With all the talk of famed golf tutor Butch Harmon dispensing with offering his services to two time major winner John Daly. One can summize that with the advent of this latest debacle in the golfer's episodic and turbulent life. It'd be wise to think that things couldn't get any worse for the golfer. But we'd be remiss in thinking otherwise at this juncture. Daly's demeanor and the alleged drinking with fans at the event played a part in the decision made by Harmon no doubt. That event was the PODS Championship played Innisbrook Golf Course , Palm Harbor, Fl.

Daly's career thus far has been a topsy turvy ride thats known highs and lows . The winning of the British Open at St Andrews in 1995 and his lone major here in the USA, the PGA championship at Crooked Stick in 1991 have been the highs for the often celebrated golfer. The lows have been his multiple marriages and the ensuing divorces. His witnessing of a former wife being indicted by the Justice Department for moeny laundering and racketeering as well as conspiracy to distribute narcotics. All of which would suggest that Daly's life to say the least has been an eventful one. Bouts of alcoholism that he's yet to overcome. But yet he still finds time to play on the PGA Tour ? Albeit with limited success.

It'd appear that Daly's love of the game isn't much as compared to his love of alcohol and mingling with the fans. If Tiger Woods is meant to be the much heralded driving force behind the game's renaissance and the hysteria he creates amongst the fans. Then it can be said that Daly is the complete antithesis of what Woods stands for . Woods the consummate professional beloved by the majority of the PGA Tour's players and fans alike. Whereas Daly may well be just seen as the circus act that comes to town whose only purpose is be provide his well intentioned clown's act. It may well be pleasing to some fans who can identify with Daly as their everyman with regard to his status on the tour. And while one would feel that Daly may well be at peace with himself. I can't help but wonder what would've happened if he could just concentrate on the game itself without all of the outside distractions ?

The Arnold Palmer Bay Hill Invitational held in Orlando , and one of the more prestigious events on the Florida swing of the PGA Tour was to be where Daly was suppose to be playing as of yesterday. But having missed a tee time at the pro am he was disqualified by the event's organizers and PGA. As to his excuse for missing the tee time that may well not be explainable. As Daly stated that he'd been misinformed as to his tee time. Highly irregular given Daly's propensity for not always wanting to play even if he's been given a sponsor's exemption. Daly marches to the beat of his own drum and his demeanor is not about to change whatever sanctions are imposed on him by the PGA.

If this a harbinger of things to come for Daly for the remainder of his career. It doesn't seem worthwhile that he participates in a game that has served him so well. When he first burst unto the Tour it seemed that he was just the breath of fresh air that the sport needed. His punishing swings when he tee'd off on the course was something of monsterous brute force. Drives in excess of 300 yds were very much like a walk in the park for Daly. But as quick as his star rose it faded just as quickly. His stunning win of the PGA at Crooked Stick was as welcoming as it was surprising to all those who witnessed it. But with the advent of that victory things all too quickly began to spin out of control Daly. As quickly as he stood at the top of the golf plateau , his fall was just as fast if not more spectacular.

And even with the winning of a second major it was apparent that Daly wasn't entirely happy with the notoriety that came with winning. He couldn't be himself. Golf supposedly is a game where its players are always circumspect and thought of as modern day gentlemen. Something that John Daly isn't at all entirely happy portraying as golf may well have been a means to an end for him . Hit a few balls all day long for 18 holes and the respite would be at the nineteenth hole where he could consume as much alcohol as desired. That's the utopia that he sought.
And while no one exactly laments his woes it can be said that he's entirely happy with his all. If nothing else the fans are still there to watch what'll unfold be it good , bad or indifferent. Woods is the Pied Piper of Golf but it's Daly whose become the game's clown prince .
When Daly first won on tour, I took a look at him and decided he was "everyman". I just knew he would have an instant following as the general public could identify with him. But it turned out that he, for whatever reason, wasn't ready to assume that role. He liked to have a good time and it got the better of him. An addictive personality suddenly with a lot of money...
Here's hoping that he can get it together enough to compete on tour, but it certainly doesn't look good for him. I guess we each choose our paths...
TOP: Great Scribble and John is the kind of guy you either hate ,feel sorry for, or like mine is the latter I happin to like John because he represents the average guy only he can hit the ball a hell of a -lot further
his blue collor attitude is what draws the average golfer or fan to him and his non-confomist rebeliest nature is what makes him special ,yes he has his problems but at least he dosn't hide it from anyone and doesn't deny it either, this is how he gets my respect he is who he is- like him or not- hes doing what he loves to do and has fun doing it I only wish I was in the same boat..and Top I just posted a new nascar post if you get a minute come check it out its called Kyle Petty will win at Bristol.....JW
Very good analysis of John Daly. Very good writeup. Daly's problems are well documented, made worse by the "snobs" of the PGA; course there should be a sense of decorum, I guess. Daly reminds me of the awful golf movie Adam Sandler was in; what was it? "Happy Gilmore"? Years and years ago (before Arnold Palmer), the pros mostly had some fun, but played damn good golf too.
Now it is more like a damn business!! Fuzz
al; i never did get into golf but i loved this piece. i have always been perplexed when it comes to jon daly. it seems that half of the people look at him the way they looked at mike tyson, a guy, who with his vices, squandered his talent, another train wreck. while the other half look at him as just a good time charlie, or as you said, an every man. i lean toward the former, i hate to see people waste talent like that. i often wish i had it to waste because im sure i could enfource the self dicipline upon myself to get the most out of it.
anyway, glad your back where you belong.

