I guess you really are nothing more than a Stupid Jock!
Aug 23, 2007 | 8:57AM | report this

Another one bites the dust.. another bites the dust.. yeah another one’s gone another one’s done another one bites the dust.

Another day, another Vick post right, wrong. I am tired of talking about Vick, I have already spoken my peace about his situation. The focus of this post is the pro athletes speaking up in support of Vick and the logic they use.

* Chris Samuels: gets a bye. All he said, “You can't accuse this man of something and go ahead and throw the book at him right now. He's got to be convicted first. I don't think that's fair." However,  it needs to be mentioned that he hasn’t opened his mouth since the plea.

1. Clinton Portis: the O.G. famous quote, “It’s his property, it’s his dog. If that’s what he wants to do, do it.”/ ”…I think people should mind their own business.”

Alma Mater- University of Miami

2. Joe Horn:    "If Michael Vick steps through that gate at any time, I'm going to be there waiting for him with open arms," Horn said. "Not just because of his athletic ability, but because he's a good person.”

Apparently, Horn does not know or care for the severity of the crimes. Listen, Joe Horn is an attention seeking NFL diva who lives by the “all press is good press” mantra. Apparently Vick is a good person because he  said hi to Joe Horn’s( 3rd person) little boy, and because he got Joe Horn the damn ball at a Pro Bowl a few years back. Alma Mater- Itawamba (MS) JC 3. Roy Jones Jr. take 1:  “Fighting animals don’t necessarily get mistreated. They get treated just the way I get treated.”

4. Stephon Marbury: “dogfighting is a sport … just behind close doors” He’s right when he talks about hunting deer and other game (I oppose hunting animals for “sport”) Here is a prime example of someone who apparently grew up with the idea that dog fighting was okay either through movies, music videos and maybe even exposure. People would call this exposure to the “thug” culture (I am not calling Starbury a thug) but let’s not forget that the father of the thug culture is the Scarface dillusion.

Alma Mater- Georgia Tech

4. Roy Jones Jr. take 2: “People like to see bad things… People are rooting against a man over an animal, kind of like how people were asked to choose between a killer and Jesus Christ.”/ “Let’s not let a dog(divide us).” He also entertained the idea that Vick was doing this so that the co-defendants could “make a living” and that they turned on Vick when “they weren’t making as much as they thought they would.”

Nothing more than a fast talking back tracking stupid jock concerned more with promoting his fight with Tito (Go “Tito”) and dancing around the cockfighting issues swirling around him.

I guess the stereotype of the stupid jock is an accurate one after all.  What did these guys get out of their college level Square dancing course, or History of Fast Food course? Didn’t they learn anything? What does this say about the level of brain power in pro sports?

Certainly, I am disappointed that pro athletes really are this stupid but I am upset that there is little or no voice of opposition to tell me otherwise. I want to see an athlete step up and say that Vick was wrong; step up and say Vick deserves what he gets. Jim Brown and Mark Schelereth (sp. check) didn’t quite get there so I am calling out all current and former athletes black, white, brown , yellow… to step up  and be heard.  Where is Charles Barkley, Tony Gonzalez, Tori Hunter, Bret Favre…?  Bill Walton, Hank Aaron, Emmitt Smith…? The list goes on and on. Are they afraid of speaking up against a fellow Falcon, football player, black athlete, Va tech alumn? Speak up or forever remain a stupid jock!

He still got game?
May 31, 2007 | 9:52AM | report this

With all this talk of trades and lack of help for stars like Kobe, Garnett and Pierce I got to thinking about a lot of solid NBA players who aren’t being allowed to shine. Maybe, I am delusional. Maybe these guys really can’t run anymore. So I thought it would be fun to run down a list of players in the league who were once big time players and are now bench players. Do you guys think they can still run and to what degree? Could they be superstars, starters, solid bench guys or are they just roster filler?

So here we go.

Antonio McDyess- Could still be a solid top 10 big. I think he should be a starter. Would be a good fit in Lakers/ Celtics and is much cheaper than J. O’Neil with just as much game.

Jerry Stackhouse- I think this guy can still carry a team more so now than earlier in his career because of maturity. He should def. be starting.

