VOTERS, VOTERS, VOTERS....THE MYSTERY JUDGES ARE....It's time to VOTE! Day #2
Sep 08, 2007 | 11:41PM | report this

Hi everyone welcome to the second blogger's voting page for the:

'Why I am a Fan of my Team'  contest.

We had quite a few hits on the first page, but not alot of votes.

I realize the weekend is time for FOOTBALL, but it only takes a minute to vote.

During timeouts, commercials, between games or at halftime, it's just takes a minute.

I would like express my thanks to the 3 MYSTERY judges. They put alot of thought and read everyone's entry. Thank you

The first judge I would like to introduce is a well respected blogger in this community. His Duckworthyness is muchly appreciated. It could only be the Philadelphia Phillies biggest newspaper duck reporter....

 edhardiman! Thank you ED.

The second judge tells me he has no knowledge of baseball at all. He's never followed the game really and spends alot of his time under the hood over in the NASCAR blogs. His ride has a SILVERSTREAK and he loves NUTS, BANANAS, and BABES...It's our favorite M*O*N*K*E*Y..I mean ####...

Photogr!  Thanks Photo I know the material must have been a challenge at times.

And the third judge is into horses. Not your ordinary kind of horses. She's more into BRONCIN' BRONCOS. Like that cute NEW foal that she's  bouncing on her knee. She's not only sleep deprived but she puts up a mean blog herself... it could only mean that..

broncogirl is IN THE HOUSE. Thank you broncs I know how hard it is with little ones and you're a trooper for being a judge.

Now broncogirl HASN'T voted yet. So here's your chance to sweet talk guys.

Be careful though, from what I heard she's got a WHIP and she's not afraid to use it!

Now remember you can vote for any entry. It doesn't have to be your own.

  VOTE!

VOTERS, VOTERS, VOTERS.....IT'S TIME TO VOTE!!!!
Sep 07, 2007 | 10:01PM | report this

 Okay Folks...now it's your turn ...to decide who you felt  wrote the best entry in the;

'Why I am a Fan of MY TEAM.....CONTEST!

I'm starting it off a bit early, so you get 2 extra hours of voting!

These guys did an incredible job and you VOTERS are going to have a hard time deciding who to give you vote to.

The rules are very simple for voting. Only (1) vote per blogger. You can 't split your vote. Otherwise it does not count and will be thrown out.  You must vote between NOW and 12:00 midnight on Sunday Sept. 9th.

Also before I forget to mention this the ENTRANTS also can vote (1) time. They can vote for themselves or anyone else.

The Mystery judges who I will identify on Sunday, votes count towards 20% of the entire vote. The judges are judging separately so there is a possibility of that 20% being split 3 ways.

 The entries are:

 Morisao's....Rangers

 Forensic2's....Indians

 broblog's....Yankees

 Marty Walker's....Reds

 saxman57's....Mariners

 Nooch's....Giants

 golfbloggers....Rockies

 bosox61's....Devil Rays

 hoit's....Tigers

 JoshQPublic's...Red Sox

 ian2813's.... White Soxs

 jon464's....Dodgers

 ksp113's....Orioles

 cuziffer's....Brewers

 and Finally

 tophatal's....Marlin's

 Those are you 15 choices.

You can state your vote by saying the team name or blogger name.

We'll tally them up on Monday and announce the winner on Wednesday. In case of a tie, the person who posts the  51st comment on THIS site will have the deciding vote and must state their deciding vote at that time. If they have already voted then THAT vote counts twice! Otherwise it goes to the next comment down the line. If it doesn't get that far then I will ask my daughter to pick a name out of a hat on Frank Izzarry's show and pick a winner that way!

  Have fun!

  Peace Pipe?

VOTERS the 'Why are YOU a Fan of your team....Contest' STARTS SOON
Aug 31, 2007 | 11:50PM | report this

Hey fellow bloggers welcome. Some of you out there have already read about the "Why YOU are a FAN of your team...CONTEST'. Some may have not.

Starting on Sept 2nd thru Sept 6th bloggers on this site will be submitting entries on why they are fans of their MLB teams. This isn't a popularity contest. There's much more to it.

