DAAAMMMNNN!
Nov 05, 2006 | 6:47AM | report this

That's what the small party I attended shouted all night as we watched the Floyd Mayweather fight! I think I even saw Carlos Baldomir, his opponent, mouth that a couple times to himself!

Floyd was his usual flamboyant self-coming into the ring dressed as a Trojan. I actually choked on my Corona when I saw he was boxing in white leather shorts with pink trim! I must say however, the girl part of me kicked in and I thought the pink gloves were hot!!! He looked confident and ready to fight.

 Floyd Mayweather

Baldomir, on the other hand, looked defeated right from his trek into the ring. The look on his face was (again) ‘Damn, I gotta come in after that?’ Making matters worse for Baldomir, Floyd allegedly injured his right hand in the middle rounds which means Baldomir got his #### handed to him with one hand, literally!

All this was great. It lacked the pizzazz of a Tyson or Lewis fight but it was still good. The fact that Floyd completely dominated didn’t help the entertainment during the fight but man o man-Floyd lighting into Larry Merchant’s #### after the fight made my day! I have always thought that Larry Merchant was a horrible commentator and spent the better part of the evening, even the early bouts, complaining about his lackluster approach and utter disregard for the people listening to him. When Floyd basically told him to shut his mouth and let him do the fighting, I just sat back and had one of the men-folk bring me another beer! Damn!!

Fantasy Basketball...Yea or Nay?
Oct 29, 2006 | 8:39AM | report this

As an avid (and champion) fantasy football manager, I have come to understand and love the nuances of the fantasy game. Most ff leagues are 16 weeks, with games on two, maybe three days. I can handle that and I have excelled.

I have recently been asked to join a fantasy basketball league and I must say, I am a little intimidated. There are so many games, so many players I'm not sure I can keep up. i'm inclined to pick the Pistons starting 5, leave it at that and hope for the best!

Does anyone have any useful advice or tips on this subject? I would greatly appreciate them.

Let's Go Lions???
Oct 27, 2006 | 9:29PM | report this

Oh well, it was a helluva run, eh? Congratulations St. Louis!!

The Tigers tried to make it interesting (Thanks, Casey) but had too many hurdles to overcome, namely themselves. Now we can finally watch the Lions and not be distracted...does that make anyone else nauseous?? The RedWings are looking marginal at best and I will reserve judgement on the Pistons since their season has not officially started.

All hope is not lost as we may still have a possible champion in the Wolverines...GO BLUE.

By the way, don't forget that amidst all this vast postseason failure, Detroit did have a professional champion this year...leave it to the women to bring home the bacon!! GO SHOCK!!!

Beating Ourselves
Oct 27, 2006 | 8:47AM | report this

I remember watching the Pistons this past postseason and thinking "if I hear them say 'we've been here before...our backs against the wall...we play better, blah, blah, blah'-if I hear that one more time I am going to scream!" An awesome team that seemed to sel####estruct under the notion that they simply couldn't be too down. When they did fall, it was fast and ugly. But it wasn't so much that they were getting beat or losing a game, they were beating themselves. Error after error, bad passes, missed open shots. It was painful to watch-literally and figuratively.

That is exactly how I felt last night watch the Tigers play. Don't get me wrong, I know they are not nearly a veteran playoff team like the Pistons, but they have such similar qualities, it's hard for me not to draw comparisons to the teams and the way they related to their fans. Both hardworking, gritty, underestimated, undervalued but deeply appreciated and supported. Lately, they have shared a more disturbing stat-all offense or all defense. When one is working, they other is going straight to hell!

In Game 4 of the WS, the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but never looked comfortable. They looked like they expected to make a mistake somewhere-like it was inevitable that something would happen to cost them their lead. I’m not saying they expected to lose. But I am saying the looked like they expected to sel####estruct. A few weeks ago, the mantra for the team was that any Tiger could step up and be the hero. During this WS week, the new battle cry seems to be “which one of us will be the dog today!”

I love my Tigers just as I love my Pistons. But watching them implode on the field is like watching one of my children slash his skin to see if it really does bleed and how much it can hurt. This season has been so gravy!! The Olde English D was worn everywhere and not just by guy’s named “Derek” or “Damon”!! I believe that they can pull this series out. I really do. I just hope that the player do too.

A World Series Prayer for us all...
Oct 26, 2006 | 1:54PM | report this

Dear Baseball Gods...

Thank you for answering our other prayers this season. You know-winning record, make the playoffs. You outdid yourself with that Magglio homerun thing-it was almost too much! It was hot though (sorry)!! Anyway, maybe in the midst of all that excitment we forgot to ask that you bless FOX and ESPN with good coverage. I mean, it's not your fault they can't coordinate around your "40 days and 40 nights of rain" plan. But if you see fit to rain out tonight in St. Louis and/or this weekend in Detroit, would you please, please, please bless the sports-earth with a basketball brawl or T.O. "episode" so these poor networks can have something to discuss. It was so sad today to see ESPN showing post-season highlights for the PADRES! They definitely needed some prayer!

I know you are busy but if you could please grant us with a little good weather along with a "good" storyline (you're perfect but I gotta question that Kenny Rogers thing). I, along with the other few baseball fans still watching baseball would be greatly appreciative.

