Introduction

“We have a right to honest football games,” quoth Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA).

Excellent, now we will have the Feds assuring us “honest” football games. The government of the United States is now and from hence forth will be directing resources generated by the labor of Americans everywhere to ensuring will have “honest football games.”

Never mind that we have a War on Terror costing us billions to fight with no clearly defined objective, never mind that we have a sluggish economy which is going to be “stimulated” by a poorly-planned and useless economic “package.” Never mind that we habeas corpus is being violated routinely by our own government (an issue we fought a war over). Never mind that in order to fight “terrorism” Americans are going to be scrutinized, examined, and approved by Federal officials and files on each one of us will be collected, maintained, and proliferated to the various states through the Real ID Act.

Never mind any of that, what’s really important is that Federal authorities guarantee our “right to honest football games.”

A Joke Gone too Far

A couple weeks ago I wrote a few posts on Congress and the President taking action against the New England Patriots. They did so because of the dangerous precedent set by letting Congress investigate steroid usage in baseball and prepare to regulate that sport.

I sincerely hope Arlen Specter does not waste further tax payer money while he’s at work by reading my blog because shortly thereafter he actually began the process of intervening in football. He wanted to know why the NFL had destroyed the video tapes and why the penalties against the New England Patriots were not harsher (like what? Give the Eagles a Super Bowl ring?).

Way back when all these steroid scandals were hitting the papers I was one of the ones who said this was dangerous. When Congress called before them baseball players to question them about their usage of drugs I said they had gone too far. Most everyone disagreed. After all this is what they deserved, those smug millionaires defacing “our” sport. Most salivated with the thought that their government was going to prosecute these cheaters.

They dismissed my (and plenty of others) calls for caution as a ridiculous slippery slope argument. This is as far as they’ll go, they said, no farther.

It was Only a Matter of Time

Well, now they have gone farther. First, they used the excuse that steroids are illegal drugs to begin the investigation, then they said they were lied to so they needed to go farther, then they said they needed to protect kids so they went farther (sound familiar? Weapons of Mass Destruction, Liberating the Iraqi People, Spreading Democracy).

Now, they are going after football. This has nothing to do with the use of illegal substances, this has nothing to do with perjury, this has only to do with our “right to honest football games.”

So now we have arrived at the stage where the Federal Government is preparing to directly intervene in the affairs of a major sports league in order to ensure our “right to honest football games.” The only question now is, how will they do it? What are their plans to make sure football stays honest?

Well, here’s how I think the process is going to go.

Congressional Hearings

This is the logic next step. Congress will call before them Roger Goddell and company to testify about the integrity of the game, the extent to which teams are cheating, and possible collusion between teams and the NFL front office.

They’ll even threaten to end the NFL’s Anti-Trust exemption. Then what? Will they really break up the NFL? Separate it back into the AFL and NFL? Destroy the Super Bowl? Crush America’s largest major sport and a billion dollar generator for the cities lucky enough to land a Super Bowl?

This will drag out for a while, wasting millions of our dollars, and distracting from real issues our government was designed to confront.

Commission to Investigate the Integrity of the National Football League

Shortly after these hearing wind down I’m pretty sure that Congress will “conclude” that it is in the “best interests of the American people” to establish a commission designed to investigate the integrity of the game. They will poke and prod and examine everything that every NFL team does on and off the field.

Maybe they will even have representatives at every team meeting and every practice just to assure ethics are being maintained. All at the cost of millions to the taxpaying public.

Bureau of Fairness in Sports

After that it’s only a matter of time before the Federal net gets cast wider to include other sports. The NBA, NHL, MLB, NASCAR, NFL, all of them will be subject to the judgment of Federal authorities charged with ensuring they maintain integrity. That they do not cheat and play the game the right way.

Additional millions and billions will be spent by the Federal government to ensure that athletes compete fairly. That they don’t cheat, that they obey the rules set out to the letter. Who knows, maybe they’ll even make those rules into laws. Punishable by fine or imprisonment by the Federal Government.

Maybe they will take over punishment from the leagues so that if you violate the rules of the game you will be punished by a public entity rather than a private organization. Maybe they will integrate the major leagues into the greater apparatus of the Federal Government so they can watch it more closely.

