Babe Ruth was a great player in his day.I say in his day because to deny that it was a different era in baseball is to be ignorant of facts that are indisputable.Facts like the short porch in Yankee stadium where he hit most of his HR’s or facts like his lack of top quality pitchers to hit against.I can not say how great he would be today facing middle relievers, setup men, and closers that were non-existent in the 1920’s, but he was one of the best who ever put on cleats and swung a bat.To deny that would be absurd.Ruth will always be a legend and in some people’s eyes he is the only player that matters: 714
Henry Aaron was also a great player. "Hammerin Hank" as he was called was a model of consistency, hitting 20 plus homeruns for 20 of the 23 seasons he played. Most seasons he had over 30 HR’s.He also endured the kind of hate from racists that no man should have to encounter.Aaron had to live and work under the cloud of hate that threatened his very family. As he approached the record that Babe Ruth had left, the hatred for this man increased exponentially.755
Barry Bonds is still a great player. The fact that a RF with a good arm can throw him out on any normal single to that field and yet pitchers still walk him is unbelievable. He has had 2 hits in his last 22 at bats and yet he was walked 9 times. He bat is still feared.Whether you like Barry or not, his numbers prior to the steroids era were HOF and he will enter in as a first ballot hall of famer. His numbers speak for themselves.713
So where does “racism” rear its ugly head in this whole debate.I have seen many people who deny that racism should even be a part of the discussion when it comes to Bonds. They say things like he is egotistical and his blatant disregard for the fans is why he is disliked.I am sure that Barry’s actions are responsible for some of the hate that is out there but there is still another component of racism lurking just beneath the surface that many refuse to see.The fact that as Barry has approached 714 and as he passes it by, which he will, people still regard Babe Ruth as the all time HR leader is an example of covert racism.People will not acknowledge it and I am sure others will deny it when they read this post, but the fact is that when people say that Babe Ruth will always be the leader they are dismissing the accomplishments of Hank Aaron and not Barry Bonds. The racism is not directed towards Bonds but toward Aaron. The mere fact that Bonds is still compared to Ruth with each at bat shows that the world has not accepted the feat that Aaron established back in 1974.It is time we moved on and put an end to this charade.Aaron is the real HR champion and who knows if Bonds will ever pass him.We know he will pass Babe Ruth for the number TWO spot sometime soon, probably this month.Barry may play one more year as a DH and have a shot at the all time record, but that is not a certainty.Personally, I would love to see George Steinbrenner fork over 20 million a year and have Barry DH for the Yankees.Talk about poetic justice! 75?
TSI, it is so nice to see your Joey Tribiani look alike face smiling on the blogosphere again. Where did you disappear too? I think Barry has a shot if he plays. Let's face it, his knee has kept him from playing as much as I thought he would. Once he clears 714, it will be smooth sailing. He still has a sweet swing.
Mean, had I known you had that record, I would have included it. I guess I missed that on baseball-stats.com, but thanks for reading. Your opinion matters.
Nice blog- It's still there although obviously to a much lesser extent than years past. You can't weigh it measure it or quantify it, but it's there. As long as we speak against it the cowards will keep hiding under their rocks. Although those militia separatist folks, who run around in the woods playing army and training for the day they get their own nation, are kinda scary.
Lot of thought-provoking stuff here which is what you're going for -- I think there are definitely Racists Ruth fans out there -- But I don't want to throw "the Babe" out with the Bath water so to speak -- just 'cause these guys are biggots doesn't mean that we can't appreciate Baby Ruth as a sort of historical marker in relation to Bonds passing him
- I think when he gets closer to Hank I think it's going to really be something and we shall see something really really special --
rivjo, those types of individuals should scare us all and I bet there are some of those on here blogging.
Mav, I agree, historically the Babe was important and should not be forgotten, but the one thing I agree with Selig on (WOW) is that Babe is second, not first and no celebration should happen from MLB.
OK, three comments:
1) Solid, well done blog as always.
2) Each of the three, regardless of color, are from completely different eras, which divides them in my rational way of thinking by many more ways than race. Compare Newton to Einstein to Steven Hawking. See where I'm going? You can't have one without the other (greatness builds on greatness, precedents, measuring sticks, "the bar" raises over time).
