Now that they have what looks like a capable offense, they lack anything that even resembles a defense. I guess they can spend the next 7 years building that now.
For years, we have all had to sit here while the media force-fed us the Notre Dame hype. We had to watch last year as they entered the season ranked #2 in the country, despite beating only two teams with winning records the previous year-- Michigan who ended a terrible year at 7-5, and Navy who ended the year 8-4. The rest of the teams they beat had losing records.
Then we had to sit here and watch as they were invited to yet another BCS bowl game that they had NO business being in, but the big whigs made it happen anyway because Notre Dame "fills the seats". Wow- what a great reason to be invited to play in one of college football's most prized bowl games, you "fill the seats". As opposed to say maybe, actually earning the right to be there, which Notre Dame did not. But at least we got to enjoy watching the Irish get thoroughly dismantled for the third time.
At least this is one year, in which we don't have to hear the media spin their darling little has-been, Notre Dame, into a national contender. I don't have to listen to the annoying Irish fans tell me how Notre Dame is "Americas team" and that Brady Quinn is going to win the Heisman. After the past two years, nobody deserves to go 0-8 more than Notre Dame.
Who is the better QB, you ask? Who will lead their team to victory on September 15th, you ask? Well if you know anything about college football then the answer is easy- Mallett!!
Here is why- the hype surrounding Jimmy Clausen is as fake as the hype surrounding Notre Dame the two previous seasons. In fact, the only reason Clausen was ranked #1 in his entire recruiting class (with Mallet just 3 spots behind) is because he chose Notre Dame.
As we all know, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Clausen's two brothers were also highly touted quarterbacks coming out of high school- both turned out to be monumental busts who, couldn't even cut it on the college level and never even sniffed a chance to play in the NFL.
So how could Jimmy be so overrated? Well for starters, he played in a cream puff conference in high school. I mean come on, the kid threw like 50+ touchdowns and less than 10 interceptions as a sophomore. But maybe thats because he actually should have been a senior- I did mention that Clausens father held him back 2 YEARS, right? Apparantly so that Clausen would have 2 extra years of maturity and developement over his competition. Weird? To say the least.
Now on to Mallett- WOW. I almost don't even have to say anything else! A five-star 6'7", 240 pound pro style quarterback. A Peyton Manning prototype. Ranked the #4 recruit in his entire class. Can almost effortlessly throw a 70 yard bomb, as we all saw when he got his first chance to start against Oregon. A native of that football factory they call Texas. This guy has a monster arm and unlimited potential. His accuracy could use a slight tune-up, but that will come with time and experience. And since he decided to attend QB University, he is all but guarenteed a future spot on an NFL roster. Michigan really hit the jackpot with this magnificent football specimen.
Mallett has all the tools, and all the weapons around him- a decent O-line with one of the best in Jake Long, a great passionate Runningback in Mike Hart, outstanding recievers in "Super Mario" Manningham and Adrian Arrington. Clausen has, well, a tight end? Maybe? Oh and an "offensive genius" in Charlie Weis! Who by the way, uh, has yet to score an offensive touchdown yet this season. Ouch.
Well I leave the final decision to you. Who would YOU want under center for your team? A 6'7" 240 pound Peyton Manning clone, or, a kid 2 years older than he should be, who shows up at the college football Hall of Fame in a stretch Hummer and predicts a 4-0 record against USC and 4 National Championships?
