The Energizer Bunny: Bonds Hits 758
Aug 11, 2007 | 8:02AM | report this

Someone asked me the other day where I had gone.  I'm still here, but with the start up of school just a week away, I am putting in overtime to get our school ready.  With last minute teacher hiring, training of new teachers, ordering of furniture, interviewing parents and children, and switching offices, it has been extremely busy these last two weeks.  One of my history teachers was called out to Iraq this week as well so I had to take him out to lunch and say goodbye.  With all that is going on, I plan on posting on the weekends.  Whoever said that principals don't work in the summer has never been in education.

There has been alot of speculation about whether or not Barry Bonds will be rested now that he has broken the HR record.  Many analysts and Bonds haters have said he will now sit out the rest of the season or be played sparingly, but that is not how I see it.  In fact, Bonds has hit two more HR since his record breaking number 756 blast.  He has three this week and shows no sign of slowing down.  The truth is, the Giants pay Barry way to much money to have him sit, and his production is better than anyone else on the team.  Barry will still take an occassional day off, but he will play the bulk of the rest of the season.  I would expect that he will hit another 10-15 homers along the way.

As for next year, Barry will continue to play.  I would expect him to finally join an AL team and DH for at least one more year.  Barry knows his new record is not safe from A-Rod if he stops now, and he has endured too much to allow his record to be so easily surpassed.  Also, he can still play.  If he can hit 40 HR as a DH, there will be teams clamoring for his services.   The fact is Barry can still hit the ball with the best of them.  He is like the Enegizer Bunny:  He keeps on going, and going, and going.  Just think how much more productive he could be without having to play the field.  As it is, he has 25 HR not playing every day, over 57 RBI, and batting over .280.  Get used to it, we haven't seen the last of Barry Bonds.

bonds should have been a DH this year. he was too stubborn to accept that he's a liability in LF, and the giants were the only team who would pay him close to his asking price.

energizer bunny eh?

i thought the energizer bunny kept going and going, not going for a month, then sputtering for a month, then going for a month, then...well, you get the idea.

Cuz, I agree Bonds should have DHed last year, but I believe he came back to the NL because of the history of the game. Bonds wanted to break the record as a Giant, and it had nothing to do with the payment. He could have been paid by NY that amount, and don't count them out next season.

As for his on again off again, well he has 25 HR, more than most players in the NL and AL. At the top of most categories, so if that is bad, so be it.

Rev,thanks for stopping in.

Hey Lisa,I don't think they will release him. He brings in the fans, and everyone wants to catch one of his HRs. They need him to honor his contract for the investment they made. Just my opinion, but I think Barry plays in 60% of the remaining season, then goes to DH for NY or Oakland.

Bonds will DH for the Yankees next year. Bet on it. It's a match made in heaven. Bat him third and he'll get 150 more good at bats and could possibly hit 35-40 hr's. He won't stop before 825 if anyone will let him play. All the projections at the top end of Arod productivity has him at around 800-810.
As a DH, Bonds hitting home runs is simply a matter of his superior hand/eye coordination and weight transference. Even a slow 47 year old can get around on enough guys with good hand eye coordination. I wouldn't be at all suprised if Bonds could hit 30 as a 47 year old DH. Specially with the modern eye surgeries that enables older people to see as well as a 20 year old. 900 is even possible if his ego holds out and I suspect it will.

I'd really prefer that he DH in Tampa Bay, that way he can be anonymous as possible, but more likely he will join the freakshow in New York. Bonds will go down in history much like Ty Cobb...acknowledged for his talent, but forgotten in time, disowned by the masses and celebrated by nobody. That is the Barry Bonds legacy.

Dusty, I agree Bonds could keep on going for 4 more years or more. Just look at Julio Franco.

FF, I want him to go to NY. He will be embraced if he hits HR, and surely he can do better than Giambi has done the past 4 years.

Cuz, Bonds still has good range in left field, believe it or not. He has the sixth-highest zone rating and fifth-highest fielding percentage among NL left-fielders.

That being said, based on what the Giants organization hasn't said, I can't imagine them offering Bonds another one-year contract. They're looking to get younger. I definitely see him becoming a DH in the AL with the Yankees, Angels, or Athletics.

