Rugged Picks: Week Three Looking Just As Crazy
Sep 16, 2008 | 5:31PM | report this
First off, I would like to address the Monday Night "thriller" between the Cowboys and Eagles. Whoever buys into the idea that the shootout between these two teams was a showcase of talent is out of his mind. Alex Marvez calls Tony Romo's play heroic, and I'm thinking that he watched a different game. Tony Romo cost his team big on that endzone fumble, and when he had a chance to put the game away, he went three and out. Donovan McNabb simply wanted the game less, fumbling it twice on handoffs and running around like an #### and not making a play when afforded all of the time in the world. On third and long, a veteran quarterback should know that checking it down is a must. To take a sack there was absolutely horrendous.

Where was that mighty pro-bowl supplemented defense of the Dallas Cowboys last night? The Eagles moved the ball effortlessly. Just the same, while the Eagles did a great job stuffing the run, their secondary got beat on the deep ball too many times. The difference in the game was the awful special teams play of the Eagles, as Felix Jones picked them apart to provide beautiful field position time and time again. Overall, a pretty sloppy game, and these two teams better pick up their play or they will lose this week to two very hot teams in Green Bay and Pittsburgh.

KC 10 @ ATL 21: Atlanta will work off a Michael Turner to beat a weak Kansas City team and jump to a misleading 2-1 start.

OAK 7@ BUF 24: Buffalo is looking more and more like the team to beat in the AFC East. The Patriots/Jets game indicated that the Jets just aren't a playoff caliber team. Buffalo is looking like the only real threat out of a sorry division, but that is not to take any credit away from them. Buffalo is 2-0 against '07 playoff squads, a mere two weeks into the season.

CAR 27 @ MIN 17: Carolina has gotten back to their playoff-caliber form, but let's not write off the Vikings just yet. EDIT: Let's in fact write off the Vikings. Gus under center is worse than Jackson under center, and even if he plays well this week (which I wouldn't bank on), he'll fall apart sooner than later. This is a must win for the Vikings, and the coaching staff has decided that they must lose.

ARI 24 @ WAS 28: This Washington picked up some confidence last week, and while Kurt Warner has looked brilliant, his near-perfect game did come against the Miami Dolphins. The 'Skins take this one.

TB 14 @ CHI 20: The Bears showed last week that their win against the Colts was no fluke. Their defense is looking like more than Tampa can handle at the moment. Da Bears.

HOU 14 @ TEN 24: Tennessee will move to 3-0 with Collins under center. Collins can win games, and he looked pretty damn impressive in week two.

MIA 14 @ NE 17: If Miami can finally get their ground game going, it will be a close game. I expect them too, but Matt Cassel will still be a headline next week, with a miraculous 2-0 record as a starting quarterback.

CIN 10 @ NYG 31: The defending Super Bowl champions continue to sharpen their game against inferior opponents, such as the hapless Bengals.

NO 20 @ DEN 28: Denver is the more complete team. Sure, they may have been put into position to win by a bogus call, but they still had to take advantage and execute. I like the call by Shanahan. It was a gutsy move to go for the conversion, and that will pay dividends for him and his team's confidence.

STL 17 @ SEA 28: I cannot decide who is a bigger disappointment between the Rams and the 'Hawks, even though Seattle has the upper hand in this one. The Rams just look embarrassed, and Scott Linehan looks like a joke out there on the sideline. The Seahawks are looking like this year's first legitimate pretender, and the NFC West is no longer soft enough for them to slip into the playoffs.

DET 17 @ SF 24: Detroit is looking a lot like Detroit, and San Fransisco will come out on top in this one. No need for a lengthy explanation regarding why the Detroit Lions are just awful year after year. Though to me, it's more entertaining to have a team like the Lions to depend on to be a sub .500 squad every year. It gives you something to talk about during the week. "Hey Al, what happened to your team on Sunday? Lost to the Detroit Lions, and you said they were going places. Chuckle, chuckle."

