Check this post out in HD and vote in my new poll: who will win the Super Bowl?

Introduction

Well, the final week of the NFL regular season is over. Twenty teams are done for the year, twelve are starting anew. The New England Patriots have become the first undefeated team heading into the playoffs since the 1972 Miami Dolphins and are looking to replicate that team’s historic success.

I don’t know for a fact, but I’m willing to bet it’s fairly rare for a division to send three teams to the playoffs. I bet it’s even more rare for two divisions to each send three teams to the playoffs. But this year 50% of the playoff teams hail from the NFC East and AFC South.

The biggest question of this playoff season is who do we think can beat the Patriots? As they try to make history and go down as the greatest team ever to play we must ask ourselves if they can be stopped.

But for now, the Patriots aren’t playing and have two weeks to wait and see whom they will face. For now, I’ll give you my thoughts on the first NFL games of 2008 and how I think they will shake out.

Jacksonville Jaguars (11-5) at Pittsburgh Steelers (10-6)

Earlier in the season it looked like the Pittsburgh Steelers were one of the top two or three teams in the NFL. Now, it looks like they may not even be top five. They’re still good but there are a lot of questions around them.

The Jaguars, meanwhile, look like beasts. They’ve been playing well on both sides of the ball and David Garrard has been a real find. The best part of the team, of course, is its running back tandem of Fred Taylor (1,202 yards rushing) and Maurice Jones-Drew (768 yards rushing).

I think this game won’t quite be a repeat of a few weeks ago but will have the same result. The Steelers will step up their game and be more like the smash-mouth Steelers of old. In the end, however, I think the combo of Jone-Drew and Taylor will just be took much and the Jaguars will win in a close one.

Tennessee Titans (10-6) at San Diego Chargers (11-5)

It was really nice to see the Titans get in to the playoffs. I’ve always liked Vince Young so it will be good to see him in the real NFL. However, I am concerned about just how hurt he is. If he is forced to sit in the pocket or even hesitate when he has an opening cause of injury concern then the Titans will be crushed.

If he comes back near 100% then they have a glimmer of hope but just a glimmer. LaDainian Tomlinson for all his complaining came alive as the year went on. He’s captured another rushing title and forces other teams to game plan around him. That will open things up for Gates and Chambers and allow the Chargers to move the ball through the air.

While the Titans have shown a lot of heart their season will come to a screeching halt in San Diego. I fully expect the Titans to get crushed but this is still a step in the right direction. Next year, they will be a dangerous team.

Washington Redskins (9-7) at Seattle Seahawks (10-6)

This seems eerily like a few years ago. Back then the Redskins had to win something like their last 5 games to make the playoffs and they did. Then they went to Seattle and lost to the eventual NFC Champs.

I think things will be different this year, though I must confess I haven’t watched Seattle this year. The Redskins are playing with two things that are paramount in sports: confidence and heart. Those two things can combine to make even the least talented teams deadly.

The Seahawks have been returning to form late in the season and still have home field advantage. However, I think the window may have closed on the Seahawks hopes and this may be their final home game of the playoffs for a while.

I think the ‘Skins will come out energized and if they can score early will win the game. If it becomes a grind it out game, however, Seattle will prevail. I think Portis will have a good day and Collins will continue to manage the game and lead the Redskins to victory.

New York Giants (10-6) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7)

The Giants played a good game against the New England Patriots and no one can fault them for losing. However, I’ve never trusted Eli and I continue to not trust Eli. I don’t think the kid has what it takes and I expect him to fold after his first mistake.

He likes the inherent ability to bounce back from something he does wrong and he lets it kill him for the rest of the game. I expect the Bucs will attack him early and often and I anticipate an early INT to seal the deal.

After that, Eli will stumble around and show the occasional flash before failing to convert critical downs. In the end I think Eli will get a last chance to drive his team down the field for victory… but that will end when Ronde Barber intercepts him and returns it for a TD (his twin brother cheering him on the sidelines).

Quick Recap

Jagsover Steelers

Chargers over Titans

Redskins over Seahawks

Bucs over Giants

That’s a fifty-fifty split between home and away teams (or upper and lower seeds). If these games play out this way then in the AFC we’ll have the Jaguars at New England and the Chargers at Indianapolis. In the NFC we’ll have the Redskins at Dallas and the Bucs at Green Bay.

