Potential Trade Bait July '08?
Jun 12, 2008 | 1:31PM | report this

Detroit Tigers: With the 3rd highest payroll in MLB and a completely disappointing season thus far, Detroit may figure to be a seller before the July 31st trade deadline.  Edgar Renteria, Carlos Guillen, and Gary Sheffield all will attract a great deal of interest from other clubs in the hunt for a playoff spot.  Look for at least one of those three to be gone, if not all of them - Sheffield has been a complete disaster spending time on the DL and hitting just .213 in 136 at-bats; Guillen has been a solid performer for the Tigers since signing with them five years ago (sub-.300 BA just once during that span), but his age (32) and salary ($12 million) make him an expensive IF/OF with marginal power, mediocre speed, and no definitive field position with the club; Renteria is also 32, earns $10 million, but has been producing at a lower rate than to what the Tigers have become accustomed (.267 BA in 2008, .291 lifetime).

New York Yankees: $212 million in payroll was not supposed to generate a .500 team, but that's exactly what Li'l Steinbrenner got in 2008.  The Bronx Bombers have battled injuries all season, but that's no excuse - the three players with salaries eclipsing $21.6 million in 2008 (Derek Jeter, Jason Giambi, Alex Rodriguez) are actually producing on the field, but Giambi and A-Rod could very well be gone via trade.  Then again, I could be wrong - the Yanks have a long history of overpaying for talent, and they have the finances to do it without suffering any fiscal losses.  However, I don't see this franchise having a $200+ million team salary in 2009.  Call it a hunch, but these guys are old, injury-prone, and just not worth half the money they are getting paid.

Cleveland Indians: The Tribe has a middle-of-the-pacck payroll ($76+ million), but with the emrgence of Cliff Lee (SP), C.C. Sabathia becomes expendable, especially considering his production (4-8, 4.34 ERA) has declined and his hefty $11 million price tag.  This will be a tough move for the Indians to make, as Jake Westbrook is out for the season after elbow surgery and must return to his 2006 form if Cleveland has hopes of making a run for the AL Central crown in 2009.

Seattle Mariners: With a $117+million payroll good for 8th-highest in the league, Seattle is a complete disappointment in every aspect of the game.  Anyone is potential trade bait on this roster, including the previously untouchable Ichiro Suzuki, who's age (34) and salary ($17+ million) make him a luxury this franchise may no longer be able to afford.  Look for the highest-paid players on this team - Ichiro, Richie Sexson, Jarrod Washburn, Adrian Beltre, Carlos Silva, Miguel Batista, and Jose Vidro (all of whom are 33 or older, excepting Beltre and Silva who are 29) - to be gone by the July trading deadline. Even Raul Ibanez, a fan favorite in Seattle, is a valuable MLB commodity Seattle may look to move.

NL: Coming later.

ABOUT ME

rmac1973
I'm just your average sports nut, I suppose. Of course I'm a bit of a homer - the Mariners, Seahawks, and Huskies are my teams - but I stick with my boys down the stretch, through thick and thin. What can the Mariners do to rebound from their worst season in twent years? Will Erik Bedard recover in time for the 2009 season? Ryan Rowland-Smith
and Brandon Morrow look to make the transition from the bullpen to the starting rotation, so can they combine with Felix to create a young and effective 1-2-3 tandem? How will the M's new front office guru fare - will Chuckie and Howie be able to stay "hands off" long enough for the new VP/GM to accomplish anything positive? Can the Seahawks recover from their early-season woes and rebound for a fifth straight NFC West title? How will the team handle the transition from Mike Holmgren's regime to the ways of Jim Mora Jr? Can the Hawks' defense stop anyone? Can the offense put up more than 200 yards? Any of you folks out there interested in healthy and creative debate about anything, feel free to speak up!