Jalen Rose- Still had a very good season a couple of years ago. Could probably be a star on a bad team, a starter on a good team and a sixth man on a great team. Bottom line, this guy should be on the floor more than he has been the last couple of seasons.

Derek Anderson- This guy has solid role player written all over him. Athletic, can shoot, good basketball I.Q., and championship experience… Put him in Min. with Garnett and use some of those surplus young shooting guards as trade filler.

Bonzi Wells- Not great but he can be used while he still has something left in his legs. A lot of young guys have his game but Bonzi has playoff experience (was part of a pretty good Portland team) which would make him a solid role player. Put him in Cleveland off the bench.

Damon Stoudamire- Can he still score like he used to? Probably not? Could he be a starter somewhere? I think so.

Eddie Jones- This is the guy Kobe needs. This is the guy Kobe should want, a sharp shooter who can handle the rock and will defer to Ms. Kobe.

Mike James- Playing time will be cut significantly next season (Randy Foye) so where does he go. Can he still start for a team or is he just a b.u. pg now?

Steve Francis- He can put the ball in the bucket. Can he help anyone? Might be able to play with Garnett (Starburry did it). How about Indiana? Francis- O’Neil / Sarburry- Garnett?

Malik Rose – not a star I know but shouldn’t he be playing more than 12 min. a game. Any playoff team that did not win this season should be looking at this guy. He is one of those difference makers.

Jim Jackson- This guy isn’t even in the league right now! WTF! The guy was playing great for the Rockets some how ends up on the Lakers bench last season and is now gone. What? This guy could have def. helped Ms. Kobe that year. This guy can still ball and be solid role player. Stars get you to playoffs but role players win championships. All playoff teams should be watching this guy.

Grant Hill- In the last season of his contract so now he is a very good starting SF or sixth man for the price. Def. not worth the money before but now a very good bargain. Put him alongside Ms. Kobe or Pierce and what do you get? The guy is still putting up good solid #’s.

Joe Smith- I happen to think this guy is a better PF than people give him credit for. Give him playing time and the #’s will come. He is disciplined and not looking to be the star. Is a 15ppg. 8 rpg. player if given the opportunity.

Andre Miller- Will a contender please pick this guy up? A star he is not, but he is a top PG who can turn a playoff team into a championship contender.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim- Another victim of split playing time the last few years (Randolph, Kenny Thomas/ C. Williamson) This guy is still a 20 ppg. 9 rpg. player. Sac. Needs to give this guy more playing time or let him go elsewhere.

I know what you guys are thinking, “This guy thinks every big is a top PF.”

Honestly, I think there are 3 types of players:

1. Guys who perform their best as starters with sig. playing time

2. Guys who can make a diff. coming off the bench and splitting time.

3. Guys who can do both.

I rank Abdur-Rahim and Joe Smith ahead of guys like Bargnani, Kwame Brown, Etan Thomas/ Jarvis Hayes, Chris Wilcox, Sean May, Marvin Williams…

And alongside guys like Okafor, Al Jefferson

Why the rush to develop the young guys? Let the veterans do their thing because they can still ball. Let the young guys sit and learn because they aren’t better just more athletic. A lot of these guys bring B-ball I.Q. to the table which more times thann not prevails over athleticism.

So what do you guys think?

The NFL needs to drop a load!!!
May 21, 2007 | 11:05PM | report this

Warning!!! This is a rant!

I'm tired of this $#!T! These guys need to be held accountable for their actions. Some say that suspension is too much. Too much???
Flip that!!!  Ban Vick, Portis, Tank Johnson, Pacman, Chris Henry and company for life.

There is too much #### in pro sports today and it's time to dump the load.

What? Too extreme? How about this, offer the teams a guaranteed top 5 pick or #1 pick  (or equivalent ex. Chris Henry) to get rid of this waste. I'm sure the Skins' would much rather have an Adrian Peterson for a Clinton Portis. The Falcons would easily take the next Vince Young over the current Vick.

     >

It's time for us fans to say enough is enough. Is winning at all cost the type of society that we have become? These are sports/ games so what if our team doesn't win. Heck,  unless you’re a Patriots or Colts fan they don't win anyway.

