that in the years I've resided in this country I've never done. It'd be remiss of me not to explain why. Having lost several friends over the last few months in Aghanistan and Iraq collectively , I thought it only appropriate that I honor them in such a way by embarking on this journey. Having not ridden a bike in some 5 years this'll be something anew for me. Here in Central Florida it's not exactly seen as the sane thing to do considering not only the congestion on the roads but the apparent lack of respect for motorcyclists by the drivers in general.

As to what to expect from this journey I can only hope it'll equate with something positive for my friends and I. Over the last few years it's been one of highs and lows worrying over the safety of my tounger brother as he's serving in the wiles of Iraq with the British military. His safety and those of friends there that are serving are the utmost in my mind. Having lost several of them since the start of this exercise has left me exacerbated and angry . The sacrifices thus far have been monumental for the families that've lost loved ones. And at the same time the political gristle that has been gleaned from this serves the political machinations of the Presidential candidates on the stump.

For the days that I'll be within the city touring its historic sites I'll take time to reinvigorate my fervour for the country I now call my home. Fifteen years after my arrival little did I envisage that I'd be spending what'll amount to be the rest of my adult life here. Having made new friends and alliances that I've come to value and immsersing myself the country's history and mindset. I can now say that I've finally arrived at a point in my life where I'm happy. Though there are several things that've not met my satisfaction I see it only as something minor than being of paramount urgency.

Whatever I find from this journey as I embark upon it with my friends . I hope that it ends up serving me in a positive way. And though there'll be much to see and do. Knowing that I'll have been there will be more than enough to give me the solace I seek and a feeling of well being. In my military service with the British military I'd been some far flung places and at the same I'd travelled much in my youth. Having done it gave me a greater feel and appreciation for the ways of the world and the culture therein. I appreciated it much as I've come to appreciate what's been placed within my domain.

This is a journey that I know will have some meaning and be a fulfillment of an ambition to see the nation's capitol , its citizens and become a part of that thriving entity that is known as America. Many come to this nation that's deemed a land of opportunity but foresake what it has to offer. I'll accept it gladly knowing that it gives me hope for the future. I've emblazoned myself in its culture and to an extent many of its ways but at the same I still remember from whence I came.
top - My best on your journey. I hope that what you find enriches the hope you have for your future while pulling up thoughts and memories of your past. My best to your brother and your friends and hopes that you will see them again soon. Sports takes a backseat to the world sometimes...and there isn't anything wrong with that. Have fun.

That'll be one of my intentions to an extent. The girlfriend couldn't understand when I told her that I needed to do this just for myself and my own piece of mind . It's something that I for one hope'll bring about a change for the better.
Thanks for the props bro !

I've been told that there are parts of DC that'd make Baghdad seem angelic. As it is I don't envisage that we'll be visiting those parts at all. For me this'll be a sojourn and rite of passage rolled into one. My buddies have all been there before but for this'll be my first time.
Looking forward to it and at the same time I just want to take in what it is that the city has to offer.
DC is a beautiful place this time of year. The memorials and monuments are spectacular sights. I am sure that you will find it a good experience.
As with any big city, there are always places you don't want to be at certain times. I didn't feel any less safe in DC than I felt in Chicago, St. Louis, or LA.

I'm just hoping to take it all in . With the vast array of history that the city has to offer. It's been something that I'd wanted to do from the very first time I came to this counry on a visit some 20 years ago. At the time I was touring the West Coast .. L.A. , San Francisco , San Diego, Tucson, Az,Phoenix and Scottsdale . Living here in C Florida I wasn't fully appreciative of the city itself. It's been all about Miami, South Beach, Ft Lauderdale and Orlando within the state. I'll probably hit the Big Apple later on in the year dependent on my work shchedule.
Chimin' out.
SteveoinHTown For me it was more than the zeal that I wanted to do this.
It's something I've wanted to do for a long time.
Several of my buddies who are now professionals also served in the military like myself. Though my service was with the British military. I'd served in Ireland during the early eighties when much of the troubles there were really heightened.
Something not unlike what the US and British military forces are now facing in Iraq and Afghanistan .
I'd like to think that there'll be a respite to all of this.
I understand why you need to do this. I haven't been yet but I need to go and will one day. Tell us all about it when you get back and looking forward to many many photos.
Yee Mum It'd be remiss of not to have pictures but infact I don't. That was the last thing on my mind and even though I'm still here I haven't even taken time to purchase a disposable camera. I'm just relishing seeing all of the sites and the historical features of the city. However over the weekend there was a Neo Na8zi rally that took place here in Washington D.C. Something I never thought possible would've taken place in this day and age. Between 1500 to 3000 of 'em took part in this rally and there thousands who also turned to voice their disapproval. With the Pope in the city as well I'm surprised that it didn't get more national coverage by the press.
But as they say this part and parcel of what makes this country great. It's being the chance for "freedom of expression" no matter how heinous it might be.
We'll be riding round on our Harley's or in my case a Suzuki 500 cc. I'm the only one amongs the seven of us who doesn't own a bike outright. So I had to make do with a rental.
I'll be off to visit both the Vietnam Memorial for a second time and then go to the Holocaust Museum. Both places'll no doubt send a shiver down my spine.

