Sun Devils Grab Dennis Erickson. Hmm.
Dec 10, 2006 | 11:04AM | report this

The Arizona State Sun Devils have a new head football coach. Dennis Erickson, currently the head coach at Idaho, has been offered the job and has accepted, according to published reports in this morning’s East Valley Tribune. (www.eastvalleytribune.com) He was one of the names that had been mentioned frequently the past week or so, along with Mike Price and Mike Riley, among others. Personallly, I was hoping for Dave McGinnis or Steve Mariucci, but I think I can live with Erickson. Here are the pros and cons of Erickson’s hire, as I see them.

The Good.

-When ASU athletic director Lisa Love embarked on her search, she stated she was looking for a big name who has had success. At least at the college level, Erickson certainly has had that. He was 64-8 at Miami and won two national titles. He coached at Washington State two years before heading to Miami, going 9-3 the second year there and got the Cougars their first bowl win in 73 years. At Oregon State, he had a 31-17 record and took the Beavers to three bowl games, going 11-1 his last year there and trouncing Notre Dame 41-9 in the Fiesta Bowl.

-Erickson’s offensive coordinator at Idaho, Dan Cozetto, figures to come with Erickson to Tempe. Cozetto was the O.C. for Arizona State from ‘92-‘99 under Bruce Snyder, and is highly thought of in these parts. He should bring a more balanced offense than the pass-happy Dirk Koetter had, though the Sun Devils ran the ball better this year than at any time under Koetter, perhaps out of necessity more than anything else. (Koetter will coach the team in the upcoming Hawaii Bowl, by the way).

-Erickson obviously is familiar with the Pac-10 as well as the national stage. And his name will no doubt assist him in the recruiting wars.

-One would have to think that Erickson is not looking to move after this job. At the age of 59, this appears to be a final stop, rather than a stepping stone for him, though no one knows for sure what the future holds.

The Bad

-On the other side of the coin, I was hoping for someone who would be a long term solution. In other words, someone younger than Erickson’s 59 years. For the same reason, I was also cool to the idea of Riley, Price, and Norm Chow, another name that was bandied about a lot in the time since Koetter was let go. Although I understand that finding a young coach who will step up and succeed at the next level is a bit of a crapshoot. But what the hey, I like to gamble. But I don’t have thousand of fans, alum, and administrators watching me when I do.

-A few days after the Koetter announcement, Lisa Love was at an ASU men’s basketball game. As she walked in front of the student section, the crowd started chanting “Dave Mc-Gin-nis.” McGinnis, currently an assistant with the Tennessee Titans, would have been a perfect fit here, in my opinion. Granted, he didn’t have much success as the NFL Cardinals head coach, (who does?), but his personality is perfect for the college game. He’s a bit of a rah-rah guy, and the fans here still like him. Plus, Norm Chow, now the O.C. with the Titans, may have accompanied McGinnis to Tempe. I mentioned I didn’t like the idea of Chow as the head coach, but I’d take him in a heartbeat as offensive coordinator. Steve Mariucci also has Pac-10 ties, and his name is recognizable as well. I would love to see what he could do here. He has had success both in college and the NFL, his stint with the Lions notwithstanding. Like McGinnis with the Cardinals, I won’t hold Mariucci’s failure with the Lions against him.

-Erickson does bring some baggage. He was arrested for DUI in 1995. Granted, that was 11 years ago, but it’s always brought along with his name, so it will be a big deal for some. And even though he had success at Miami, the connotations of the Hurricanes program are often not good. His teams have not exactly been the most disciplined, and we’ve seen ASU take their share of penalties under Koetter, so I don’t expect that to change much.

The Outlook

The Arizona State football program has been labeled a “sleeping giant” by some. Lee Corso was on local radio recently and called it one of the ten best college coaching jobs in America. I don’t know if I would go that far, but the possibility of a big name coach like Erickson awakening the program cannot be ignored. There are a lot of pluses that the school has to offer. The weather, a 73,000 seat stadium smack dab in the middle of campus (which has hosted numerous national championship games and a Super Bowl), and a recently upgraded weight room and practice facilities that are considered among the best in the country.

ASU also has the second largest enrollment in the nation, only a few hundred behind Ohio State according to numbers from the fall of this year. That can give off a big time feel, but obviously in itself doesn’t necessarily translate into a significant recruiting tool.