It's a contest based on the premise that they are trying to convince you to be a FAN of their team. It is also based on the premise that YOU have no loyatlies to any particular team.

A couple years ago a gentleman who wasn't a fan of any team put up for grabs his loyalties. He took out an advertisement and LO and Behold ALMOST every team responded with offers of free tickets, sports memorabilia, autographs, posters... you name it he got offered it.

Now unfortunately we can't do that here, but what we can do is this. Make them sway us by giving us knowledge about what it is to be a fan. A REAL fan. Show us the teams History, players, little known facts, and funny Quirks. Show us team chemistry and how the team is invovled in the community through charities and time contributions and such.

Give us something besides W/L records or championship banners. Show us YOUR TEAM SPIRIT.

MAKE US WANT TO BE A FAN OF YOUR TEAM!

I think it would be awesome for us to learn about each other without fear of reprisal.

Now the list of 19 bloggers to take part is really quite impressive. We have Marty Walker. Nooch. Josh Q Public. Morisato. hoit. oaklandathleticsfan. golfblogger. Tophatal. r morley. jon 464. mafioso. Ian2813. Forensic2. cuziffer. Forgotton Fan. ksp113. saxman57. bosox61. And who can forget broblog.

Quality bloggers who will do their best to represent their team. and put their hearts into it.

 Now:

They will blog their entries on their OWN SITES.

They will headline their entries so you the voter/judge will be able to pick them out quickly.

They will be titled as such....

Why I am a Fan of my team...(THE NAME OF THE TEAM)! (CONTEST ENTRY)

No votes will be counted on their sites to ensure all entries have had the chance to be read. But you are encouraged to comment . Also only ONE vote per blogger/judge. This is to insure vote padding isn't done. Five entries may be worthy of your vote but you can only vote for  one.

Voting will not take place until Sept. 8&9. I will put up a VOTING post on Sept. 8th at approximately 12:01 am and run it thru Sept 9th til midnight. This is to insure  that all entries have been read.

To put a little spin on things I also have three MYSTERY judges. These judges are unbiased and two of the judges don't follow baseball. The other judge is a diehard fan of BASEBALL and a team that is NOT represented in the contest. I will reveal the judges after all entries have been submitted. These three judges represent 20% of the total vote. So the more votes there are the less influential they are. it also takes away the vote padding.

I really hope you as bloggers enjoy the effort these guys put into their entries.

 Happy reading...

 PEACE PIPE?

P.S. On Sept 17th. I will be reserving  team entries for a NFL Fan contest.  To be fair it is first come first takers.

Why YOU are a Fan of your team....Contestants reminder....VOTERS...VOTERS...VOTERS
Aug 29, 2007 | 5:42PM | report this

Hi Everyone. Just posting to remind everyone when they are scheduled to post their blogs.

19 contestants have signed up. I'm breaking them up into divisions to make it easier for people to read the blogs and vote.

The only change is I'm moving Tophatal in with the N.L. Central teams since he is the only representative in the N.L.East.

Here are the blogging days for each ENTRY/TEAM and remember the earlier you blog on that day the more exposure you're going to get.

A.L. EAST: To blog on Sept. 2nd

Bos. Red Sox: Josh Q. Public

 N.Y. Yankees: Broblog

 Balt. Orioles: ksp113

 T.B. Devil Rays: bosox61

  N.L. EAST/CENTRAL: To blog on Sept. 3rd

 Fla. Marlins: Tophatal

 Milw. Brewers: cuziffer

 Hou. Astros: ForgottenFan

 Cinn. Reds: Marty Walker

A.L. CENTRAL: To blog on Sept 4th

 Cle. Indians: Forensic2

 Det. Tigers: hoit

 Chi. White Soxs: Ian2813

 K.C. Royals: rmorley

N.L. WEST: To blog on Sept. 5th

 Colo. Rockies: golfblogger

 L.A. Dodgers: jon 464

 S.F. Giants: Nooch

A.L. WEST: To blog on Sept. 6th

 Ana. Angels: mafioso

 Sea. Mariners: Saxman

 Oak. Athletics: Oaklandathleticfan

 Tex. Rangers: Morisato

There you have it, the dates to post your entries. It is very important to remember to mark your ENTRIES as follows:

"Why I am a Fan of my team .....(NAME OF TEAM)"! CONTEST ENTRY!

