We're #66! Ohio State Wins(poor word choice) NIT
Apr 04, 2008 | 8:29AM | report this

'THE' Ohio State mens basketball team took home the NIT trophy last night.  That's exactly what they did, took it home.  The trophy wasn't necessarily won, since the NIT Champion is now officially the 66th best team in the country and will crow, "See, we should have been in March Madness."

It was like watching Bowling on ESPN Classic...why?

Apparently the Buckeyes defeated a UMASS team that was depleted by graduation and Ivy League candidates.  Congratulations on your 'trophy', Buckeyes.  Don't hate on me.  My guys won it in '96, yet I felt empty and happy to have seen a few more games on ESPN7.

The NIT tourney winner receives the equivalent of a 4th grader's participation trophy and an Eric Cartman doll.  Why is there a NIT tournament anyway?  One fourth of all NCAA Division I teams are in the tourney, so why dumb it down. (ok more exist, but are really bad.)

Even worse is an unnamed tournament that picks teams AFTER the NIT field.  Yes sports fans, this bottom feeding tournament exists.

113 teams play in post-season tournaments.

Unfortunately college basketball is too watered down to enjoy anything but March Madness.  There's greed and then there's the 66th seed.  Stop the insanity.  The NIT has been a non-event since the NCAA tourney expanded to 64+ teams.

Hey Ohio State, there better not be a parade or t-shirts celebrating this great achievement.  I hope your mamas come up and slap you for embarrassing them on semi-national-regional-PBS television. "My baby plays point guard for Syracuse...oh, your child won the NIT.  I'm so sorry for you.  Oh, the shame!"   The kid who dots the 'i' has more to be proud of than this big win.

I do have a suggestion; put that NIT trophy in a dark, athletic department closet, right next to Tom Cruise.

Joker...unless your team is in the NIT, it's a joke to the sport. Been there, cheered for that.

We're all basketball jonesing right now. At least after the Monday final, The Masters begins.

husk....We Gamecocks have cornered the market in being #1A, I mean #66. I believe 'THE' USC has won the NIT 3 times in the last 6 or 7 years. It is quickly unremembered in 24 hours or so. Can we change the NIT to the BFD?

Sorry, but I beg to differ. The event helps fans and students alike. And Ohio State can claim top 30 status now, at least.

I wrote about the historicity of the NIT a few articles ago.

College basketball is good.

That is my opinion.

13 losses shouldn't get any team into the Big Dance. Top 30? They'd have been in March Madness if they'd been that good. This year, the Big Ten didn't go deep in the tourney.

This blog is stupid as is your reasoning behind it anytime teams can get a chance to play at a tournament level it can only bring good things to them the following season as far as experience and pace of play it gives unproven freshman a chance to see what its like to be in a big game atmosphere.

That un-named tournament after the NIT is selected, I read an article about it. The Washington Huskies played in this tournament and had to pay $60,000 to do so. I beleive they were one and done. Could have bought a few books for that.

Thanks for your thoughts Greatfull.
Should EVERY team get to play in a season ending tournament? Wait, most do in conference tournaments.

Are you ever going to write a brief post yourself or just criticize everyone else?

degraff, there was a sweet write up on March Madness in the Dallas Morning News today. It seems teams advancing to the Final Four are contractually obligated to buy blocks of rooms at oasis locations known as airports. Some teams go in the hole by going to the Final Four. Texas had to eat the cost of rooms no one would stay in during the 2003 tourney. Fewer and fewer tickets reach the schools. Seems the lovely NCAA is selling them to re-sellers.

slshusker: There are now 120 NCAA DI football teams. They have 32 bowl games. Over 50% of the teams play in a bowl. In NCAA basketball you have over 300 teams. Only 65 get invited to the REAL tournament. 32 to the NIT and, what? 16 to the CBI? That is a grand total of 113 out of 300+ teams. Sure there are 15 conferences in NCAA basketball that really aren't worthy of DI status, but........ they are DI. On the other hand we have Bob Knight and Jim Boeheim arguing for a 128 team NCAA basketball tourney? 128 teams!!!!! Yes it would only mean 1 more game, but 128 teams? Every year there are only about 10 to 16 teams that even deserve a shot, much less................ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY EIGHT!

As for the NIT being 'meaningless'? I don't think it is as bad you as you are saying. The winner of the NIT is more than likely a top 30 team.

NOS, plenty say the NIT winner is a Top 30 team. Why? The conference champs and at large bids pick up the teams throughout the rankings.

The NIT takes us to 97 teams. That's about 1 of 3 in post season games.

Again, unless your team is in the NIT, are you watching? How much is too much.

As for the Bowl Games, it's oversatureated too.

I was just trying to make a sorry #### argument a little bit valid. You are absolutely right. The NIT is like kissing your sister. What does that make the CBI? Like nailing your best friends grandmother? Tulsa vs. Bradley? I like the best of 3 format, but........who wants to see these two teams play ONCE let a lone 3 times?

Nos, I would like a pic of your friend's grandmother. degraff may want her digits.

This post was intended to stir up the NIT team's fans.

NOS, the CBI, which I called 'un-named' has the best final game. It is best of three as you noted. I'd like to see that format for the NCAA's. It's not like these players go to class anyway. This tourney took the 16 teams deemed not good enough for the NIT.

Dang...this was funny as hell Huskers. The dotted "i" guy is mortified that he had to witness this NIT, but at least the parquet floors are too small for him to do his thing. NIT, by the way, is a lice egg. Go figure.
