The NHL Preason Picks - Western Conference
Sep 29, 2006 | 9:18AM | report this

WEST

Central

Nashville – 120pts – Not much reason to doubt they build on last year’s result. Coach of the Year Barry Trotz.

Columbus – 95 pts – Offensive strengths will carry them, look for a big year for Carter.

Detroit – 85 pts – The wrong guys retired/left this year, Hasek won’t survive and the young guys are still a year away from dominating.

Chicago - 80 pts – 10 wins hang in the balance of the story of Ruutu’s health. Odd’s are against a happy ending.

St. Louis – 75 pts – Vastly improved with addition of McKee and Weight, but far from contending.

Pacific

Anaheim – 105 pts – Deepest team out there, Kunitz is the best kept secret in the league.

San Jose – 95 pts – Uninspiring defencemen the only thing standing between them and a cup run.

Los Angeles – 85 pts – A Clutier injury hangover makes me wary, as does the lack of an Avery trade.

Dallas – 75 pts – Curse of the Lindros, Turco the only thing standing between them and the basement.

Coyotes – 65 pts – Roster looks like a late 90’s all-star team, and that’s not a compliment.

Northwest

Calgary – 100pts – There’s a likely all-star at every single position.

Minnesota – 90pts – Aside from Gaborik its all steak, and no sizzle, meaning they will win the boring way.

Vancouver – 85pts – Huge upgrade in goal, but for the first time their season now hinges on the Sedins.

Colorado – 80pts – Sakic is done, Wolski, Svatos and Stastny will decide if they squeak into the playoffs or not.

Edmonton – 70 pts – They downgraded a roster that masterfully over-achieved last season, MacT can only do so much.

TOP 2 TEAMS COME PLAYOFF TIME:

Anaheim & Nashville

EAST CHAMPS:

Nashville Predators

Buffalo/Nashville in the finals? Sounds damn good to me. Frankly I'm sick and tired of seeing Dallas/Detroit/Colorado and New Jersey/Philadelphia/Ottawa surviving late in the finals. Your analysis of East and West are short and sweet, a pleasure to read, and hopefully accurate. Great post.

Thanks Chaas, glad you liked it.

I'm a big fan of parity and shaking things up. Lucky for us the salary cap looks to guarantee some pretty inconsistant results year to year.

As good as it is to see the smaller market teams do well, I think the NHL is probably praying that they don't get another small market final. Somehow though, that seems to happen quite a bit and the suits all cry themselves to sleep at night because of the low ratings.

Who wins between Nashville and Buffalo by the way?

Who knows, I'll just pick the Sabres for the heck of it. Please ignore the Buffalo hat, jersey and flag behind me.

Actually, I was hesitant to even pick conference winners. It's obviously much easier to assess the team's long-term chances in the regular season than it is to guess how hot they'll be for a few games in the spring.

hey detroit, thanks for the invite, unfortunately I wasn't near a computer for the last few days.

NY and Calgary, can't argue with those picks. A few tweaks to the lineups and both of those teams can dominate.

I am a Sabres fan, a Cubs fan, a Boilermakers fan, a Ti-cat fan and a Hamilton Bulldogs fan. I'm an obvious sucker for punishment. I believe that while playing them can be a tolerable way to kill 5 hours, there is nothing more painful than talking golf or watching poker. There's no excuse for fantasy football, no matter how bored or lonely you are. I don't consider you an athelete unless you can beat me in a race to the corner and back. I'm landlocked and terrible, but I carry on an irrational love affair with surfing. We are in the midst of one of the greatest horseracing years in decades.
