No One To Blame But Us Bloggers
Sep 10, 2006 | 9:38AM | report this

Alas, I have been asleep at the wheel.  Busy finishing up the Fantasy Baseball season and preparing for Fantasy Football.  So busy that I have stopped posting on Fox.  Then today when I check out the main blog page, once again I see not one, but two Fox writers being shamelessly promoted by the network.  First, the BOTD is the Fox Football blog, and secondly they have Daryl Johnston's blog.  I don't know if either are official Fox Blogs, but they appear to be.  The authors never comment back to the bloggers who post comments.  That is a sure fire sign that the blog is a front for a network writer.  True bloggers always respond to their constituencies.

Responding to those who take the time to read your posts is what makes blogging fun.  Even when you disagree with your respondants, conversing with them and trying to prove your point is half the fun.

I hope to return to the blogging world soon.  Until then, we have no one to blame but ourselves for turning this site over to the pros.

Hey SoCal, we've missed you. Not sure what we can do about who Fox chooses for BOTD. I seldom read their corporate blogs and never comment on them.

I agree, commenting and responding is the fun of blogging. Guess I'll keep doing it as long as they let us.

Half, you are always on top of things.

Hog, it's good to be missed. As soon as I get past the first two weeks of school, things will settle down for me.

Well, if by "on top of things" you mean, usually among the last to find out and chances are I won't understand once I do, then yes, yes I am....

socal- the only thing as annoying as fox employees getting BOTD are comments that come out of left field that have nothing to do with anything...

example: the comment above this one.

also, i've been waiting for the return of some of my old favorite bloggers now that both college and pro football are back, and i'm still waiting.

Hazwife, I don't know who she was. Lots of people in LA. If Haz was going to run off, you should blame him as much as her.

Cuz, comments are what they are. I delete personal attacks, but after that, the arguments begin. I just hate that some really good bloggers have stopped blogging.

It seems posting a large amount of Blogs in a short amount of time ( shock and awe blogging ) is a surefire way to get BOTD. I might try it myself. :)

I don't think we can controll what the powers that be at fox do with their BOTD area. Even if there aren't any comments they still get elevated to that level. Like you suggested the best thing to do is not comment and ignore their crappy writing.

How about today's BOTD? Some brand new blogger named Dweller throws 3 sentences about the sound effects on Fox's television coverage and BAM he is BOTD???

Meanwhile...Dudski, Shooter and LSUFan post blogs that are much more worthy of BOTD and pppppbbbbbtttttttt!!!!!!!!!

It's a conspiricy I tell you. Where the hell are UM and Northsider???

Or how about the yahoo that commented to himself complaining about online poker.
I did have the fox funhouse user leave a wierd message on my latest post. It said "get your shine box" I'm not sure what the hell that means.
Very strange stuff since they changed the site last month.

SoCal I was with you trying to salvage my series in the blogger baseball fest and let's hear it for the lower seeds! Seeds 5 & 6 prevail - Look out 1 & 2, SoCal and I are gunning for you!

As for the BOTD, if I ever get mentioned, fine. I write a lot of comments but won't bore the good bloggers of this neighborhood with mindless drivel to get a BOTD!

OK, I'll admit my Condimentally Correct predictions on my blog amounted to mindless drivel this weekend but it wasn't my intent! (Damn Ron Zook!)

I was wondering where you went, then I remembered you had said you were a teacher so I put 2 and 2 together to equal 5, errr I mean 3, errr D'OH! I am still waiting on those other bloggers so show back up too. I honestly was beginning to think this site was dead with all the usual suspects never posting anything.

Pig-they are at UHA(University of Hate America). I thought you knew?...lol.

I think I have read Dibble's blog twice. Personally they don't give you anything any other blogger can't. Plus they never respond, which begs the question of why they have a blog at all? I guess that "never responding" part goes back to celebrity PC stuff.....aka they might get zaped with a public relations nightmare, and also give credit to the blogging world should they respond to a worhtless, #### blogger like us.

Oh Mustard: I hate you man!!!!! Omar Visquel became the bain of my existance! I never dropped below 4th during the season and get beat in Week 1 of the playoffs. I feel like Peyton Manning right about now.

