Sure we`re all sick of hearing about the status or lack there of on Sammy Sosa attempting to take up space on the Nats roster or retire. Before you think I`m just gonna pile on, is it that wrong for a guy who batted .221 and battled more injuries to walk away? Yes it`s obvious his batting average and power numbers tumbled after 2001`s .327 64HR/160RBI-(How crazy are those #`s!) Basically Sammy was respectable until his attitude forced him outta Chicago and to the lowly Baltimore O`s where they collect old washed up DH types. It`s really a shame Sammy left the Chicago Cubs on such terrible terms. If anyone shoulda retired as a Cub since 1975 it was Sammy Sosa.(Sandberg retired twice-doesn`t count!) Unfortunately he has no one to blame but himself. Can`t even pin that one solely on Dusty Baker. Now the debate on if the know it all writers will grant him membership to Cooperstown after the cork incident and an obvious stretch of juiced up years.(66HR`s/63/50/64/49)-from 1998 until 2002. He helped save the game of MLB chasing and admiring another home run legend the embattled Mark McGwire. But the focus and strikes against will always be on the strong su####ion Sammy sosa was juiced outta his mind. To that I say he is in the exact same boat as another aging slugger who was once a fast, skinny OF for the Pittsburgh Pirates. McGwire started his career as a HR threat 49 his first full season, before adding on super human muscle mass. As for Sosa I applaud him for hangin em up rather than put on those silly Nats uni`s and fail. The best thing he can do to repent is give back to his native land and help youngsters play the game the right way. He deserves his spot in the HOF, it`s just gonna take several years of voting to be forgiven.
A recent Sporting News article showed sour ####, poor sport, cry baby Jeff Weaver suppousedly excercising(Laughing, right Jeff ) as part of the Scott Borass master plan for his clients. It was one of the funniest things I`ve seen since Marlins ownership promised to stay commited to the city of Florida. Jeff Weaver is blessed with a resiliant and durable right arm, no heart or intelligence to want to learn or get better. Looking back, he was the one time lowly Detroit Tigers "ace" Then he washed out so bad as a NY Yankee including a game winning W.S. blast that may not have landed yet he was banished to the NL. Being in the NL worked, b/c it still favors pitching or at least lets other starters avoid big innings and pitch counts by making them try to hit. Pitching in the best pitchers park around Ol Dodger Stadium Weaver was around .500, but very durable 200+ IP`s and many quality starts(What kinda dork stat is that?) Thanks, I`ll stick to W`s & L`s evaluating starters. Jeff Weaver just doesn`t get it and he`ll never be anything but a skinny, wild hair side armin bum who is now faced with no team left willing to throw huge money at him. Not even pitching poor Texas or Baltimore would fall for that. As for the pictures in that article. A frown on Weavers ugly #### with a long sleave sweater on and brand new, un-broken in black sneakers tells the story. He hasn`t worked hard, never will and is as familiar with the inside o####ym as a winning record. Sorry Dream Weaver no soup for you!
It`s not that I disliked relief pitcher Bruce Sutter, but selecting him as the only inductee this year for the baseball hall of fame is just another swing and a miss. To his credit, Sutter was a very good reliever, even won a Cy Young award in 1979 (Who`d he beat out Randy Jones?) Silly Cubbies hate holding on to those CY Young winners huh? He is also referenced as the modern day "father" of the splitter, won a world series in St. Louis. Speaking of which, how many have they won since? But in a HOF class the annoying baseball writers described as week, they again showed how baseball does so many things wrong. Sutter in no way was better than Goose Gossage-fact. Saves, world series won, strikeouts, ect. Punishing the likes of Jim Rice for being anti-social...hell he was a #### man who played in Boston! Andre Dawson, Dale Murphy and Jack Morris because their numbers in the 1980`s were before the boom of the 90`s. Shame on you MLB once again. The point of a HOF class is to celebrate these men while they are still with us and allow their fans to reminice about those days. For me the 1980`s was my introduction to the game and watching Dawson, Murphy & Morris as well as many more stars of that era. Instead you downgrade their careers and banish them to the not so great status that would be better placed on druggies(Rod Scurry) or lousy players(Lenn Sakata) from any era. If Sutter after 13 years of waiting is suddenly good enough to gain enterance now why not Willie Hernandez who chalked up a CY Young/MVP & World Series in 1984 or Lee Smith...hell even Jeff Reardon could steal his way in. Relievers as HOF material is just not worthy. Can`t wait to see the further insult the Veterans Comittee elects, like some player who passed away prior to 1950. Stirring election speach there perhaps by Hoss Radburn the fourth!!
Why in the hell did the the St Louis Cardinals actually sign big fat Sidney Ponson??? His claim to fame or infamy is the DWI`s & fights he gets into to. So this 6-1 253lbs(Right...try 275) junkballer from the O`s is gonna help get the Cardinals further than the last two years. Please, Dave Duncan could be a magician but he won`t stop Ol Sid from drinkin, stayin fat & being a losing pitcher. Why any team, let alone the respectable Cardinals would hand over millions to this slob is beyond me. The Cards have a solid front four in Carpenter, Mulder, Marquis & Suppan. Why not use that money to retain Matt Morris? Hell, buy as much Budweiser possible for $8 million dollars and it`s better spent than having a big fat loser like Ponson polute your clubhouse. Enjoy Tony LaRussa & Co. the chances of big Sid staying sober in St Louis are about the same as your team winning it all...no chance!!!!! You owe an apology to the greatest fans in the game for bringing in that fat tub of ERA, shame on you St Louis.