Patriot Games

There are only two teams I feel are capable of beating the New England Patriots. The Indianapolis Colts and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Colts are obvious but the Jags may surprise people.

The Jaguars are a tough, physical team. They play angry and have one of the best running games in the league. The Pats’ weakness is against the run and passes up the middle. With Garrard’s accuracy and the running of Taylor/Jones-Drew they could be the upset team of the season.

Brian Billick Bye-Bye

It’s about time. Brian Billick is one of the most over rated coaches of this century and I’m glad he got canned. The players didn’t respect him because he didn’t deserve respect and I’ll be interested to see if he ever wins anything significant in the NFL again. He’ll crop up somewhere as head coach (Atlanta?) but I sincerely hope it’s not for your team.

Isn’t Tuna with Dolphin illegal?

So Bill Parcells has fired the GM and is preparing to bring in Jeff Ireland from Dallas. Parcells likes his guys and Ireland is certainly one of his guys. And for as much as people dislike Jerry Jones the guy refuses to hold back his guys so Ireland will probably be gone to Miami.

There’s still the question of head coach to deal with. I’m not convinced Cam Cameron won’t be given another shot. Now, whether or not he should is certainly debatable but I think there’s generally a two season minimum for new head coaches (expect in Oakland).

There are a few names to toss out there. The most obvious is Bill Cowher but I seriously doubt the Tuna will bring him in. The two will simply clash way too much. Brian Billick is another option but I’m betting the Tuna stays away from him.

Tony Sparano from the Cowboys is a sleeper option and is another one of Bill’s trusted guys. Steve Mariucci is another name I’d like to throw out there as a candidate.

Who ever he brings in, Bill will want to run the 3-4 which means Jason Taylor will either be converted to line backer or retire to his acting career.

It will certainly be interesting to see what Bill Parcells does with this team and if he can really resist stepping onto the sidelines himself.

Conclusion

That’s it for now. Let me know what you think of my picks and I hope you all have a happy new year!

Don't forget to vote in my new poll!

We have the same picks except for the Bucs.

Miami wins at least 6 games next year with the changes that Tuna does make. I have my problems with how Jerry Jones treated Tom Landry, but he has never been one to keep his coaching personnel from seeking a better job.

How about clicking the link to my blog and giving me your Playoff and Superbowl picks.

I agree with your picks and dashman68 i dont think you watch the bucs enough to say that you think Eli Manning can do well against the best pass defense in the NFC and the second ranked overall defense in the NFL. As you can probably gues i'm a Bucs fan but just cause the Giants did well against the Pats doesnt mean anything, the playoffs are a whole new beast and Eli has proved over and over again he cant win in the playoffs...did i mention that Jeff Garcia has beaten the Giants both times he has met them in th playoffs. Bottom line if the Giants dont get 5 or 6 sacks and a couple int's(Garcia doesn't throw many of those) this one is gonna be over early just wait and see.

Chargers over Titans
Giants over Bucs
Seabags over Skins
Pack vs. NE in the bowl
Billick is one of those guys that's just best suited to be an offensive coordinator and not a head coach. Norv Turner and Ray Rhodes are others that should strictly be coordinators.

I agree with all your picks except the Giants/Bucs. Did you forget that the Giants also have a defense??? Eli is not going to have the chance to make too many mistakes early. The Bucs will have to stop the run before Eli starts chucking it up. Should be a good game, Giants by 7.

Dashman: Miami will certainly improve but I think it will depend on quarterback play as to how much.

I'll head over to your blog in a bit.

Noluv: There's plenty of love here. I think people are under rating the Bucs cause they haven't seen them play (I may be doing the same thing to Seattle but I digress). The Bucs defense is scary again and Jeff Garcia knows how to handle himself.

Meader: Brian Billick should be an offensive coordinator but some owner will pay for the name recognition. I don't know his name, but if New England's offensive coordinator is hired as a HC I wouldn't be surprised to see Billick on New England's sideline next season (as OC). After he and Bill Belichick are BFF's.