Oh and if we could get a win tonight that would be great. Oh, and a special prayer for Jim Leyland and his lungs. If for nothing else, keep the rain away for him!!

AMEN

Can We Please Move On???
Oct 24, 2006 | 11:07AM | report this

Detroit Tigers and Kenny Rogers. The names bring a mix of emotions and alot of commentary so I thought I'd add my take on it all.

1. Kenny Rogers is a good pitcher. He has had season after season in the "twilight" of his career with over 15 wins and this season was no exception. I don't believe for a second he would jeopardize his team with a palm full of pine-tar in the age of "FOX watchdogs". He pitched great with AND without the dirt. I hope we do take the series back to Detroit just to see him take the mound with the same whatever in the same spot on the same palm.

2. Brandon Inge said it best "we are just a good team-so deal with it." Yes we lost about 1,000 games a few years ago. Yes, we lost the division the last game of the season. And, yes, our team is filled with alot of talent but no "superstar." In the words of my kids, Big Whoop?

Are the Tigers supposed to be a sub-par team forever because it makes the huddled masses sleep better at night? Kenny Rogers gets the opportunity to pitch in, what may be, his last post-season appearances and we should be surprised because he doesn't suck now as he has in the past? Correct me if I'm wrong but don't we expect our professionals to IMPROVE? Why is it that everyone else can add to their team and get better but we, the Tigers, MUST remain the crappy, hapless Bad-News Bears of baseball?

Give me a break people. Let it go and buy some Ambien. The Tigers are good, they are for-real, they ARE NOT cheaters and they are here to stay. We true Tigers' fans are sorry you can't handle the truth but we are hopeful that you will stop trying to spoil this awesome experience for us.

Jumpin' Outta His Shoes!!!
Oct 21, 2006 | 1:15PM | report this

OK, take a look at this picure. You've all seen it. Magglio had hit his walk-off homerun and the Tigers are waiting for him at home plate. But someone has jumped right out of his shoes!! Do you see him? He is between Infante and Granderson. He has a jacket on but his outstretched arm is covering his face!! I can't tell who this is but I thought it was funny!!

OK, What the hell did he say???
Oct 15, 2006 | 10:52AM | report this

Although I saw the game on Friday (way to go Rogers) I could not hear it at a the barber shop with my sons. I am in the dark on this "Steve Lyons" issue. Can someone explain what he and/or Lou Pinella said?

Apologies Accepted HERE...!!!
Oct 08, 2006 | 8:33AM | report this

For all you nay-sayers, non-believers, bandwagon-jumpers, bad-mouthers, cynics, and just plain Tigers-bashers...

This is not a team that caught enough breaks to make it to the postseason. This is not a team who caught a down-trodden Yankees club on their last leg. THE TIGERS ARE A GOOD TEAM! They have worked hard for their success and they should be congratulated and given all the well-wishes they deserve.

I'm gonna stop typing so YOU can...!

Ok...What did I miss???
Aug 24, 2006 | 6:56PM | report this

I've been traveling and not able to watch the Tigers this week...what the heck happened? I left L.A. on Wednesday morning thinking they had things in hand. After a couple of quick road trips, I see they lost two. 10 to ZERO??? I'm waiting to see the highlights but that doesn't sound pretty?

I didn't worry last week when they were swept by Chicago but what is it about this team? They have the Tigers number. It reminds me of the old Chicago Bulls vs Pistons. It took the Bulls a long time to get over the Piston-mountain. And what is going on with Granderson's bat? His slump is worse than Shelton's.

OOHHHHH NNNOOOOOOO POLANCO!!!!
Aug 15, 2006 | 6:20PM | report this

Say it ain't so??? Not our most consistent player? I've seen those injuries before. It looked like he hyper-extended before he hit the ground which could only make matters worse!! I hope he is alright. I hate to see any player hurt especially ours.

On the flip side, this brings home an interesting point...we need another utility guy. Pudge at 2nd??!! This should be interesting...

Boy Am I Nervous!!!!
Aug 14, 2006 | 5:12PM | report this
After watching the Tigers beat themselves this weekend, this 5-0 lead makes me nervous. Have they truly shaken off what ever was collectively ailing them? I hope they win because I'm tired of all the negative press they've been receiving. Here's a question for you folks, how many MLB teams have NOT had a 5 game losing streak this season? I'm not being a smart ####...I really want to know! I thought that was an awesome stat, that the Tigers had not lost 5 straight until August. Are there any other teams in that club or is it a commom thing?

Is that #### DeVos in the Booth???!!!
Aug 08, 2006 | 5:44PM | report this
OMG!! I guess money CAN buy you anything including live air time on a Tigers game!! My political views aside, I think it is sickening! I can't even enjoy the game!! Between CB Buckner getting hit over and over (what is that about) and this pitiful DeVos commentary, I'm thinking of changing the channel!! I'm from West Michigan where the DeVos' dominate EVERYTHING...now my Tigers???! I'm just too through!

Detroit Tigers
Aug 07, 2006 | 5:20PM | report this

Wow! Liriano is out of the game against the Tigers!! Good thing, they are killing him! You know, I love my Detroit sports and typically, this is about the time to get hyped up for Lions season and what they MIGHT do. But how can you focus on anything but the Tigers' right now? I almost don't even care that football season starts in less than a month!!

Is this normal?