Ahh, who am I kidding? We are a society of big talk and little action.  We won’t even refrain from drafting Portis or Vick in order to win our measly little fantasy league let alone call for real action.

As for the feeble minded blow-hard who will inevitably play the “Get your priorities straight card: there are soldiers dying, homeless, sick, hungry…” well, dog fighting is a big deal! Animal cruelty is a big deal! Oh, and by the way I understand there are issues of greater importance but… Where does it say that we need  to address these issues one at a time? Ever heard of multi-tasking?

I’m offended by the ignorant forms of justification some of these sports fanatic low-life bloggers come up with. I am offended and disappointed in the lack of class, lack of intelligence, and lack of open-mindedness.  You want truth? Here is truth! Face it!

Little more "About Me"
May 07, 2007 | 1:21PM | report this

Well, I have been on this thing and Fox message boards since football season. I post a comment every once in a while. Lately it seems like I have been stepping on some toes and in turn, am getting called out. Some people want to know more about me so this is for them and anybody else who is interested.

I'm 23 and am finishing up my B.F.A. in Art all-level education. I like the arts because you can pretty much teach what and how you want to teach. There is no standardized test looming over you (This is not to say that I impose my views on my students). I like the Arts because you can pretty much incorporate the other contents. What better way to touch on history than by looking at the art that was being created around the world at that time. Anyway, because of limited openings in the Arts I plan on challenging the E.C.-4, Kines/health, and Sp. Ed. tests.

I was born and raised in south texas where we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, Dia de los Muertos, and Charros Day. I was greatly influenced by my grandparents on my mom's side; they were hardworking resident aliens from Mexico. My Grandpa worked for the city all day and then did odd jobs in the evening like cleaning pools, mowing yards, and trimming trees. I still remember his hands and posture (from carrying heavy bags of any and everything over his shoulder all those years). Everyday I strive to be the kind of man he was.

My last name is French and is unusual in these parts. If you see another name like it, then we are probably related in some way. It (the last name) came from my dad's dad. He served in the Korean War and decided to come to the Valley afterwards. Most of his family are/were in New Hampshire. Rumor has it that they wanted nothing to do with us ( I can't confirm or deny that). My grandfather is anglo, and I just happen to have an anglo last name but I grew up the same way as any other working class hispanic kid in these parts.

On that note, I am working on a series of artworks that are exploring the culture clash I experienced as a hispanic "gringo" in south Texas. I also plan on adding on my grandfathers' last name (yes it's hispanic) so that the name can continue. They had 2 girls and 1 boy and my Uncle probably won't be having any kids.

Let's see quick fact time (the juicy stuff):

I am not religious. I am indifferent to the display or censorship of religion in sport, just don't try to jamb it down my throat or think that I am inferior to you because I am not "whole"

I beleive in the seperation between church and state. There is a very fine line in this issue and the state has a responsibility to the entire nation not just the majority.

I am pro choice but I do feel it is important for individuals to see the irreversible results of their actions before making a choice.

Immigration, I support the plight of the immigrant worker. The one that wants to work hard for a decent living but has no idea how to do it the legal way.  The legal process is complicated enough to begin with what with all the paper work and fees and going back and forth from one office to another. Now throw in a bunch of self-righteous blow-hards pushing them around at every corner.vI'll write more about it later.

Cruelty to animals is a serious issue to me. Specifically domestic animals. No, I am not in PETA because they are of the mold of all or nothing and I just don't agree with everything they stand for. I don't preach vegetarianism but I do feel that the inhumane treatment of animals processed for food needs to be addressed.

I guess that is all for now. I will go into more detail of my view on these issues in later blogs.

ABOUT ME

texasbagger
Let's see I love athletic competition: seeing, doing and talking/blogg
ing about it. I am not as serious about it as I used to be. I'm not going to be one of these cheese and whine bloggers who makes excuses after a tough loss and looses his/ her lid. I will admit, I find myself cheering against certain athletes/ sports figures just as much as I cheer for my favorite athletes. Maybe I will right a blog about later. I try and stay away from political posts because they always end in a stale-mate. However, sometimes I do indulge in the occasional social political rant. Keep an open-mind we will get along just fine. Lastly Track and Field is my fav. sport, I also like WSM and MMA (except IFL that's a joke).
