Ohio State and Michigan getting worse
Nov 24, 2006 | 2:42PM | report this
This post doesn't have to be long.  Texas lost again today.   Let's go over Ohio State's impressive wins now...I'll say it again, there is no way to defend that Ohio State is the best team in the country, only an unfounded opinion can defend that idea.  Let's see if I can get some unbiased, non Michigan/Ohio State fan to give me an intelligent response.

Ohio State is undefeated. My post says that they aren't as good as everyone thinks. They most obviously deserve their number 1 ranking without question. I just want an intelligent, factual defense of that ranking. So you can get off the floor now.

First of all I am going to start off by saying: I'm a State fan. I 2will not root for either of these teams unless they meet in the Championship game (which I doubt).

Both teams have had relative easy schedules. The Big Ten was soft this year, and both teams only had 2, 3 at the most quality opponents. They are--
OSU: UM, Texas, Iowa
UM: ND, Wis, and Iowa
Remember that you shouldn't go by rankings now, otherwise Iowa is off the list, you go by when they were playing them. Iowa was Ranked I believe 11th at the time of the OSU game, after those two games they were unranked though. ND and Texas were #2 at the time. Wisconsin was rolling at the time when UM was playing them. And obviously OSU beat UM. So what I am trying to say from all of this is....OSU deserves #1 no matter what you or anyone else says.

sportthink--you completely contradict yourself. in the post you say:

"there is no way to defend that ohio state is the best team in the country, only an unfounded opinion can defend that idea"

then in your comment you say:

"they(ohio state)obviously deserve their number one ranking"

make up your mind.

and if the buckeyes aren't the best team in the country please tell us who is. and back it up with a "factual defense".

Ohio State is the luckiest team this year. I'm not saying they aren't good, but boy did things turn out well for them this year.

There is no dought that Ohio state deserves the #1 spot, but give Michigan another shot at them on a neutral field and the outcome might be different. xrooster you said it best when sportthink contradicted himself. No one deserves to play for a national title when you get beat by an UNRANKED team, that's right USC should maybe be ranked 5th at best.

Okay let me put it this way. Ohio State is undefeated; of the majors, they are the only one that deserves to be number one. There is no team worth arguing for otherwise. What I am saying is what makes them so good that they should be given the national championship today as some writers and bloggers have been saying. Like I figured, there would be no one able to defend that Ohio State is head and shoulders above everyone else in the country. Ohio State's schedule was weak. Their win against Michigan isn't as impressive as once thought. They would probably have a loss or two if they played in either the Pac 10, the SEC, the ACC, or the Big East.

X you haven't made point about Ohio State, just a critique of what I said and how I said it.

My question again, how do you defend the fact that OSU deserves a 1.000 BCS ranking.

Here's a question to you folks. I apologize for my ignorance...is it possible for a team to lose the natinonal championship game and still finish the season ranked number 1 in the BCS?

Ohio State is number 1 because they beat every team they played, including the number 2 team (actually, they technically beat the number 2 team twice because Texas was number 2 when they played). I'm tired of hearing about how they didn't play anyone. First of all, none of these teams plays anyone. They all throw cupcakes into their schedules. So, you can't hold that against one team and not the others. Secondly, you can't blame Ohio State for their schedule. They scheduled teams like Penn State, Iowa, etc. thinking that they would be good teams. Penn State won the Big Ten last year. Iowa is usually up there. This year, that happened to not be the case. What is Ohio State supposed to do? Try to reschedule those games mid-season with different opponents? I don't think so. Ohio State beat every team they faced. They are the only BCS-conference team to do that. That's why they are number 1.

I'm glad I finally got someone to put it that way, and if you do put it that way Boise State desereves to be number 1. You can't blame them for their schedule, right. I hate it when all you people only see it this situation from the high ground. Look at it evenly and plainly.

And yes rooster it is possible to be ranked number one and not be the best team in the country. It happens every year in all the sports. A team is undefeated for variuos reasons, and at the end, when everything plays out, they aren't number 1 or the best. Certainly nothing contradicting about that.

Well, you are the only person I've heard even attempt to say that Ohio State doesn't deserve number 1. Who's looking at this from their high and mighty perch?

Who do you think deserves to be number one? Because, I'm thinking that you could find a way to argue against any team being at number one. Maybe we should just do away with number one and let everyone play for second.

No. You're assuming that I have some kind of problem with you arguing for Boise State at number 1. I really don't care what you argue. It doesn't really matter what you argue.

What makes more sense? You arguing that Boise State should be number one, or the coaches, sportswriters and computers determining that Ohio State should be number one?

By the way, thanks for the cheap insult. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

quoting jgrace - "you can't blame Ohio State for their schedule. They scheduled teams like Penn State, Iowa, etc. thinking that they would be good teams"

Ummm... those are BIG TEN teams. That schedule is set by the conference, not Ohio State.

Look, USC scheduled two teams who are heading to the SEC & Big XII title games. The only other top ~30 team to even *schedule* one of those 4 is also from the Pac-10 (Oregon). If you want to argue that Ohio State didn't know Texas would start sucking wind that's fine.

