It appears each week as I get busier and busier I am able to write less and less, but ahh, I finished with another school year with the graduation of the 2007 class and now I should have some time to write. But I also begin summer school on Monday, so I know that time will still be at a premium, thus the weekly installment that I like to call Sunday Socal Rants:
Billy Donovan:Give the guy a break! Very few of us ever get a "do over", but Billy is lucky that he gets one. SEC fans in every state but FL are in mourning because they now have to recruit against this guy and play his teams each and every year for a long time. Donovan is the one who made the Magic put that 5 year no competition clause in his "exit" contract so that he could promise recruits he was staying put in FL. Not to mention that he signed a 6 year deal, players should feel secure in the knowledge that they can play for him and finish their college career under the coach that recruits them.
Michelle Wie: Where shall I start? In one of my many posts on Wie that I have written over the last year and half, I put the blame for most of her troubles sqaurely on B.J. Wie, Wie's father. He has totally ruined what could have been a brilliant career. I will say it again, and maybe this time people will listen, Michelle Wie will never win on the men's tour much less make the cut, and her career in the LPGA will be an afterthought. Pressel, Ochoa, and Lincicome will lead the next generation of great LPGA players and Wie will be the equivalent of Justin Rose on the PGA. Don't get me wrong, Wie has talent, but she lacks killer instinct and her handlers have so screwed with her psyche that she finds ways to withdraw from tournaments that are so bizarre that the rest of the LPGA has come to realize she is a fraud. They do not fear her anymore and as a result, her finishes are at rock bottom. Sorenstam is so right when she says Wie has no class. Not only is she losing it mentally in every tournamet she appears in, but I believe she is headed down the same path as Jennifer Capriati and I would not be suprised if Wie turns to "medicinal" help to calm her frayed nerves. Cocaine, marijuana, alcohol, and antidepressants will all be availabe to her once enrolled at Stanford and I fear she will become the Lindsey Lohan of the LPGA.
Daunte Culpepper: While I am no fan of Culpepper, it appears the Dolphins do not plan on using Daunte this year at QB. He is not allowed to work out with the team during drills, but Cam Cameron says he has no plans on facilitating a trade. Come on Miami, treat the man fairly. If you bring in Green from KC, draft a young QB, and have no plans on playing Culpepper, you should not only release Daunte but you should help him find a new team. There is such a thing as having class. And to think the Dolphins were giving Nick Saban a hard time and saying he was a jerk.
LeBron James:I am one of the few who will say I think the Cavaliers have a shot at winning the NBA Championship. In fact, let me go ahead and even predict that Cleveland will win after being down one game to nothing. James impresses me like no other player in recent memory. I have followed his progression over the last few years and I truly believe he is a one of kind player who will lead his teams to multiple NBA titles. It should be fun to watch him and D Wade over the next 10 years. My opinion on James changed when I saw him yell at his team during the third game of the Pistons series. As he was marching back down the court after one of his magical fading away three pointers, he yelled at Larry Hughes, "Be strong, be strong!" At that moment I knew he was not ever going to give up. Even though they were down by two games, James led them to four straight wins over the much vaunted Pistons. Of course I also think the Pistons will never win with Flip at the helm and C Webber on the court. Having two cursed people on your team is too much to overcome.
Roger Clemens:Simply amazing, or is it? Speculation abounds about Barry Bonds and steroids, but I maintain that there is no way Roger can pitch like he is pitching without some special superhuman abilities at his age. Maybe Roger has found the fountain of youth, HGH, as well. Certainly one sportswriter, Kevin Hench, agrees with me that at least we should be asking the question is Clemens using steroids? I wrote about this last year, and I maintain that pitchers use steroids more than hitters. At least if and when Barry breaks Aaron's HR record, we can take solace that he did it against steroid juiced pitching. Bare in mind that Roger's name has come up on several lists by federal investigators, but for some reason he is never pursued the way Bonds is. Some may believe race has something to do with hit while I think the fact he is about to break a "sacred" record is probably the main reason. Of course I think 7 Cy Young's is pretty impressive and possibly should have an asterisk next to them when Roger saunters into the HOF.
That's it for another edition of my Sunday Socal Rants. Have a great weekend and go Cavaliers!
Hey dear....very well done as usual! I disagree on 2 points.
1. Not everyone in the sec is in mourning that Donovan is back in Gainsville. Most I have spoken with here in KY are glad. We are looking forward to the series of games again. BG vs BD.....can't wait!!
2. No way the Cavs have a chance. The Spurs have beaten much tougher teams than the Cavs and have been there done that. I think the Spurs sweep this one.
Did you drop me my friend? I never see you anymore :(
It's still hard for me to believe that Wie has been so misdirected, but she most certainly has been. What a waste. Culpepper should be thankful to be getting a check at this point. I agree on Cleveland......go Cavs!
Hey Lady, No, I haven't dropped you at all. My life has been one series of graduation ceremonies after another the past two weeks, but it should get more normal now. How could I drop such a lovely lady. As for KY and FL, it should be great games, but I am sure some Cat fans wish the Gators had a new head. As for the Cavs, they won against San Antonio in the regular season series, and they Spurs really didn't kill them in game one with LeBron playing poorly. We shall see.