With a roster adequately stocked with young talent, Erickson should be able to win almost right away. Of course the flip side of that is that he will be expected to win right away. And rightly so, as long as he can fit the personnel to his system, which is always easier said than done. I personally will give him a one-year honeymoon period. No more. And that might be generous, considering the fact that the 2007 schedule is favorable, listing eight home games for the Sun Devils. All in all, Love seemingly made a very good hire in head basketball coach Herb Sendek from North Carolina State, so it appears she knows what she’s doing. Of course, she also was the one who gave Koetter a contract extension after last season, but she realized her mistake, bit the bullet, and moved on. She wanted to go big game hunting and bag a prize capable of competing with the likes of conference foe USC, and Erickson may have been the best name available for that purpose. (For those who don't know, Love was an associate athletic director at USC before landing the ASU gig, so she's no stranger to big-time collegiate athletics). I look at Erickson like a fan would when trade rumors surface. At first, sometimes they don’t sound like a good idea, but once it’s done, you start to think that maybe it’s not such a bad deal. From what I’ve read and heard, Erickson is hungry to regain his status as a big time coach. If so, his coming to Tempe may be just what the doctor ordered for this “sleeping giant.”

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Ricko...a one year honeymoon might be all you get. Don't kid yourself...Erickson has NO loyalty to anyone but himself. If he sees a better spot to be...he'll be gone in a flash. I saw this coming when they signed him in February.

Here's a link to a column by our local guy, although I'm not sure you can access it, but give it a try. If you can't, let me know and I'll email it to you. This writer, by the way, is really GOOD...

Yeah Sax, I'm kind of on the fence about the hiring. Frankly, if he gets us to a top tier program and then bolts, I don't have a problem with it. It will be that much easier to hire the next guy. Don't know if that's the right approach or not, but ASU has been a mediocre team for too long now. Thanks for checking in. I'll check out the article when I get a chance.

Corso currently has 42 teams among his top 10 programs, with the list expanding.

My perception of Erickson has always been good coach, questionablle character. Probably an oversimplification, no one can deal with Miami's image. He will win at ASU, which seems to be the bottom line these days.

Yeah, like I said hog, Love said she was going after a proven big name, so she accomplished that. The reaction around here is kind of 50-50, wait and see. I guess I feel the same way. I am pretty confident he will be an upgrade over what we've had recently, though. Thanks for stopping by.

And I found out I was mistaken-Corso said this was one of the top FIVE jobs in America, not ten. Which is all the more reason to take him with a grain of salt.

Ricko,

I agree with Hogfan. I've always seen Erickson as the kind of guy who will win at the college level but there always seems to be a character question about him.

ASU is definately a program with excellent potential. Perhaps, the best case scenario for the Sun Devils is for Erickson to get the program back on track in the short-term (one or two years)and leave before he has a chance to leave the program in chaos.

At that point, a guy like McGinnis or Mariucci could step in and keep things moving in the right direction without the baggage that Erickson brings.

I think the move to get rid of Koetter was the right one. I only hope Oregon has the same realization and decides to bring a new coach on board to get them to the next level.

Good post. Keep up the good work.

Nothing against ASU, I definitely think they can be big time, but there are more than five jobs in the SEC alone that I'd rate above ASU.

I'm neutral on the decision- could go either way. At least Erickson has that some history behind him- a proven track record is hard to come by sometimes. He ain't Jim Tressel, but then again, who is? (sorry- just had to throw that in there) But on the bright side, he ain't Matt Millen. (sorry again- had to throw that in there, too) If nothing else, he's a solid, reliable pick as a coach. The talent he recruits will be the deciding factor.

Maybe he can use the ASU position to leverage a head coach job for the Arizona Cardinals. Or is Denny Green pretty much entrenched with them?

Can't even finish that statement with a straight face...

Shooter-yeah, what the hell does Denny think he's doing going on a win streak here? Is he trying to keep his job, for crying out loud? Geez! Enough already! Pretty soon the Cards won't even be picking in the top ten!! They had a top five pick, and THEY LET IT OFF THE HOOK!!!

Nooch-I like your way of thinking. It's not that far fetched to think that Erickson could win quickly here. If he does and then leaves, it will be that much more attractive for the next coach. And let's face it, no one's won much here since Bruce Snyder. I'm really kind of up in the air on Erickson. One thing he's proven though-he wins. Thanks for stopping by. Always a pleasure.

hogfan-I don't know if Corso was talking about potential or reality. Either way, there is a lot of possibility here, but to be on par with a few of the SEC, or Big Ten schools for that matter, is a long way off.