Chocolate: No I didn't forget the Giants have a defense, but I remembered the Bucs have Jeff Garcia. Garcia can navigate the waters against a good defense, Eli can't. Eli will make his first mistake and then never let it go and get worse from there.

In the end its Garcia vs Manning, and I'll take Garcia every time.

Anyone who thinks that Brian Billick should be an offensive coordinator anywhere but a pop warner league is smoking some really good dope. Why do you think he got canned yesterday? He can't generate any offense, that's why ! As for your picks, I agree with all of them. As a betting man I especially like the skins with 4 points over the seahawks.

The 2 games I dont agree on with you are the 2 NFC games. First off Seattle is at home. A home loss in the playoffs is a rare occasion for Seattle. They have not lost a home playoff game in their last 4 games and have won 24 of their last 28 games at home.. (dont quote me on the numbers, its what what i read on another site) Seattle is also a better team on paper. Washington has a Quarterback who hasnt had much starting experience and I think in a big playoff game, thats going to hurt him. He is also due for a bad game.

As for the Giants Bucs Game. I feel it will come down to how Eli plays. If he doesnt turn over the ball, the Giants will win... and i feel that he will play a smart game

You list Parcell's possible choices for head coach and you include Billick, (impossible!) but you don't even mention the one guy out there who would kick butt as part of the new Parcells/Ireland/Dolphins team!! From what I recall, Marty Schottenheimer is still alive, . Wasn't he a fairly good coach? After putting up with that #### owner of the Chargers, Marty certainly could work with Parcells.

Whoever wrote this article apparently has not watched a lot of Patriot games. The Jaguars are a good team but do not have the defense to stop Brady & Co. They don't have enought quality people on defense to stop the Pats. They can use their running game to eat the clock and then Brady within 4 or 5 passes scores a touchdown. The Pats will eventually stop their running game and make the Jags QB beat them and he just isn't talented enough. Maybe a year or two from now he might but not 2008. The Pats are a team of destiny and they will win the Super Bowl because no team in the NFL can match them on defense.

Billick will be an OC at best & I doubt it will be for Miami...I know it won't be for New England. (They won't even need another - Josh is wisely staying put for at least another year...or 5)

Marty wouldn't work out in Maiami - he & Parcells will both want more control the either will be willing to relinquish.

Although Cower could be a good "fit" for the Phins, I don't think he's ready to go back to coaching yet...maybe after 1 more year off???

As for your pics - you are 4 - 0...the only questionable one is the Giants losing, but I think Eli will fall apart - he's lucky his only pick last week came late in the game or his confidence would've dragged him down like a rock in water. He can't get it done wjen it counts & it all matters this week...last week it didn't

My picks for the wildcards.........Washington in a very close game, Tampa Bay ( great defense ), San Diego, hitting their stride at the right time this year, and Jacksonville over the Steelers.
Next round: New England Over Jax, Indy over San Diego, Dallas over the Skins and Tampa Bay to upset the Packers at Lambeau
Conference Finals: Dallas over the Bucs and Indy, as much as I hate them to defeat New England. The Patriots defense is faltering now and will not be able to handle Peyton and Co. Hope I'm wrong cause I love Moss with Brady throwing to him.
Superbowl prediction: Dallas Cowboys defeat the Colts 34-31

I wouldnt count the bolts out just yet. We all remember the ugly game last year with the Pats. Phillip Rivers seemed to mature well as the season went on but he obviously has holes in his game. Yhe chargers can win if the defence steps up and that means a healthy Jamal Williams forget all those stat guys on defence its Williams that makes it all happen. If jamal Williams is hungry for a win he will dent the opposing teams O-line allowing other players to make the plays. If Rivers can play thru his mistakes and not let them bother him I think the Bolts will be a tough team to beat. The Pats by all means are the team to beat and any team doing so the game will be an upset. So Pat fans I'm not trashing your team but I think the key to beating the pats is playing thru mitakes and not letting them get your team down. Dont go for the home run just first downs to try and keep Brady off the field long enough for the defence to re-energize. The Pats are great but not unbeatable.

