Blue in Seattle
Feb 02, 2006 | 4:30PM | report this

The_Dan was kind enough to ask where I've been lately, afterall, this is the lead up to the best day of my life!

Unfortunately, I have some sad news... one of my adorable little cats died tragically last weekend. She was attacked by a roaming coyote (coyotes are a growing problem in Seattle area greenbelts) and killed. So, although I'm looking very forward to Sunday, I've been pretty blue this week.

I'm gearing up to write something tomorrow though, so stay tuned... :)

Was that the absinthe causing me to hallucinate or did my team actually embarass Carolina?
Jan 23, 2006 | 8:47AM | report this
Wait, that actually happened? That's right it did... I guess Steve Smith WAS shutdown, I guess Shaun Alexander DID play his A game, I guess Hasselbeck is a great QB, I guess Jake Delhomme isn't... all I want to know is, where were the mighty ligers yesterday? As someone who attended the game, I expected more of a fair fight... the Panthers simply didn't show up. It was a slaughter, hands down. Go Hawks!

Sunshine on Seattle. The panthers are just ligers in disguise.
Jan 17, 2006 | 2:46PM | report this

Literally. As I'm writing this, um, I mean "working", the sun has finally shown itself after 27.5 days straight of rain. I'm taking this as a sign from the gods and goddesses above that the Seahawks are anointed to win the game this Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

Today I'm not going to bore anyone with my general knowledge about the Hawks or why I believe they are better positioned to win. No, not this time folks. Today, thanks to EverythingSports' rant (http://blogs.foxsports.com/EverythingSports
)
about Seattle sportsfans being wishy washy and apathetic, I'm just going to be a crazy, illogical, retarded fan. We rule and we're going to kick some Carolina ####this week! WE'RE BACK IN (dark, somewhat navy-type) BLUE BABY, awwww yeah!

Face it, we're the chosen ones. The sun is a sign from god. Sort of like when Moses parted the RED (correction thanks to Carnac) Sea or when David brought down Goliath or when OJ was proven innocent. Miracles! Cool stuff! GO SEAHAWKS!

What's a "Panther" anyhow? Isn't that like a Liger?

Steelers take it, start the suicide watch on Vanderjact
Jan 15, 2006 | 2:03PM | report this

The past two days should go down in NFL history as some of the best football ever! Okay, maybe not NFL history, but definitely in my memory as a fan of the game. First, my beloved Seahawks win their first post season game since 1984. Then, the Broncos have an easy time destroying the Patriots dynasty with the win yesterday 27-13. Now, the Steelers kick the first-seeded Colts, along with the best quarterback in the NFL, out of the running?? What a great post season this is turning out to be! I have more faith than ever that anything can happen in the playoffs.

PS- I never made my pick for today's games, but I love when the favored team loses. Love it! Even though the game is already 2 minutes in, I'm calling Carolina to win against Chicago today. Final score: 27-10.

Seahawk skeptics -wipe that egg off your face
Jan 14, 2006 | 6:10PM | report this
What can I say except... I told you so! Despite several injuries, including star running back Shaun Alexander, and despite three turnovers and a worthy effort from the Redskins, the Hawks are victorious! I've been waiting for this day since I was eight years old! GO SEATTLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know what really grinds my gears? (Go Seattle!)
Jan 13, 2006 | 12:12AM | report this

People who doubt the Seahawks.

Yes they haven't won a playoff game since the 80's. Yes they've had an NFC West play schedule this season, which some say is "easier" than the NFC. Yes Hasselbeck hasn't always been consistent. Yes they haven't played a challenging game in weeks. But so what?? All I have to say to everyone who has doubts about Seattle in the playoffs is: shut your pie holes. Actually, all the doubters will see, come Saturday, what we're really made of. I said it before and I'll say it again, this is our year.

Ray Allen getting ejected.

