A response to Yankee great Murcer dies of brain cancer I am a 4th generation Yankee hater, I thought Murcer would be a Sox nemesis for a long time. When he came up i was breaking transistor radios, actually both teams were not good. Sox finished a half game out of last place in1966, yanks were last. listening to the yankee fans wax nostalgic about the pinstripe mystique is fascinating to me, must be nice growing up front runners, thinking you are an empire, must be humbling now. Steinbrenners embody that bloated sense of self importance. There is a difference 'tween Sox,cub fans and the evil empire. It is palpable. In your minds.
I remember Mercer. I am a 4th generation Yankee hater and he struck fear in my heart i thought he would be a Sox nemesis for a long time. Did not materialize. That whole Yankke front running mystique is of interest to me. When I was breaking transistor radios in 1965 and 1966 it did not occur to me to jump ship. Interestingly the Sox finished a half game out of last place in 1966, Yankees were dead last. The fact that the Sox have dissapointed me over the years and I have stuck by them shows the difference between a Cubs and Sox fan and the front running Yankee fan. They are the evil empire and the misanthropic steinbrenners embody that bloated , over inflated illusion of greatness.