3. I look forward to Griffey staying healthy enough to break Aaron's record. Best of all worlds: black, humble, and has faced tough breaks (literally!). Then I look forward to A-Rod breaking HIS record (Dominican-mulatto American, kind of Tiger Woodsy). Then I look forward to Albert Pujols breaking HIS record and then we know who are the best in baseball and belong on top: the morenos who are neither black nor white!
I love baseball!
Blog on.
Addendum---
And someday, a Chinese/Japanese/Vietnamese/Filipin o is going to average more HRs than all of the above. He will have the best physical and emotional qualities of all those cultures: Ichiro with Tiger skill and kung fu power, who never gets hurt a la Cal Ripken, and lasts like Julio Franco, and smashes to all fields, rarely striking out.
How'd ya like that?
Only in America!
I don't think it's ALL about racism. But I think it's relevant, because both Bonds and Aaron have received racist hate mail.
I think a lot of has to do with an old-fashioned mentality of baseball, and some of its fans. Even Roger Maris received hate mail when challenging a Babe Ruth record. People should just wake up and realize that records were meant to be broken, and anyone capable of doing so deserves that recognition. It's not like Ruth will soon be forgotten. Children even learn about Babe Ruth from American History textbooks!
As for Barry's assault on the record books, we'll have to wait through about 300 more Bonds headlines to find out. Maybe he's serious about wanting to end his career with the Giants, maybe it's hogwash. If he belongs anywhere, it's definitely in a Yankee uniform. To be determined.
God, you have to love a guy who can make up his own facts and write them with such authority.
Exactly how many home runs did Ruth hit over your supposed "short Porch"? You wrote more than half. Care to back that up, or just leave it out there as "fact". I'll hold my breath. Wrong again.
Weak pitching? You like to use the word "ignorant" in your posts, that applies here very well. The pitching as a whole in the majors right now is so weak it's pathetic.
If pitching was SO weak back then, tell me, why did they lower the pitching mound 5-10 inches in 1968?
Stick to hockey or some sport that doesn't mean anything. You don't know baseball at all.
Hmmm... this is an interesting post Socal. I am at loss when it comes to those you site that have an issue with Hank Aaron. That was so long ago, the death threats, the animosity at a black man owning the HR record. I haven't heard anything of this nature muttered outside of ESPN Classic.
Those that call Bonds pursuit and the seeming lackl of joy, racism are so amazingly misguided, I pity them. This has nothing, outside of the ####, with racism. Bonds is a true and complete ####. His arrogant and shuns his fans. He lied about his steroid use and continues to deny amid undeniable eveidence.
Bonds pursuit of Ruth has nothing to do with racism and everything to do with the "man"... and I use that term VERY loosely.
ShooterB, Ed, thanks for the comments. I would love it if Griffey broke Aaron's record, but I doubt he will remain injury free. He has the sweetest stroke in all of baseball to me.
Bafongu, I will take it as a compliment that you can say that I write with authority. As for the facts, Most teams I know play half of their games in their home stadium. Over his career extrapolating HR,s Ruth would have hit most of his HR in his own ballpark. According to one source on here, he hit 344 HR in Yankee stadium. Now as far as quoting me, at least quote me correctly. I did not say that Babe hit half into RF, I said he hit half in Yankee stadium. Go back and read it again after you take a "hate" break. I know you get worked up when someone attacks the Sultan of Swat.
As for pitching, that is an argument that can be made from the lack of playing against minority pitchers, closers, middle relief. You can disagree, but you can not prove that as a false statement.
NSF, I agree that many people hate Barry the person. As for your undeniable evidence, he still has not been prosecuted for perjury, something I heard from several bloggers would happen. No one has testified that he took them except for some San Fran paper reporters. He has never tested positive, so how can it be undeniable. Barry denies that he took them for years as people make out. It is a tiring to argue when people make up facts, as Bafongu puts it. He has made up a few himse

Bafongu, do you see the word "most" not half or any such lie. Careful what you quote unless you get it right. Ruth did hit most of his HR, more than any other stadium in the House that Ruth Built. You are one to speak with authority and twist what my post says. Good job.
I have not heard one person say "Babe Ruth is still the all-time home run leader", not one. So your statement is basically based on an either imagining people saying it or hearing one or 2 idiots saying it.
Look I'm sure there are a few whack jobs out there who don't like Barry just cuz he's black. But those people are so insignificant in number that it's pretty much stupid to even acknowledge them.