Conclusion

We let this happen and by the time somebody steps up to stop it the government’s intervention in major sports will be seen as “necessary.” After all, they are just trying to protect the children.

The fact that someone who say was have a right!!!!!!! to “honest football” is ridiculous. That’s not a right I’m particular concerned with losing. In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s not a “right” most people care about. Did you stop watching the Patriots after you found out they cheated? Me neither.

Instead of worrying about our “right to honest football” why doesn’t Congress worry about our right to a transparent government? Why don’t they worry about our economy and the various wars in which we’re embroiled? Why don’t they worry actually trying to do the things for which governments are established?

I don’t believe the Founders were talking about our “right honest football.” I don’t think they would be applauding Congress’ actions now. In fact, I think they may encourage us to enact our final right described above, before it’s too late.

No doubt many who read this will think I’m being ridiculous. I wonder, a year ago if someone told you a Senator would be concerning himself (as a legal matter) with cheating in the NFL you would’ve said it was ridiculous.

Well, now they are and we must begin to seriously discuss what they will do next.

I left comment on this excellent piece over on RSB. Now, due to my age LOL, I can't remember all that I wrote, ah well..... It had to do with "BigBrother" being involved in everything since FDR was elected. Modern era of this has begun with the steroids issue. Hell, George Orwell was right, he just got the year wrong! The Government is in everyones business as it is-And they are doing a wonderful job! The marks for the war and the economy are just a small indicator of their superior abilities! The dog and pony show involving steroids is a hit and will drag on ad-nausium...I just cant wait for the Feds to fix football!! Maybe they will find the "REAL KILLER" and remove that terrible jinx of Jessica on my beloved Cowboys while they enable man to fly with chicken feathers!! I simply cant wait!!!

I'll tell you exactly what Specter is thinking...He is up for re-election soon and what huge boost that will be in voters minds particularily Steelers fans...that he Arlen Specter og Pennslyvania soley got to the bottom of "Spygate" and revealed the monstrocities of the New England Patriots. I can not find any other motive Specter has than that excuse...

100% agree with this article, the government has done such a spectacular job with the country and the economy. why not f football up too. why do they think people dont want to vote. nothing but cheats and liars. the same people that make our laws r the sam ones that break them too. who want to vote for hillary ack ack ack clinton, or osama, or anyone at all they all stink and wont do anything they say. so this year in 08 im voting for bullwinkle j moose for president and eric cartman from south park for vp. treasurer maybe daffy duck or marvin the martian. i like marvin he would set the world straight with is space time modulator.

Arlen is thinking that Goodell is embedded with Kraft, that's why evidence was destroyed, ala the missing CIA tapes. But I'll go along with Specter as long as it results in either MY Steelers or the Iggles winning the next 30 or so Superbowls and they are all played in Pennsylvania! Fuzz

I think Arlen lost money on the Pat's in the Super Bowl and that pissed him off. I got my W-2 this last week and our good old gov took about 35% off the top and I am happy to see that my taxes are being spent so wisely. What a joke!!! And not a funny one.

I like this guy. He's silly. Great way to put it, but as you can see from the comment about Iran-and if you read any other spot on FoxSports where one can post- you'll not reach many of above average intelligence who will really understand what's going on (which explains how Bush got a 2nd term when we had figured out he wasn't that bright or good for America.) By my estimate, 50% of Americans are average (for you challenged folk, 50 is half of 100), meaning 25% are above average, and 25% below. 25 + 50 = 75, so 75% of your audience, or anywhere for that matter, either have below average intelligence, or average intelligence, and the bar for average has dropped quite a bit thanks to Political Correctness. (God forbid somebody's kid isn't a genius, sue the school! Those standardized tests? Too hard, make them easier! And the very government you're criticizing who are always trying to "protect the children" who you can't even properly discpline anymore without social services showing up because you have now horribly "damaged their self-esteem" is largely to blame for making that stuff possible.) So while I appreciate this message, it will no doubt draw more moronic comments over time than anything that makes sense or grasps what you're really trying to say. I wouldn't be surprised at all if someone even tried to twist it into a race war lol. That's what usually happens around here @ FoxSports.