Stu: Well, plenty of good coordinators have failed as Head Coaches and then succeeded again as Coordinators. I think someone will give him another shot.

Crisco: The only reason I picked against the 'Hawks is because the Redskins are playing with so much heart right now. If they can score early they will win. If, however, this becomes a grind it out game the Seahawks will carry the day.

Eli Manning going to Tampa Bay to play the number one pass defense does not spell success. I expect him to faulter early and never recover. The Giants defense might be able to hold the score down but unless they score some points the Bucs win the game.

Laq: I put a disclaimer in with Billick's name. I don't think the egos will work out; that's the same reason why I don't think Schottenheimer will work either. I think Bill will need a low ego guy or at least a guy who will keep his head down (again why he may keep Cam Cameron).

rusirious13

Ed: There seems to be a lot of "whoops's" doesn't there?

Don't know about Iraq. If by getting better you mean less violent then I guess that's right. But I'm not sure the people who are in control now are truly on "our" side.

Dwayne: Try just about every Sunday. I live in New England so I have little choice. Maybe you didn't watch the Eagles or Ravens games? They shared the same formula that almost (should have) beaten the Patriots.

Run, run, run, short pass over the middle, run, run, run...

And on paper is meaningless. The Jaguars are a defensive team; they are big and tough. It will not be a pitch-and-catch if the Pats face them. I believe they're one of two teams that could beat the Patriots.

Oh, and David Garrard has thrown exactly 3 INT's all year. Don't say he doesn't have the talent. If they can run the ball well (like Baltimore did, 138 rushing yards) and their defense can get to Tom Brady then they can win the game.

rusirious13

Crookedcop: Yeah, I don't think either he or Garret (the two offensive wunderkids) will be leaving after this season. But if he did Belichick would secure a spot for his good buddy.

Don't know about Cowher. I think he might be looking for more control then Bill will let him have. However, maybe Parcells would be more willing to work with someone of Cowher's caliber?

I think we'll get one of "Bill's" guys filling that spot.

NC: Wow, Bucs over the Pack in Green Bay, gutsy call. Prepare for the insults (not from me though). If the Packers can run effectively I think they'll win in a route. However, if they are forced to throw then that "great defense" may win it for the Bucs.

Also Indy over NE; you're just looking for hate mail aren't you?

Mean: I wouldn't either but I think Indy's a superior team on both sides of the ball. And if it turns into Manning vs Rivers, then Peyton's gonna win that battle.

When a team is going for "greatest ever" any pick against them is seen as disrespect.

Bolt: Yeah, that's a hairy one cause I've seen a lot more of Washington. But the 'Hawks running game isn't what it used to be and the Redskins are getting hot at exactly the right time. Of course, they did that in '05 too and their season ended on Qwest Field.

I diagree with 2:

Washington over Seattle: the 'Skins are on a roll and if they get the early lead, they'll run Portis and chew up the clock. Hasselback is a good quarterback, but the skins have a good secondary and the Seattle running game hasn't been the same since Alexander broke his foot.

Skins 24
Seahawks - 20

Game 2:

New York's defense has kept them in games ever since week 3. New York has to stick with the running game and throw only when nessesary. A healthy Plexico Burris will help Eli.

Garcia has been the bane of the Giant's existence. this one will come down to last possesion.

New York - 28
Tampa - 24

Billick is a DOOFUS! The ONLY reason that he even GOT the chance to coach the Ravens was that the 1998 Minnesota offense was on auto-pilot...ANYONE could have coached them that year and scored points! Then he walks into a PERFECT situation in Baltimore...the DEFENSE was what won that Super Bowl for him. Come to think of it, the Pats OC job WOULD be perfect for him...heck, Moss saved his sorry butt in 1998...and probably would do it again in 2008.

I think the Jags will beat the Steelers pretty good without Parker. It sounds kind of weird (considering we are talking about Pittsburgh) but Jacksonville is just a more physical team and actually better suited for the cold weather than the Steelers. As far as the Seahawks go and their lack of running game, I think it's been better ever since Holmgren decided to spread the D out, let Hasselbeck throw the ball and then use Morris as a "scat back." As a Packer fan, Seattle is the one team I didn't want to see in the 2nd round. Personally, I think the winner of the Seattle/Green Bay game will represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

As for the Giants, if they had any decent QB other than the lesser Manning I'd probably pick them. But they have Eli and I just don't believe in him.