And no better way to show you're a nutjob conservative than using a Cox and Forkum cartoon. Gonna start cutting and pasting from Limbaugh's site next.
Okay, nutjob's too strong, how about "a little too conservative to be living in Southern Cal".
Okay, I just read the guy's blog about Ruth always being the Home run king. First off, he's one guy. Second, he's just sticking up for his fellow fat-white-guy. Third, I'm pretty sure no mention of race was made in it, although to be fair I did pretty much quit after the 4th stat table
I don't think all of the Ruth admiration relates to racism. I think alot has to do with context. Historically, he revolutionized the game and the first person to make that kind of leap always gets more attention.
To say Ruth is the king of homeruns isn't the same as saying he was a better player than Aaron. Aaron could do some things in the field on the bases Ruth never could. But Aaron was not as dominant a home run hitter as his career record suggests. He was simply the most consistent power hitter we have ever, or likely will ever see. Unlike Bonds, who hit 1st gear late in his career Aaron was as good as he would ever get in his early 20's, but stayed that good for a long, long time. He was never the homerun threat that Bonds or Ruth was. But he hit 44 homeruns a bunch of times and close to that a number of others.
On a personal note, I went to Baltimore two years ago to see Bonds play and it's still a great baseball memory for me. I wish he hadn't placed a doubt in people's minds about his accomplishments by, at minimum, involving himself with the 'better hitting through chemistry' crowd. But, when I watched him I also knew I was seeing the only player since the 1920's who was in Ruth's league as a power hitter. Plus, seeing it on a field built over Ruth's dad's bar was a kind of neat historical oddity.
I have never taken part in a conversation where there has been a racial shadow over do you think Ruth or Bonds is better. I'm sure this could be a racial issue. But I really don't think it's about all that.
I think along the lines of many others on this post:
1. Records are made to be broken. They always will be broken. And there will always be people who hate the up and coming record-breakers.
2. While there may be many factors to Ruth's many homeruns, we could argue in the other direction - how many more homeruns could he have hit if he played today and could work out like today's athletes do??
3. It's a normal thing to compare Ruth and Bonds and not bring up Aaron yet because Ruth's record is the next on the list to attain.
4. Who is around anymore to say that Ruth played better than Bonds?? People who are older remember just how great Ruth was. For myself, I will always think Mike Schmidt could hit homeruns with consistency, if for no other reason, he played when I religiously followed the Phils. For me personally, Mike Schmidt's homeruns in 1980 brought good times to the Phils, good times for me and my family who followed them.
I did a post on Willie Mays last week when Mays turned 75. I read that he thought it might be him that was being chased right now by his godson Bonds, because Mays served two years in the Army in between his home-run hitting years. Had Mays hit the 80 homeruns he thought he might have if he hadn't servef, I think we would still be having these great debates, without all the racial innuendos.

Dead on SoCal. I wrote a post about this a week back, wondering why everyone was forgetting Aaron and claiming it "Ruth's record" Aaron is the home run leader, NOT Ruth.
Travis, first off I do not make claims that I do not back up. The post I put a link to was the first guy on here that said the Babe will always be the King. As for the cartoon, I have no idea where that comes from. That was just a google search for racism.
Josette, Schmidt could go long often and made it look effortless. As for Bonds, I have heard people bring up race, but even when they don't there are those who hold Babe Ruth just slightly below Jesus Christ. They in no way can accept someone else tarnishing his record. You hear them say things like Aaron doesn't hold it because he played in so many more games.
Dudski, if Aaron hits 40 often how can you say he wasn't the same threat as Bonds or Ruth. Ruth hit 59 which was his most ever. Aaron hit in the 40's several times. I don't have the stats with me right now.
MrNFL, I read that post. It helped inspire this one. Thanks.
Babe Ruth isn't the only player people think of as God.
Not to compare to baseball, but a coach could come along, win five Super Bowls in a row for the Bears, and unless he was God Almighty himself, I will still hold the highest regards for Mike Ditka.
Does that make sense, if the other coach outcoached "Da Coach"?? No.
There is a loyalty in following Ditka, and maybe in Ruth, and his record and his legacy. That has nothing to do with race.
