Les Miles: Miles is going to Michigan, Miles is staying at LSU, or Miles is acting like Saban? The choice is easy; Miles pulled a Saban. Remember when Nick said he wasn't going to the Dolphins, then later on he said he wasn't going to Alabama. Well he was just waiting for the best offer and Miles is doing the same thing. LSU has reportedly renegotiated his contract so he could stay at LSU, but I will not be suprised if he still moves on to Big Blue because of more Green. Money talks, and whichever team ponies up the most dollars will get Miles. I for one think Miles would be an #### to take the Michigan job and he will stay at LSU. He walked into a program that was winning and had loads of talent. If he leaves he is going to a Big 10 team that is in dire need of rebuilding and is the fourth or fifth best team in the conference behind Ohio State, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Miles can stay at LSU and keep on winning, or move on to the Big 10 and struggle. Hmmm, he has LSU over a barrel, they will pay him a huge addition to his contract, and he keeps on winning.
Jason Whitlock: I like Whitlock, and for the most part I agree with much of what he says. The only problem I have with his article is the timing. I understand why he wanted to get out in front of the arrests and blame it as black on black crime. In fact, 3 of the 4 arrested were black, so it appears he was write on that count, but it is appearing more and more like a botched robbery attempt. That does not change the message that Whitlock is espousing. There is a black ####, and drugs are definitely tied to violent crime. Sean Taylor was hanging around a bad element. At least one of the accused was at his house earlier that month for a party. All of the accused have a rap sheet a mile long littered with drug charges and petty theft. So in a very real sense Whitlock was right, but where he went wrong was in his timing. There was no reason to write this story this week. The message could have waited until Sean was buried and in the ground. Whitlock could have waited until Taylor's grieving parents had a chance to bury their son. Whitlock would have then had more evidence for his story and he would not have to recant any of it. I still like Whitlock, but he falls into the same trap as many of us do in blogging, and that is trying to beat everyone to the next story. If your story has merit, it can wait to do it right.
BCS: I hate to see Ohio State slide into the national title game, but it appears that will happen. Who gets to play them and probably beat them? I hope LSU gets to go because I think the winner of the SEC title game should get some extra consideration, but I really don't think it matters. I think Ohio State will be overmatched by either Georgia, LSU, or even Oklahoma. Ohio State has not played a game in several weeks and they will be rusty. For sure the old tune about a national play off is about to be sung by every college football analyst on ESPN and every other network. Never mind that the BCS has gotten it right the last few years and in the end the eventual winner will have a solid case for their title, we want more football games. We want to erase all doubt. Can I just say that even with a college play off, there will be those who argue that someone was left out, a missed call cost the real winner a game, and that had teams been seeded differently we might have a different winner. The only way to have a true champion is to go undefeated and then win in the BCS Championship game. Wait, what about Hawaii? I guess going undefeated doesn't mean much.
The landscape of college football is changing fast as is my new top 5. While some may disagree with my choices, no one can deny that LSU is still undefeated and deserves the number one ranking.
5. USF: The were ranked number 6 going into tonight, and they won. They should move up and until they lose they deserve their ranking.
4. Hawaii: Still undefeated and scoring loads of points. I know I am the only one who thinks they should be ranked this high, but I would love to see them face USF in a big bowl game this year.
3. California: Unfortunately they will lose to USC as USC tries to make a case for why they should still remain in the BCS hunt. I expect USC to dominate from here on out, but its too late.
2. Ohio State: Still undefeated and heading towards a BCS bowl berth. Should they run the table in the Big 10, and it appears they will, the Buckeyes will end up in the national title game again vs an SEC power house. Too bad, because I expect the same results.
1. LSU: What a game tonight against Florida! It is going to be some showdown if Florida ends up as number one in the east in the SEC.
A week or so ago I listed my Top 5 in college football. At that time I was reviled for not putting OK or TX in the top 5, well looks like I was right. I stand by my top 5 until one of them loses.
1. LSU: Should they win the SEC Title and beat Florida twice, they are a lock for the BCS title game. Should they lose the first game and win the SEC title game they should go to the title game. Of course the same is true for FL.
2. Florida: It is going to be tough to win in Death Valley, but if they emerge victorious they deserve to be number 1. Besides they are the reigning champs. They may deserve number one status right now.
3. USC: Looking vulnerable today against Washington and they still have to play Cal and Oregon.
4. Ohio State: Easy walk to finish undefeated in the Big 10 which locks up a BCS birth if USC falters. Good coaching goes a long way in a not so tough conference.
5. Hawaii: High powered offense but not enough competition to get a legit BCS shot. Better than Rutgers, WV, and Louisville. Maybe they can play USF in a BCS bowl.
