So yesterday the Pro Bowl Rosters came out.  And I have to say they are pretty much what we expected, am I right?  Now here is my problem, what is the point of the Pro Bowl exactly?  They are not playing for anything.  Okay some would say it's a pride thing, but really who cares enough to even watch it???  I mean at least in the MLB they are playing for home field advantage in the World Series.  The NFL waits until there season is completely over and then they want us to come back for one last game that means absolutely nothing?  To me this is just a way for the league to make a few more bucks.  Thats all I got.

All star games are just plain stupid! Most are done mid-year and whats the point of that? Shouldn't an all-star be judged upon the whole of an entire season? And then the NFL does it after 14 games...14! They can't wait 2 more games?

Then when you go and watch them they are all meaningless, with the exception of baseball's, and are just like pre-season games. Who cares? Do people seriously have nothing better to do than watch "pick-up" games of the respective sports?

The only good thing that comes out of all-star games is that it recognizes a players good year, or half-year in most cases.

I don't know that I've ever sat and watched an entire Pro Bowl. It's generally considered an honor for players to be elected, but they're so ####ed up at the end of the season, many of them opt not to play.

Voting for the Pro Bowl is different from basketball and baseball all-star games in that voters don't get 100% of the say. Coaches and fellow players also determine who gets to to go to Hawaii, but otherwise, you're right, who cares. In such a physically demanding sport, it's doubtful players give it their all in a game that doesn't matter when all they can look forward to is resting their aching bones.

Now, I DO disagree with LetsGoBuffalo. I LOVE the NBA All-Star Game. Sure it's mostly offense, but that's what the league promotes. Its dunk, its alleyoops, its fastbreaks. Are you kidding me? Kidd, Shaq, Garnett, Duncan, Nowitzki, Nash, Wade and LeBron all on the floor at the same time? Who could ask for anything more? (Am I starting to sound like Bill Walton)

Its a meaningless game! What does it matter? No one is trying.

I'd understand if it were a matter of these guys actually trying to win something but they aren't trying, they are show-boating. Who cares?

Buff, not every game has to MEAN something. Assuming you're talking about the NBA All-Star game, it's an exhibition game to be sure. But it's also an exhibition game that features the finest, freak of nature athletes the game has to offer.

How about the 1980s mathcups of Jordan, Spud Webb and Dominique in the Slam Dunk contest? Are you kidding me? Those are among the most memorable moments in our sporting nation's recent history.

Sure, the game has no bearing on the standings or home court advantage in the post-season, as Selig recently introduced in Major League Baseball, but ask the players on the floor whether or not they want to win that game for their conference. It's meant to be a game for the fans to enjoy, and speaking as a fan, I'll be watching.

There is no way you can be serious with your description of those slam dunk contests as some of the most memorable moments in our nations sporting history!

Come on man, you may find them entertaining but that is all that they may offer. You are getting carried away with the NBA all-star game and its events. You listen to the hype too much.

That's the whole purpose of sports, bro. Entertainment value. Fans watch and attend these contests to be entertained. Certainly more people are watching those all-star games than regular season games between the Raptors and the Wizards, or the Nationals and the Brewers (although this probably doesn't hold true for the NFL).

If every game had to mean something, then why even have the Bucs, Lions or Browns play their remaining two games of the season?

And regarding how "memorable" those early dunk contests were, my point is this. You can look at any photograph of a professional athlete, with the glaring exception being the shot of Ali standing over Sonny Liston, and not know from what game or in what context that picture was taken. However, everyone knows when that famous picture of Jordan flying through the air was taken. The dunk contest itself may have been meaningless in the standings, but the evolution of those contests, for better or for worse, changed the way the game is played.

There's only one thing worse than watching an NBA All-Star game, and that's watching an NBA regular-season game.

I could tolerate any insurance seminar. For days I could sit there and listen to them go on and on with a big smile on my face. And they'd say "How can you stand it?" And I'd say "'Cause I've seen an NBA All-Star game. I can take anything." And you know what thy'd say? They'd say "I know what you mean."

The point of it is to get Chad Johnson into the broadcast as much as possible to entertain us. We won't get it from the game itself.

So what if it's pointless? It's football. It's all the good players out on one field at one time. Who cares if they don't do anything? It's football. It's just a super-early preseason game with all the good players instead of all the backups. Works for me.