This will help the judges and fellow readers find your blogs and read them.

Also you are writing the entry on your own site. You can collect comments and such but NO VOTES on YOUR SITE will count. Those Votes that count will be placed on this site on another blog on Sept. 8&9.

This is to be fair to other contestants to ensure all entries have already been submitted and reviewed by judges and voters alike. Also all involved can see voting results without jumping around to 19 posts. Also please respond to this post so I know you got the reminder and if you have any questions.

VOTERS; I would like you to please be impartial in this contest. This isn't a contest of whose is your favorite team. It is set up as YOU being a fan of no particular team and judging who has the best argument for you becoming a fan of their team. They will use team histories, players, quirks, little known facts about charities, anything to entice you to become a fan of that team.

It is set up on this premise. A couple years ago a gentleman with no team favorite put his loyalties up for bids. Almost all the teams responded with offers of sports memorabilia, tickets, and other perks. We're using information instead.

 Good luck to all involved.

Why are YOU a Fan of your team....Contest
Aug 19, 2007 | 12:15PM | report this

You often hear the bantering back and forth on this blog of who's team is better.

A couple of years ago a guy who really wasn't a fan of any baseball team decided that he was going to SHOP AROUND for his loyalties, and opened up for TEAMS to try to persuade him who to root for. I don't remember what team won but I know the guy was unindated with offers of jerseys, autographed balls, tickets, and stuff like that.

What I'm looking for is a spokesperson for each respective team.

I would like to get a feel for the team that you root for, the athmosphere  that surrounds your team...i.e..the ballpark, historical players, colorful players, traditions, team charities, events, all those little quirks and stuff like that. In other words HARDCORE fans who have an understanding of their teams but have the diplomacy to put across their teams in the best possible light.

We all hear about the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers,  Mets, and high profile teams and their histories. Let's get the skinny on all the rest too. We'll learn alot about what's important to each other.

What I'll do is this: I will take one blogger for each club. Then starting Sept. 1st you'll have a day that week to post ON YOUR BLOG, what it means to be a fan of YOUR TEAM. I want you to remember you will be representing your fan base. So be informative. This will also give you time to form your perspectives and put them on a rough draft before you actually blog.

The winner will be voted on by the bloggers on this site on Sept 8 & 9. And can be clearly seen by all. I'm also looking into asking a panel of 3 judges who are NOT BASEBALL fans to JUDGE the quality of the information. Their opinion would count as 20% of the voting tally. This hopefully would offset biased voters who would vote for their team regardless.

N.L. EAST... To blog on Sept 1st.

N.Y. Mets...

Phil. Phillies...

Atl. Braves...

Fla. Marlins... Tophatal

Wash. Nationals...

A.L. EAST... To blog on Sept. 2nd

Bos. Red Sox... Josh Q. Public

N.Y. Yankees... broblog

Tor. Blue Jays...

Balt. Orioles... ksp113

T.B. Devil Rays... bosox61

N.L. CENTRAL... To blog on Sept. 3rd.

Chi. Cubs...

Milw. Brewers... cuziffer

St. Louis Cardinals...

Hou. Astros... Forgotten Fan

Cinn. Reds... MartyWalker

Pitts. Pirates...

A.L. CENTRAL... To Blog Sept. 4th.

Cle. Indians... Forensic2

Det. Tigers... hoit

Minn. Twins...

Chi. White Soxs... Ian2813

K.C. Royals... rmorley

N.L. WEST... To blog Sept. 5th.

Ari. Diamondbacks...

S.D. Padres...

Colo. Rockies... golfblogger

L.A. Dodgers... jon 464

S.F. Giants...Nooch

A.L. WEST... To blog on Sept. 6th.

L.A. Angels... mafioso187

Sea. Mariners...Saxman57

Oak. Athletics... oaklandathleticfan

Tex. Rangers... Morisato

Sept. 7th gives bloggers the opportunity to go back and review blogs that were posted throughout and to be fair to earlier blogs so that they're not forgotton.

