Michelle Wie followed up her opening round 78 with a 79 in round 2 of the European Masters in Switzerland. At least she's consistent. What exactly constitutes her being a 'Master,' anyway?
"I'm still in shock," Wie said. "I didn't know what sport I was playing out there. I woke up on the wrong side of the bed again. I really just couldn't get anything going."
"Now that I played a tournament this week, I feel I know what sport I'm playing," she said. "I'm really motivated for next week." (She is playing next week at the 84 Lumber Classic in Pennsylvania.)
"If I just play women's events, I only get better at women's events. I feel I have a good balance now."
Hmm. Apparently a grand total of zero victories on the women's tour and missing the cut for the ninth time in ten men's events denotes "good balance." Meaning she hasn't won anywhere? Oh, well, at least she now knows what sport she is playing. Or does she?
I can't believe how poorly that young lady is being mismanaged. I know, she's making lots of cash, but she has a long career to consider, and needs to work on improving her game, not trying to make cuts in men's tournaments when she's clearly not ready....sorry Ricko, I guess my cynical side reared its' ugly head too....
No, you're right, Half. It sounded like I was criticizing her, and I guess I was. But for cryin' out loud, she's 16 freakin' years old!! Somebody with some common sense needs to pull her aside and get her on the right track.
ricko She's now becoming the laughing stock of the women's tour. And with her proclamations about wanting to play on the men's tour as well as the Ryder Cup. She's got to be kidding ! She'd do herself well by learning to play the game well and learn al its facets as well as the rules in order to not get caught cheating again. The officials have already let her slide once but it won't and shouldn't happen again.
chux-Exactly! That must be it! Thanks for the chuckle
hogfan & rampant-well said. It's almost getting to the point where she can't be taken seriously-a sad state for a prodigy like her. If things don't change soon, it's going to get a whole lot worse for her before it gets better.
I was driving on my way over here, and it was taking friggin' forever! Then after a couple of hours, I realized that I wasn't driving a car...but rather sitting in my recliner, using an empty punch bowl as the steering wheel...and shifting gears with a 9-iron. But I made it...
Poor Wie. Honestly, I think the reason she plays on the Men's tour is because the women of the LPGA keep hitting on her. She'd rather be winning tournaments, but doesn't want to put up with it. I think they should let her play on the Senior Men's Tour. Then she might win a tourney or two. And probably cause a heart attack or two.
ricko The best thing that could happen to Wie at the moment is for her to discovewr boys and go out have some fun. Perhaps then she'd know the difference between a 4 iron and an 8 wood, if you get my drift ?
Shooter, I've made the same mistake with my recliner and I have to say, with gas at $3 a gallon, I've saved a bundle. Missed a few appointments, but hey, you can't have everything....I'm sure you're right about the women's tour and all the players hitting on her. The men know they'll go to jail so they don't dare.
I hear she actually thought about changing to tennis, but realized the women's tennis tour would be no better, so she's pretty well stuck, since she doesn't know how to do rhythmic gymnastics....
I never looked at it like that, Half. My recliner for some reason only gets 30 miles to the gallon. Go figure!
I think everyone is like me, just waiting for Wie to become of age to let the real humor fly. By then, we may not even want to joke anymore. It's sad, and tragic.
This just in: On the heels of her ten under par 62 to come from five shots down to win last Sunday, Annika opens today with a course record 64. Of course, having said that, she's no Michelle Wie, but then who is?
(Dammit, ricko. Did you really have to be so cynical??)
There are a lot of hidden 84 lumber jokes here, but they’ll have to wait until she’s 18.
Must be tough to try and play golf with a bunch of lesbians hitting on you, wait a minute….is that heaven?
The names on the women’s tour kill me, 84 lumber, Jamie Farr(Klinger) Double Intruder Invitational, the list goes on.
She needs to play with females in her own age group, she has turned into a side show. Tiger could have turned pro sooner, but he was getting good advice from his father and others.(not to mention Stanford Hotties)
She needs to go back to High School and play on the varsity squad if she wants to beat the boys (not really any pun intended, really none)
the looks on her face after a couple of missed puts they showed on sportscenter made me think tha she'll probably quit playing by the time she's 20, or she'll go insane from frustration and the pressure, and the psychiatric laws will force her to quit, at least temporarily, while she's institutionalized.
i feel bad for her, in a way, because there's a lot of pressure on her to suceed. but on the other hand, if she's old enough to be given the opportunity to compete with adults, she should be smart enough to think like one too, and realize she's not ready yet, probably not even for the women's tour, but ESPECIALLY for the men's tour.
finish high school, go to college, and prepare herself mentally for the pressure of playing with the big boys...and girls.
by the time she should be old enough to compete with the pros, she'll be burnt out by the frustration she is clearly showing at such a young age.
I agree cuz. She could have a fabulous career if it's done right. At the rate she is going, she's only going to get demoralized and fall way short of expectations.
she reminds me in a way of some of those guys who entered the nba draft fresh out of high school, and were complete busts, or didnt get drafted at all. i'd mention names, but since they all disappeared without a trace, i cant think of any.
ricko - I know this has gone from we've touched on this before, but this has gone from intriguing to quirky to gimmicky to down right ridiculous! If the PGA pros had a union like the NFL, NBA, or MLB, someone would have stepped in by now and said enough – this is taking spots away from legitimate male players on their tour. I am far from a chauvinist or a sexist but come on. Somebody that may have kept their tour card by getting into one more event is going back to Q-school because of this dog and pony show.
And I have nothing against her. I would love to see her succeed…ON HER OWN TOUR!!!
I agree burger. When her novelty wears off and still hasn't won anything, then what? Of course, she'll be fine because of huge checks from Nike, etc. But she could be a forgotten name in a few years, like countless other 'can't miss' kids who never did much of anything. (see cuz's comment above).
This will only stop being absurd when Ms Wie becomes totally dominate on the LPGA tour, then if she plays on the PGA tour it will only be ridiculous. There are those who claim a need for equality as justification for allowing her to play
and sexism as the reason for not allowing her to play. The real sexism is revealed in these same voices barring men from competing in the LPGA. The only real equality requires the removal of every restriction including membership in either organization and playing qualifications. After all why should anyone be required to hit the ball in order to make millions on tour?
Spent half my life in North Dakota. The other half, so far, in the Valley of the Sun. As a kid, I was always playing, watching, reading, or writing about sports. I lost most of the "playing" along the way, but the rest remains the same. I pledge to refrain from commenting on a blog unless I've read it in its entirety. If I have time, of course.
Carry on.