For those who don't think Hawaii should be in the top 5, just look what they did to the same Idaho that USC played. USC won 38-10, and the Hawaii Warriors have already put up 48 points on them and have 3 minutes left. Hawaii may not play the toughest competition, but I am telling you they will beat the Boise State team that shocked the country last year in its Fiesta Bowl upset of Oklahoma. Hawaii has weapons to score with anyone. Ohio State deserves to stay in the top 4 until someone beats them besides Florida. Just my humble opinion.
Based upon the first three weeks we can make a few assumptions, but they are just that. It is a long season and many things can happen. With that said, here is how I see the top five and the worst team in the NCAA.
5. Hawaii: With Colt at the helm this team can stay alive with anyone. Their defense hasn't really been tested yet, but if they win the coin toss they have a shot at winning every game.
4. Ohio State: Still reeling from last year's BCS title loss, they look to win the Big 10 which will have them ina BCS Bowl game, probably the Rose Bowl. In the right scenario they might even have another title shot. LSU and Florida will have to face each other once in the regular season and then possibly in the SEC Conference TItle game. Each could have a loss letting OSU back into the BCS Title game.
3. USC: They looked great against Nebraska, but remember that the Cornhuskers hired Bill Callahan. This guy is possibly the worst coach in the NCAA who was lucky enough to take over a team from Frank Solich with enough talent to win. Too bad his record is about the same as Frank because in Lincoln that can lead to a one way ticket out of town. All in all USC dominated on offense and defense. They are a lock for the BCS title game now that UCLA and Washington lost. Win out and they are in. Easier said than done, but they are on cruise control to the BCS Title game.
2. Florida: Tim Tebow is my Heisman Trophy leader at this point. Four touchdowns today and 176 points in three games is just unbelievable. He is putting up great numbers, but the Gators' defense looks a bit weak. They allowed Troy to score 31 points and a Tennessee team that can't run its way through the cheerleaders' paper banner, to score 20. If they don't improve on defense then LSU will win the SEC crown and they might even lose to Florida State by the end of the year.
1. LSU: As good as Florida and USC has looked, only LSU has dominated its competition three weeks in a row both offensively and defensively. In three games they have only allowed 7 points while scoring 137 points. They have only allowed one touchdown. Compare that to USC which has allowed five touchdowns to be scored on it in only two games. Until LSU loses, they are number one in my book.
Now the worst team in the NCAA has to be Notre Dame. How can a coach like Weis, who is supposedly an NFL offensive genius, not have his team score one touchdown in three games? How can they have negative running yards so far? This team is bad, really bad. I am not sure how the heads at Notre Dame are going to spin this one but if you ask me Charlie is just over rated.
Honorable Mentions: Oklahoma is right up there for number five along with Wisconsin, West Virginia and Rutgers.
Pokey Chapman, LSU’s women’s basketball coach, has suddenly resigned. Originally she was going to finish out the season, but now she is done for good. The rumor mill is in full swing and the word on the street is that Pokey was intimate with some of her players. Putting “####” bashing aside for a minute, I have two problems with this whole scenario.
One, coaches and players should not be sexually intimate be it heterosexually or homosexually. If this were a professor at the college what would happen to him? Would there be outrage among his peers or from the university?
Second, if this had been U Conn’s coach, Geno Auriemma, sleeping with his players I think he would be fired and their would be outrage from a vast array of organizations including NOW. But because this involves a relationship between two women, I believe the GLAD group will take up for her. I also think that you will hear very little about this from the university.
In my opinion, instead of sweeping this under the rug, LSU should treat this situation the same way they would if it was a male coach sleeping or harassing his secretary. And make no mistake, this could fall into a sexual harassment situation. A coach has power of his or her players. The new definitions of sexual harassment have opened up a whole new arena for lawsuits.
Remember a few years back when Bob Knight was accused of some sexual harassment and let’s not forget Clem Haskins at University of Minnesota. Haskins was fired. LSU does not need a parent of one of these players suing them for misconduct. They need to fire Pokey Chapman and do so immediately. Don’t think for one minute that AD Skip Bertman does not already know what has happened.
There is a double standard when men do something wrong with the opposite sex and I for one think it is unfair. My mom always taught me, “If it’s good for the goose, it’s good for the gander.” Treat this situation the same.
The SEC is the best college football conference around. The teams beat up on each other all year long so it is very difficult for one to emerge as a national champion, but if you watch the bowl games you will see that they have one of the highest winning percentages every year. Not to mention that invariable five or six of the SEC teams are invited to bowl games compared to two to three from most other conferences. Georgia, Florida, Auburn, LSU, Tennessee, and Arkansas can stand up to just about anyone else in the nation. The suprising thing about that list is that it does not even have Alabama or South Carolina in it and those two teams are also forces to be reckoned with.