JAC 13 @ IND 17: Indy is simply looking like they may have gotten it together, and Jacksonville, while still a good football team, looks like they haven't. Indy keeps within a game of the Titans at week three's conclusion.

CLE 21 @ BAL 20: Cleveland's been a disappointment this year, and injuries are only hurting an already shoddy defense, but they have enough firepower to beat out the Ravens, at the very least.

PIT 27 @ PHI 28: This is going to be a hell o####ame. I'm going back and forth on this one as I write this, but I'm going to have to give it to Philly in Philly.

DAL 20 @ GB 31:
I'm doing the unthinkable. That is, I'm putting the Cowboys down two scores to the Aaron Rodgers led Green Bay Packers. Who was it that gave the Pack a fighting chance with brilliant play when Brett "The Media's Beloved Jet" Favre was playing pretty damn poorly in the regular season against the Cowboys? Aaron Rodgers. The young quarterback is the real deal, and he faces an overrated defense on Sunday. Wade Phillips is a disgusting excuse for a head coach there in Dallas, judging by his reported comments at halftime and his refusal to acknowledge that the Eagles' offense moved the ball well against his defense ("well" is an understatement).

The NFC East loses it's first game to a non-division opponent, finishing week 3 at 9-3 collectively, and 7-1 against non-division opponents.

NYJ 14 @ SD 35: The San Diego Chargers are coming out fired up and will take out plenty of that aggression on an overrated Jets team. I'm kicking myself for picking the Jets last week, as my initial thoughts this season seemed to be a bit more accurate: the Jets and their savior are overrated. San Diego, after giving the fans a gut-wrenching first two weeks against teams that should not have taken them down to the wire let along beat them, finally gives them reason to cheer.

As I read your first bitter lines, I guessed you were a 'Skins fan. Close, I was.

The game was great and showed how these offenses are wicked. How often do we get a premier division shootout instead of a 10-6 game like the AFC East gave us on Sunday night?

this was to easy of a week to pick games. all the home teams have an excellent chance to win. just take all the home games and you should do well. WAIT, that is what you did!
ok, then the Steelers win, the Cardinals win, and the lions win. there are your upsets for the week.

net, we were in a coma from the Sunday night game.
If it's your team and you won, of course it was great. It was terrible to watch in comparison to MNF for the non-fan. That was my comparison.

You are the one who is out of his mind if you think that the Green Bay "D" is going to hold Dallas to 20 points. What is so different about thier defense this year than their defense last year when Dallas hung 37 on 'em?

Do you actually watch Football or do you just get on here to make an #### out of yourself?

slshusker- The offensive play was good, and I was particularly impressed by the Eagles. Still, you cannot fumble twice on handoffs in a big divisional game. On the Dallas side, they couldn't get the running game going.

C'mon, you cannot say anything other than the defense of both teams looked pretty poor last night. For two teams that I have been considering premiere teams in the league, I did expect a much cleaner game. The special teams play of the Eagles has to improve.

D CWBYS- Dallas in Green Bay, and Green Bay has a solid, young defense. I think that they will be able to protect against the deep ball better than Philly did, and with the way Barber looked on Monday Night, 20 points is not unreasonable. Watching the game last year as an objective fan, I do recall some horrible officiating in that Dallas/Packers game last year in favor of Dallas. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that you are probably just another Dallas "fan" who hopped on the bandwagon.

netsteeler- I didn't even realize that I had picked all of the home teams save for one. I look at each game individually, and this week it has apparently led me to some pretty boring picks. Pittsburgh could very well beat Philly, and believe me, I'd love for them to win. But Pittsburgh doesn't have as much explosiveness in the passing game to match Dallas, and if the Eagles' offense can clean up the mistakes, they are scary good. That's how I rationalized that pick, and it could very well go the other way.

