Born with a Silver Video Tape in his mouth
Apr 23, 2008 | 1:52PM | report this

Ok now that Matt Walsh has agreed to show the NFL his collection of Patriots memorabielia it's time to let the mind wander and try and decifer the advantages to taping your opponent. Also, lets not be crazy and think that the Patriots would have lost every game they played without the "tapes". They are still a good team, a very good team. I am not sold that they would have won a Super Bowl without that knowledge or "video enhancements" but they would have still been a great team... now with that being said, here is why the tapes were so important, to the development of Tom Brady from a inexperienced QB to a World Class QB.

(IF THE Tapes are tapes of opposing defenses in practise and signals during a game)

1. the time in which Matt Walsh was employed 1997-2003 was the time period where Brady was inexpereinced young QB and the extra video of the defenses practise would allow him the oppurtunity to see exactly what he was going to see in a game, slowed down. Also the chance for the coaching staff to put him through similated circumstances in practise, and use this to incorporate the blocking schemes to protect him the best.

2. Watching video is key for a young QB, in high school, college, arena, canada and the NFL, but that's tape of game photage against a different team. Practise tapes would help that much more because thats the plan that team plans on implicating that week against you. It's one thing to go and watch game tape, and slow it down to see the nuances of each play, it's completely different to watch a tape of the team slowed down to learn the nuances of each play. If your watching them learn, it's usually easier to learn and decifer the differences.

3. If the taped the signals during a game, at halftime the signals would already have been disected thru the tapes and the actual game photage. It would not be hard to:
a see the signal
b relay to off coordinator
c call play and tell Brady what formation the defense will be in.
in that a young QB, would already know for certain what the team was gonna do. With that confidence and knowledge he shouldnt have had much problem learning to use his abilitys to find the weaknesses in th defense.

4. having the videotape of the weeks practise will almost always reveal any tricks or secret plays the opposition is thinking about running that week.  Therefore eliminating the element of suprise and wonder for a young Qb.

("love the hat, tom")

Now to brign this all together, the two most important things for a young QB are the gameplan and his confidence. Almost every QB who makes the NFL can throw the ball, but it takes the decision making you learn in your gameplan and the confidence in yourself, your abilitys and the play call to make it work on the field. His confidence was heightened through "video enhancements" therefore allowing him to concentrate on the other fascets of Quarterbacking in the National Football League.

The world knew that New England would have a good defense when Belicheck was hired, Belicheck is a defensive genius he has been his whole career (if you dont believe me watch the tape of Super Bowl 25) their offense however was a question mark. With these advantages as a young QB Brady's oppurtunity to truly understand the postition and reach the highest level of sucess were greatly increased, almost made simple. But his growth as a Qb can not soley be placed on "enhancements" he still had to do it every week, and take these advantages and in combination with his own abilitys still craft that into becoming a world class QB, because that is what he is a world class QB. He may go down as the greatest QB ever... but does he go down as with an asterisk or not is the question.

two things to note before responding...

1. I still believe Tom Brady would have been a good QB in this league, i thought so when he was at Michigan i couldnt believe that Drew Henson kept gettting snaps over him.

2. THIS is all being said IF the Patriots are guilty of taping practises, and signals.

(if it comes out that the didnt do this the, to quote HHH then "he's that damn good")

TheBest,

Well written, but none of this theories are new to me. Unfortunately, videotaping in general has never been against the rules. The Pats simply videotaped from a restricted area. I do not believe for a single minute that there is one QB in the modern era of football that has not been given significant material that dissects plays and concentrates on hand signals. These are tired arguements in my opinion and last years dominance should is indicative of that.

As for the proposed walk through taping, several key figures have recently pointed out there was nothing to tape at the Rams session (they were present for the event). It mainly consisted of stretching, joking around and relaxing before the big game. No "trick plays" to learn from that.

I grow tired of folks trying to reverse seven years of solid play because of a simples rules violation. One that would have been completely legal (and is common practice) from other areas of a stadium.