Josette, I can see that to a degree, but if someone came along and won 5 super bowls for the Bears, you would say they hold the record. You might debate who is the better coach, but not debate their record.
Babe was a tremendous player with a legacy to match, but he is not the record holder any more. There are those who will not acknowledge that. They point to games played more seasons instead of just saying Aaron holds the record. Do you see that??
Socal, you can always be counted on to write about the controversial topics. You should probably try investigative sports journalism, it would be right up your alley.
Socal, you're right on the money about racism, which I'm sure was inspired by some of WesleyPowell's blogs.
I don't think racism is a large factor in Bonds' hatred, but I do think it's somewhat an innate factor. When I was a kid, my father and uncles used to tell me all kinds of baseball stories, but I didn't learn of Hank Aaron until I had been fed every Babe Ruth-was-awesome story in the book.
The fact that people are comparing Ruth and Bonds shows that they have a lot in common. It's extremely hard to try and quantify one's advantages and disadvantages, and I could argue 'til I'm out of breath with Bafongu that Bonds has it worse, and he vice versa with Ruth, but it's basically a pick with those two.
Again, you're right on the money, don't let anyone try and tell you otherwise. That is, unless they can back it up with facts. =)
Another factor to consider between Bambino and Bondino: The Babe was a YANKEE! You know, LA GRAN MANZANA, ese! How much more of Americana is that? And his name? Babe?
Hank was in Milwaukee and Atlanta, and a little of Beantown? I am too lazy to check. The Babe did it in the biggest city in the world. Mexico City and Tokyo don't count... I don't know about back then...
Of course, when or if Bonds approximates 750 HR's, then the Aaron talk will assuredly heat up...
Racism certainly was in Aaron's case but with Bonds its totally different. He is a subject of hate through the Steroid/BALCO scandal and his attitude (that is perceived by us and the media).
I wrote a blog earlier today on Ted Williams. I added him into the mix with Ruth and Bonds. Hope you can check it out. Cheers.
I have the fact that the reason Aaron is overlooked is because he just wasn't a flashy player or guy, not because he's black.
I have the fact that the reason people degrade Barry (mostly) is because he's a grade A jerk-off, not cuz he's black.
I have the fact that the reason Ruth is on such a pedastool is because he is the Michael Jordan of baseball, times about 1000. When people say that Kobe could very well be better than Jordan media types and people in general laugh, even though it may well be true. Is that due to racism? No, it's because Jordan is a larger thn life figure, like Babe Ruth.
And I have the fact that no one of any signifigance or credibility is saying that Ruth is the "real" home run king.
You have, well, some dude on here saying Babe's the "real home run king". And your race card, which you seem awfully willing to play. And not much else
Obviuosly, I'm the one with no substance to my arguement. And don't be lame and use my sarcasm and say "Yes, you do have no substance"
And in essense, I agree with alot of what you're saying, just look at my blog. I just hate the race card being played when there's no way in the world it should be
This post is why bloggers need to use numbers and hard stats to back up their "facts". You say it's a fact that Ruth faced weaker pitching during his era. How do you know? And more importantly, how does the reader know this as "fact" by your post? Are we just to assume you know what you're talking about and wouldn't lie to us or make up these facts? Instead, why not show us some numbers that back up your claim? It's called giving credibility to your work.
I'm not trying to hate on you SoCal. I haven't been around as much this time around, but you know from the first NGS that I enjoyed most of your posts and your writing in general. But this post bugged me with all the glittering generalities... especially considering that it dealt with such a controversial topic.
The way I see it. Barry Bonds is compared to Babe Ruth and not Hank Aaron for two main reasons: 1) Bonds is one away from Ruth's 714. He's still 32 HR's away from Aaron. Considering his numerous health issues, 755 may very well be unattainable for BB. 2) Barry Bonds, for better or worse, is the most recognizable name in baseball today. Babe Ruth is the most recognizable name in baseball history. The comparison is only natural, and has little to do with race IMO.
Finally, the reason Bonds is hated by most (at least those I converse with) is because he's a self-centered jerk, and those same people (like me) believe he's full of #### when he says he never used performance enhancers. But that's just those I talk to. I won't just assume why others hate him. I especially won't
Motor city, thanks for the comments. While you want facts, this is an opinion piece and facts are hard to prove in any racism debate. If you read the comments, they are split down the middle with people agreeing and disagreeing. That is fact enough that many people believe racism is a part of the Bonds hatred. I do not agree that it is all and all and in fact I point out it is Aaron who is being demeaned, not Bonds.