What's with Ray Ray? He's typically our stand up player, our rock for the Sonics to rest on during troubled times. Now he's ejected for ffighting? Well, heck, maybe it has a little something to do with the pressure of not having an experienced and capable head coach at the helm in the middle of the season?! I don't think many of you could handle what the Sonics and specifically Ray Allen are shouldering these days. If you were the senior team leader you might just fight back this once. He's a stand up guy so quit giving him ####.

You know what really grinds my gears? Controversy.
Jan 09, 2006 | 10:52PM | report this

With all the controversy hitting this blogosphere lately, I thought I'd dedicate my latest grinds to a few of my favorite sports related controversies of all time. Enjoy!

A-rod leaving Seattle for the big bucks.

To this day, when whichever team is paying him the most these days, comes to play the Mariners, the fans boo, loudly. But can we blame Alex Rodriguez really? Would you cash in if you were offered kajillons of dollars? Of course you would! Maybe it's not what gets you the positive press, but it's business folks, there is no team loyalty unless you are an average player. PS- I still boo him.

Sammy Sosa is "uncorked".

As if allegations of steroid use weren't enough for poor Sammy. Then, he gets caught red-handed in another scandal when the umpires (correction thx to pup17) discover that his broken bat is full of cork! Sosa maintains that he used the cork bat by mistake, but come on now, what baseball player doesn't know which is which? I suppose you just "ran into" one of those needles full of illegal steroids too? Stop pretending to not really speak the language Sammy. This guy is no dummy.

Olympic gymnastics judging.

One of the few actual events shown during the Athens summer Olympics was men's gymnastics. That's because apparently the Americans purchased this event from the Olympic committee. American gymnast Paul Hamm was awarded the all-around gold medal only to have South Korean officials protest the scoring of their beloved Yang Tae Young, saying he was scored too low for the level of difficult performed in his routine. Then, during the high bar finals, Alex Nemov of Russia watched as his score changed following a full 10 minutes of booing from the crowd. He still finished fifth, Hamm won silver. I guess it pays to be an athlete from a dominant player in the world economy.

Mike Tyson fights dirty.

Nasty, dirty, prison-yard, belongs-in-jail-for-life, should-have-never-been-let-back-in-the-ring, once-married-to-Robin Givens, fighter, Mike Tyson. He’s an animal in the ring, literally. He got so into the fight with Evander Holyfield that I think he forgot where he was. Am I at Burger King or in the ring? Lol. But truly, who bites someone’s ear off? Put this man in a cage for good, please? I think this tops plagiarism any day.

OJ Simpson falls from grace.

Where were you when the verdict was read? I was in college in my dorm room with three friends waiting anxiously to hear the outcome of the “TRIAL OF THE CENTURY”. Well, like it or not, he’s a free man thanks to the late Johnny Cochran, but the once admired football star would never be the same. No more naked gun movies for you!

Today's official picks: Giants and Pittsburgh
Jan 08, 2006 | 10:13AM | report this

Panthers vs. Giants: The undeniable skills of Tiki Barber, Jeremy Shockey and a strong running game within the offensive line, plus the skills of Eli Manning gives the Giants the advantage today. I have faith in Eli Manning and his ability to pull through in the passing game. If he can pull through, using his defensive line to buy time in the pocket, I think the Giants are a shoe in today. Pick: Giants

Bengals vs. Steelers: Tough call given that each team is strong playing the game in very different ways. The Bengals rely offensively on speed and quick passes to gain yards, while the Steelers focus on strategic plays both running and passing. The Steelers are on a roll, however, with four wins in a row while the Bengals lost their last two games. I don't discount momentum like this for the Steelers and think that plus their experience in controlling the game will give them the upper hand today. Pick: Steelers

thesportsgurls' thoughts on the Worcester Classic: LIVE!
Jan 07, 2006 | 9:47PM | report this

This post was directly inspired by the excellent post by HiPlainsdrifter...

