It seems at this juncture that Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones is so enamoured with Arkansas' running back Darren McFadden that he's prepared to offer soon to be free agent running back Marion Barber for the prized asset , McFadden. While there's no denying that the running back is a great talent. It's got to be said that at this juncture what we've seen from McFadden though great can't allude to greatness in the NFL.

With the Miami Dolphins having the first pick in the upcoming draft and Bill Parcells' wish to rebuild the franchise through the draft and free agency. It's being mentioned that Jones is intent on getting a deal as soon as possible. Barber a proven talent and Pro Bowler would give the Dolphins legitimacy as a running team with him there to complement the talents of Ronnie Brown. But knowing Jones penchant for his alma mater and everything that's said to come out of Arkansas. One has to wonder if his gamble is worth it ? This isn't Herschel Walker you're intent on trading and what you're getting in return is merely based on potential. And potential as deemed by what it's meant to represent in this day and age doesn't always equate to what one ends up desiring.

For Jones this seems to be a gamble that he's prepared to make and for Parcells. He may well appear only too willing to acquiesce to his former boss's wishes. For Parcells and the Dolphins in getting Barber it'd appear to be a no brainer. And added to the fact that they can move down in the draft and supplement their roster with a feastful of picks would seem to put them in a far better position than they could have ever envisioned.

And whilst it can be said Jones' desire is to bring his team back to the summit of the NFL. A position now occupied by the New England Patriots. His willingness to do things that he believes to right for the franchise even if it may not be what's desired by his coaching staff doesn't appear to faze Jones. As owner he has the final say in all roster moves. The acquisition of Barber whilst great for fans doesn't seem expedient financially or wise . It can be said that the franchise's needs go way beyond the need of a running back. They've needs in other areas that certainly need to be addressed. McFadden as the presumed number one pick in the upcoming draft will no doubt desire a considerable financial package. And judging by the going sums that've been paid out for prized first rounders. It'd be fair to say that a sum upwarsds of $40m to $50m won't be out of the question when it comes his signing. A signing bonus in excess of $30m doesn't seem to be out of the question . Barber could well be signed for far less and he's a proven commodity. But his present status comes into question as it does seem that Jones' desires lay elsewhere and Barber isn't a part of it.

In Jerry's world everything is secondary and his wishes are that of a team that's a winning one and the prized asset is an NFL championship. He's prepared to move heaven and earth to achieve that even if it means that he's being questioned as to his asuteness when it comes to player personnel decisions. It appears that on the surface his coaching staff aren't prepared to question him at this juncture. Wade Phillips and his head assistant Jason Garrett no doubt value Jones' judgement. But who's actually running this team ? Jones' meddlesome ways seems to have unnerving nature for many who've worked for him. And the list of coaches in Dallas over the last decade seems to bare this out.

Jones' wish is to place his franchise at the pinnacle of success and it means dethroning the ever present New England Patriots. What Jerry seems not to be acknowledging is that from within the Patriots are a well ran organization and there coaches and hierarchy work together . Here in Jerry's world it appears that a dictatorship is at work and it's no different than that of a third world dictatorship. What he says goes and no one questions his authority even when he's wrong. In doing so one tends to suffer the consequences of questioning his authority. You're shown the door in a none to welcoming way.

For the Cowboys this season has been an unfulfilling and I'd dare say that come draft day it could well be another one of missed opportunities ?
I think it would really be imprudent of Jones to make this deal unless he can get more value than what he gives, but like you point out, McFadden is an unproven commodity. If Jerry packaged his two 1st round picks and Marion Barber and I was Parcells, I'd jump at the deal. Then I'd shop Ricky Williams around the league and hope to get a decent draft pick for him or a need player. That one deal would act to shore up the Dolphins offensive and defensive lines with a low 1st round pick each, and possibly add another mid-round pick to grab off more young talent. Word is that Parcells is interested in drafting a pro-style QB as well and there will be Flacco and Ainge available in the 3rd-4th rounds...
Here's hoping Jerry's in love and pulls the trigger. I just know he's looking at the deal that brought Dorsett to the boyz and what he did for them, oh so many years ago...

The incredulity I find here is that Jones could end up ruining his franchise if he goes ahead with this trade and pick. I'm not sayinbg that McFadden isn't indeed good. But no way is he worth the number of picks being bandied about. But knowing Parcells he'll entice Jones into making the deal. An it'll be to Cowboys' detriment in the end.
SoCoPsycHo
If Jones pulls the trigger and initiates this deal and it doesn't pan out. Then you know he'll be blaming his coaching staff for it. A s he never wants to be the one to admit to his mistakes. That sums up the reasons why he's been through so many coaches over the years. He's too meddlesome in the team affairs for his own good. The same can be said of Snyder in Washington.