'Nique My buddies and I did this not so much on a whim but just as a way of honoring friends we'd lost in the current and past conflicts. They're all vets of the US military. Whereas I served in the British military. My own view of military action was the four years spent in Ireland during the troubkles there of the early eighties. I lost comrades there as well as in the current conflict in Iraq. My younger brother is there noe serving too.
He's in the southern part of the country just outside the city of Basra.
War is hell espectially those who've been a part of the conflict and have seen the loss of lives. And irreparable damage that it does on all sides.
It's not something that ought to be taken lightly.
As to the pictures I won't be taking any as I see it as something of a private and personal fulfillment in honoring thoise guys .
Like I have said before (usually when we didn't remember the camera)
The pictures you take with your minds eye are more dimensional than any other camera's work.
You can place the words in anothers mind to share the scene.
Yee Mum
I think this is something that we've all gone through at one time or another. In the end it ought to make us a better person overall.
Hopefully this'll be a fulfilling endeavor for all of us ?

My boys and I are heading back south tonight as we'll be riding down back to Florida. Thus far it's been a real gratifying experience and totally fulfilling for us all. The one place where we all got emotional was at the Vietnam Memorial. The tranquilityand the solace that the place brings is totally unnerving.
It was something for me that I needed to do personally. It's brought me a great deal of satisfaction along the way.
Hopefully I'm a better person for it !

Al; Teddy Roosevelt once said something to the effect , that all immigrants will be welcomed if they, learn English, and try to asimilate or aclomate themselves to our way of life. With your love of this country, it's sports and fine ladies, and your command of the English language, I think Teddy would have made you example #1. Great post, one of your best, hope your trip is both enjoyable and educational. your friend B@O.
You know what? I'm not done yet. I see immigrants day after day after day that don't, speek the language, dont want to, show any interest in be'ing here but for the dollars, don't care about taking part in this melting pot experiment, who are just a drain on our society, and then i see your posts, i remember the one at Thankgiving. this one, like that one, is a breath of fresh air. You got it wright, you got my respect...

Yee Mum This country affords people a lot of things. But what I've found is that there are some who expect a great deal more from it than they're willing to give back in return. For me this is more about a journey of awakening and to honor lost friends. That being said it's not perfect but it's the best that we've got . It can only get better if we strive collectively to make ikt so . Instead of pulling in opposit directions. In effect that's what the political parties are doing. In doing so it's creating a nation of the have's and have not's.
And sadly we're no better off for it.
Our political leaders only allude to telling us things that they think'll make us feel good rather than the truth and cold hard facts.
This country is made up of a broad diaspora of people but it yet it's now become divided along racial and socio economic lines to the detriment of every citizen and inhabitant here. And that is a god given fact without a doubt.

The solace and solemnity felt was worthwhile in making the trip. It added a new perspective to my life and that of my friends who accompanied me on the trip.
We each found something in our own way and hopefully we'll be able to use it to make not only our own lives better . But those around us too in way or another.
This is lovely, all of it... from your intro to the comments. And most importantly for the pilgrimage you took. Sorry for your losses, but I am glad for your sustaining state of happiness. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for the words of encouragement . And indeed the trip was well worth it for my friends and I.
Once having returned I took some time to reassess some of the positive and negative things that were going on in my life.
I resumed my studies and attained my MBA and things have taken something of a positive step in various aspects of my life.

tophat, had to check in and get your take on Usain Bolt's performance in the 100m. In light of his record-breaking "jog", do you still think Michael Johnson's 200m WR is safe? (we had a discussion about it once)
I say if he gets his head right and runs through the line, the record can be his. What say you?
As one of the only people with whom I can talk track n' field around here, I'm interested to hear your thoughts...
P.S. hope your journey treats you well. See all the sites and stay out of trouble.

The Olympics so far has been simply amazing.
And it can be said the exploits of Bolt and Phelps have been exceptional.