"Cuz, I agree Bonds should have DHed last year, but I believe he came back to the NL because of the history of the game."

that's your opinion, and that's cool. but from what i understood, there was interest from the A's, angels and mariners for substantially less money (around $10 mil i think), where he'd primarily be a DH. i look at it like the giants offered the most money, plus he likely figured the fans there were the only ones who wouldnt treat him like an opposing player day in and day out, so he took the $16 (or was it $18?) mil. oh, and that deal where he went to the winter meetings in order to basically pimp himself to the highest bidder when the giants werent throwing money at him...well, this is MY opinion, take it for what it's worth.

"Cuz, Bonds still has good range in left field, believe it or not. He has the sixth-highest zone rating and fifth-highest fielding percentage among NL left-fielders."

then why does he get pulled late for defensive purposes? wait, i know this one. because he's old and needs to rest his knees. another of your in-depth stats i take little stock in, like the yankees and their run differential deal. again, just my opinion.

I honestly can't see Bonds going anywhere but the Yankees. Steinbrenner is glutton for aging stars, money is no object, he can count the turnstiles and it will get wild if Bonds gets over 800 and still dinging them out. Bonds himself said "retire? I'll never retire, I'll be chasing 1,000 when I'm 50". I doubt he was joking and he just will never EVER see better balls to hit if he's hiting ahead of Arod?

that's assuming A-Rod will be back in pin stripes next year. right now i think it's 50/50 on that deal.

as for bonds, i think maybe the yankees have learned a little bit about signing so many over the hill players. they're about as stuck as stuck can be with giambi (who isnt even that old), and let go the heart of their team (no, not jeter) in bernie williams.

still not sure about the AL, and definitely not the yankees. i personally dont think bonds wants to leave the left coast. again, just my opinion.

another of your in-depth stats i take little stock in

(Putouts + Assists) divided by Total Chances. So in-depth!

Granted, RZR (Revised Zone Rating) might be a little in-depth, but if you took five minutes to read an article, it'd make sense.

Start here if you're interested.

As for Bonds being taken out -- yeah, he has no fluid in his knees.

What's amazing is that he's still among the best defensive left-fielders at 43 years old with balky knees.

SoCal I really think Bonds plays out the string with the Giants. The fans in S.F. have stuck with him and I can honestly say he won't like the media in N.Y. The media will torch him everytime he fails. Look at what they do to A-ROD. And you also forget the remarks Bonds said about Ruth. The comment that the only reason no one wanted him to beat out Ruth was because he was black. Ruth will ALWAYS be N.Y. HR Champ regardless who passes him. New Yorkers didn't take too kindly to that. I don't think he has the ability to patch that wound up with the personality he has displayed throughout his career. I also don't think the media would like that image to change.

Well I was there for 758 and the fans are still coming out, I would hope as a Giants fan that we would think of the team and not Barry bonds, wins are always more important! Barry Bonds still brings it but we don't have a DH in the National League so maybe its time to go or maybe its time for the Giants to get rid of all the other old timers on the team too, we really need some relief pitching here in SF take care Socal!

Cuz, not disputing that the Giants payed him more than anyone else, just saying he came back to play with them because he wanted to break the record on the team Mays played for and his dad. He also has been a NL guy his whole career. I don't think he wanted to be seen as the HR king who finished it by DHing. Now that he has the record, I think he will go to the AL. Even if Oakland offered the same money, I don't think he would have gone.

Now that he owns the record, it will be interesting to see what the Giants offer. Barry was able to get the money because it was worth it for the Giants. Hey Giambi earns 23 million this year.

Vearl, the fans still come out to see Barry, so he will continue to play. I hope management goes out and gets some help, but I doubt they will.

Socrates, NY will be tougher, but Barry has the entire media world already on his back. As for the fans, they will embrace him if he helps them win games and go to the World Series.

ultra, Barry is not nor will he ever be a defensive liability. At 50% he is still better than Andre Dawson who had bad knees and played RF.

ok, maybe it's not that in-depth. i just checked his defensive stats, and he has 2 errors and 0 assists this year.
does that stat take into account balls that he probably should/could have gotten to but didnt? or just the ones he "got to" and either caught or got his glove on and dropped?
also, since he is regularly removed in the 7th or 8th inning (after what is believed to be his last likely at-bat in many occasions), how many chances is his replacement getting that he could potentially misplay, drop, not get to, etc?