I think it is great, the NFL never investigated this thing like they should have. The NFL also destroyed the tapes and only slapped the Pats on the wrist.

The NFL plays in publically subsidized stadiums and have an exemption like no other business in the US. I pay good money for season tickets and the NFL package and I want to make sure games are on the up and up.

The Pats are becomimg bigger and bigger jokes by the day. The funny thing is I do not think this thing has even started. Good for Congress, I am going to call and give my support. Only people that do not want this thing to move forward is the NFL the Pats and their Fans.

This Spygate thing is so out of hand that it's just not worth it anymore.

The NFL should regulate itself. Whether or not Goodell should've destroyed the tapes is something that is moot now. Policies should be established for the future; defensive audio is a good start.

I do not pay taxes so some senator can find out if they were cheated out of a Super Bowl. The government, even though it is public airwaves, should stay out of this. They should take a lesson of the disaster its been with the MLB.

Pats were fined, lost a pick and belichick was fined. Their name forever tainted.

What specter wants to do is not only a waste of time, but it runs the risk of ruining "america's game"

Good Article. I hate seeing those higher than mighty good for nuttins in Washington get involved with this. I am hating them making a mockery of the steriods issue as well. Every sport needs to police itself.

What motivation does the NFL have in investiagting this any further coming off a year that was probably their best ever in relations to TV coverage, fan base etc... Well they have None!! No Motivation in doing anything else and just dropping it. THAT'S the problem but the answer isn't to have congress falling over backwards using OUR tax money for their grandstanding. I don't know what the answer is but it should start with the fans. Maybe a Commission needs to be established to overlook all professional sports in the country similar to the Olympic Committee, but one that answers to the fans and not the owners or the commissioners, but with the power to punish teams or players when caught cheating. Who the heck knows but I am certain, our government isnt going to fix anything. They haven't been able to fix anything since the Cuban Missle Crisis.

He actually destroyed evidence so that he could hide a much bigger problem. Why else would someone move so quickly to do such a thing? If NOTHING was there, then why not just keep the evidence intact so that it could be proven that there was nothing there.

Go get 'em, Senator Specter...show that washed-up has-been, George Snitchell, how a REAL LEGITIMATE investigation is done, not some biased sham conducted by someone who is a DIRECTOR of one of the MLB teams, a team that oh-so-conveniently had NONE of it's main stars listed in the Snitchell Report. Specter's "connection" to Comcast PALES by comparison.

...simply stick a "1" in NE's loss column for their week 1 game against the jets, and let it go.

The one thing you are all missing is that the guy that worked for belicheat says he has some incrimanating stuff that could embarrass the NFL and the Pat's. Only reason he has not come out is because the Pat's will file suit. Specter say's he'll find a way to grant immunity to him and has already visited his lawyer on 3 seperate occasions. Also Goodell giving the ok to destroy the tapeds befor he seen them is sort of fishy. I'm interested to see what comes about in all this.

this guy as a DA argued for the lowering of bail of the notorious einhorn murderer by 75%... the sleeze then went to europe, france where else, and wasnt brought to justice for 20 years....but the outrageous nature of the murderer and his demeanor and disregard for any type decency made the whole episode vulgar and reflected on specter himself as a man with questionable judgement and fair mindedness ,, the magic bullet theory has been discussed but if he, the co-author of that theory can see demons in what Goodell is doing.. it makes you wonder about the JFK thing .... but whatever....we could talk about his connections in comcast etc .... but to sum it up, specter just looks flat out vile and petty... did he have money on the super bowls what is his malfunction on this? .... most likely just a squeeze play at the taxpayers expense... but this guy seems drunk with power.. someone should put him in his place....these friggin politicians dont care about me and you .... but does he have to flaunt it.... he says citizens need to know all about this....yea they do ...they need to know Specter is on the take from comcast...I for one will go to Penn and campaign against this blowhard in 2 years if the person he is running against is even close to a viable candidate....owners and coaches of both Pitt and Philly say they have no problem with the spygate thing.....this piece of #### is destroying peoples lives and fans entertainment in the name of putting money in his pocket