No seriously it was good to lose out the way I did. It came down to the lst batter of the day, on the final day of the week. Can't get any closer than that. If Omar gets one hit yesterday I win. But he goes 0-4 and I lose. Oh well I can still get 3rd place!!!!!

socal As they feel that it's there prerogative they'll keep on doing so. Mind you aren't these the same individuals that sometimes appear on tv prognosticating the woes and lament the virtues of the various teams. Can't really understand why they'd want another outlet as they've already got the 'squawk box' of tv to pent their frustrations somewhat.

Is it me or is the Tiger's lead in the AL Central shrinking faster than Anna Nicole's dress size ? It's now down to only two games between them and Twins. What could've gone so wrong ? Bad pitching and no timely hitting perhaps ?

Wordup fellow bloggers. Socal..I'm with you on this BOTD business. Considering I've never been BOTD..or even claim to have the skills to get there, it is a shame that big business politics has seeped its way into out little blogging community that was once free from it. Hopefully they will see the error of their ways. Who knows, maybe an anti-BOTD by foxwriters blog will make it there. Keep blogging!!

Fox doesn't care and why should they. We're not paid employees and we provide no profit to the site. I'm not trying to be unsympathetic because i don't feel that it's right either but from my viewpoint the only reason they have a blog section is to attract viewers in order to read their paid writer's material and pad their daily visits. I've haven't checked out any of the other sports sites who allow blogs but I've been told that this is still the best.

Socal,
You are not to blame, neither is any other regular blogger on this site. Fox does what it does and that's that! Blog of the day….YEAH RIGHT! What I don't get is why a pro would post a blog on this type of site if they didn't intend to respond to the comments left by the readers. If you are a pro and you aren't seeking to have an exchange with readers why blog? If a pro just wants to get a point across, write an article for some official org and leave the blogging to those that respond to opinions/comments.

LSU, I'm sorry (not really, but you knew that, LOL).

I wasn't watching our game as closely as you were. That league has been a clusterf.... mess since the midseason meltdown by our illustrious commish and crew. I just hope to continue my run this week and make the finals and see what happens from there!

Good luck in the next round!

Socal, your absence...was...noticeable. See what happens when you leave? Miracle almost set the consectutive Blog of the Day record.

As long as some people enjoy and read, the BOTD stuff doesn't really bother me...that much. What can we do? I will say that among the afforementioned blogs (that aren't so good), most of my fellow bloggers have done a great job of not commenting. Ignore what you don't like, and it will soon go away.

Of course, we took a different route with Dr. K. Bash and beat him with his own penny loafers until he runs away. But for most, it's better to ignore.

So, that's where you've been. I can relate. Somehow I've gone from last in my roto baseball league in May to 1st and I'm spending way too much time trying to nurse it across the finish line. It's like those old WW2 movies where three of the four engines are out and the runaway is just now coming into view.

Anyway, good to see you back in these parts. If there is a first among equals in the blogging game, you're it.

Socal: I agree with you, I don't leave a comment on those blogs for good reason. I find that the main problem with ANY sportswriter, commentator, producer, etc. is the fact that as soon as they start working for a network, they completely lose touch with the fans. These people immediately feel a sense of self importance that keeps their writing and talents from growing. Because the only way to actually REALLY be a good sportswriter, commentator, producer, or sports network, is to keep in touch with the fans. Just because a person finds themselves working for a network does NOT mean that the 'lowly masses' are beneath them. Without the fans, they don't exist. :-)

I dont know which is worse, the blogs from the Fox pros or the BOTD that is just a hot chick pitcure. This week we had Iluvu's blog BOTD twice and once in the most interesting listing and it was the most substanceless blod I have ever seen. the first was just a logo of the Atlanta Hawks, andd that was the whole blog. What a joke

Socal is one of the mainstays of this site and the bloggers who have been around long enough realize and respect his opinion on this matter. I think we've all grown together despite being a world apart. This is what makes blogging fun. We have bloggers who have common interests within eachother as we watch the same events and bring different perspectives. The Blog section should be for us. WE should be the ones that get our posts exposed.

Now I've tried not to get too caught up in this but one thought provokes me: We use this forum to talk sports where Fox emloyees have their forum and they are stepping onto our territory.

My suggestion to FOX: Keep the bloggers happy to keep us turned onto your site first and foremost.

Socal It's just Fox's way of pimpin' it's product as much as it can to the detriment of those who use this forum for a chance to express themselves. I don't mind if it becomes just an occasional thing but somehow I doubt that'll be the case.

As we know that the motto that they live by 'is that you can never have enough'...so they just keep on giving you more and more until you soon get fed up with the situation.