After the Pats killed Leftwich and the Jaguars today, I scanned the cable channels for something else to watch for the evening. I found my way to the OLN for my Saturday night entertainment. The Worcester Classic bull riding competition is on tonight, afterall, and what girl wouldn’t be thrilled to spend her Saturday night watching men conquer beasts? Below are some of my random thoughts while watching this live. Enjoy.

I hope these riders are actually tall.

You can’t really tell on television, but I personally hope these bull riders are at least 5’11. I mean, I’m nearly 6 foot with heels on, so I need a tall fella. Can you tell I’m single or what????

PBR sponsors rule.

Wrangler, Ford, Skoal, Dickies, Jack Daniels, Branson… this is my kind of show. The commercials are about trucks, jeans, farm equipment and tools. I was almost convinced a second ago that I need a waterproof flashlight. The priorities of this target audience couldn’t be more clear- drive, chew, work, and drink, in that order.

Cowboy hats are HOT!

Fan-freakin-tastic. I agree with HiPlains, if you’re allowed to wear a helmet, it should be shaped like a cowboy hat. Every man should own a cowboy hat.

How does one become a rodeo clown?

I recall seeing an interest piece last year about some of the most beloved and famous rodeo clowns in the PBR. They play a very important role in protecting the rider from a wild bull, risking major injury to save the rider. Do these folks make a decent living doing this I wonder? How does one choose this as their profession?

Where are the cheerleaders?

It would be hard to do, but you could have one cheerleader per rider. If I was riding a giant bull, I would want some encouragement.

Chaps are underrated in the world of fashion.

Or, perhaps, I don’t live it a part of the country where they are “mainstream”. I’m not seeing a lot of these here in Seattle. Maybe Issac Misrahi will come up with some for Target.

Bull riding tell all books.

Hey, if Paris Hilton's chihuahua can write a book...

Bull ratings.

This is a combination of how a bull bucks and how often. Each bull is then assigned a rating and the rider scores more points for seconds on a highly ranked bull. I think we could use this kind of “rating” system for dating.

Beyond the Bull.

All I have to say is- watch this show!  Professional bull riding is the fastest growing sport in America. TLC has a show on Tuesdays with an insider look at the sport and it's various nuances. Worth the 30 mins.

You know what really grinds my gears? (THE ORIGINAL)- THIS ONE'S FOR YOU LONGSHOT
Jan 07, 2006 | 10:09AM | report this

Stealing other people's format.

Only in a blogosphere is this acceptable. However, it's a classic tactic to steal from the best, and in this case I happen to take it as a compliment. Originality is underrated. It must be karma since I stole it from the Family Guy to begin with. Thanks Longshot, but next time try coming up with your own idea. :-)

MEEEEEOOOOWWWWWW!

Vince IS the PERFECT man- will he go for the draft or play another year?

Seriously Vince, I can buy your beer for you!
Jan 05, 2006 | 1:33PM | report this

Dearest Vince: I think we'd make a splendid pair... what, with YOU being an amazing football player and ME being a huge fan of you being an amazing football player, we'd be invincible! I could plant positive blogs and columns about you all over the web, and, well, you could just keep being 6'5 and fabulous.

Plus, guess what else, I'm over 21 (just by a little), so I can buy us beer! I also make a mean fried chicken and homemade gravy. Call me?

Matt Leinhart.

Admit it folks, he's choking. Yes, USC is ahead, but barely and not in their classic 2nd half form.

ABOUT ME

thesportsgurl
I'm just a girl that loves sports and writes a bit in my spare time. I am definitely a Seahawks, Mariners and Sonics fan, though I am also a fan of many teams outside of this fair city. The Detroit Pistons, SF Giants, NY Mets and more. I lean towards the NFL, NBA and MLB in terms of favorite topics but enjoy pretty much every sport. I have other blogs across the net all under some sportsgurl heading. You won't see me writing a column containing mostly stats, but I do believe I have some interesting perspectives to share and maybe a little humor.
