Miguel Cotto 30-0 25 KOs vs. Shane Mosley 44-4 37 KOs
There's a fight tonight…A big fight tonight…Man how I love me some big time fight nights…especially when it reminds me of “throwback” fight nights.
Boxing is dead? Who the hell said? Not me…like McDonald’s …"I’m loving it".
Boxing is still king. King of the ring. Long live the king…just not that wild haired Don fellow thing.
Lace up the gloves and nothing else matters. No kicks to the head…No super-atomic slams…No tricky-dickey submission holds…No choke-outs…Let’s just shoot the hands…Only the hands… That’s what makes it so sweet… The sweet science… I like your style…Now try mine.
Styles make fights or so I’ve been told. Try this one on for style. Tonight we get to see “Sugar” Ray Leonard take on Roberto “Hands of Stone” Duran all over again. Except this time the year is 2007. It’s the same fight…only the names have been changed and they’re not innocent.
“Sugar” Shane Mosley battles Miguel “No Nickname That I Know Of” Cotto. If I had to pick one it would be a short list. A list of one as a matter of fact. In the ring Cotto is an assassin to the body. He’s the “Body Snatcher”. Taking your breath away is what he does. A punch in the side…a punch to the gut…a punch below the belt…you’d better watch out.
Ask Zab “Super” Judah all about that. Just back in June Zab wasn’t feeling so super. After zapping Cotto’s chin…Cotto’s suspect chin…a couple of times over again...Cotto decided to take the fight to Zab’s “little friend”…Far below the belt just wasn't nice...Once wasn't enough so he did it twice.
Zab’s voice rose two octaves and the tempo was set. A barrage to the body that he'd never before met. Zab “Super” Judah crashed like a jet.
Now here is Shane Mosley. The modern day “Sugar” fighting the modern day Duran. Duran was tough as nails too and dirty as a snake. Sugar is quick as lighting just like his namesake. Sugar packs a wallop to complement his speed. He’ll do whatever it takes based on the need. He can box you all night or he can turn out your lights. Make you look silly or display all his might. A knockout… a knockout…that’s what I’m talking about.
I already told you that Cotto’s chin is soft. The light hitting DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley made Miguel do the two-step in early 2005 after chopping his jaw. Some guy named Ricardo Torres had him down twice later that same year. The thing is that Cotto got back up. Wobbly as a weeble but he got back up. Showing great survival instincts he managed to recoup. Came out madder the next round and opened his can of whoop…there it is. Patented punches to the body…whoop there they is.
This isn’t Corley tonight. This isn’t Torres tonight. This is the best Cotto has ever faced tonight. This is one of the best of this generation tonight…This is maybe one of the best ever tonight…This is Cotto’s chance to tell the world…LOOK AT ME TONIGHT!!!
How’s it going to go? I’m not certain and I’m not even sure that I care. All I know is that Cotto better not get caught coming in early cause that could make it an early night. Did I tell you his chin is fragile as glass? Why yes I did…I know that I did... but the longer the fight goes on the more if favors the “Body Snatcher”.
Speed kills and Shane’s got plenty… but you know what kills speed, don’tcha? A few well placed hooks to the body that’s what. With Cotto in the ring there will be a bit more than the little… in fact it's quite a lot.
Styles make fight and this fight is styling. It could last one round or it could last twelve. All I know is that it’s going to be a war…a bloodbath per se…a long or a short one...I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Now pay your $50 you cheap bums you. Get some friends to chip in is what you should do. There’s other big names on the under card too. Boxing is dead? Nah... that just isn't true.
Prediction: Lots of Oohssss...Aahssss...Ohhssss...and Yo-ssss
again boxing is set up, how is it that the cotto is running in the fight. he showed the no heart at the end. but hbo didnt say that. Cotto is hbo big ticket for the next 5 years, but he lost 2 night.
zulu9---I have to admit. I didn't like the fact that Cotto chose to play it safe in the last round either. I thought he should have kept doing what he had been doing all night which was fight a great fight.
With that being said if I were a judge I would have "probably" given that last round to Mosley. Even so at best that would have only made it a draw and a very questionable one at that. Otherwise I'd say Cotto won the fight cleanly, but a close one, 7 rounds to 5.
I thought it was a great fight and I disagree with you that Cotto lost. Maybe it could have gone either way or been a draw but I have zero problem with the decision. It was that good and close of a fight. Give credit where crdit is due.
rivjo, what fight were you looking at. cotto was was all most k.oed in the 8th round, then he started running from the 9th on.This fight was closer then the HBO paid judges said. Is this a champ? ask de la hoya about running. rivjo tell cotto not to take the mosley rematch, he will get knocked out next time....

Mosley put on a great show but he didn't dictate the fight as he ought to have done.
Hence the reason why he lost the fight on a unanimous verdict.
See my post titled Have Hands Will Travel !
There I outline some of what I thought to be more of the salient points of the fight.
As for Cotto he's now got it made in the shade. He can pick and choose his next opponent knowing that he'll get the big pay day he's seeking.
zulu---We're just going to have to disagree on the fight. I thought it was a good fight but a fight that Cotto won. Once again I thought it could have been a draw at best. For what it's worth, at the end of the fight you could tell that Mosely thought he lost too.
tophat---I agree. I was VERY surprised that Cotto was able to outbox Mosely, rather than outslug him, for much of the first part of the fight. Miguel showed great speed and a great jab to go along with it. He showed himself to be a more versatile fighter than many considered him to be and he also took a good punch as well. Both were surprising to me.
I do believe Oscar will try him next. If he loses then it should very well be his last fight. That matchup of styles would be interesting as well. I think Oscar is more suited for brawling than Mosely was the other night but perhaps he will be biting off more than he can chew in his more advanced age.
Looking forward to the Mayweather-Hatton circus that is about to ensue in the upcoming weeks.

I can see that happening but I'd preface this by saying that Oscar should have a warmup fight or he'll end up being exposed by Cotto. He's nowehere near as quick as he use to be. And in fighting someone like Cotto. He'll need all the speed that he can conjure up or he'll get beaten badly.
As for Cotto I can definately see him facing off against the winner of the Mayweather Hatton fight. And that initself should be one helluva' fight !

The Vargas Mayorga fight also ought to be a real barnburner as there's no love lost between the two. The animosity between the two ain't no hype as it's totally real !
They hate each other with such disdain that it's totally believable. Set your clock for the inevitable bloodbath that'll take place !
Hey Riv,
Keepin' the dream alive I see. Anyways, I'm alright just busy. I can't say I'm all too excited for the Jones/Trinidad fight but I'll watch it anyway. I think if this fight would've happened 10 years ago, I'd have been thrilled but anymore... well, you know. Alright, I'll talk to you later.

Two over the hill fighters like Trinidad and Jones oughtn't to be fighting at this juncture. What have either got to offer the sport at present ? Neither one could beat the likes of Hopkins or Cazalghe.
They're shot and it's now more about the money and nothing else.
I'm a special ed teacher by trade. Funny, I spend my day wanting to say shut-up to people and then do the same here. Just can't seem to. That would be rude and most uncivilized.
I like to write and never met a thought I couldn't continue. My blogs, like this bio, tend to be far too long. I can admit it. If you make it to the end of one of my "essays" there's usually a message that could have been written in half the time by a better writer than me.
Did I mention I was a finalist in NGS II? No really I was, further proving that theyll let anyone in this place. I came in 10th, which is better than 16th I guess. Other than winning the 4th grade graduation writing award it was the biggest literary accomplishmen t of my life. I still haven't gotten used to being famous.
