Noche Latina Hits LA
Mar 23, 2008 | 12:11AM | report this
Los Laguneros contra Los Guerreros -- Domingo. Domingo. Domingo.

That's right.

Tomorrow is Noche Latina en La Ciudad. We've seen a few teams rock the "Los" in front of their respective name, and the Lakers will be the next. The occasion goes hand in hand with the 7th annual 'Fiesta Lakers' at the L.A. Convention Center. Aside from that, I can't find any other info.

The feedback on the jersey is mixed. From an aesthetics standpoint, I think the 'Los' looks too crammed up there. From a culture standpoint, I think it's wrong to criticize the jerseys (unless you pull the "monetary ploy by the NBA card"). According to Wikipedia, the Hispanic and/or Latino demographic makes up 46.5% of Los Angeles' population, plus Latino art and culture plays a big role in what makes Los Angeles Los Angeles.

My understanding is that the Warriors will don the famous "The City" unis. That's kind of unfortunate. "Los Warriors" would have been interesting.

That's marketing for you.
Jerry is trying to make another buck.
It's insulting to many.

Can we demand sports teams in Mexico be renamed to an english moniker, since money sent from the US is Mexico's largest source of income?

It goes both ways.

Realistically, the Lakers name is a joke. Is an aquaduct a lake? Send the name back to Minnesota.

I see your point on the marketing stance. ...And there will be people buying those Gasol "Los Lakers" jerseys. However, the NBA is trying to reach out to the hispanic populous in NBA cities in which the hispanic populous plays a big role. The city of Los Angeles wouldn't be the same without the hispanic/latino influence -- thus capitalizing on that demographic is beneficial to everyone. Of the people that I've seen that disagree with Noche Latina, it's mainly from a fashion standpoint. To me, it honestly looks like a gimmick with "Los" crammed into the original jersey design. I guess it's cool, but what really matters is the win. The last time the Lakers played with modified unis was that big loss to the celtics when they wore the short-shorts for the first half.

Thanks for stopping by though, I definitely see your point.

I guess it's just the fact that "Lakers" was one of the first things to make it into my vocabulary, but, despite the name not fitting with the city, it's the name synonymous with one of the most popular franchises in all of sports... i don't think there's any getting around that.

Los Angeles Hollywood's! I like it.
Fighting Prozac's!

Of course, my first response was to the extreme side. Virtually every decision by owners is about grabbing more coin from us. They mess with tradition they extoll, yet pump out commemorative jerseys like they're the U.S. Mint.(Not the place that makes dead Elvis plates.)

I often pick up team ballcaps when they're giving them away for $5 @ LIDS.
The recent one has the TX Rangers logo in the Welcome To Las Vegas sign format. People actually stop me to say they thought it was a Vegas cap. The marketing design was correct. It got attention.

haha. "Los Angeles Hollywood's." I think the Hollywood Stars of the Pacific Coast League was the most area-appropriate team name in the history of LA sports.

I LOVE stopping by LIDS to see all of the previous marketing endeavors by the respective leagues. My favorite was when the MLB brought state pride into the equation. One of my favorite hats of all time is an old-school yellow and brown Padres hat with a big outline of California and a star on San Diego... $7. They capitalized on something everyone could identify with... needless to say, I got a ton of compliments on that hat on train rides to and from Padres games.

In the 80's, that San Diego Brown/Yellow cap looked like a diaper on the head.
Some color combos are just plain bad, like the Cleveland Browns.

Retro is always good.
San Diego, like the Astros, had fugly colors. Both have great retro dollar machines now.

I'm a realistic observer of the vast world that surrounds the Los Angeles Lakers. You can thank Nick Van Exel, Eddie Jones, Elden Campbell, Cedric Ceballos, and Vlade Divac for making that possible. The greatest person of all time is Francis Dayle "Chick" Hearn. There's no getting around that. Me? I'm eighteen years old and working my way to a journalism degree.