Very well written. Daly is the type of athlete who won't realize what his career coluld have been until it's over and people say "Boy, he could have great if...", the 'if' in this case being "if he controlled his alcohol problem". blue@orange makes a good comparison to Tyson, who had similar problems of a different kind. It's a shame he'll never know just how good he could have been with a few sober nights. My favorite quote of his came after he signed up with Sobe as his sponser, and thw quote says it all about him
"(Sobe's non-alcoholic drinks) taste good with vodka".
Excellent report on John Daily. He still is a great golfer, no doubt with self punishing personal probs. He could still right that sinking ship and become a force again. I have faith in him.

I'm glad that you enjoyed my take on Daly. As for the man himself he now seems to be lost . And he doesn't really care about the game from what I can see.
As for the boys and girls in Iraq I've got a younger brother who's now serving with the British miltary in the southern part of the country. I myself have also served but at the time it was during the troubles in Ireland. Since those years I've always had an admiration for those who've served their country at the given opportunity. Chimin' out .
edclinchsaint
What's there to be said about Daly that hasn't been said already ? He's been a guy who's said to have had it all. But seems just to be concerned in blowing it all.
Thanks for chimin' with your kind words.

Daly was an immense talent but his best days are now 'long gone' and I for one doubt that we'll ever see those days again. It's as you say he now embodies the Titanic and any other disaster you'd care to name or remember.
Marty Walker
People tend to use the word 'great' far too often around players. Daly has been an adequate but never what one could allude to being a great golfer. He's never sustained the momentum over the course of his career. He can be best described as a 'flash' in the pan and not much else.
Downs'
Daly has been anathema when it comes to the sport. It's saddening to see players just misuse their talent. And then blame their travails on something else.
blue@orange
The real problem that Daly has is that he's been given bad advice by people who say that they have his best interests at heart. And it certainly hasn't helped with his ongoing situation concerning his ex wives.
The guy is a mess as too is his career as of now. He'll never regain that momentum to reach the heights he once had.
fuzzboss
Daly's problems aren't just because of the stuffiness of the PGA. It's because hbe can't handle the limelight and that's where his real problems lie. And less we forget look at his off the field problems. A wife that's been indicted on prostitution and racketeering charges. And did I also mention the narcotics charges ? So you can see that if it's not him then it's others that are also close to him.
JOKERSWILD
Though I'm not a big NASCAR fan I do follow the sport somewhat closely. So yes I'll be popping across to view your post.
As for Daly the vast majority of his problems have been self inflicted and when that happens it usually puts a damper on your professional career.
Yee Mum
Thanks for bringing that to light I've made the necessary adjustment. As for Daly much of his woes are self inflicted. And whilst one would have pity for him. I for one can't do that especially when he chooses to just throw away a God given talent. How else can one explain his woes ?
It's said that everyone loves to watch a 'train wreck' but this is one that I'll refuse to watch. It's sad but having seen what Tyson did to himself I certainly didn't think that I'd be witnessing that same sort self destruction again.
degraff
There's nothing wrong with Daly having a problem but when he makes a point of messing up . It become everyone's problem including his family. But then his family is also a damn mess.
Daly is no longer the player many thought he'd become. He never truly reached his potential and I doubt he'll ever reach those heights again.
Everyone may well love a train wreck or a highway accident. But when it affects others it's never a nice picture to watch.
And the ensuing carnage is never pleasant.
Dwindy1
It's good to be back in the fold. Not that I wanted to be away. But I understand where Fox stands.
As for Daly he's become caricature for everything that's not right as far as the game goes. But yet fans still have an affinity for him. But the real issue I have is his issues in not always abiding by the rules. Never mind that his private life has become one 'big mess' that soap opera fans would be proud of.