TSI-How did you guys pick a I-AA guy like Tressel who worked out so well? Anyway, Erickson is an improvement over Koetter. How much of one remains to be seen. I don't think he'll have any trouble recruiting. Unless of course the kids ask him if he'll be around all four years . . .

Ricko, good work. With Erickson many point to his players' past lack of discipline as a reason not to hire him. I think that people often pile too much blame on the coach when players get into trouble. The coach can preach all he wants to about responsibility and making smart decisions, but the truth is that when a player goes out, gets hammered, and does something really dumb, that's not the coach's fault. I'm a teacher. If I was held accountable every time one of my students got into a fight or shoplifted some candy, I would be fired. You can try to instill some values in kids, but you can only do so much. Back to football...Erickson has found success everywhere he's gone (except Idaho), so I see no reason why he can't turn the Sun Devils into contenders just like he did at Miami and Orgeon State.

bengals-I did dig that, thanks. DLR's outfit was way overboard, and it was lip-synched (and probably play-synched?). But silly, me, I still liked it. If I could get my hands on footage of their first two or three albums worth of recording sessions and their first couple tours, I'd be a happy man. Nice avatar, by the way. Did I tell you that already?

Bubba-I don't have much doubt that he'll win here, and quite frankly, that's the main thing right now. I'm sick of playing USC tough and getting blown out by two or three other conference foes. If you have time, check out a post I wrote on Koetter on October 1. That pretty much spells out the reasoning behind the change, and why I think Erickson will be at least somewhat of an improvement. And I agree-the coach is in charge, but there's only so much blame he can take for the players antics. I'm not trying to absolve Erickson from all blame. Thanks for stopping by, Bubba.

Another pro coach in the Pac-10.

The dye was cast on Koetter when he waffled on Keller. It will look even worse when the kid rocks for Nebraska next year & gets drafted.

Amazing that Corso called it a Top 10 job. Funny. It's close though, maybe 25? Weather is great, not a very tough conference, I can see that.

Their play has been too erratic. One week they can be giant killers and the next a train wreck. He should be able to instill some consistency.

Thanks for stopping by, Norcal. Always a pleasure. I can kind of understand what Corso was talking about. And I repeat-kind of. If you step back and look at the whole picture of D-1 football, there isn't a whole lot that ASU doesn't have going for it. BTW, the co-eds here are out of this world.

What were we talking about again? Oh, yeah. Football. I noticed you and I are the same age, so maybe you remember when the Sun Devils ruled this neck of the woods, along with the Suns. Obviously now, with teams in all four major sports, and sporting events too numerous to mention, ASU has not necessarily fallen off the map, but definitely slid and lost their grip, shall we say. I've been to Sun Devil Stadium when it was packed to the hilt for a big game. And since I've experienced that, I always long for it again. And naturally always think it's possible again.

Don't #### on the Pac-10 too much. There are lots of former pro coaches in college. Conference strength swings like a pendulum, kind of like AFC/NFC dominance in the pros.

Oh what am I saying. At least Erickson is an improvement over Koetter.

Koetter did show a lot of class in his dismissal, which I'll give him credit for. He'll turn up again real soon, probably as as offensive coordinator at first.

hey rick/ I'm so far out of the loop on college football other than UCLA I don't have a clue about Erickson's chances but I did want to say thank your being such a regular supporter of my blog and always giving up your thoughts. But ya know. I just don't see it on the Sun Devils. I'm just not feeling it. I don't know why Erickson doesn't turn me on that much since he's obviously done well with Idaho but this is not a small school making a splash in a medium schedule. He's back with the big boys now. Can he recruit against well enough there to take on SC and the other big guns?

Frigging Suns (do en doo doo) are just rolling like a skateboarder on a 90 degree slope. I hate the Suns (do en doo doo). Just Kidding. These long win streaks take on a life or their own and they got one more to go I think for something like the longest streak in the NBA in 7 years and it's already their longest in Sun history? Sure I'm a Laker fan and sure it's gonna bury us for the division but sometimes ya just gotta get excited and hope you get to see something you only get to see a couple of times in your NBA life. GO SUNS (do en doo doo, doo en doo doo...it's all right)