Those are the slots. First come first serve. There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. I used to sell sports memorabilia, and I have a few trinkets laying around.

I'll put up an NFL fan one on Sept 15th.

  Peace pipe?

Baseball fans everywhere would like to THANK the YANKEES
Aug 11, 2007 | 12:38PM | report this

Recently while in my teepee, sitting in my Berk-o-Lounger (YES I raided some paleface. Actually I got it at a furniture store and the customer service guy was white) smoking my peace pipe, I, like you, have probably noticed that with the recent Red Sox tailspin a RASH of Yankee fans have suddenly shown up just to spout their mouths in true rude Yankee fashion. Like that annoying itch Jeter's been passing around (Or so I read...see JQ's blog), that won't go away they are coming out of the rafters like swarming rats on a sinking ship.

So in HONOR of those RUDE Yankee fans and the Yankee organization, I would like to say....Baseball fans EVERYWHERE would like to thank the 2004 Yankees for providing fans with the GREATEST CHOKE IN PROFESSIONAL SPORTS HISTORY!

Since 2004  much has changed in the game of baseball, including the classic song "Take Me Out To the Ballgame"  in part inspired by the works of JQ:

 Sing along Kiddies:

Take me out to the ballgame

Take me out to the crowds.

Buy me a championship ....or I'll be mad

I'll throw a tantrum ...like no fan's ever had.

So it's cry.. cry ..cry .... for the itch cream

And I think... Derek Jeter's... to blame

  And it's ONE..TWO..THREE..CHOKES you're out...... at a YANKEEEEE.....BALLGAMEEEE

Now wasn't that FUN. But that wonderful rendition of that classic wasn't the only thing the 2004 Yankees have given us and baseball fans across the country would like to express their gratitude for giving them the opportunity to 'PULL THE ACE FROM UP THEIR SLEEVE',  DEALING them 'THE NUTS', possessing the 'RINGER' and 'SMOKING GUN' , 'ROCK OVER SCISSORS..PAPER OVER ROCK..SCISSORS OVER PAPER, and handing over to us the 'KEY'S TO YOUR HOUSE', because we've hit the 'JACKPOT, TRIPLE 7'S and been DEALT BLACKJACK in EVERY CHOKE ARGUMENT YOU BRING TO US!

I would like to thank personally those GREAT YANKEES for making it all possible.

Alex 'I SISSY SLAP BECAUSE I GOT #### SLAPPED BY VARITEK' Rodriguez

Mo 'THE SOX ARE MY DADDY' Rivera

Derek 'PASS ME THE CALAMYNE LOTION' Jeter

  Jason' THE  HUMAN SYRINGE' Giambi

Jorge 'I'M THE OLDEST LOOKING M*O*N*K*E*Y IN BASEBALL SINCE YOGI BERRA' Posada

Hideki' KONG KICKED MY SORRY GODZILLA ARSE' Matsui

Bernie' MY ARMS LIKE A "WEEKEND AT BERNIE"S'  "YOU KNOW DEAD" Williams

And ALL those  GREAT YANKEE CHOKERS of 2004 who made all of this possible.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FROM  THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS......

THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU...

LADIESSS AND GENTLEMENNNN ...I PRESENT TO YOU THE 2004 NEW YORK YANKEES!

TAKE A BOW BOY'S YOU'VE DESERVED THIS!

P.S I wrote this blog after posting a comment  in response to those Yankee bandwaggoners who only spout off when they think they have an edge on Josh Q's blog.

I just had to share because I'm curious how you felt when you first used this argument against a Yankee fan.

Tell me honestly... it felt GREAT didn't it! Peace Pipe?

Why I CRIED when Barry Hit #756....
Aug 09, 2007 | 8:58PM | report this

In recent posts I have read responses from bloggers that they CRIED when Barry Bonds hit # 756. In all honesty when I heard that Barry Bonds accomplished this feat...a tear rolled down my cheek and I'll tell you why....

BUT FIRST let me pause and reflect on other events that made me cry.