hey, good post, tophatal. hope to read more articles in the future. thanks for sharing! i will paste this at my forum on "LargeMingle.com". and i am happy to be called BBW=big beautiful woman by my friends on hot big people meeting club LargeMingle.com
No sympathy for any person like Daly who is blessed with a talent that very few have, and chooses instead to be the architect of his own demise.
Add him to the sad legacy list with the likes of:
David Thompson, Todd Marinovich, Ricky Williams, Art Schlichter, Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, Steve Howe, Mike Vick, Lawrence Phillips, Len Bias and too many others to list...
The saddest part for me is that over the course of my 20+ years coaching, I have coached kids who didn't have a thimble-full of the talent some of these folks wasted, and yet they put in a legendary effort just to be part of a team probably knowing that high school athletics was the furthest they would ever go.
Rackman
You won't find any sympathy whatsoever for Daly here. As I for one feel that as of late he's been a disservice to the sport of golf. His demeanor would suggest that he doesn't give a damn at all. And more to the point it's an insult to the fans when a player of his stature carries himself in such a way.
Reverend Rhythm
Which one will it be ? Celebrity Rehab ? Or something more akin to My Life As A D List Performer With A Type A Personality.
The one thing we've now become accustomed to with Dal is that he's now indeed a 'train wreck ' in the process of happening. The carnage and mayhem that'll ensue won't be at all what we expect it to be. His life both on and off the course has been one hell of a mess as of late.
Rackman
I could see a show where we'd have the two Spears' kids , Lohan, Paris Hilton , Nicole Ritchie , Daly and Hasselhoff. All stranded on an island and having to deal with the relationship issues.
How about you have all those folks you named on an island and a group of contestants arrive on the island. The winner is not the one who can out survive the others, the winner would be the first person to find a shred of integrity or character amongst the group of "celebrities".
Well written post Al...............I've always thought that Daly was more like a train wreck waiting to happen..........Afterwards you would read about it in the morning paper and say: "I can't say that we didn't see that one coming."
As for Butch Harmon and his arrogant better than any mortal man prig personality. He should try coaching Bobby Knight sometime.............LOL!
evilquacks101
I for one wouldn't expect Daly to be a 'choirboy' but his demeanor with regard to his issues are insulting to the fans to say the least. He turns up at events sullen and doesn't attempt to even give it his all. But yet expects the fans to pay their hard earned 'cash' to make an absolute #### of himself on the golf course.
If anything he's being contemptuous to the fans and public alike. Self deprecation at the end of the day may well be his way of hiding his faults but sends the wrong example to kids at the end of the day. And that's what I for one see with him. He doesn't seem to care either way.
Rackman
I think that it'd work the trouble is finding a broadcast or cable network that'd be interested in the concept. We could even have someone like Rosie O'Donnell hosting the damn thing. That way it'd broaden the appeal in terms of demographics.
I too like Daly-Harmon knew what he was getting into when he signed up with him--Besides, whats he gonna teach him? How to drive a ball 1000 yards? He did show a little class by pulling out though. He could have "Milked" Daly for all he's worth..
Cboy4evr
If anything Daly needs Harmon more than Harmon needs him.
His client list reads like aa who's who of golf.
As for Daly he's wasted his talents all for the love of beer, fast and loose women. At one out of two ain't too bad now is it ?
Cboy4evr
Over the course of his career Daly has won close $4.5m and has probably blown a large chunk of it on booze and alimony and countless other things.
The guy's whole life is a damn mess and it can only go downhill from here.
bamaboy22
Knowin' Daly he'd end up having a fight with Weahters if they were to disagree on the choice of clubs for a shot. That being said Daly's career has all but imploded infront of our eyes. He'll never be the player some thought he might be. He's thrown away much of the goodwill he'd built up over the years and has become a cartoon caricature.
