My feelings regarding the subjectivity of officiating in all major sports go way back. Professional sports are no longer about what really happens, but what those in control want to happen. I am a fan of neither the New England Patriots or the Baltimore Ravens, however the decision of the instant replay judge in determining the final touchdown for the Patriots, thus preserving their 'perfect season' is as appauling as subjective strike zones and the automatic out on the bases; and the sudden change in what constitutes a foul during the basketball playoffs (e.g. Labron James getting hacked in his last second drive to the basket last season).
Any objective viewer of the replays last night on television could clearly see that the Patriot receiver had NOT secured the ball before stepping out of bounds in the end zone.
Having not joined in that endeavor, I can only surmise what occurred. I gave up on most professional sports years ago much to my dismay. Too bad, because I loved them as a kid.
Now I spend my time trying to fight the effect of this kind of mentality on the younger amateurs; probalby a lost cause already. I may sound somewhat cynical... but I'm truly perplexed.
I've learned, played and coached various sports for almost 5 decades now and have watched the changes in rules and fair play be molded into something that only serves the almighty dollar.
I've competed at youth, high school and college levels in various sports including: baseball, football, basketball, hockey, golf, and soccer; and have long enjoyed social tennis, softball and skiing.
I'm married with kids, and have given up on ever seeing the 'good old days' where we fessed up to our own fouls and had reason to respect the officials.
