Well Billy Bean has got to be wondering what went wrong in the ALCS. His manager gets fired, and everybody has got to be wondering what happened? Ken wasn't even on the hot seat. He did what he had to do, and that was make the playoffs. I just am surprised that he gets fired after taking the Athletics to the ALCS, and the Yankees don't fired Joe Torre. Torre didn't win a playoff series, but he don't get fired. Something about this doesn't seem right? Well, they did have a great comeback in the 2nd half of the season. But it seemed like something bad was about to happen. Getting swept by Detroit was totally unexpected! Well maybe they should bring Art Howe back or something. But this is clearly a huge setback for Oakland. By the way, Oakland is not a good sports town and that just prove it. Is there anybody that wants to prove me wrong, go ahead!!!
If you look at what went on with Macha and Beane last year, where Macha walked away from contract negotiations to persue the Pirate job and the way Beane responded this is not all that shocking.
Going back to what he said in Moneyball, Beane does not hold managers in high regard and will, at times, manage the game from behind the scenes. Ideally I would like this smug, arrogant, SOB to put his reputation as a "genius" on the line by taking on the role of manager, but I'm sure instead he'll find another puppet like Art Howe, a manager with no ability to manage the game who will defer to Beane.
Cheapseats ..... Billy Beane says the reason behind Macha's firing was that there was a disconnect between the players and the coach. Well from where I sit I don't think that's the case as there was more of a disconnect between the batters on the A's team not being able to connect with the pitches of the Tigers' pitchers. That should be Beane's major cause for concern. The fact that Thomas also played poorly in the ALCS should've pointed to that fact also. Instead of swinging for the fences the A's should've played some small ball as well, as timely hitting in those sort of circumstances will almost certainly lead to bigger and better things. That's the way the Tigers played the game and it didn't seem to hurt them now did it ?