Bafongu, if it is personal attacks you want then write your own post and attack me. Comment to the substance of my post and your comments stay.
Travis you as much as said you agree, but yet you claim you have facts. ALl you said are opinions as well. MJ Is better than Kobe this and that, no way to prove, although I would agree on MJ, just not Babe.

Don't worry Socal, Bafongu's going elementary school on me, too, just check out WP's blog. Quite sad to see someone so intelligent stoop so low so as not to admit they may be wrong (emphasis on "may").
If there are statistics that prove how many people are racist, then I haven't seen them.
SoCal, I see what you're saying, but this is what you wrote in your article:
"Facts like the short porch in Yankee stadium where he hit most of his HR’s or facts like his lack of top quality pitchers to hit against."
Maybe you didn't mean to word it this way, but if it's a fact that Ruth hit against a lack of quality pitchers, show me some numbers that back up that claim.
99% of sports columns are opinion pieces, or editorials if you will. But the ones that are most credible are those based in numbers and proven fact, not speculation and glittering generalities.
Again, I'm not hating on you - just stating my opinion. You don't have to agree.
I'm way more afraid of Barry taking Aaron's record than passing Ruth. I cringed when he passed Mays, I'll cringe when he passes Ruth and I'll vomit if he passes Aaron.
Outside of the racist wackos in supremacy groups, people just don't see color in sports. That's why Michael Jordan is the most popular athlete of all-time.
First off I like your post except for one bald assumption:
Merely asserting Ruth faced a paucity of skilled pitchers and fielders is oft-repeated nonsense.
18 Hall Of Fame pitchers in two 8 team leagues, and 41% of all fielders inducted into the HOF.
If the pitchers were so weak why did they pitch on less rest, have fewer pitchers in the starting rotation, and rack up more innings and strikeouts?
Why didn't everyone else hit them out like Ruth?
Why were the mounds higher?
Ruth hit gargantuan home runs according to journalists of his day and quite frankly devaluing Ruth to deflect Bonds use of steroids is lame.
Mays and Aaron are black, so is Bonds, only Ruth is white, so how is pointing out based on 12 consistent years from 1986 to 1997 Bonds demonstrated no discernable power or hitting skill to pass Mays let alone Ruth or even catch Aaron? I don't care about white guilt, nor is anyone who dares to point the blitheringly obvious automatically racist they aren't germane to the issue Bonds cheated his way past these immortals using steroids, plain and simple. No subtext, hidden agenda, or anything else. What part of steroids concerns race?
You conveniently left out Ruth's dominace as a pitcher where he twice won 20 games and had the World Series scoreless inning record for 30 years. Name one other player who has dominated as both a hitter and a pitcher? Im waiting. You also left out Barroid has had over 1000 more ab's than Ruth. Aaron, who never hit 50 in a year, had 4000 more ab's. Let me say that again, Aaron needed 4000 ab's more than Ruth to pass him in homers. And lest we forget, Ruth hit more homeruns than TEAMS. Babe Ruth is not only the greatest homerun hitter ever, hes the best player the sport has ever seen. Its not even close and any argument otherwise looks foolish.
When Mr, Steriod himself Mark went for the single season record who throw at him and was basically cheered for doing it, alot more than 1 or two people cheered in that crowd rasism is alive and well and it brings the game down. Racism starts in most news rooms with the good ole boy network we call sports writers
I hate Barry because, he's a steroid junkie that plays for the SF Giants, thats the only reason I hate him. I don't care if he's white, black, yellow, red, brown, or blue, I don't care. I hate "him" not his color. I think WP and SoCal play the race card too much.
I hated Big Mac also, he was white but I hated him for the fact he was in the running for all time homers as a Cardinal. With the other two steroid junkies Bonds and Sosa. Someone I don't hate Ken Griffey Jr., there's a ball player boys and girls.