I CRIED: When Roberto Clemente, a true sports hero, Thurman Munson, and Cory Lidle were all tragically killed in plane crashes.

I CRIED:  When Reginald Denny was pulled from his truck and savagely beaten because of  the Rodney King saga.

I CRIED: When the Tsunami of 2005  swept away and killed hundreds of thousands of people who perished on Christmas morning.(Our time).

I CRIED: When BOTH my daughters were born because in my eyes they were perfect and exquissently beautiful.

I CRIED: When I heard about Jon Benet Ramsey.

I CRIED: Throughout the 1972 Olympic games in Munich.

I CRIED : When my daughter read her first book cover to cover and she was so proud of herself. And I was too.

I CRIED: When my dog Buster, and Sir Thomas O'Shay my pet hedgehog died.

I CRIED: After the Boston Red Sox won the 2004 W.S. ending 86 years of frustration.

I CRIED: When O.J. got off.

I CRIED: When Tony Conigliaro got hit in the head with a fastball.

I CRIED: When Hank Aaron was rounding the bases after hitting HR # 715. I was 12 and his amphetamine usage wasn't known at the time.

I CRIED: When the Challenger space launch exploded killing her crew.

I CRIED: When I heard how Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper died even though they had died in 1959 three years before I was born.

I CRIED: When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and the south coast killing thousands and making thousands of thousands more lose everything and homeless.

I CRIED: The day my now 7yr old made a makeshift memorial with sticks to our cat who had died 2 yrs earlier, and scribbled the name Phoebe on it. Bless her sweet little heart.

I CRIED: When the SAWX lost the '67,''75 and '86 World Series and the ''78 playoff game with the Yanks.

I CRIED: When Christian Lattner hit that miracle shot to beat my UCONN Huskies in the '97 NCAA tournament.

I CRIED: When one of my best friends died in a motorcycle accident when I was a senior in high school.

I CRIED: When my brother put down a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt to win our regional Babe Ruth League championship.(Anyone can hit a G.W. HR, try a G.W. bunt base hit).

I CRIED: The first time my daughter ran up to me, threw her arms around me and said "Daddy's home".

OTHER TIMES I HAVE SHED TEARS: 1980 Miracle on Ice victory over the heavily favored Russians; When Nadia Comenichi landed the first of her many perfect 10's; And when the Patriots won their first S.B. in 2001.

So why Barry? Why did I cry? I wasn't happy Bonds broke the record. Always felt Bonds' has never been 100 percent up front with us about this whole steriod issue.

  Put your head back and think back when you first saw the game. Deep down I know why;

Baseball is a game of inches. You hear it all the time. THERE"S a line drive down the third baseline.... FOUL by inches. Did he make a diving catch?! Unbelieveable! Oh wait the Ump says he trapped it!  Hit the sweet spot on the barrel of the bat and it's gone. Get under it a quarter inch and it's a pop out or flyout. Over by the same amount you hit a grounder to short, double play inning over.

Baseball is also a game of numbers, a statisticians dream. ERA, RBI,HR, W-L, K-BB ratios, WHIPS, SLG PCT....you get the picture. And we base our GREATS of the game by these numbers. And what greats there have been: DiMaggio, Williams, Ruth, Banks, Clemente, Gibson, Clemens, Seaver, Foxx, Killebrew, Greenberg, Kaline, Cobb, Hornsby, Mantle, Ripken, Aaron, Speaker, Mathewson, and just so many more.

Then there's Voices of the game. Oh, Curt Gowdy, Vin Scully, Harry Carrey, Phil Rizzuto( Anyone from back east remember THE MONEY STORE ads. not to mention Meatloaf's Paradise on Dashboard Light), and just countless others.