PF: You may well be right. Pretty much everything I know about the Seahawks this year is from the stats I look up and the stuff I read. However, I saw the intensity with which the 'Skins played and that will be hard to beat.

IceMan: Hear, Hear!

Bahston: You might be right. I never understood why people called him an offensive genius; maybe if he gets another shot as a coordinator we'll find out.

75Jimbo: There are plenty of blogging sites you can sign up for, including the one you're commenting on. I also figured it would look bad if I didn't pick the Redskins-Seahawks game (Washington fans would say it's cause I like Dallas, Seattle fans would say it's cause I have an "East-Coast Bias" ... it would've been messy).

Jaxson: Don't know if they'll win by 10 but I think they'll win in the end. I don't know if they're neccessarily the better team but they're playing like they are and that's all that matters.

Meader: Wow, Seattle vs Green Bay. Yet another Holmgren bowl and back in Green Bay. So, if those two play who will be the winner and who do you see them facing in the Super Bowl?

As for Cowher, maybe, but he might also be ready to jump back in now. If that's the case, then Miami wouldn't be a bad choice (assuming his ego can fit in with Parcells').

Boston: So who do you have going to the Big Game?

As of right now, I like the Pack vs. the Pats. Of course I reserve the right to change my mind later. It seems like the Colts are just laying in the weeds and when healthy they have enough to outscore the Pats. Could be a great game assuming both get there. I like Green Bay to win the rematch with Dallas assuming both of those teams get there. I know, I know Favre has never won in Dallas. People tend to forget that the current Green Bay Packers are 0-1 in Dallas. Favre is the only holdover from the mid 90's playoff teams and quite frankly Dallas was just the better team back then. People also tend to focus on Green Bay's lack of running game. It's really a tale of 2 seasons. From week 8 (when Grant got his first start) until week 15, Ryan Grant was the NFL's leading rusher. If not for the stinger in the Lions game he would have rushed for 1000+ yards in 9 starts. As it is he finished with 956 yards, which isn't bad for a guy that wasn't even on the team for the 1st game.

Good analysis. I think the Jags will be even more in control of their matchup with the Steelers and win by 10. Chargers impressed me last week and I think their running gain will push then by the Titans by at least 7. Gibbs is a great coach, but the Redskins seem to be inconsistant and aren't there yet so the Seahawks will slip by them by 3. Finally, the Giants will be revved up by their performance against the Patriots and will beat the Bucs by 14.

You clowns keep drinking that Jaguar koolaid. The Steelers have had their division wrapped up since the second defeat of the (Br)Clowns, so there really hasn't been anything for them to play for since. If you don't think Richard (they won't let me use ####) LeBeau will have some surprises in store Saturday night, you've got another think coming. It is a shame that Willie Parker is done for the season because he deserved that rushing title. But, if you've seen how the Patriots offense has been doing things all year, be prepared to see the Steelers do something similar.

Keep drinking that koolaid, but don't bet your life savings on the Jags.

This guy rick is an i.diot Do you realize all seven of their road wins have been against below .500 teams with exception to the Eagles(8-8) and the Skins(9-7) so you can calm down with that 7-1 c.rap on the road.I'm sure Eli Manning whose thrown 20 INTs is gonna light up the best pass defense in the NFC and the #2 overall defense in the NFL...Have you even seen the Bucs play...let me guess your going with the concept that their struggling they have been playing with 2nd string players the past two weeks. Did you forget that Garcia has one of the top 5 QB ratings in the NFL and that Galloway averages 17 yards a catch and just recorded his 3rd straight thousand yard season.Yeah rick the Eli Manning lead Giants are just gonna rip the Bucs defense...

rick: The Bucs are better than the Giants on both sides of the ball and especially at QB. Garcia has been doing just fine at 37 and I think he'll scramble just enough to win the game.

Meader: I ultimately am taking the Packers over my Cowboys because of Grant and my own cynicism. Do you think the Packers are capable of beating the Pats though?