Steeler, Culpepper should be glad to get a check, but the Dolphins are really screwing with him. It's sad to see in my opinion.
Donovan will be okay. I just hope he has a strong season this year or the media hounds will have at him in a vicious way.
What haven't you already sad about Wie. Obviously she's ignoring you. Too bad. Oh well, she'll make some high bidding socialite a great spouse. Maybe he'll build her her own private golf course. You've had her pegged from day one.
Culpepper has a long road ahead of him. For the Dolphins to go in another direction like this doesn't say a lot for what he has left in the arm or the tank. Perhaps he'll use the perceived dis as motivation?
I can't call it on Clemens. And I'd hate to speculate, but isn't this what everybody's doing about everybody anyway ... Speculating? $17-18 million for four months work is absurb. I wish him well.
The way it's playing out, maybe even the mascots, announcers, and batboys were juicing in the 90s LOL. One would have to be naive to think that none of Barry's dingers were hit off of juiced pitchers though. However, cheating is cheating.
At least to this point, the Michelle Wie thing has just been sad. I hope she can get out of the glare of the spotlight, keep it together, regroup, find her game again, then go on and have a great career.
For now, I'm sticking to my Spurs in 7 prediction. If the Spurs blow the Cavs out tonight, I might have to adjust my # of games to 4 or 5.
Steeler, I see you are sticking to your Cavs pick. Still destiny? LOL
As far as Michelle Wie is concerned, why hasn't there been an investigation on her father B.J. for child abuse? The way he's managed her career is nothing short of reprehensible. A good manager would have NEVER allowed her to turn pro at such a young age. She would have played 4-5 events a year on the LPGA Tour as an AMATEUR. She would have gone to Stanford for a year or two, hone her game, learn how to win, THEN turn pro a la Tiger Woods. (Also Tiger was smart enough to realize he wasn't ready to play on the PGA Tour at a young age)
Mean, Michelle Wie could do a lot worse and end up like Capriati, but I hope you doesn't. Thanks for the comments.
Swamp, never thought about Mascots on steroids, but that Brewers Brat is looking a bit plump these days.
Ion, if you get a chance click on the link where I spell out the way for her to succeed. As for her dad, well dad's are given extra grace for screwing up kids. Just look at how tennis dads have messed up daughters. Mary Pierce, Capriati, and even the Williams sisters to name a few.
Billy Donovan: Should man up and take responsibility for his decision. He's making a mistake backing out of that contract.
Michelle Wie: Has been over rated since the beginning and has become a brat because otherse told her she was the best golfer since Tiger Woods.
Daunte Culpepper: The Dolphins should just release him. The Chiefs treated Green poorly so the Dolphins should've learned from that. Just do him justice and let him go. Then I think he should spend a year somewhere getting healthy.
LeBron James: I don't think the Cavs will win. But given 'Bron's performance it's only a matter of time before a title is located in Cleveland.
Roger Clemens: I love what he's doing. Being a gun for hire. He shouldn't limit his options so. Go to the highest bidder with the best prospects (not always the Astros, Yankee, or Sox). As far as special treatment goes... just shows the Yankee's philosophy of bend over and conform is a crock.
Swamp, the Brat is looking like he gained some "head" size and speed, sure sign of roids.
Rusirious, Donovan has manned up and taken full responsibility for his actions. He said it was his decision and his alone and who ways he can't quit. Have you ever quit a job that you knew you didn't want? It takes guts by Billy to do that.
You would think the Dolphins would learn from the Chiefs, but so far they haven't.
As for Roger, I have no problem with his huge contract, (which only the Yankees could afford) nor being a gun for hire, I just think they guy is using HGH. My opinion.
Socal, I clicked on the link--excellent analysis. It applies just as much today as when you first posted it. The compare and contrast between Earl Woods and B.J. Wie is startling.
Everything I wanted to say, has already been said..... I should'a checked in this morning...
But.... I caught chills with your prediction of Michelle turning to chemical emotional crutches..... no matter how we feel about her golf skills, or her behavior.... no-one deserves that living hell......
SoCalSports ........ Not one to want to rub salt into the wound. But if you were going on LeBron's display against the Pistons then I can understand. But playing the Pistons and then having to play the Spurs are two entirely different obstcles. The Pistons imploded and were at imes lacksadaisical against the Cavs. And they completelt underestimated James' will to win. Whereas the Spurs aren't just that type of team as they went about quickly dismantling this team with almost surgical like precision. It was a tale of two teams , one with experience and the other just getting use to the limelight.
Check out each of the following pieces and let me know what you think with regard to the subject matter in either case.
1) I'll Say What I Mean And Mean What I Say
Does That Sound Right Hon' ?
2) I'm Skip Bayless And I Purport To Be A Reporter Come Sports Journalist.
3) I'll Say It Once Then I Won't Say It Again .....We're Not Boring !
An anti-climactic end to what has been non eventful NBA season altogether. The product is still somewhat lacking. And the teams in the east are woefully out of their depth against the teams from the west.
We're probably in for more of the same next season if things continue to be the way that hey are.
Each of the pieces are written under the tophatal moniker. I look forward to reading your comments on each of the pieces mentioned.