im a huge packer fan so i dont want dallas to keep barber but i thing they should. if they dont it would be wourse than twins trading johan Santane to the mets!!!
tophatal I keep very in tune to the rumbling rumors out of Valley Ranch. I haven't heard any such rumor for a reliable source. Yet keep in mind that Jones is a very active Razorback alumni, and he was the one who actually made the call to Petrino on behalf the University.
The trade bait names out of Dallas are endless, but more along the lines of Hatcher, Tank Johnson, Rob Carpenter, and Marcus Spears. This is a deep draft for running backs and Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas will be available at the 22nd pick, if not the 28th.
I think Dallas stands pat and takes DeSean Jackson, WR/PR, California with the 22nd and either felix Jones or Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois with the 28th, whichever one Seattle doesn't take at the 25 spot.
But then again a trade wouldn't surprise me. Parcells does not like taking rb's early and they have a good running back staff, which means every team in the league will be contemplating trading up to Miami's spot. True that the Cowboys have what Parcells covets - draft picks - so I guess the rumors will fly between now and draft day. Great story!
If I was Parcells, I would give up my furst round oick to get many other players to form a better nuceas for the team, like upgrade the whole offensive line, or D-line. One top player won't do it for a bottom of the cellar team.
Hey B.R.A, I can give you a worse deal than Johan Santana to the Mets, and it involves the VIKINGS. It is the Cowboys ammunition for their 3 super bowls in the 90's for Herschel Walker. I would love if the Cowboys got a taste of their own medicine. I just don't think the Dolphins would reach that status. Other dumb trades Minny made, Moss for Nap Harris (good lb, but no longer with team) and Troy Williamson. And Daunte for Ryan Cook (the second round pick we used from the Dolphins on a projected 4th rounder.) Moss has only gone on to break the single season record for receiving TD's (he may not have had Rice's season not been cut short due to the strike) and while Daunte hasn't done much, Ryan Cook hasn't been that impressive either. At least we didn't dump Randy for only a 4th rounder.
I don't think Jones ever got beyond that Walker trade as a personnel evaluator. It was his magnum opus everything since has been denouement...I guess for him there won't be a 2nd act until he does what owners do best, sit back, shut up, rake in the cash...

I think that Jones is gambling with the future of his franchise for the entrenched love of an alumnus. As good as McFadden is , I for one wouldn't give up that much for him. And if anything it's certainly not financially expedient to throw away that sort of money on guy when you've got a Pro Bowl type running back on your roster that you can re-sign for far less overall without hurting yourself cap wise.
But in Jerry's world what he wants he usually gets !
bamaboy22
And this is just Jerry being Jerry as usual. He's of the opinion that he's by far the best judge of talent within the NFL. But in all honesty it was down to the likes of Jimmy Johnson that the Cowboys originally 'lucked out' on the Walker deal.
Jones likes to take the credit for these type of things as his personality has always been that way. Rarely does he acknowledge anyone else when he should.

I agree with you wholeheartedly as McFadden isn't a sure thing. It's very rare that a running back taken in the first round pans out and meets everyone's expectations. All the hype over Bush and we've seen his production drop off somewhat. But that could be down to two factors. No O line protection and the other factor could be due to the fact that he's now taggin' Kim Kardashian's ####. But then again who hasn't tapped that ? Her sex tape alludes to the very fact.
Marty Walker
This is a 'no brainer' for Parcells at this juncture. And for Jones wanting to go ahead with this seems comical. His team's needs certainly aren't for a running back. But it's more down to the fact that McFadden is an Arkansas protege more than anything else. Tiwce as a Heisman trophy runner up too.
bamaboy'
This all comes down to the allusions of potential when measured up against real needs. The Dolphins are plentiful while the Cowboys need a running back like Jessica Simpson and Pamela Anderson need breast implants. They're fine and so too are the Cowboys at this juncture. If anything they need to address their issues on the defensive side of the ball .
As for Pam and Jessica they just need to keep on doin' what it is they're doin' by showing us guys a lot more cleavage. But that's just my opinion offcourse !
Midnite Cowboy
That's been the rumblings coming out of Miami. And it's been said that Jones has been in contact with Parcells about this very issue. You've also got to be aware that Barber is a free agent and has to be looking for money from the Cowboys.
He's a proven commodity and a Pro Bowler. But it'd appear that Jones is enamoured with McFadden that he can't see the trees but for the woods.
The Cowboys have other real needs and most certainly a running back isn't one of them. They've got problems on the defensive side of things.
Jerry's concerns shoud be there. But in Jerry's world nothing else matters and in the end what he say goes.
BRA
This is Jones being Jones and wanting to make a big splash. But it could lead to the unravelling of his team. But their real needs are on the defensive side of things. And at this juncture who knows whether or not they'll address it ? He's never been the most astute when it comes to judging talent.
It's been Jimmy Johnson and Parcells that've made the franchise what it is. Jones is more the showman and businessman.
Reverend Rhythm
It's not as if Barber is looking to get 'paid'. But Jones' and the Cowboys' needs at this juncture is not another running back. They've got some deficiencies on the offensive side of the ball. And paying McFadden anywhere between $35-$50m doesn't seem worth it. Especially if you can re-sign Barber for less and save yourself money in the process.
But it'd appear that in Jerry's world nothing seems to matter and what he says goes.