Caseys: Thank you. I totally disagree about the Giants but that's why they play the game.

Seachickens: Eloquent and insightful.

Mendelsson: Yeah, but it's fun to make picks and stats help bolster emotions so. But in the end it's all in the gut, hence why I picked 'Skins over 'Hawks.

The only pick I question is Hawks vs Skins. At times this season, Seattle has looked dominating and other times they look like a high school team. I think it depends on which team shows up. Skins can beat the Hawks if they shoot themselfs in the foot. Otherwise, with almost the entire Hawks team healthy, if they play decently they will handle the Skins in a close game.

Consider this scenario:
Wild Card:
1. Motivated Redskins over the Hawks in memory of their fallen soldier (Sean Taylor)
2. Under rated Jags win easily in Pittsburg
3. Bucs over the Giants in a close one
4. Chargers shred the Titans in a blow out
Divisional:
1. Underestimated Chargers defeat the Colts
2. Under rated Jags stop the Patriots
3. Cowboys beat the Skins
4. Bucs lose to the Packers
Championship:
1. Jags at SD
2. Packers at Dallas
Superbowl:
Chargers vs. Cowboys

Another Possibility:
Wildcard:
1. Motivated Skins beat the Hawks
2. Bucs over the Giants in a close one
3. Jags win easily in Pittsburg
4. Chargers shred the Titans
Divisional:
1. Cowboys over the Redskings in a close one
2. Bucs lose to the Packers in a blow out
3. Jags stop the Patriots
4. Underestimated Chargers upset the Colts
Championship:
1. Cowboys over the Packers
2. Chargers over the Jags
Superbowl:
Cowboys vs. Chargers

rusirious... In my heart yes, in my mind, I'm not so sure. What I know is that Green Bay has been doubted all year long and has proven most critics wrong time and time again. I think Green Bay has the ability to spread New England out with 4 and 5 wide and move the ball, keep Brady off the field and ultimately score touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, I believe Green Bay can match up favorably. My gameplan would simply be to have Harris shadow Moss, Woodson shadow Welker and take your chances with Stallworth and Gaffney. Make those 2 have to beat you. IF they can generate pressure with the front 4 and have a blitz package like Philly's from time to time, they can win the game. Ultimately, if the Pats make it to the Super Bowl, I don't see them losing. Belichek is one of the best game planners of all time AND he gets 2 weeks to prepare for the Super Bowl. That combination will be tough for anyone to overcome.

I Don't believe for one minute that the Jags or Chargers are under estimated. If they want to use that to fuel their own fire so be it. The Chargers are one of the most talented teams in the NFL from top to bottom. The addition of Chambers was something they have needed for a few years now. Norv Turner is about the only thing they have going against them. IF the Chargers played their best game they can beat anyone. That includes at Indy and at New England. They should handle Tennessee handily and quite frankly have a team that matches up with Indy very well. The Jags don;t get as much credit as they probably should simply because they play in Indy's division and haven't been able to overcome them yet. They are physical enough to beat anyone they play. I believe New England will get to the bowl, but I also believ that there are 4 teams (jags, colts, pats and chargers) that are capable of coming out of the AFC. Go easy Pittsburgh fans, Parker is a huge loss for the playoffs.

ruserious maybe the only sane one in here!! I agree with whatyour saying about the Bucs the only game they had nationally televised got flexed out of sunday night. I beleive that people are taking this losing 3 out of 4 is out of control, Garcia was injured for one of those games and sat out the other two the Bucs are a completely diff. team when he is in the game and i dont think people have seen him at his best with the Bucs this year. As you can probably tell i'm a Bucs fan but dont get me wrong the Bucs are no offensive juggernaut. I think evrybody watching will see the Bucs defense they remember and see the Eli we all know. Bucs 31-10

I am a FOX sports blogger because I like to talk and have opinions about pretty much anything and everything. I like pretty much any sport but I love football (basketball's
a close second). The NFL is the only major sport I watch all season but I watch the others sporadically.
My favorite teams are the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Bulls, Detroit Red Wings, Atlanta Braves, and Boston Red Sox.
