Big Shot Bob: Welcome To The NBA Hall Of Fame Mr. Horry
Jun 16, 2007 | 11:21AM | report this

Seven NBA Championship rings sum it up.

x 7  Can You Dig It!!!!!!

Robert Horry is the only non-Celtic, circa 1960, to earn 7 rings.

        EQUALS ?

A classic big body defender, Horry cemented his reputation for the big shots, and was appropriately nicknamed Big Shot Bob.

NBA Championships:

Rockets - 94, 95

Lakers   - 2000, 2001, 2002  (Three Peat was my idea, I swear!)

Spurs - 2005, 2007

The bad news for your team is that Horry isn't ready to retire.  Face the facts, we all want players like Robert on our teams.  There aren't enough to go around.

Robert Horry, Version 2007, will be remembered for his mad hockey skills, putting Steve Nash into the boards during the West Conference Finals. (Weeeeeeeeeeee! A Canadian amusement park ride)

In the 2007 playoffs, Horry averaged 20 minutes, was seen clogging the clogging the defensive lane, and made timely blocks.

Like most success stories, Horry's NBA Championships almost never happened.    Horry was in a package trade with Detroit for Sean Elliot, who didn't pass the team physical and the trade was terminated.  Horry stayed a Rocket.  Horry signed with the Lakers for their Three-Peat and saved plenty of games with clutch shooting.  This is when he received his nickname, Big Shot Bob. Horry signed with San Antonio after the 2003 Championship and has been a winner and comsumate team player.  The rest is now NBA folklore.

Trivia:  A certain show business star is uncle to both Robert Horry and Cavs center, Anderson Varejao.

Knowing this trivia fact should win a few bar bets.

huskers.....now gosh darn it, I didn't know the trivia about a non-Celtic winning 7 rings, and I am a Celtic fan. That's kewl! Verajao actually looks handsome in the pic.....and I don't like long hair on guys. (prefer the classic Clooney look)

Great post!

Lisa...hello sunshine.

I am also a Celts fan. Daddy put me on them.
Mom was a UCLA fan. A Wooden fan, actually.

7 Rings is a holy grail number.

My first word was "hondo"...before I said dada or momma, it was hondo. Go figure.

My mom went to ucla, dad went to Mich State undergrad (golf scholarship), USC film school for a masters and got another masters (MBA) from USC....they divorced after 17 years. I learned from that and married a Trojan fan. Hee hee.

I can't see Horry in the Hall. He's got seven rings because he played with Hakeem, Shaq and Timmy. He's a smart guy when picking a center, not a Hall of Famer.

If he gets in, so should Horace Grant and Steve Kerr and Dennis Rodman. Right? If all we count is rings and not your actual play.

KK, I understand your thought process.
I'm not a homer on this.
The magic number is 7.
HOF voters remember timely events. The evolution of the nickname is why I think Horry's a slam dunk with the voters. No Horry, No Three-Peat.

The Hall of Fame for sure, man the guy just gets it done during the playoffs, Big shot killed my kings one year when we shoulda couda won our only championship, I hate him!!!!!!!!

I'd put Rodman in before him. Rodman started and played more minutes and was an all defensive player. Horry was very good and made lots of timely shots, but its easier to shoot with a Hall of Fame Center on your team.

Vearl...I was just on your Blog!

Ah yes, Bob killed a few hearts in his time.
I say the HOF voters will key on this.

KK, I think Bob may get in before Rodman. I loved Rodmans playing style. The Worm. Another great and worthy nickname. The media will remember him for his #### kick, too.

I think Horry has the most interesting Hall of Fame case of all time. As a player, he's been a bit player, an occassional starter, the consumate role player. I mean, the guy has averaged 7 points and 5 reounds for his career, and even less than that in the playoffs. Those are hardly Hall of Fame numbers. However, those numbers are pretty comparable to K.C. Jones, who is in the Hall basically because he was a bit player on the greatest dynasty ever. If Jones is in, Horry's got to be in.

xphoenix87 Horry is a great test case, isn't he.
Championships wouldn't have been won without him, many would.

Want him on your team?
With modern media recordings the case can be made for Horry. A nice montage would sway voters.

One of my sidekicks is diehard NCS fan.
I love saying, "The highlight of your team is an airball." He eats it up and switches the talk to the Steelers.

Good post husker.

I'm a big fan of Robert Horry. He hit some very clutch baskets for my Lakers and he really is a class act. It was a shame to hear all the merecenary talk after the shot he put on Nash.

I don't think it was intentional to the point that he meant to hurt him or create mayhem.

7 rings. I think that equals Hall of Fame.

Horry in the HOF? Please. That would be like saying that John Paxson was better than Charles Barkley. Number of shots Paxson hit to win a title: 1 Number of shots Barkely hit to win a title: 0

Does this mean that Jeff Hostetler (one ring) was better than Dan Marino (no rings)?

Hoffman, the forearm shiver will be remembered more strongly by Suns fans, like...Ricko.

Ricko- "And the magic number shall be 7, not three, not two." The names you mentioned will likely reach the HOF, too. Hey, you're in Phoienix! You're a Horry hater right now.

I agree with KKFromBK. If Horry gets in, so should Horace Grant, Dennis Rodman and Steve Kerr. I think all of them were arguably better players, and they each have several rings. Check out Horry's career statistics. Look at the most comparable players. You get names like Kurt Rambis, Derrick McKey, Chris Morris, Oliver Miller, A.C. Green and Rick Mahorn. Anybody want to start arguing that any of those guys should be in? Of course not. Would it make a difference if any of those guys had 7 rings? I don't think so. Being a role player on a great team doesn't make you a great player.