Good post. I agree. Aaron is getting overlooked by all of this. A lot of people don't even know how many home runs Aaron hit all time. I think it's sad that people would want MLB to celebrate for 2nd best. I can't think of any other sport that does that. With the heavy hitters that are coming up now, you may say that A-Rod and Pujols could be next on chasing the record. So, if Babe becomes 4th, 5th or 6th on the list, do you still celebrate it? A big joke if you ask me
Hi Socal, I agree that Aaron's name should be mentioned whenever the subject of Bonds passing Ruth comes up. He's not going to pass Ruth's record, Ruth doesn't own the record any more.
However, I don't believe the reason is racism, at least not for the most part. I simply think the Bonds/Ruth thing is being hyped to generate attention, and when and if Bonds ever approaches Aaron's record, the media attention and resulting pressure will be so intense, what's going on now will seem like a walk in the park by comparison....
Thanks for commenting to all who did. Half, I agree that Aaron should be mentioned more and when you see those come out and start spouting stats like Aaron had 4000 more at bats to pass up Babe, you see how these old timers hate that someone passed up there beloved Babe. I don't think any of them were around to see Babe hit one yet they say what a great pitcher he was and hitter. Conveniently leaving out that BAbe stopped pitching in 1920, and that is when he became a hitter. Babe only pitched for 4 full seasons. He may have been a great pitcher, but if Maddux pitched for 4 seasons, no one would be talking about it. Also, the argument for quality pitching is because they pitched 9 innings or more is exactly the reason their arms were so tired and proves my point. Anyone who thinks the pitchers of that era were superior is delusional. And just because they all made the HOF, its because there was no one else, baseball was still in its infancy.
Hill, thanks for the input.
Bafongu, name calling will get you know where. Ruth hit 344 HR in Yankee stadium, more than any other stadium in his career. Fact, the short porch was 295 feet. I can hit one out in that.
Motorcity, to say it was a fact he had a short porch is true. How is that a not substantiated? Also to say he never faced closers, middle relievers, and setup men, is also true. They did not exist in that era. I am baffled by what stats you want because they did not exist much the same way gold gloves were not awarded back then.
Lastly, to all the Bonds haters, re read the post and see where I say that the racism is against Aaron. I admit Bonds is hated for a variety of reason including his personality and those who perceive him as a cheater, but not to acknowledge Aaron as the all time HR leader is motivated in part by a hate for anyone of color to pass Ruth. People constantly talk about the at bats and ball parks as if to diminish Aaron's accomplishments. Aaron was a great hitter who had a terrific career. He was blessed to stay healthy enough to pass Ruth. HE PASSED RUTH. He is the king for now.
Good stuff. I actually read an article where they polled BBWAA members and many said they would not vote him in first ballot as a "protest to the steroid era." A grandstanding protest? A valiant stand for percieved injustices? Racism? All three? None of the above? Who knows what lies in every man's heart (pompous, I admit)
I absolutely agree he's a FB HOF'er despite the fact that I can't stand him. Not from any racist POV but the fact that he didn't listen to anyone when they told him to take a step up and left when Francisco F'n cabrera hit that single that ruined my baseball life in the '92 NLCS. I thought I was over it.
Sorry, I came in late to the game on this one. But, this piece was just about playing the race card where there is none, or very little at best. Nobody but one dude on here is calling Ruth "the real home run leader". The numbers don't lie; Aaron's the record holder, period. Nobody's talking about Aaron because Bonds isn't about to break Aaron's mark, he's about to break Ruth's. Period. Playing the race card where there in none just demeans people who have to deal with real racism.
I know kfalv mentioned this first, but Ruth's dominance as a pitcher are what make him THE greatest baseball player ever. We can argue for infinity the points back and forth about the different eras, and who had what advantages or disadvantages, and it all pretty much breaks even. It's true that Ruth was a beneficiary of his era by being able to switch from being a dominant pitcher to a power hitter; that's not impossible in today's game, but very unlikely. But still, there it is -- he's held records at both positions, and neither Aaron nor Bonds have. Babe was a big ol' fat guy and all, but he was a tremendous athlete. My favorite Barry-hater sign that's being held up: "Ruth Did It On Hot Dogs And Beer". Once Barroid hits 715, we'll probably see him play about 30 more games this season, maybe more if the Giants are in the race at the end. There's not a chance he'll come close to Aaron; the guy can barely walk as it is. He'll retire after this year.

By the way, edclinch: when talking about the horrors of racism, you might not want to use the word "mulatto", call Hispanics "morenos", and talk about Asians having "kung fu power". Geez!
