First there was Cleopatra and Anthony. Then there was Napoleon and Josephine. George and Martha Washington have to be included because we need some Americans but we can not forget my most famous Couples of all, Freddie. (I would also like to throw in my favorite blogging couple, GOT and JustRandy, you can figure out all the symbolism necessary and maybe I will add my version of how they would look later on this afternoon. )
I love to play golf and I will even admit that I enjoy watching it on a Sunday afternoon. There is nothing more relaxing to me than to lie down on the couch on a Sunday afternoon and fall asleep watching golf. Tiger is fun to watch, but my fan favorite is Couples. He overcame some type of food poisoning or bug this week and shot an opening round 65 at the Nissan Open just up the road from me at Riviera Country Club in LA. This is one of the most prestigious tournaments that a golfer can win and the only one that Tiger has never won when he has entered it more than three times. It is ironic that Tiger suffered from a flu bug and withdrew in his home town tourny while Freddie moves on and is in perfect position to win today. I for one am routing for Boom Boom, as he once was called, to win in style. His effortless swing is beautiful to behold and I enjoy seeing the guys in their 40's win on tour. (Makes me think I still have a shot at 42! Laughter from my wife behind me.)
Winning today will not be easy as Sabbatini has a four stroke lead, but this is one tough tournament to win as Tiger will attest. The LA Open is famous for being Hogan's Alley who won this tournament in 1942 and was the runner up in 1946 and 1950. Both times Hogan lost was to future HOF Sam Snead. Freddie has won this tournament twice. He won in 1990 and 1992. If he wins again today, maybe they should rename it to Couples Lane.
You already have a picture of us. It was at a toga party. I think maybe you thought that was Cleopatra and Anthony but you can tell that wass me. I was pretty wasted at the time and about to throw up. Anyway, thanks for the free publicity, I need it!
Freddie won his first major at the Master's and about that time along came the likes of Jose Marie and Nick Faldo. Daly also won his first during those years and then the last 8 years you have Tiger. He has been a bit unfortunate in that regard, but also his back has long been his problem. Either way, he is enjoyable to watch and I for one always root for him and Davis Love III.
I also feel Freddie may just win the Master's this year.....little prognisticating here.

I am also a Couples fan. And I share your sentiments about weekend TV sports - I dont care what it is - it puts me to sleep. It seems like Keith Jackson put me to sleep more times than my own mother.
Being from southern CA have you been to the Nissan/LA Open? It's a nice event. I was visiting LA for work and went to the gate to see if I could scalp a ticket on Sunday in 2003. I was pleasantly suprised that I could walk up to the gate and purchase a ticket. It wasnt sold out. There must be too much other stuff going on in CA. Nice venue - I posted right behind #11 (par 5) and got to watch all the big guns hit the driver. Good stuff.
Favotite couples: Lou Lloyd and Chris Everett? I thought that was a match made in heaven.
JK, but I like the coincidence of last names
(1986 Houston Rockets)
Dan, Freddie has been steadily playing well the last two years as his back has allowed, but he is the king of making money in November and Dec.
Thanks for the comments ed.
I myself missed the final round, playing golf here in FLA...*sigh...I love watching Freddie swing the club, and he's a gentleman to boot. Yes, for all the talent we all know he has,
I would like him to have won more Majors, that said, something has to be said for his place as a peoples Champion! Yeah!!!Freddie!
Great post! Having been born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, people have always expected me to be not only interested, but totally into alpine sports. If you ask me, (50% Norwegian, 25% Danish, 25% German) the reason you don’t see people, “of color”, in the Olympics; INTELLIGENCE!