*as the video starts and the smoke clears from the halftime entertainment dress rehearsal, the Rams players can be seen running through their plays along with super close-ups of the coaches discussing the formations and the signals they'll be using. When the Rams practice video ends, the video gets a bit scratchy then starts up again and starts showing an earlier Patriot practice... The camera pans to the left and on the sideline you can see Tom Brady getting HGH shots from Rodney Harrison, while Randy Moss is rolling what looks like green cigarettes from a plastic baggie while Junior Seau and Richard Seymour practice karate chops and eye-gouging in the background then the video gets fuzzy and goes black and a new segment starts showing a night time backyard pool party showing Belichick in the Jacuzzi with Brady, Teddy Bruschi and an unknown trainer putting lotion on each others backs as giggling starts and the lights go low and the video ends... *click*

Couldn't agree more, Congress is wasting our time & money on such trivial matters. But this isn't news. Remember, this is the same institution that investigated TV game shows a few decades ago. But it runs much deeper than that. By your extra comments(no clear defined objective, sluggish economy, ect.) I can only judge that you are from the left side of the aisle. You want to know why this kind of stuff gets brought before Congress? Look inward, my friend. Tobacco companies lying or making to much money? Investigate and sue, the left applauds. Big oil making too much money? Investigate and sue, the left applauds. Education seems to be dropping amongst our little ones, investigate and sue the people by raising taxes. You see, it is the answer to every problem for government. Investigate and sue/raise taxes. And they are applauded every step of the way by those of you on the left. This is nothing new. It has been going on since FDR. Every problem requires a new government program, taxes raised, and so on and so on. Stop writing articles about how awful this is, which it is, and do something really useful. STOP VOTING FOR LIBERALS!

I am all for any investigation on the Cheating Pats!! What are we showing our kids? It's ok to cheat? If we get caught all we'll loose is a 1st round..which we already prepared ourselves on that just in case we were caught we have a backup 1st round!! If we get caught all we'll get is a big FINE $500,000 and don't worry bout it the owners have our backs on that one, they'll pay the fine and just add that $500,000 on my new contract.
The Pats had it all figured out and beleive me Bill is not stupid, he knew sooner or later he would #### someone off and they would put the finger on his cheating a**! They all knew and I don't care what anyone says that stealing signals does not impact the game! Bulls***!! How in the hell can players that are in their late 30's be that good? For one knowing where the play is going sure does make a 38 year old player look like he has not lost a step!
I am all for doing the RIGHT thing! I think they should be stripped of all their titles and FIRE Bill! That would send the RIGHT message to our kids out there and let them know if they are caught cheating on anything they will have to pay the price, NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE!!

The SuperBowl told us everything! Pats got popped! They couldn't tape anymore practices, they lost their edge/advantage. HAHAHA!! I loved every bit of it!! I hope the Senator dork from PA investigates all the NFL teams, so he can see that cheating is widespread by all teams.I live in Texas and you can't tell me teams don't try to get an edge over their opponent.I can't figure out what kind of edge the Patriots got in the 1st game against the Jets when the 7 minutes of taping(that they never got to see)was confiscated.Didn't the Jets video man get kicked out of New Englands stadium in 2006 for illegally taping or do some fans have selective memory.I think some of the fans who are upset with the Patriots having such a great year are mad because their teams did not have the TALENT the Patriots had this year. Boo Hoo.

I agree the Pats had an all pro team! Just like the Yankees do every year! But then Pats 1st game against the JETs...they did not need any tape against them! C'mon who is on the PATs division...that division was very weak this year...Pats can dominate that div. each year...why would they even want to cheat? GREED!
I'm not angry! My team did good this year and they look like they can have the same next year...BUT if they get popped for cheating then I agree 100% they should pay the price! The issue here is that the PATS have been popped and they should and will pay the price one way or the other and it looks like the off season will bring nothing but what they deserve!

Watch Sports each day and you'll see what I mean! Just saw on espn that Bill Bilicheat apologized to all fans for all the controversy he has brought to the team! Ahhh is the big bad dynasty falling apart?

I couldn't agree more. I wish we could get rid of every single lying and thieving member of our Federal and State Governments and start over. They don't listen to what we want and are all corrupt. I am so sick of voting for the less of two evils. would be nice to have a candidate that I would want to vote for