Horry si the greatest clutch shooter of all time. do the math: find one Hall of famer with an many big game shots. This isnt a Hostetler versus marino, this is 7 rings to 0. he contributed in every championship. the Hall of Fame homers will wanna keep him out because the hall of fame is where they go to #### over statistics. but Horry is the greatest 6th man EVER. subtract Horry from ever championship team... do they make it to the finals?

Horry has had one hell of a career. I've been a fan since his college days at Alabama.

HOF? Tough one to call for me.

But I would err on the side of yes, if I were the deciding vote.

Demon, thanks for jumping and adding some thoughts. I ignored the NFl comparison. Wasn't worth it for me. You said it well.

Mean, I followed Bob with the Rockets in 93+. Playing with Hakeem made me think they were the real twin towers.

JQP, it's a discussion point. HOF voting isn't done till what, 5 years after retirement. The reality of '7' rings will set in. Only our Celts players can claim that distinction.
Holy Schneike, what if Bob gets another ring with the Spurs; it could happen.
Do we then say, "Nah, you have 8 rings, but aren't good enough for the HOF."

Hall of Fame voting isn't fair, yet what is in life. Championships count. Why are so many Steelers from the glory years in the F'ball HOF? They didn't all have stellar stats. The rings get you in the HOF.

Rings shouldn't get you into the Hall of Fame unless you were one of the leaders on your team. Horry has never been more than a complementary player. If he'd spent his career playing for teams like the Clippers, Nuggets or Grizzlies we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

Husker-I'm not actually an Horry hater. Raja Bell did the same thing to Kobe last year, so I know how things happen in the heat of battle. It was how it was handled that was wrong. The refs/league let it get a little chippy early in the series. If Bowen had been suspended for kneeing Nash, like I think he should have, the Horry incident doesn't happen, in my opinion.

As for Horry, I just get tired of hearing the first thing people bring up being the number of championships a player won as criteria for HOF worhiness. It's a team sport. I can't make it any plainer than that. Terry Bradshaw won four titles, same as Joe Montana. Does anyone think they're equal?

Ricko, I understand.

I picked this as a hot button issue.
The career stats are lacking, yet 5 years after Horry's retirement, the media will be beating this 7 ring horse. It's hard to be a smart #### all the time. Well, no it isn't.

I disagree that Bradshaw is equal to Montana for one reason. Comebacks. Montana has many more comebacks then him. Horry has a similar case if you look at it.

husker, times are a-changin for my wolfpack. We got incredibly lucky with the Sidney Lowe hiring. Mark my words, the Pack are back. Keep an eye on Brandon Costner next basketball season, he's ready to blow up onto the national radar.

demonicume - Horry gets referred to as the greatest clutch shooter because that's really the only standout thing about him. For my money, I'll take MJ, Bird or West, among others, for the greatest clutch shooter.

Horry is among the 5 greatest role players of all time, and maybe the best ever. He's not a star, but he's a great piece on a winning team. Probably the strongest endorsement I could give is that if I wanted to build a winner, I'd rather have Robert Horry than Vince Carter.

I would lean towards not putting him in the Hall, except for the fact that basically all the players from the 50s-60s Celtics dynasty are in there. If K.C. Jones is in the Hall, Horry absolutely and unarguably has to be in there also.

XPhoenix87 and all: The Basketball Hall of Fame is a different animal and is the Crazy Uncle of HOFs. Voting is done in private. The HOF inducts international players, men, women, sportscasters, etc. Stats aren't necessary. If you've done good for the game, you'll usually get in. I think Artis Gilmore is the biggest name NOT in the Basketball HOF.

You beat me to it, I was gonna write my own blog about Horry's potential HOF status.

Personally I think he clearly deserves in if for no other reason than his amazingly clutch shots all throughout his career. That said, most analysts agree that while he's a great player, he's not HOF material.

Horry is not a Hall Of Famer. He's been a good role player. He's not that good a player. As a Rockets player, we fans thought he'd be the next Scottie Pippen. He wasn't. He'd show up for the playoffs, but there were too many 10pt 4 rebound efforts. That almost got him traded to Detroit in the 95 championship season. It did get him packaged in the Barkley deal a couple of years later. Nice guy, nice player, far from a Hall Of Famer. Great example of being in the right place at the right time.

Bob is a first ballot all star. The best move the Pistons ever tried to make was shipping Elliot out of town for Bob...Who's to say that Bob wouldn't have gotten those rings in Detroit? Nah...you're right, he wouldn't have.

What are the odds that side-show Varejo will be a first ballot all star?

Laker & Dr.Midnight.
The BBall HOF is the weird HOF.
It's not stat driven like the Baseball and Football HOF. I did some checking on the Basketball HOF last year, after researching Artis Gilmore. The Basketball HOF answers to no one and is anonymous on voting.

Flying Pig...history would be different for all if Sean had moved to Houston. Didn't he end up a Spur?

SLS, I agree in the way that the BBALL HOF isn't as stat driven as the baseball one. Who even knows what the Football HOF is driven on anymore?

I agree that he was a roleplayer throughout his career, but he wasn't your average roleplayer. He was the roleplayer that made a difference, that stepped up in truly championship or bust situations, and the history of about 4 teams was drastically changed by Big Shot Bob be it because they were on the recieving end of his clutch baskets, or because said clutch baskets got em a ring.