The Cards have a better shot at an upset than the Lions do, but they've beaten the Dolphins and the 49ers, and I'm not sold on them just yet. I took the Redskins here.

Generally speaking, I pick more upsets than I have this week. If anything, I'd consider the Philly pick to be my upset this week, and well, the Green Bay pick over Dallas certainly isn't popular with the masses. But most people wrote off Aaron Rodgers and this Green Bay team before the season started, while hyping up the Vikings. Green Bay is 2-0, and the Vikes are 0-2, so I'll continue to support the Pack.

You of course will be proven wrong this Sunday when the Arizona Cardinals beat the Washington Redskins at home in much the same fashion as they beat the SF 9ers in their opening away game at San Fran. Key factors exist that you do not take into consideration.

1. The Saints D last week was shy 3 starters in the secondary that allowed the Skins to mount a finish against a Saints team that resorted to a "prevent" defense hoping to stop the Redskins air attack.

2. Joe Gibbs is not there. The Skins started over
with Jim Zorn and are in their 1st year with him and the normally associated turmoil that goes along with all new coaching schemes. The Cards are 2 & 0 this year in this exact situation.

3. The Cards have been missing starting Defensive
lineman Gabe Watson so far this year. He will be playing Sunday. Washington will have even more difficulty mounting a running attack with Gabe back
Look for Alan Branch to be back in the game for the Cards as well.

The Skins do not have the necessary tools on defense to shut down the Az. Offensive attack...especially their air attack.
The Cardinal D will prove to be too much for the Redskin Offense to surmount.

Most of the picks were OK, but I have 2 which I think are just plain wrong. Minn over Carolina? You have to be kidding? They are starting Gus Ferrotte. The 2nd string quaterback who wasn't very good when he was young. Their secondary looks terrible, and the pass rush looked better last week vs the Colts, but how many O-line starters are Indy playing. I just don't think Minn can pull this one off. Dallas vs Green Bay. Rodgers has played 2 games against less than average opponents. The Green Bay defense has played games against 2 less than average offenses. Green Bay has looked less than impressive in either of their wins. Dallas has at least looked good offensively in both games. Dallas' D may be a little suspect, but if Rodgers has to put it in the air alot to keep up w/ Dallas' offense, look for some mistakes. However, this is why they play the games. To make us all look stupid for guessing.

I'm not liable on the Vikings pick, as I posted before the dismal decision to make Gus Frerotte (sp?) the starting QB. Panthers will take that one, as the Vikings are virtually throwing their season away at this point.

You give a young quarterback time to develop. Yes, Jackson isn't coming around as fast as people would like, but if you don't have an answer better than Gus, you keep Jackson under center. I watched painstakingly while Eli Manning redefined inconsistency for a few years, but he has finally pulled it together.

News for the Az/Skins game: Starting Defensive tackle Alan Branch is listed as : probable
Gabe Watson is listed as questionable. Watson practiced on Wednesday and the return of these 2 defensive players to Arizona's line will create difficulties for Portis and company that they had not planned on.

Are the Chiefs good enough to even put 10pts on the board ? They've got enough problems as it is with Herm Edwards still holding the reins there in Kansas.
How far does this team have to sink before they finally realize he's not the man for the job ?

Edwards much like Laine Kiffin in Oakland are now on borrowed time. And they're likely to be the first coaching casualties of this NFL season.

tophatal- The Chiefs posted 10 on the Pats, so I'd say they are capable of doing the same against Atlanta's D. Yes, Herm Edwards will go, but the Chiefs show more promise than Oakland outside of the QB and coaching situations.

Lane Kiffin will go in Oakland, but really, Raiders fans should be going after Al Davis. He's really run that team into the ground, and they have absolutely no chemistry.

So they put a 10 spot on the Pats that may well be the most ponints that they'll put up all season.
I do believe however that they'll struggle throughout the season. This team has lost its focus and at the same time I don't believe Edwards commands the players' respect.