And finally there are the Kids. They say baseball is a kid's game. Passed down from generation to generation. My father who coached Farm League, Little League and Babe Ruth League passed it down to us kids. And my PePe and MeMe passed it down to him. PePe was a big fan of baseball. His Uncle Larry 'Nap' Lajoie was a  second baseman for the Philadelphia A's. He musta been pretty good too seeing that "Nap" was the 6th player enshrined into the baseball HOF. They took him to see Ted Williams at Fenway to watch the SAWX, and taught my Dad the game through a players perspective. My Pops loved baseball just as much as my PePe and dove right in. I went to my first SAWX game when I was 6. It was a 4/5 hour drive and was exciting as hell. Yaz didn't hit one out and we lost, but it was love at first sight. The Fens is small and cramped and at that time in '68 it was still one of the older parks like today. It had what I like to call; a lived in feeling. But it was very cozy. The big columns of cotton candy, the smell of popcorn and cracker jacks not to mention the hot dogs and kielbasa with onions. I learned to love the place through the years watching Yaz, Pudge Fisk, Rico Petrocelli, Luis Aparicio, El Tiante and my favorite BoSox Dewey Evans. Man had a RIFLE of an arm. And through this I learned something. Something important. Baseball is like family. It's about being out in the garage while helping you dad take the carburator out and listening to the game. Or mom throwing some concoction together at dinnertime because it was almost gametime. I still don't know what half that stuff was. It's about getting in trouble for making a raquette upstairs playing paper baseball with a taped up piece of paper and a wooden dowel, in the frigid cold of February with a foot of snow on the ground. Hit it over the railing and downstairs it's a HR because I'm not getting it. It's the tree is first base, the twig is second, the bow of the boat is third and the stone in front of the garage is home. Anything hit past the apple tree is a HR. The most important thing about families it's about our KIDS. They come first. A youngster is taught in Farm League, Tee Ball, Little League, Babe Ruth, Pony Leagues, high school varsity and jv. to learn the basics of the game. Practice hard, and play the game the way it was meant to be played. With INTEGRITY and BY THE RULES.

Why did I start off with the I CRIED. It's simple really. They are all real emotions that have an honest core. Just like when I was a KID. The same kid that we all have in us today.

I CRIED: When Barry Bonds hit his HR because he ushered in the Steriod Era regardless if he did them or not.  It's sad somewhere along the way we decided that an Institution MLB, an organization MLBPA, and individuals who use steriods can get away with cheating. By letting this STERIOD ERA have a free pass we have lost an important link in our lives. The memories of those who DID not CHEAT in favor of those that do. The Steriod Era has put in question  the integrity of the game. It also has put into question the performances of the Greats of the game. To strip those who have not cheated and give accolades to those who have is unfair. And that includes the integrity of my Great Great Uncle Larry 'Nap' Lajoie. Sorry Nap , Love ya. You see PePe and Pops taught me that baseball is my extended family. And families are honest with each other.  And because of this: We have cheated our kids.

Both BIG and SMALL

PETITION TO INSCRIBE GREG ANDERSON'S NAME ON BARRY BOND'S HR PLAQUE

Yep, we're gonna get flak for this one ...but who cares.

Say YEA, it's a signature.

Say NAY, it's a shame.

I'll even be sporting about this and start the NAYS with a 10 vote start. This is taking into account all the people who won't place a dissenting vote because I've ticked them off with my views regarding Barry, Steriods, Ultra. My unbending belief that it's WRONG to have any sex with animals or children, the Yankees, or any of those mentioned above. You don't want those suckers multiplying. Though I'm usually pretty fair with the Yankees.

ABOUT ME

socratesofswat
Residing in Boise, Idaho with my wonderful wife and two of the greatest kids a Dad could hope for. No I'm not a potato farmer! New Englander at heart, raised in the Northern Connecticut Valley where I learned to love the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, Celtics, and UConn Huskies. I get my passion and fire from my mother's side. She was 1/2 Sioux and Irish. My Dad's side were the sport nuts. My favorite big leaguers: My Great, Great, Uncle, Larry (Nap) Lajoie, Ted Williams, and Nomar Garciaparra. Yankees S**K. Moved to Calif. in my early 20's, Lived there for 25 years. Got the hell out before it slips into the Pacific. Which I hope it does! I learned that hard work and determination
gets you places. I'm the the bitters in your coffee and the thorn in your side. Sauerkraut is just cabbage gone bad and I wouldn't feed beets to my worst enemy. Unless you're a Yankee, Raider or Laker.