I can argue USC is the best team in the country IF they beat Notre Dame convincingly. Otherwise, Ohio State is still the #1 ranked team because regardless of the opposition they still won a BCS conference and went undefeated. No other team in the country has done that. Is USC better? Possibly. Florida isn't, no one in the Big Ten is (although I would've liked to see Wisconsin get a crack) and certainly the ACC and Big XII are out too.

Who does that leave?

USC vs. Ohio State for all the marbles. Don't screw it up Irish!

well I am not un-biased, but dare tell me who in the nation has the offensive weapons at all positions that OSU has? They may not have the best defense, but they make stops when they have to.

The Trojans are the only other team that can make a case. And if all holds true to form, we will see that play out

jgrace_12
Nov 25, 2006
4:33 PM
Norcal - Thanks for clearing that up. My point was that Ohio State can only play the games that are on their schedule. They can't change them mid-season, and they can't magically make the teams better to satisfy anybody else. Is it really important that the Big Ten schedules those games? What is the point of adding that?

Regardless of who scheduled the games, they were scheduled that way because they were thought to be competitive games against two really good teams. That was the point. The point was not to argue about who scheduled the games. Thanks for seeing the point.

sportthink--i asked you twice who you think the #1 team in the country is and you are yet to answer that question. and please don't say boise state. if you truly believe that then you have zero credibility.

secondly i don't have to argue, defend or make a point about OSU being the best team in the country. the buckeyes play has proved who is #1 all season long. preseason #1. wire to wire, wearing a big block O bullseye on their backs and no team has been able to knock them off.

bring on whomever you want. we'll see you in glendale.

The bottom line to all this #### is a 8 to 4 to 2 team playoff system. Teams schedule opponents five years in advance and have no way of knowing if their opponents will remain strong five years from now.

So you cut back the number of regular season games to 9, then you add the three game playoff and they are still playing only 12 games. Only way to know for sure. But even then, that won't happen because it would cost teams a home game revenue somewhere.

Hmmm...Boise St.

Let's see. Who handed USC its one loss this year? Oregon St. And who smoked Oregon St 42-14 earlier this year? ...yup...Boise St.

I'd say that constitutes an arguement.

As for Ohio St...beating a team by 3pts (Michigan) on home turf when your fans outnumber opponent fans nearly 100 to 1 doesn't do much to demonstrate they are a better team.

wintertyme--sweet! bring on boise state. can't wait to see the vegas line on that game.

and enough with the home field advantage ####.
it's too funny the wolverines were gifted 10 points in the third quarter on horrible turnovers. and the michigan scored 8 points with 2 minutes left in the game with the buckeyes playing prevent. spin it anyway you like. sounds to me like reality is a tough pill to #### for some.

see you in glendale.

I never ever said I had another team that you could argue deserves to be number 1 in the polls. The way it is set up, Ohio State is the obvious choice. I am trying to hear the opinions of people who agree that despite their record, Ohio State is not the best team in the country. It is a feel thing for me. Having watched many college games, it just feels like Ohio State is not the best team. I am comparing games I have watched on Television.

Who would you rather have;

Smith/Booty
OSU recievers/USC recievers
Gable/Pittman

With Gable USC is so much better, he is a legit number one back. Where was he earlier in the year?
I'd take Carrol and the Trojans ten times out of ten. They are so much more athletic. Ohio State will have a hard time keeping up with that athleticsm. Troy Smith is no Vince Young. The Bucks don't have a chance in that game, plus it might be too hot for them in AZ.

Ohio is undefeated and has beaten everyone they have faced. I am non-biased and Ohio should be number 1.

I don't have a problem with you disagreeing with that because Ohio may not win the National Championship. However, to say "there is no way to defend that Ohio State is the best team in the country" is untrue. There are many ways, you just don't have to agree with them.

Their number 1 ranking is deserved without question. My argument is that they are not the best team in the country. I already know the response to that is they are undeafeated, they beat number 2, and all this other junk. As of right now. I would take USC, LSU, and Florida versus Ohio State. I truly believe all three teams would win a bowl game against Ohio State.

sportthink,
I do not uderstand the Athleticism comment, There are 4 teams in the country that are pretty even this year on that front. OSU,USC,Texas, UM everyone else is much slower. ND is a year or 2 from that level. And you can not back up that USC is more athletic than OSU and you know it. The proof is in black and white. You secondary is going to give up speed to the top 3 OSU wide outs. They also are giving up heigth to them as well.
and the O-lines and D-lines pretty much are even. OSU O-line 305 average OSU D-line 290 average
USC O-line 305 average USC D-line 290 average
so there is a wash. you do have an advantage in linebackers but it is only experince. so I will give you that. but then you said Carroll is better
You need to prove that one. I will take a coach with 5 NC 4 d-2 1 d-1. but I think they wash eachother as well. it comes down to the RB and QB RB is a wash but pittman is a senior so that gives him an edge you also need to look at wells The guy Carroll could not get to come to USC he will make a differnce in this game.
And if you think USC has a better QB you are crazy!!
I think this game goes to overtime and then it is who wants it more.
I will take OSU by 1

If Pete Carroll thinks this team is the most athletic defense he has ever had, then I think they are more athletic. The game will be close and I'll be glad when it finally gets here.