Also, using your logic, Matt Walsh would also have benifitted Drew Bledsoe during his tenure with the organization. No such luck.

Bottom line is this has been blown way out of proportion from day 1. As far as I'm concerned, the $750,000 fine and loss of a 1st round pick should cover the Pats for any "misdeeds" that may be unearthed in this ongoing investigation.

Because if this past season proved nothing else, it was that BB was able to lead a group of aging overachievers to the best and most dominant regulars season in the history of the game. Minus the videotaping which most certainly had to be th

Sorry for some of the typos.

Also, my last sentence read.

Minus the videotaping which most would have you believe was the reason for their past success.

Didn't realize you are a Bills fan. That must fuel some of your animosity (notice how I said some...I am not discounting your logic).

Oh i understand completely... the logic would or should have helped Bledsoe...

but the difference in that is, i dont believe that Brady would have even known their was cheating going on. He would have just been doing his job, and thats getting as prepared as he possibly can. Again this was just to show that if they cheated the one person would really have benefited was Brady.
Their recent sucess though, had nothing to do with taping (unless you consider Brady's development) their recent sucess is due to Brady maturity and the level of talent the team has acquired. I have loved Wes Welker since he was in high school, we tried to recruit him but didnt work out that well. Then he went to Tech... He is a Steve Tasker clone (he even looks like him) and he proved that this year. Randy Moss... do i even need to comment on his talent or greatness... no i dotn think so he's a "G". And every good QB needs a Ben Watson or someone like him.

hey the Pats are a super bowl contender year in year out. And well deserving.

Thebest,

I am sure we both agree this mess gets cleaned up one way or another. Whatever team we root for, we are both NFL fans, and the integrity of the sport we love must be protected.

Great job with your first blog! Keep me posted on any new work!

Best,

Everybody is now familiar with the questions surrounding the hasty disposal of the tapes in question. One possible reason for this, however, has never been explored to the best of my knowledge...and for good reason.

Patriots fans (almost exclusively since everybody hates the guy at the top and will look for any excuse to chop them down) have always maintained this type of activity is commonplace in the NFL (and regardless of the fact non Patriots fans contend we are using the "everybody else does it" excuse, it is a valid statement). I FIRMLY believe the NFL and its coaches were well aware of this. I think most were shocked that Mangini so openly confronted the Patriots about this taping, and Goodell most likely said to himself, behind closed doors,

"Mangini, what the beep were you thinking?!?!? You have opened Pandoras box and the NFL will likely suffer because of it"

Yes, I am suggesting Goodell acted in haste because he wanted to stop this train before it gained speed and caused more damage to the league. Arlen Specters late involvement (immediately before the Super Bowl, coincidentally) was exactly what Goodell was worried about, as the Anti-trust agreement in place with the NFL could be jeopardized.

This is all very compelling to me, especially since football has always been survival of the fittest and an NFL coaches job depends on what he has done for his team today.

i think your right to a point on Goodell, though i do believe he welcomed this contraversy, to send a message. But i also believe that he believed destroying the tapes would aleviate the possibility of congress getting involved.
Behind the scenes he's probably cursing Matt Walsh all day long. And secretly i think he wants Walsh to have nothing. for the same reason you stated.

i never thought of Belichecks ability to be the "scapegoat"... it kinda makes sense. Though you say he's not in the fraternity of NFL coaches, that i disagree with... he was a charter member of the fraternity, only to choose to leave the "fraternity" due to his own personality and nature.

i also dont believe that "every team does it", but i refuse to believe that noone else did it. Belicheck a genius but he alone didnt think of this, that im sure of. But he got caught.

but like you said i cant wait til this is over, and we can argue about on the feild evaluations. Like when the Bills upset the Patriots on the last week of the season to make the playoffs. ; )

and that's not the first blog i have a few more... most are humorous... im kinda new at it though. Im not allowed to write about my team or even mention who i work for, so it takes away from most of the things im thinking. especially come july when practise starts.
